LD29 April 25–28, 2014

I am SO in!

Hello all! Though this is my first technical Ludum Dare, I have been watching the blog for some time, and I have done a couple of the MiniLD’s (Never submitted any). I am so psyched to be entering for real this time! So, let’s get to it! (All links open in new tab)

My tools will be:
Platform: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Libraries: LWJGL and Slick (slick_utils)
Sound: SFXR and Audacity
Art: Paint.NET
Tilesetting: GoTile (Thanks Pitzik4!)

As I’ve said, can’t wait for this to start! Meh, I think there should be another sentence here, but I don’t know what to put. I guess these filler sentences will do!

LD#29 – THIRDED!

After a kind of successful beginning, and an almost-failed attempt, I’m in for Ludum Dare 48 again – now, at the third time!

Everything is the same.

Language: Lua
Libraries: LÖVE
Coding: Notepad++ with LÖVE compiler
Graphics: Paint.NET
Sound effect source: SFXR (the SFX generator that was specially designed for LD)

About miscellaneous, things are a little bit different again.

Streaming/recording: I should make a Youtube livestream; only for non-Hungarian guys this time. I’m still thinking about it though, since I don’t wanna talk in English only, though 48 hours.
Energy source: after the experiences of 2 LD events, I guess I should F&CKIN’ SLEEP INSTEAD OF ADDICTING ON CAFFEIN

It’s happening.

Despite being up against people who are probably ~10-20 years older than me (I am 11) I thought I would take part in Ludum Dare 29 for the sake of it. I don’t know how this is going to turn out, but all I know is that:

  • Sprites will be made in a MSpaint like program
  • Music will be made in SunVox
  • Sounds made with sfxr (cfxr since I am using OSX)
  • Will be written in Python using the PyGame library

I am super excited! All I know is that I am going to need quite a bit of caffeinated drinks and pizza to keep me going.

You ready for Jam? Pixel^3 is ready for Jam.

And so is the artist. (me) Since the last LD I’ve been training in the mountains with the 7 pixel art masters in the mysterious ways of Pixel-fu and I can gladly say that there has been amazing improvement.

Okay I’ve been lurking Pixelation and have made marginal improvement. Pixeling is hard guys. Either way we’re back as a team and ready to dev a game worth it’s salt and pepper.

I’m in.

I’m in. Just before the compo (on the wednesday before) I have probably the most important exam in school I’ve had up to this point. Thankfully it’s just before, not after, I would be f#cked in that case.

So, to the compo stuff:

I’m going to do 2D and pixel art this time too, I *might* do 3D and pixel art but not sure.

Programs/stuff I use:
Language – Java
Library – Pixel array on a Java Canvas or LibGDX. Probably the former.
Code – Eclipse
Graphics – Paint.NET
SFX – bfxr.net
Music – Beepbox.co/iNudge.net/Qtractor, one of those, depending on how I’m feeling. If clicky, the first 2, if feeling like playing actual music, Qtractor.

I’m in, and you can watch the failure!

So Ludum Dare 29 is a thing, and I’m going to stream the entire thing live on twitch.tv/gigitrix!

I’m going to be streaming the ENTIRE Ludum Dare (sans ~8 hours sleep!) at twitch.tv/gigitrix!

Technologies/Tools planned:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • JS/HTML5 Canvas Game Frontend
  • Paint.NET Art
  • Audacity/Bfxr/generated sound (if sound is added)
  • Ubuntu VM with Sublime Text

For info of when this happens etc. please follow or monitor @tobypinder on twitter, which I’ll be updating with details as it happens!

I’m in!

Theme song of the whole weekend:

My Tools:

We’re in, and keen to code!

We’re back for the 6th time now, and hoping for success! Every entry has been better than the previous ones, so this month should go off with a bang! Hopefully we can come up with something fun and funny.

As usual, we’ll be coding in Java, using Eclipse (possibly using our own 2D Physics library if we get around to finishing it).
For graphics, either Paint.NET or Photoshop, depending on the style we choose.
Music will be made in Ableton Live.
Food will be excessively consumed.

We shall keep you updated. Happy coding everyone!

I’m in for the second time!

I’ve been learning how to code games in HTML5 for the last month, and for the first time, I think I’m ready to make a good game for this upcoming Ludumdare.

  • Code : JS and Html5
  • Framework : Phaser.io
  • Music and Sounds: Sfxr and Audacity
  • Graphics: Photohsop

I also decided to post my progress on my new game dev blog http://gikdew.com, feel free to go there, comment and check out my last game Circula.

Ludum Dare Round 2: I’m in!

Hey everyone!
Can’t wait for my second Ludum Dare to be under way!
I was pretty happy with my first one, funnily enough it was probably the most complete game I’ve ever made. :P
But I definitely want this one to be better, more polished atleast. :D
I’ll be using Unity and C#.
My “art” for the lack of a better term will probably be done in Paint.net or Gimp. :)
Anyway, best of luck to everyone!

I’m in for LD#29!

I’m getting so excited!  Can’t wait to see what the potential themes are going to be.

I’ll be using the nearly the same technology I used last time, with a few choice changes:

  • Html 5 Canvas / Javascript using the awesome Phaser framework
  • Going to attempt to use the Pickle free trial for art.  If I like it, I’ll buy a license.  If I don’t like it, I’ll fall back to the trusted Gimp.
  • Might try Pitzik4’s GoTile for tileset generation
  • The incredibly Free Abundant-Music for random music generation
  • The equally incredibly free BFXR for random game sound generation
  • Sublime Text 2 for code editing.  Perfect lightweight code editor.
  • GitHub for source control management
  • My own website to host the finished product
  • Chronolapse for time lapse capture.  Last LD I tried to stream my work, but I quickly discovered my internet connection just isn’t strong enough to stream at any decent quality.  So, instead, I’m going to capture my process via time lapse.

