I recently submitted my very first Ludum Dare entry. I would really appreciated anyone to play it and tell me what you thought.

Thanks, Lucienpro

The Primeval Codex: Skyray

It’s cold, where’s my hat?

Try out my latest Mini-LD creation: Skyray. It’s a Skyrim demake featuring a large map, lots of snow, and terribly difficult combat.

This is the extent of town?

Post-compo version: http://deathraygames.com/play-online/skyray/ (not much has been added yet)

If you like the game, please send me a tweet @deathraygames about what you would like added next. I have a plan for further development but will only bother with it if people are interested. I can even add you in as an NPC! :)

If you like Skyrim there are three others from the last dare: Old Books, Demake Scrolls, Skywhim.

If you hit Esc it goes to the menu and zooms in if you keep hitting it it keeps zooming in and does not zoom back out all the way. 😛

Finding a Team

You can work alone, but should you? Don’t stretch yourself too thin or you could burn out fast. So how do you find a team? Some people use Reddit, others use forums, and if you are lucky enough you work with or go to class with others you can add to your team.

How do you find a team? Let everyone know, a new Ludum Dare is just around the corner, don’t go alone.

My team came together from members of online communities we frequent, and we organize remotely via Trello and Skype. Works really well!

Dankest Dungeon – a Gameboy Roguelike Demake

Greetings from the Victory Garden team. For our Mini LD 50 submission, we demade Red Hook Game’s upcoming squad management roguelike Darkest Dungeon, in the style of a Gameboy classic! The game’s not been released yet, so we had to take liberties here and there, but we did our best to stay true to the spirit of the game. Feel free to share your feedback and High Scores over on the project page!

There are a lot more features we wanted to get to, including more monsters, Camp and passive Party Leader skills, a surface and dungeon shops, and a classic Text String save feature. If people like this well enough, we’ll put together a Post-Compo Version with these features and more. But after a few day’s rest… it’s been intense!

...or the stone tile floor, as the case may be.

…or the stone tile floor, as the case may be.

All assets, design, and the game engine itself were produced for the Mini LD 50 Jam. Other than a pre-existing Java code base, and a handful of graphical assets, all content and features were created within 72 hours (with a small break taken between sessions, because it was a practice run). The game was coded using LWJGL, and managed via Trello. Audio was produced using BFXR, Reaper, and featured the Elder Thing VST plugin. Story stylistic development was inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s Huis Clos and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Character names came from Behind The Name.com, and additional names and literary references run the gamut from European and Greek Mythology, classic Combat RPGs, and H.P. Lovecraft, to works of gothic literature

If you like our stuff, feel free to check out our new devblog, Victory Garden Games, where we’ll be talking about LD plans, as well as some of our upcoming projects! Thanks a ton, and I hope you have a great time playing our game.

‘Arena CTF’ – 2D Quake-3-style Capture the Flag

Having never entered LD before, it just so happened that MiniLD 50 coincided with my desire to build a top-down 2D dual-stick Quake-3-Arena-style capture the flag game out of a prototype I’d been working on for a couple days but had no purpose for; a perfect candidate for ‘demakes’!

Sprites drawn on iPad (in Sprite Something), game built in Unity, and sounds by cfxr, it’s the first near-game I’ve ever made that I’ve found fun to play too. I’d like to run with this as part of a bigger game later on, but for now it’s a standalone thing. You spawn with a randomly-selected weapon (pistol, machine gun, RPG or railgun) and have to face off against the blue team AI bots in a capture-the-flag match. It kinda sorta loosely fits the theme 😀

A typical match takes me 10-15 mins and gameplay is optimized for a gamepad (but works with the mouse too).

Complete with id-tech-style console, too. No I won’t tell you what the cheats are.

Coffee Quest 2600 Postmortem

Just posted the postmortem of Coffee Quest 2600. It is located at http://blazinggames.blogspot.ca/2014/03/coffee-quest-2600-postmortem.html . The game is my Coffee Quest game as it would have been like on the Atari 2600 keeping the hardware limitations of the system in mind. And boy does it have limitations.

Quick summary:
What Went Right – emulating TIA  playfield registers
Mixed Blessings – the map
What Went Wrong – Not able to write it for the 2600 (yet)

Mini LD 50: Xeldas Saga

This is my entry for Mini LD 50: Demakes inspired by The Legend of Zelda.

Xeldas Saga – Play now!
Xeldas Saga

Play as Rink and save Xelda by finding a magical artifact in forgotten ruins. Jump, Shield and Attack. It is a web game – a real web game: You can play it right now in your browser without any plugins!

