It’s cold, where’s my hat?

Try out my latest Mini-LD creation: Skyray. It’s a Skyrim demake featuring a large map, lots of snow, and terribly difficult combat.

If you like the game, please send me a tweet @deathraygames about what you would like added next. I have a plan for further development but will only bother with it if people are interested. I can even add you in as an NPC! :)

If you like Skyrim there are three others from the last dare: Old Books, Demake Scrolls, Skywhim.

If you hit Esc it goes to the menu and zooms in if you keep hitting it it keeps zooming in and does not zoom back out all the way. 😛

Library that I’ll use for LD #29!

Here is my own library that ill use for Ludum Dare #29 and ill release it to you guys aswell.
This is a game engine and its still in development so i dont have a wiki or anything but i release it now so you can play around in it, if this is used you must include credits in your game(the game startupscreen will be fine).
If you have any questions about the engine or want to help/join our team, contact me on email: flash13records@gmail.com or on skype: v7_flash

Finding a Team

You can work alone, but should you? Don’t stretch yourself too thin or you could burn out fast. So how do you find a team? Some people use Reddit, others use forums, and if you are lucky enough you work with or go to class with others you can add to your team.

How do you find a team? Let everyone know, a new Ludum Dare is just around the corner, don’t go alone.

My team came together from members of online communities we frequent, and we organize remotely via Trello and Skype. Works really well!

Dankest Dungeon – a Gameboy Roguelike Demake

Greetings from the Victory Garden team. For our Mini LD 50 submission, we demade Red Hook Game’s upcoming squad management roguelike Darkest Dungeon, in the style of a Gameboy classic! The game’s not been released yet, so we had to take liberties here and there, but we did our best to stay true to the spirit of the game. Feel free to share your feedback and High Scores over on the project page!

There are a lot more features we wanted to get to, including more monsters, Camp and passive Party Leader skills, a surface and dungeon shops, and a classic Text String save feature. If people like this well enough, we’ll put together a Post-Compo Version with these features and more. But after a few day’s rest… it’s been intense!

...or the stone tile floor, as the case may be.

…or the stone tile floor, as the case may be.

All assets, design, and the game engine itself were produced for the Mini LD 50 Jam. Other than a pre-existing Java code base, and a handful of graphical assets, all content and features were created within 72 hours (with a small break taken between sessions, because it was a practice run). The game was coded using LWJGL, and managed via Trello. Audio was produced using BFXR, Reaper, and featured the Elder Thing VST plugin. Story stylistic development was inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s Huis Clos and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Character names came from Behind The Name.com, and additional names and literary references run the gamut from European and Greek Mythology, classic Combat RPGs, and H.P. Lovecraft, to works of gothic literature

If you like our stuff, feel free to check out our new devblog, Victory Garden Games, where we’ll be talking about LD plans, as well as some of our upcoming projects! Thanks a ton, and I hope you have a great time playing our game.

‘Arena CTF’ – 2D Quake-3-style Capture the Flag

Having never entered LD before, it just so happened that MiniLD 50 coincided with my desire to build a top-down 2D dual-stick Quake-3-Arena-style capture the flag game out of a prototype I’d been working on for a couple days but had no purpose for; a perfect candidate for ‘demakes’!

Sprites drawn on iPad (in Sprite Something), game built in Unity, and sounds by cfxr, it’s the first near-game I’ve ever made that I’ve found fun to play too. I’d like to run with this as part of a bigger game later on, but for now it’s a standalone thing. You spawn with a randomly-selected weapon (pistol, machine gun, RPG or railgun) and have to face off against the blue team AI bots in a capture-the-flag match. It kinda sorta loosely fits the theme 😀

A typical match takes me 10-15 mins and gameplay is optimized for a gamepad (but works with the mouse too).

Complete with id-tech-style console, too. No I won’t tell you what the cheats are.

Mini LD 50: Xeldas Saga

This is my entry for Mini LD 50: Demakes inspired by The Legend of Zelda.

Xeldas Saga – Play now!
Xeldas Saga

Play as Rink and save Xelda by finding a magical artifact in forgotten ruins. Jump, Shield and Attack. It is a web game – a real web game: You can play it right now in your browser without any plugins!

Rink attacks an octoroc

What went right

  • The graphics and the music were very easy to create :) I use GIMP and beepbox.co.
Actually the sprite of Rink was done quite some time ago and i finally wanted to make a game with it.
  • Thanks to Tiled i did not have to write my own Map-Editor, instead i googled for a way to load Tiled maps to JS and display them on a canvas and found a tutorial at: http://hashrocket.com/blog/posts/using-tiled-and-canvas-to-render-game-screens
  • I used circles as a collision detection which is very easy to code and still very accurate. You can see the collision system at work by pressing [ENTER] ingame.

What went wrong

  • I dont know if this qualifies as wrong, but it took me a little longer than 2 days, because i worked on the game during normal week days and not the weekend. I hope 3 week days equal 2 weekend days. Also working on the game reduced my preferred sleeping time by some hours, but that was already out of order and so i just slept as much as i did before the MiniLD.
  • The interaction mechanics are not introduced ingame, so you have to know from other Zelda games, that the electrically charged slimes should/can not be attacked, and you have to find out yourself, how to use the shield (Press down 😉 ).
  • I did not have enough time to create a challenging boss ai :(
  • The Game is short.
  • Google Drive seems to have a hidden download limit, so i had to delete and reupload the audio files multiple times. Maybe that was because i reloaded the page too often during debugging. Is Dropbox better? – AHRG! It happend again. And again…

Oh, look, someone wrote something about me :) I feel important

First post, MiniLD & other stuff…?

So I figured I might as well post something on here just because.

So I decided to join Ludum Dare, but I’m not good enough to compete in the real one so for now I’ll just join the mini ones :3
However, what I’ll be doing for the MiniLD is a secret, so this (I hope) will be pretty fun 😀

Also, around 1-2 months ago I created a program where you type in the number of sides a die has and it rolls it for you (so really it’s just a random number generator) but if you would ever like to have it then… here it is.
Last night I also managed to create a timer that alerts you with the sound effects from the system files. However, this only works sometimes (for whatever reason seems fit) and it only works with Windows (all of them, as far as I know), so if you ever decide to help improve this program then be my guest 😀

In fact, if you would like to improve either of these then I would be pretty glad :) Just send an email to liesfromalizard@gmail.com

That’s all for now, so see ya at the MiniLD #50 😀

Free Resource Friday (/Monday) – Week 3

Free Resource Friday has it’s third item: A program called Colour Picker.