First-timer in for LD 29 Compo

Hi everyone!

I’ve been following Ludum Dare for a while now and have been wanting to get in on one. Finally the timing is right for me to join, so I’ll be entering in the LD29 Compo.

I’ve been using GameMaker as a hobbyist for over 10 years now and recently have decided to push myself to get more serious about game development. I’ll be developing in GameMaker: Studio, making sounds with SFXR, music in Reason 4, and graphics with a combination of photoshop, and GameMaker’s sprite editor.

I await the theme announcement excitedly! Good luck everyone!

My body is ready!

Im going to do this for the third  time now!

Used tools will be:

IDE: Eclipse

Language: Java

Libraries: Slick2D and LWJGL

Drawing: Paint.net

Sounds: sfxr and Audacity

I will stream all my work on twitch.tv/jecba aswell!

Now we just need to wait for the whole thing to begin!

Well, I guess I’m in.

I guess I’m in guys! I hope for a good theme, because I am planning to make a non-regular-ish type of game. I’m also very excited because this will be my first entry ever 😛 I will probably make it in C#.. So, see you guys in 15 days or so! Have a great time.

Rule Clarification – Base Code

Each LD I’ve been starting with an entirely blank page, using only one library (jQuery). Part of that has been because all my games have been very different so far, but I’m thinking that if I want to do a game similar to an older one then I probably don’t want to start from scratch.

construction

From the rules:

Base code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry.

Are there any restrictions on base code / personal code libraries? Does this mean it’s legit to use most of the code of an old game, recreate the art assets, and create a sequel?

Leave a comment — How do you handle this; what base code do you start with?

My interpretation is based on an older writing of the rules that made this a bit more obvious. Reading rule 2, though, makes me think this is still the intent. Starter code cannot have any specific game-related logic. If it’s boilerplate, like the code to get a screen up, that’s not game specific. If it’s a utility function, like find me a path between two points, that’s not game specific. If it’s “find the player, path to him, once a ray test shows a clean shot, shoot him with this bullet”, that’s game specific logic and is not valid. Unfortunately things like Unity and Gamemaker blur the line between what’s game specific and what’s not (Unity’s character controllers seem sketchy to me).

Well, there are a ton of people who use AS3 and start with the very expansive Flixel. So my rule has always been “Anything the people who use Flixel can start with, I can start with.”

That’s an easy one. Basically it comes down to availability:

Madpew’s interpretation is definitely more liberal, and would allow for a sequel or re-skinning of a previous game (so long as the code was made public & openly licensed).

Second Time at the Rodeo

Last year was such great fun that I am definitely looking forward to this again.  A couple of events tried to encroach on this important weekend, but I have finally cordoned off the time needed for the compo.

My LD26 entry, Dehoarder, did well enough to garner a little press attention and a couple of Let’s Play videos.  This year, I’ll be aiming even higher.  I nearly cracked the top 100 in a couple of categories in LD26 (Humor and Innovation), so this time my goal is to make the top 25 in at least one category.

My toolset remains largely the same as last year:

Engine: Unity 3D

Graphics: Paint.Net, GIMP, NeoTexEdit

Sound: sfxr,bfxr,Audacity

Music: ? (last time I used cgMusic and SolMiRe to generate music. Might do the same this year, might do something different.)

Can’t wait until the 25th!  Looking forward to hacking out a great game and rating all of the other excellent entries!

For once, I can finish one!

It seems like the past 3 ludum dares I could not participate because something was keeping me from it. But finally I will be able to participate(unless the world comes to an end). I got the time off work and I have the money set aside to spend to much money on food.

I also have somebody who will be joining me in this LD, that to my surprise is really good at pixel art

Anyways I will be using these tools:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Library: LWJGL

Tile Editor: Tiled

Pixel Art: pdn

Good Luck, Herpdermit

Flappy birds???

The only thing I hope about ludumdare #29, is that anyone upload a remake of Flappy bird (unless is fucking awesome and fun), so please don’t make flappy birds!

Im In

I’m really looking forward to this Ludum Dare. I want to get into to 100.

Programming from scratch using java.

IDE: eclipse

Sound: SFXR

Graphics: Paint.NET

Music: there will probably be none but if i have time then i will use FamiTracker

Good luck to everyone else 😀 😀

If you want to get into top 100 overall (which I assume you mean), it’s going to take some skill. You’re not going to go from #1007 to #100 after three months is what I’m saying. (And that applies to me, too– I’ve never been close to the top 100 after 5 events.)

Good luck and go for it!

LD29: let the party start

Hello there!

At last I’ve managed to find the time to join a LD, yay! Been tracking jams for some years, playing and really enjoying their games and been missing participation one after another. But that’s over 😀

I’ve been at other local Game Jams but this feels like the next thing I’d do. My art won’t be nice, my music won’t be great, but there’s one thing I can do: programming. So, depending on the theme and the game, I’ll be using these tools:

  • Engine: Unity, Phaser. It really depends on what I come up with, but even if it’s 2D I may give Unity a go, I’m aiming for releasing it for Android at least (why not OUYA too?).
  • IDE: if using Unity I’d be programming in C# and Visual Studio 2012 will be the IDE. If using Phaser I’d use Sublime Text 2. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be using Sublime for non-code things (level files or similar).
  • Graphics: Photoshop, Illustrator or, if any close to pixel art, Aseprite.
  • Sound: Audacity, Bfxr.
  • Music: Abundant Music.
  • Source control: probably GitHub, maybe a local repo.

I’m really looking forward to it, pretty sure it’ll be fun :)
Enjoy it!