Rink attacks an octoroc

What went right

  • The graphics and the music were very easy to create :) I use GIMP and beepbox.co.
Actually the sprite of Rink was done quite some time ago and i finally wanted to make a game with it.
  • Thanks to Tiled i did not have to write my own Map-Editor, instead i googled for a way to load Tiled maps to JS and display them on a canvas and found a tutorial at: http://hashrocket.com/blog/posts/using-tiled-and-canvas-to-render-game-screens
  • I used circles as a collision detection which is very easy to code and still very accurate. You can see the collision system at work by pressing [ENTER] ingame.

What went wrong

  • I dont know if this qualifies as wrong, but it took me a little longer than 2 days, because i worked on the game during normal week days and not the weekend. I hope 3 week days equal 2 weekend days. Also working on the game reduced my preferred sleeping time by some hours, but that was already out of order and so i just slept as much as i did before the MiniLD.
  • The interaction mechanics are not introduced ingame, so you have to know from other Zelda games, that the electrically charged slimes should/can not be attacked, and you have to find out yourself, how to use the shield (Press down 😉 ).
  • I did not have enough time to create a challenging boss ai :(
  • The Game is short.
  • Google Drive seems to have a hidden download limit, so i had to delete and reupload the audio files multiple times. Maybe that was because i reloaded the page too often during debugging. Is Dropbox better? – AHRG! It happend again. And again…

Oh, look, someone wrote something about me :) I feel important

First post, MiniLD & other stuff…?

So I figured I might as well post something on here just because.

So I decided to join Ludum Dare, but I’m not good enough to compete in the real one so for now I’ll just join the mini ones :3
However, what I’ll be doing for the MiniLD is a secret, so this (I hope) will be pretty fun 😀

Also, around 1-2 months ago I created a program where you type in the number of sides a die has and it rolls it for you (so really it’s just a random number generator) but if you would ever like to have it then… here it is.
Last night I also managed to create a timer that alerts you with the sound effects from the system files. However, this only works sometimes (for whatever reason seems fit) and it only works with Windows (all of them, as far as I know), so if you ever decide to help improve this program then be my guest 😀

In fact, if you would like to improve either of these then I would be pretty glad :) Just send an email to liesfromalizard@gmail.com

That’s all for now, so see ya at the MiniLD #50 😀

Free Resource Friday (/Monday) – Week 3

Free Resource Friday has it’s third item: A program called Colour Picker.

This program allows you to quickly pick a pixel’s colour from the screen and get its hexadecimal and RGB value.

Go get it at theupgradezone.com

If you think that extra features need to be added, leave a message on this post :)

Release: Fallout: Vault 17

Following this MiniLD’s theme — ‘demake’ — I’ve made a Fallout semi-demake set in vault 17, where Lily (Fallout: NV) originally came from. It tells a story of upheaval and love: how life in a functioning and prosperous vault was abruptly ended.

There’s a mish-mash of things from various Fallout games throughout. It’s a kind of collage of the first two Fallouts’ vault design and Fallout 3’s first few Vault 101 quests. Plus, there’s a fair number of references and generally trivial stuff in there.

This is both my first LD entry and my first ever game. In total, it took about five nights to make. It’s much longer than I’d anticipated — over 12,000 words apparently — so I can’t believe I even managed it in five. Considering it was written so fast, there may well be misspellings, grammatical oddities, bugs etc. If you do happen to find any, or just want to give me some feedback, please leave a comment or email snoother@outlook.com! I’d really appreciate it.

You can play it here.

My entry for miniLD-50: Starcraft Demake

Finally got to a quite complete version of my demake for miniLD-50: Starcraft Demake!

battlecruiser overlord zerg-den zergling

I’m still using Flash, but some notable things I experimented with this time:
– Player.IO: I incorporated the multiplayer API of player.io (now under Yahoo). It’s pretty good! I had to work on my forgotten C# skills but was able to implement the client and server side by side, upload the server code and have it run flawlessly. This is one of the smoothest workflow I had working on a multiplayer game, and that’s probably why it’s the only multiplayer game I feel I completed successfully.

– Pixel Dorado: Also experimented with doing the art with this drawing program I made. It’s not released yet. I used to do art in Flash, but I found that I’m not a great vector artist, especially without any tools like wacom tablets, ect… I made this drawing tool so I can feel comfortable drawing. It’s called Pixel Dorado, it has no colors but it fits well my need.

Anyway, check it out. It’s Starcraft watered down, but it’s still multiplayer!

Broken Cards for MiniLD#50…

Hey people,

I made a little game for MiniLD#50, too. Took me some time, but here it is :

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/minild-50/?action=preview&uid=20047

I thought it would be fun to demake a survival horror style game as a card game, and… it was fun! :)

Took a bit longer than I thought, but as I never tried to make this kind of game before, it was a good learning experience.

The game isn’t that bad, really… You might want to try it ! ;)