This program allows you to quickly pick a pixel’s colour from the screen and get its hexadecimal and RGB value.

If you think that extra features need to be added, leave a message on this post :)

Release: Fallout: Vault 17

Following this MiniLD’s theme — ‘demake’ — I’ve made a Fallout semi-demake set in vault 17, where Lily (Fallout: NV) originally came from. It tells a story of upheaval and love: how life in a functioning and prosperous vault was abruptly ended.

There’s a mish-mash of things from various Fallout games throughout. It’s a kind of collage of the first two Fallouts’ vault design and Fallout 3’s first few Vault 101 quests. Plus, there’s a fair number of references and generally trivial stuff in there.

This is both my first LD entry and my first ever game. In total, it took about five nights to make. It’s much longer than I’d anticipated — over 12,000 words apparently — so I can’t believe I even managed it in five. Considering it was written so fast, there may well be misspellings, grammatical oddities, bugs etc. If you do happen to find any, or just want to give me some feedback, please leave a comment or email snoother@outlook.com! I’d really appreciate it.

You can play it here.

My entry for miniLD-50: Starcraft Demake

Finally got to a quite complete version of my demake for miniLD-50: Starcraft Demake!

battlecruiser overlord zerg-den zergling

I’m still using Flash, but some notable things I experimented with this time:
– Player.IO: I incorporated the multiplayer API of player.io (now under Yahoo). It’s pretty good! I had to work on my forgotten C# skills but was able to implement the client and server side by side, upload the server code and have it run flawlessly. This is one of the smoothest workflow I had working on a multiplayer game, and that’s probably why it’s the only multiplayer game I feel I completed successfully.

– Pixel Dorado: Also experimented with doing the art with this drawing program I made. It’s not released yet. I used to do art in Flash, but I found that I’m not a great vector artist, especially without any tools like wacom tablets, ect… I made this drawing tool so I can feel comfortable drawing. It’s called Pixel Dorado, it has no colors but it fits well my need.

Anyway, check it out. It’s Starcraft watered down, but it’s still multiplayer!

Broken Cards for MiniLD#50…

Hey people,

I made a little game for MiniLD#50, too. Took me some time, but here it is :

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/minild-50/?action=preview&uid=20047

I thought it would be fun to demake a survival horror style game as a card game, and… it was fun! :)

Took a bit longer than I thought, but as I never tried to make this kind of game before, it was a good learning experience.

The game isn’t that bad, really… You might want to try it ! ;)

It is a first person shooter demake of Wolfenstein 3D. I made it because… well… some people asked me why I think Wolf3D would ever need a demake. I don’t quite know. I just did it. woops.

I also have a timelapse video up for people interested:

Tank Capture Pro

An update of what I’ve been doing since last Ludum Dare.

I moved to Victoria, B.C.  and now am much closer to the ‘dev scene’, which is cool.  This week I got my computer back and started poking around at HTML 5 Web API stuff.

tcp

My First HTML 5 Game

It uses the Web Socket interface for networking and Web GL via Three.js for graphics.   For networking I made a very simple system that transmits JSON messages over the network;  Just a quick, dirty solution that covers a lot of bases with little overhead.  I can always optimize it later.   For graphics I made a sort of height-map/voxel based geometry generator.  It took a lot of tries to get rid of geometry and texture seaming problems, but once I did it really started to look quite beautiful.

Another perk is that levels are super easy to draw and import into the game.

I learned a lot of things from how to manipulate geometry, load meshes, preload textures, texture arrays, creating geometry, how shaders work, optimizing the GPU pipeline, and of coarse how to implement the Web Socket protocol.

What really blows my mind is how easy it is to put HTML over-top of GPU-rendered canvas.  Good job web browsers.  Good job. This HTML 5 Web Api  thing is really coming along after all these years.

What is done so far.

  • Preloader for models, textures, text files, json files, and sound files.
  • Networking / communication
  • Nice smooth collision detection
  • Geometry from level data generator (voxel generator)
  • Geometry art.
  • Tank models
  • Title screen and server/client flow.

tcp2What is left.

  • Dead reckoning.
  • Anti-cheat system.
  • Chat & admin features.
  • Shooting & exploding.
  • Capture the flag
  • Track stats

What inspired this?

I’ve been playing Tag-pro  and it reminded me of fun e-sport experiences from days past such as BZFlag, ARC, Subspace, and Uniball to name a few.   There’s a simplicity to these games that is zen-like.  You don’t program the tactics, you program the basic mechanics and the tactics and team play that emerge are always quite brilliant and in-depth.

This game is a lot like BZ Flag with some elements from tag-pro and ARC in there.

Making a pro-gamer game.

I’ve never been into the pro-gaming scene, so I thought I’d try to meet the challenge of making a game that can really satisfy the needs of a pro action gamer.

Simplicity is key.   There are so many demands beyond simple mechanics in pro games like stats and records; ranked tournaments; administration; forums; clans/guilds; and events.

How can I help

#1 Beta testing: If you would like to help me do some beta testing, find me on #LudumDare on Afternet.org

#2 If you have any other tips, hints, strategies or suggestion you think I might find useful, please reply to this post.

Thanks

Hatchet and Crank – Finally Done!

The Ratchet and Clank demake is finally finished :)

You are Hatchet. The last of your kind. Robots want you to be the dead last of your kind. Survive as long as you can! Where’s Crank? He’s hitching a ride on your back. He does nothing except watch. Like the lazy robot he is.

Go take a look at the entry :)

“Super Daddyload” Main Menu

Currently working on a Super Motherload DEMAKE and here is a yet-to-be finalized version of the main menu!

Daddyload Menu

Have also been working on art assets and the core programming. Movement & Gravity has been created as well as a broken “mining system”.

MiniLD 50: Demaking Gravity Rush

I can’t believe I missed the MiniLD 50 announcement earlier! Demakes is such an exciting theme to work with. I would have loved to have jumped on the bandwagon weeks ago.

Luckily, it looks like submissions will be open for another day or so, so I decided to polish my collision detection and platformer skills and demake Gravity Rush, one of the PlayStation Vita’s most unique games.

I’ve decided the best way to go about this demake is to strip out everything except the gem collecting aspect. Collect enough gems and you’ll have the power to escape the map by flying (or rather, “falling”) upwards through a narrow vertical shaft. I got all of the gravity mechanics and collision detection in place this evening. The player can float in place, fall in any of four directions, and walk and jump normally on walls and ceilings, so long as the power bar isn’t depleted.

The art is placeholder-y right now, but here’s a gif of it in action, with the player’s sprite pointing the direction gravity is currently directed:
vertigo_progress01

I work tomorrow, so I won’t have too much time before the deadline, but I have some of the world designed on paper, and if I can implement that, then I’ll try and make a nicer player sprite.

“Two Options…” post-compo: [insert long title here]

It’s been a while since LD#28 and I finally finished the post-compo version of my game. I’ve been planning to write here about it, but I wanted to do so after writing a postmortem… Well, since I don’t see myself writing it any time soon, here it is:

Click to play

Click to play

If you remember this game, it was called “Two options…”. Quite a literal name, given the “story” in the game. But for this version, I’ve modified way too many things to call it the same way. Before, the game was about wanting to save both people at the end of the dungeon, though you could only save on (bad use of the theme, naming and idea overall…. =X).

Now, it’s a game about exploring a dungeon and finding the one treasure you want. You could try to get another treasure, but you’ll only be able to bring back one! (not quite the use of the theme, but much better than the previous one). Other then that, I also fixed many bugs: the graphics don’t turn into a ladder frame randomly, you stand atop ladders, spikes kill only from above, and many others I can’t remember anymore.

But most of all modifications, while this game had as few as 9 (or 10… I don’t remember really well) levels, this new version has 35 new levels! It’s something I’m really proud, since I’ve never made anything so big. Also, since many people said the game was hard (and a friend said the game could be harder)… I tried up the difficulty… quite a lot. XD There’s a death counter, which at first had only two digits… after testing with other people (and myself), I’ve changed to four digits (though no one needed more than three, so far). I tried to make it get harder slowly, though…

... and making this image helped motivating me to create more. XD

There are this many levels, now…

One thing that annoyed me a lot was the music. It was, as the ones from my entries since LD#26, way to generic… it didn’t feel right to me. Now the game has 9 (short) tracks and it sounds much better overall. There’s still room for improvement (like the intro and the second song), but I’m quite happy with how it sounds now.

I ended writing a sort of postmortem thing… cool! Thanks if you’ve read this far and, if you haven’t yet, way not give it a try? :)

(and if you did play it, feedback is always welcomed! I’m planning to expand it… sometime…)

MiniLD 50 – MiniLands

Hey guys, had to pause development for a while because of school, but the submission deadline was extended (woohoo) so I could finish it off today.

I found demaking to be a really inspiring theme. Having so many ideas you’re not sure what to go with is always a nice problem to have! I went with Borderlands in the end. If you have a moment, please give it a go, or maybe watch the video instead/as well? 😀

love the art and animation, for some reason the walk cycle just looks great…

Er Aran – recreated just in time for MiniLD

With much luck I was able to submit my Entry yesterday.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/minild-50/?action=preview&uid=26454 Here is the link

Under the roof of an old library I found what I believe to be the oldest game of the extinct mankind.
Er Aran – one of the many names which were given to this lost game over the centuries.
I recreated it, and although it is probably not how it looked more than five millenia ago, it is as close as it gets.

Looking for help with game :)

Hey guys, Currently I’m looking for help with a game I plan on making. I will be making the game in Game Maker Studio. I need some people to help. The work is voluntary, so their is no pay although it would be pretty cool if you could help me with the game. Idea for the game: The game is a 2D version of a game called DayZ which some of you may have heard of.

I need: An Artist(Someone to make the game textures and whatnot).
A sound guy(Someone to make the sounds for the game).
A programmer(Although not totally required, this would help).
Also last but not least someone with knowledge of shaders(This will help make the game look more fancy) 😀

I feel that this game would be good if I can get some people to help me with it. -James P.S. Comment below if you would like to take part in the project 😉

Thanks,

-James

Let the “I’m In” Posts Floweth Forth

Last LD, a lot of people were having trouble with getting motivated, including myself. I attributed this at the time to a strange lack of the usual pre-event hype. To prevent the same thing happening again, I have decided that the “I’m In” postings should commence as soon as possible. So here’s mine!

Hello, everyone! I feel like I’m meeting an old friend again already– not only because it’s been so long since I’ve had Twitter to talk about games with, but because it’s been even longer since I’ve had only Ludum Dare and no Twitter. Those were the days. I’ve been on hiatus from Twitter for a while, you see, and it’s been nice, but I do miss the spontaneous conversation.

Allow me to introduce myself, just because I can. I’m Tim, formerly Puzzlem00n until I recently decided that screen names are annoying, I’m 15, and I make games!~on occasion! Coincidentally, a couple days ago marked the two-year anniversary of the day I first joined this site and revealed myself to the internet. I’ve done five Ludums since then, and it would have been six, too, if it weren’t for that meddling motivation loss. I’ll get away with it this time!

Upon getting to know me, you’ll find that my general personality traits include: arbitrary loss of willpower, strange mixings of optimism and cynicism, no desire to understand low-level code concepts, ranting self-deprecatingly about life problems, switching interests from games to writing/animation/comics, not actually liking to play games, giving unneeded advice (OR SO YOU’LL SAY), and making lists. Other than all that, I’m told I’m pretty rad!

So what have I been doing lately, I’ll pretend your asking? Well, I’m trying to put together my personal website AND find a way to update it with content five or six days a week! See the extremely early WIP timbump.us, the greatest domain name ever conceived (world record pending).

The point is, I’m going to be doing this. And I mean I really am going to do this. And if I’m lucky, this is going to be the beginning of a new age of Tim.

Of course, that’s what I said back on New Years’… =)

(My toolset will be revealed semi-dramatically in my next post.)

The GameCreator, a web based game editor, no coding required, drag and drop it together, has a special Ludumdare 29 offer: access most features including full analytics during the LD29 weekend and 3 weeks of voting. Use the promo code: “Ludumdare29” after registration.

Just to confirm, is the AGK app development kit freebie a 100% no strings attached freebie, or is it a free weekend type deal where I have to pay for it after the competition ends?

So, just to clarify, is the AGK App Game Kit free for the duration of Ludum Dare or free if you use it to make a game FOR this Ludum Dare?

Does this Loom offer also work for those that got Indie licenses last year, and maaaybe didn’t yet get around to using Loom on a project?

Hey All

As usual, I’m glad to provide a copy of Voxatron for any LD’ers who want to use it for quick voxelly graphics. You can export models to .obj/.mtl or as raw txt/png files from the designer by pressing escape for console and typing “export blah.obj”, “export blah.txt”, “export blah.png”, or “export blah%d.png” (for a bunch of separate slices).

Sir, I must say you have an excellent username.

I’m in! And this post’s permalink doesn’t end with a number!

So, I’ve done every main Ludum Dare since LD23! That’s 6 LD’s, and it means that this Ludum Dare will mark two years since my first one. Wow! You know, I like Minecraft (if not as much as I used to), but introducing me to this event is the best thing Notch ever did for me.

So – here are the tools I will be using!

  • OS: Linux Mint 13. Because I don’t feel like updating.
  • Platform: Haxe with OpenFL. I’ll be exporting to Flash, Windows, Linux, and hopefully even Mac just because it’s easy!
  • Library: HaxePunk. I’ve been making a game with HaxePunk, and I love it.
  • Image editor: Aseprite. I’ll probably use GIMP for some other stuff, too.
  • Tilesetting: GoTile. I made this one! Hooray! I’m very proud of this, it’s a lot like a *coughcough*better*cough* version of AutoTileGen Free. More of feature, fewer of bug. It’s not as good as the paid version, though.
  • Text Editor: Sublime Text 2. The shareware version that pops up a “buy me” window every few Ctrl+S’s. I feel guilty about not buying a license for my favorite text editor, but I can’t afford a text editor I already have for $70.
  • Timelapse: I think gLapse this time. Partly because I’m so happy that it’s a program with better support for Linux than for Windows! Woohoo!
  • Streaming: Castawesome. I’m glad I finally found a GUI program for streaming on Linux!
  • Sound: sfxr and Audacity. My results in LD28 were shameful, but at least I got a decent score in audio thanks to SFXRdacity!

So, that’s it! I can’t wait for the highlight of my, um… triannuum to get started! Let’s all have fun this Ludum Dare! And try hovering over some (all) of those links, why don’t you?

Ludum Dare 29 Trophies!

This Ludum Dare, I will be giving trophies to the winners of each category.

Which made me think, why not make it a regular thing? Why not automatically give people trophies if they win a category? So that people can see what other people won at a glance.

I think it’s a suggestion worth thinking about. I know it may take time to code but I think it’s a neat idea :)

They also look good. So, they will be a cool thing to have :)

These are the ones I have done so far:

Trophy_Innovation Innovation: A gear, because it is supposed to represent the inner workings of the code

Trophy_FunFun: Balloons and streamers! (Thanks to The4thCircle for the idea)

Trophy_ThemeTheme: A star. Because, I thought that would represent it best

Trophy_GraphicsGraphics: A paint brush and pallet, obviously

Trophy_AudioAudio: A golden record

Trophy_HumorHumor: A jester’s hat (Thanks to PoV for the idea)

Trophy_MoodMood: The iconic happy and sad face from theater

Trophy_OverallOverall: The Ludum Dare Joystick!

Trophy_CommunityCommunity: A globe, because the community is worldwide

Trophy_CoolnessCoolness: Some cool shades (Thanks to Junber for the idea)

For each LD challenge, there will be a number on each trophy:

Trophy Number

If it is a Jam category, it will have ‘Jam’ on it:

Trophy Jam

So what do you think? A cool idea? Could it be a permanent thing?

Plus, please message me or leave a comment if you have any suggestions!

Thanks :)

Howdy from PIXEL^3’s composer

So, uh

I think we’re entering this time round as a team, which sounds all peachy, so expect something substantial. I’ve improved massively since LD27 (and let us not speak of my failed LD28 entry) so we hopefully shouldn’t give you something that looks and plays like a dream but slowly kills your eardrums.

Gonna see if I can get Ace (graphics) and Jello (programming) to give a shout-out too.

~MK/Emelia Kaylee

Ludum Dare 29 Theme Slaughter!!

ENDING SOON! GO SLAUGHTER NOW!

With over 3000 themes suggested by the community, how do we make that more manageable? With this!

It’s like hot-or-not for Ludum Dare themes. Click the graphic above, and keep clicking until you can click no more! Every click helps, and we’ve got a lot more to filter than last time, so click more and click often!

Next week we kick off Warmup Weekend (April 19th-20th), and begin main Theme Voting. So tune in for that. Things are getting real here. I hope you like the new purple look too (might require a refresh). This is our first major event of 2014, and our 12th year running Ludum Dare. Lets make it a good year!

Special thanks again to Sorceress for preparing the theme list for me.

Let’s Do This

Here we go, year #2 of me doing Ludum Dare! I am pumped and excited for this year, as always, but I can’t decide what I am going to use…… hmmmmmmmmmm….

Okay, after much thought I have decided: I am going to use Unity because why not? I can use it to create a 3D/2D web game easily. So right of the bat I don’t have to worry about the engine too much and I can focus on the game play. I do have some experience with Unity but this will be a real test of my knowledge with Unity. I will probs use gimp as my image editor and one of the free sound effect creators for sound effects, and maybe garage band for the bg music. I don’t expect anything too amazing but I do expect something at least fun. Well, he we go guys, #29.

I’m in

Hello guys, in the last two months I was learning the basics of C++ and now I think i can make a game with it.

Here is what I will be using:

Language: C++

Framework: SFML 2.1

IDE: Visual Studio 2013 Express Edition

Graphics: Paint.NET

Sound: SFXR

I livestream!

Yea, that’s right. I livestream most things I do. Go take a look and get involved at MY TWITCH STREAM.

I am SO in!

Hello all! Though this is my first technical Ludum Dare, I have been watching the blog for some time, and I have done a couple of the MiniLD’s (Never submitted any). I am so psyched to be entering for real this time! So, let’s get to it! (All links open in new tab)

My tools will be:
Platform: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Libraries: LWJGL and Slick (slick_utils)
Sound: SFXR and Audacity
Art: Paint.NET
Tilesetting: GoTile (Thanks Pitzik4!)

As I’ve said, can’t wait for this to start! Meh, I think there should be another sentence here, but I don’t know what to put. I guess these filler sentences will do!

// Ion_

LD#29 – THIRDED!

After a kind of successful beginning, and an almost-failed attempt, I’m in for Ludum Dare 48 again – now, at the third time!

Everything is the same.

Language: Lua
Libraries: LÖVE
Coding: Notepad++ with LÖVE compiler
Graphics: Paint.NET
Sound effect source: SFXR (the SFX generator that was specially designed for LD)

About miscellaneous, things are a little bit different again.

Streaming/recording: I should make a Youtube livestream; only for non-Hungarian guys this time. I’m still thinking about it though, since I don’t wanna talk in English only, though 48 hours.
Energy source: after the experiences of 2 LD events, I guess I should F&CKIN’ SLEEP INSTEAD OF ADDICTING ON CAFFEIN

It’s happening.

Despite being up against people who are probably ~10-20 years older than me (I am 11) I thought I would take part in Ludum Dare 29 for the sake of it. I don’t know how this is going to turn out, but all I know is that:

  • Sprites will be made in a MSpaint like program
  • Music will be made in SunVox
  • Sounds made with sfxr (cfxr since I am using OSX)
  • Will be written in Python using the PyGame library

I am super excited! All I know is that I am going to need quite a bit of caffeinated drinks and pizza to keep me going.

You ready for Jam? Pixel^3 is ready for Jam.

And so is the artist. (me) Since the last LD I’ve been training in the mountains with the 7 pixel art masters in the mysterious ways of Pixel-fu and I can gladly say that there has been amazing improvement.

Okay I’ve been lurking Pixelation and have made marginal improvement. Pixeling is hard guys. Either way we’re back as a team and ready to dev a game worth it’s salt and pepper.

~Ace/AlucardX60

I’m in.

I’m in. Just before the compo (on the wednesday before) I have probably the most important exam in school I’ve had up to this point. Thankfully it’s just before, not after, I would be f#cked in that case.

So, to the compo stuff:

I’m going to do 2D and pixel art this time too, I *might* do 3D and pixel art but not sure.

Programs/stuff I use:
Language – Java
Library – Pixel array on a Java Canvas or LibGDX. Probably the former.
Code – Eclipse
Graphics – Paint.NET
SFX – bfxr.net
Music – Beepbox.co/iNudge.net/Qtractor, one of those, depending on how I’m feeling. If clicky, the first 2, if feeling like playing actual music, Qtractor.

I’m in, and you can watch the failure!

So Ludum Dare 29 is a thing, and I’m going to stream the entire thing live on twitch.tv/gigitrix!

I’m going to be streaming the ENTIRE Ludum Dare (sans ~8 hours sleep!) at twitch.tv/gigitrix!

Technologies/Tools planned:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • JS/HTML5 Canvas Game Frontend
  • Paint.NET Art
  • Audacity/Bfxr/generated sound (if sound is added)
  • Ubuntu VM with Sublime Text

For info of when this happens etc. please follow or monitor @tobypinder on twitter, which I’ll be updating with details as it happens!

I’m in!

Theme song of the whole weekend:

My Tools:

We’re in, and keen to code!

We’re back for the 6th time now, and hoping for success! Every entry has been better than the previous ones, so this month should go off with a bang! Hopefully we can come up with something fun and funny.

As usual, we’ll be coding in Java, using Eclipse (possibly using our own 2D Physics library if we get around to finishing it).
For graphics, either Paint.NET or Photoshop, depending on the style we choose.
Music will be made in Ableton Live.
Food will be excessively consumed.

We shall keep you updated. Happy coding everyone!

I’m in for the second time!

I’ve been learning how to code games in HTML5 for the last month, and for the first time, I think I’m ready to make a good game for this upcoming Ludumdare.

  • Code : JS and Html5
  • Framework : Phaser.io
  • Music and Sounds: Sfxr and Audacity
  • Graphics: Photohsop

I also decided to post my progress on my new game dev blog http://gikdew.com, feel free to go there, comment and check out my last game Circula.

Ludum Dare Round 2: I’m in!

Hey everyone!
Can’t wait for my second Ludum Dare to be under way!
I was pretty happy with my first one, funnily enough it was probably the most complete game I’ve ever made. :P
But I definitely want this one to be better, more polished atleast. :D
I’ll be using Unity and C#.
My “art” for the lack of a better term will probably be done in Paint.net or Gimp. :)
Anyway, best of luck to everyone!

I’m in for LD#29!

I’m getting so excited!  Can’t wait to see what the potential themes are going to be.

I’ll be using the nearly the same technology I used last time, with a few choice changes:

  • Html 5 Canvas / Javascript using the awesome Phaser framework
  • Going to attempt to use the Pickle free trial for art.  If I like it, I’ll buy a license.  If I don’t like it, I’ll fall back to the trusted Gimp.
  • Might try Pitzik4’s GoTile for tileset generation
  • The incredibly Free Abundant-Music for random music generation
  • The equally incredibly free BFXR for random game sound generation
  • Sublime Text 2 for code editing.  Perfect lightweight code editor.
  • GitHub for source control management
  • My own website to host the finished product
  • Chronolapse for time lapse capture.  Last LD I tried to stream my work, but I quickly discovered my internet connection just isn’t strong enough to stream at any decent quality.  So, instead, I’m going to capture my process via time lapse.

First-timer in for LD 29 Compo

Hi everyone!

I’ve been following Ludum Dare for a while now and have been wanting to get in on one. Finally the timing is right for me to join, so I’ll be entering in the LD29 Compo.

I’ve been using GameMaker as a hobbyist for over 10 years now and recently have decided to push myself to get more serious about game development. I’ll be developing in GameMaker: Studio, making sounds with SFXR, music in Reason 4, and graphics with a combination of photoshop, and GameMaker’s sprite editor.

I await the theme announcement excitedly! Good luck everyone!

My body is ready!

Im going to do this for the third  time now!

Used tools will be:

IDE: Eclipse

Language: Java

Libraries: Slick2D and LWJGL

Drawing: Paint.net

Sounds: sfxr and Audacity

I will stream all my work on twitch.tv/jecba aswell!

Now we just need to wait for the whole thing to begin!

Well, I guess I’m in.

I guess I’m in guys! I hope for a good theme, because I am planning to make a non-regular-ish type of game. I’m also very excited because this will be my first entry ever 😛 I will probably make it in C#.. So, see you guys in 15 days or so! Have a great time.

Rule Clarification – Base Code

Each LD I’ve been starting with an entirely blank page, using only one library (jQuery). Part of that has been because all my games have been very different so far, but I’m thinking that if I want to do a game similar to an older one then I probably don’t want to start from scratch.

construction

From the rules:

Base code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry.

Are there any restrictions on base code / personal code libraries? Does this mean it’s legit to use most of the code of an old game, recreate the art assets, and create a sequel?

Leave a comment — How do you handle this; what base code do you start with?

My interpretation is based on an older writing of the rules that made this a bit more obvious. Reading rule 2, though, makes me think this is still the intent. Starter code cannot have any specific game-related logic. If it’s boilerplate, like the code to get a screen up, that’s not game specific. If it’s a utility function, like find me a path between two points, that’s not game specific. If it’s “find the player, path to him, once a ray test shows a clean shot, shoot him with this bullet”, that’s game specific logic and is not valid. Unfortunately things like Unity and Gamemaker blur the line between what’s game specific and what’s not (Unity’s character controllers seem sketchy to me).
11. Apr 2014 · 19:10 UTC
Well, there are a ton of people who use AS3 and start with the very expansive Flixel. So my rule has always been “Anything the people who use Flixel can start with, I can start with.”
12. Apr 2014 · 06:09 UTC
That’s an easy one. Basically it comes down to availability:
deathray
12. Apr 2014 · 14:57 UTC
Madpew’s interpretation is definitely more liberal, and would allow for a sequel or re-skinning of a previous game (so long as the code was made public & openly licensed).

Second Time at the Rodeo

Last year was such great fun that I am definitely looking forward to this again.  A couple of events tried to encroach on this important weekend, but I have finally cordoned off the time needed for the compo.

My LD26 entry, Dehoarder, did well enough to garner a little press attention and a couple of Let’s Play videos.  This year, I’ll be aiming even higher.  I nearly cracked the top 100 in a couple of categories in LD26 (Humor and Innovation), so this time my goal is to make the top 25 in at least one category.

My toolset remains largely the same as last year:

Engine: Unity 3D

Graphics: Paint.Net, GIMP, NeoTexEdit

Sound: sfxr,bfxr,Audacity

Music: ? (last time I used cgMusic and SolMiRe to generate music. Might do the same this year, might do something different.)

Can’t wait until the 25th!  Looking forward to hacking out a great game and rating all of the other excellent entries!

For once, I can finish one!

It seems like the past 3 ludum dares I could not participate because something was keeping me from it. But finally I will be able to participate(unless the world comes to an end). I got the time off work and I have the money set aside to spend to much money on food.

I also have somebody who will be joining me in this LD, that to my surprise is really good at pixel art

Anyways I will be using these tools:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Library: LWJGL

Tile Editor: Tiled

Pixel Art: pdn

Good Luck, Herpdermit

Flappy birds???

The only thing I hope about ludumdare #29, is that anyone upload a remake of Flappy bird (unless is fucking awesome and fun), so please don’t make flappy birds!

Im In

I’m really looking forward to this Ludum Dare. I want to get into to 100.

Programming from scratch using java.

IDE: eclipse

Sound: SFXR

Graphics: Paint.NET

Music: there will probably be none but if i have time then i will use FamiTracker

Good luck to everyone else 😀 😀

If you want to get into top 100 overall (which I assume you mean), it’s going to take some skill. You’re not going to go from #1007 to #100 after three months is what I’m saying. (And that applies to me, too– I’ve never been close to the top 100 after 5 events.)

LD29: let the party start

Hello there!

At last I’ve managed to find the time to join a LD, yay! Been tracking jams for some years, playing and really enjoying their games and been missing participation one after another. But that’s over 😀

I’ve been at other local Game Jams but this feels like the next thing I’d do. My art won’t be nice, my music won’t be great, but there’s one thing I can do: programming. So, depending on the theme and the game, I’ll be using these tools:

  • Engine: Unity, Phaser. It really depends on what I come up with, but even if it’s 2D I may give Unity a go, I’m aiming for releasing it for Android at least (why not OUYA too?).
  • IDE: if using Unity I’d be programming in C# and Visual Studio 2012 will be the IDE. If using Phaser I’d use Sublime Text 2. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be using Sublime for non-code things (level files or similar).
  • Graphics: Photoshop, Illustrator or, if any close to pixel art, Aseprite.
  • Sound: Audacity, Bfxr.
  • Music: Abundant Music.
  • Source control: probably GitHub, maybe a local repo.

I’m really looking forward to it, pretty sure it’ll be fun :)
Enjoy it!

First timer

Aloha All!

I have wanted to do a LD for a long time. But I have never really felt like I had the ability nor the time to. I now feel I have the ability and the time. But most importantly I feel I can complete what I start!

My art will likely be horrible! My music will be amature, but I can program up a storm! I am planning to use the following:

  • Engine: I will likely use Unity. It really depends on the theme, I have been learning Unity and want to get some practice with it!
  • IDE: Unity built in Editor and/or Sublime Text 2.
  • Graphics: Photoshop and maybe something else if the need arises. I may try out aseprite if I go 2D.
  • Sound: Adobe Audition,  Audacity, BfxrSfxr.
  • Music: Likely Abundant Music.
  • Source control: local git repo.
  • Distribution: Windows before final release, Mac, Linux. Probably Android and maybe Web and/or iOS

I can’t wait to start!

Mahalo

Lets Do It

Hi all!

This time I’m gonna make something for Ludum Dare, I never worked in anything like this before so I hope I can do it well!

I can’t wait! I’ll try to be in the top 100, maybe i’ll be last xD! Haha!

I’m gonna be using the following depending on the theme:

  • Engine: I’ll be using Unity, i really love using it, maybe Multimedia Fusion 2 if I work with 2D.
  • IDE: If using Unity i’ll be with Monodevelop, it seems fine for me 😛
  • Graphics: Photoshop of course, maybe Paint Tool Sai too.
  • Sound: Audacity and Bfxr, may not be the best but it sounds great for me :3
  • Music: I’ll be using Abundant Music and GXSCC, maybe some reverb with audacity or something haha 😛
  • Source Control: I think i’ll use Github, that’s a nice place for it.
  • Distribution: Windows, and maybe Mac, Linux and Web before release.

Good luck to everyone!

I guess I’m in! :D

Okay so finally ill try to make something this time.It will be my first entry ever.I think only problem will be my art skills… Gosh..im so bad at creating art so wish me luck 😀 See you soon , Good Luck to ya all 😀

I find that if you can’t make art, the best solution is not to. If your game has to be entirely comprised of squares, then let it be so.

Obligatory “I’m in” post.

I think taking 2 days off my current project to work on something else will be a nice refresher. I am looking forward to participating.

Oh, I suppose I shall give some details.

Game Engine: GameMaker: Studio
Platform: HTML5/WebGL  (easier for everyone to play without a download)
Art: Photoshop CS5
Audio: Audacity/Mixcraft/Various Collections.
Favorite theme so far: Control Only the Beginning.

Best of luck to all the devs, and much love to everyone who put in the work to run #LD48!

4th Time In!

Hey guys, I’ve been taking part in the Ludum Dare competitions since April last year, and it would be an honour to take part for another year!

This time, I’ll be switching up my tools. Last year I primarily used Game Maker 8 on Windows, however I’ve recently turned to free solutions instead:

  • IDE: Sublime Text 3
  • Framework: HaxeFlixel (Haxe/OpenFL/Flixel). Definitely check it out if you haven’t already. It’s absolutely fantastic! (apparently they’ll be supporting consoles soon, that’s awesome!)
  • Art/Asset creation: GIMP
  • elementary OS. It’s a free Linux operating system based on Ubuntu. It looks amazing, and it’s lightning fast. Not sure about livestreaming with it though. We’ll see, I’ll do some tests soon.
  • As for music, I’ll switch over to Windows 7 half way through to use FL Studio.

The game I make will be uploaded to Itch.io, GameJolt, IndieDB, and the Google Play Store (see point below)

Expect the game I make to be released on all desktop operating systems (either Flash or native compilations), and Android Phones and Tablets. I will likely design the game with phones in mind.

Good luck everybody!

Oh, how I wish…

So, I might be able to participate, for a few hours.

My family is having a holiday and I was invited so I will have from the start time until the morning of the 26th.
I guess it’s going to be a pretty damn small game, but I will try nonetheless.

IDE: Visual Studio 2012Language/Libraries: C++ and OpenGL (and SFML for human interfacing)
Graphics: Photoshop CS5.1
Sound (if I get that far): BFXR and/or Bosca Ceoil

In i’m…wait.

Alas, another four months have come and gone, and another event has arrived. I never had the chance to attempt LD28, but I entered LD27 with the (not so) award winning game LIMIT, and during LD26 I gave birth to my ultimate creation known as Pix. On a side note, due to LD26 ending on April 29th, it will be Pix’s b-day in 16 days. This has given me the motivation to complete the sequel named Pix 2 (catchy, ey?) on 29th April, 2pm BST.

Anyway, back to Ludum Dare 29. For this attempt the tools I shall be using are:

IDE: Eclipse

Language: Java

Libraries: LWJGL & Slick2D. Yes, I’ll get around to using LibGDX at some point, gimme a break.

Graphics: Paint.NET

Sound: SFXR & Audacity

Other: OBS to stream.

I plan to stream for most of the event on my twitch channel. Ill also be posting a couple of updates on here aswell during the event.

I’m in!

I’ve been able to take part of all compos since my first one (LD#22), and I won’t make this my first miss! That said, my tools won’t be changing all that much…

  • Language+Frameword: as3+Flixel
  • GFX: GIMP
  • SFX: sfxr
  • Music: VMML (new)
  • Level editor: My own level editor (link)
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse

I’ve also got a new battle station, so I won’t have problems running many programs at once. I still have to get a new webcam, though, since I had been using the notebook’s one… I’m also thinking about posting a Flixel plugin I’ve written for recording a few frames from the screen to a data file and a C program I wrote to read that and write bitmaps. This is great to get footage from within the game! (I could simply record, but I didn’t find one tool to my liking…)

Last time I focused on creating a fun and good looking game. Now, I want to make something more innovative (that means, no more platformers or shooters) and making a better using of the theme. That said, I refuse to drop the current quality of my games (though I must admit that the playability is tunned for myself =X), so I’ll have to find a way around that… Using a whole day for polishing (and level creation) may be overkill, but it really pays off…

I’ll get back soon with whatever I want to use during the compo. Until then and good luck for everyone!!

Also, don’t forget to HAVE FUN!! :)

I’m in

for my 5th LD!

I’ll be using:

  • Platform: HTML5
  • Language: Dart
  • Libraries: dartemis and whatever is available at pub and could be useful for the theme
  • base code: for setting up my workspace and some utilities for less boilerplate code
  • Graphics: Krita (recently discovered) and/or Inkscape, depending on my needs
  • Sound: Audacity and sfxr

LD October Challenge game ‘Guild of Dungeoneering’ – now on Greenlight

Hi folks!

I started making ‘Guild of Dungeoneering‘ for the 2013 LD October Challenge and decided to keep going until it is a full-on for-sale commercial game. Starting tomorrow I will be a full-time indie, and hope to finish it in the next few months.

I have just submitted it to Steam Greenlight so if you’d like to vote for it there that would be amazing:

Vote early, vote often!

Vote early, vote often!

We have also just finished the trailer for the game which you can check out here:

As a little comparison, here’s what it looked like at the end of October – and how it looks now!

Then: a mix of programmer art & free art

Then: a mix of programmer art & free art

Now: with REAL art!

Now: with REAL art!

Thanks for being a fantastic community, Ludum Dare!

First time, I like it rough — I’m in!

I’m in! For the first time. I’m going to be joining the jam with some friends over at http://www.sonymobile.com/hackathon.

I might split away from the group in case they decide to work on their current title, if so I’m going to choose something between:

Language: Java, C#, C++, Rust, Haskell
Framework: Unity, FlixelGdx, LibGDX, SFML, XNA/OpenGL and write from scratch
Graphics: Krita/Photoshop if I’m on Windows

I hope we get a cool theme! Any tips on how to prepare?

Regards,
Zolomon

Hectate’s in!

Oblig post for the participants.
I plan to use the following software tools:

Stencyl
Inkscape and/or GIMP
Blender3D, possibly (trying out animated 2D characters)

I’ll probably also be using some timelapse software and GifCam as desired.

Cheers!

I am in

Okay, i’ve spent about two hours today and yesterday doing theme slaughter and seeing some of the entries, i want to join.

Ready!

There are so many posts about this but I decided just to write a quick:

  • Language: Java
  • Editor: Eclipse
  • Libraries: Will all be done in java from scratch (canvas, JFrame, etc. using a pixel rendering method)
  • Art: Paint.net
  • Sound: SFXR

Hopefully I will also be able to compete in the warm-up aswell.  I hope this theme is a good one I can work with, I don’t come up with ideas very well…good luck to all!

With the In-ness

Oooh boy… I’m starting to feel a little pumped what with the “IN” posts starting. Is it really less than two weeks away ALREADY?! Its kind of shocking to realize I’ve actually been watching and waiting for this and now, it’s finally getting about that time! I guess that’s what happens when you start trying to do this consistently, huh? As usual, I’ve got some other stuff going on but so long as nothing situates itself in the “wrong” sweet spot you better believe that I will be IN.

It’ll be my third time and this time, I plan to make the 48h deadline. That’s right! Especially since I will be working solo, let’s see if I can pull it off. I feel like I’ve gotten much stronger in game development since my last two entries. 8)

And the tools:

  • Engine/Toolset: Stencyl
  • Graphics: GIMP, possibly with some MSPaint thrown in there
  • Audio: Um… PXTone? Not entirely sure.

I’m hoping to keep things well scoped and bring something AMAZING to the table this time around, more so than I have before. Watch, my fellow LDers, and bring it yourself with me!

Hello all.

First I want to say I am excited about the upcoming competition. I wish I knew about it before, but anyway now I know and that is what matters. I just have a question. Am I allowed to use art from opengameart.org for the actual competion or does it has to be content created by even when the art I did not create is in public domain? Thank you!

For the Jam you are able to use existing public domain art, but for the Compo you are only allowed to use art that you created yourself during the 48 hours.

Im In

Well there’s the post 3rd time round for me

– Java

– IntelliJ

– LibGdx

– Paint.NET, PyxelEdit, Hexels

– FLStudio, LMMS

etc etc etc etc

I’m in!

Engine: Löve2D

Language: Lua

Editor: Vim

Fuel:  The “Crunchtime”;  it’s a can of NoS Citrus mixed with 2 cans of Mountain Dew. Caffeine is one hell of a drug.

In!

This is my 3rd time saying IN, but I’ve never completed a game for LD. I hope this time it wont happen :)

Tools:

Engine:Unity3d with 2dtoolkit

Graphics: GraphicsGale, Paint.NET

Sound:SFXR and any other random music generator

Good luck all!

LD 29… I am IN!

So I am entering LD this time with a partner, Crusable, who has been a part of the last one.

As customary,

Tools
IDE: Eclipse
Image Editor: Gimp 2
Libraries: Personal

We are pretty much going to do this all from scratch, with an engine that we are working on at: https://github.com/Cryosoft/CryoEngine

Anyways I hope to see everyone there, and see what interesting games they make this LD.

Break a leg everyone, or I guess the programming equivalent is forget a semicolon.

My third Ludum Dare!

Hello,

This will be my third ludum dare and I am exited! Participating is always tiring at the end, but the results are always awesome. For my last two participations I did my games with game maker, which is a really cool engine, but the problem for me was the accessibility on windows desktop. I have learned now a feature to export to mac and html5, but the html5 didn’t worked as good as I hoped.

This time I am making an accessibility first approach, complete code designed to run in browsers. My tools:

  • Language: Javascript/HTML5
  • Editor: Sublime? TextMate?
  • Libraries: Phaser
  • Art: Paint.net/Pixen/PyxelEdit
  • Sound: SFXR

I have just tried Phaser and it looks really good.

Have fun and make great games.

Lots of people using phaser this ludumdare! It is nice to hear that, and I will be using phaser too.

Good luck!
14. Apr 2014 · 20:15 UTC
Same here, will be using phaser.

It seems like the popularity of it has grown quite a bit!

I’m in! Have a GIF!

Sorry for the choppiness.

Anyway, I’m in! Gonna use Java and Eclipse as usual, with my custom engine (which I’ve uploaded last time I participated). I’ll also be using GIMP and MSPaint for graphics, and SFXR for sound effects.
See you soon!

I’m in as well

2nd time LD for me. Enjoyed the first time and learned a lot during the compo, so now it’s time to make something more awesome.

Will be using C++ and probably the SFML library. For sound fx I’ll probably record my own, or use sfxr and for graphics I’ll use Paint.NET/Gimp.

Good luck everyone!

Ludum Dare @ Enschede

Are you living in the Netherlands or living close to Enschede ?! (German/Dutch border maybe?) Do you love the idea of working in a creative environment with other game designers? GOOD!

We have a Ludum Dare location on the campus of the University of Twente. We start at midnight at the Educafe. We have places to sleep available for those who live a long way from home. If you intend to come please tell us via the facebook event.

Good luck making games and we hope to see your awesome games!

Greetings: –Random Abductions–

Oh no!

Ludum Dare 29 is coming up soon and I’m so super exited to be taking part.  There has been a big problem that I am currently trying to resolve that has caused a big disturbance it the workflow of me preparing for LD29.

What is this problem I hear you say?  I’m glad you asked, I turned on my Win 8.1 PC and it got stuck in an infinite “Startup Repair” loop.  Great…

What I have now done is installed Ubutnu 14.4 and I am currently getting things ready to start my regular streaming again as soon as I can.

My Ubuntu 14.4 desktop with LD29 wallpaper.

I’m In

2nd Ludum Dare. Last time i used a different account :p

I’ll be using unity with the playmaker plugin and i’ll be using blender for models. might use some sound effects programs like SFXR.

Are you ready for Gamepocalypse?

I´m in Ludum Dare

Code for your life! Or else bad reviews or worse: NO reviews!

In other words: I’m in.

Not sure how much time I’ll have but I’m definitely going to make a game. Almost certain, pretty sure I can finish in time (which will probably be three days).

Tools:
Code: Flashdevelop/Flash or Libgdx/Eclipse
Graphics: Flash, Mypaint or some pixel graphics tool (probably not Excel)
Sound/Music: Microphone, Walk Band, C64 Organ, Guitar, Zoom G3X, AmbiLoop, VSTHost

so pretty undecided toolwise.

Unfortunately I probably wont have much time for voting the first week after the compo,  so my game will have poor visibility. Oh well..

My very first Ludum Dare! :)

Hi there!

It seems to be what a lot of people do, write here what programmes they are going to use, so here I go.
I’m an unexperienced game-developer, I’ve learned some Java and Gml (gamemaker language), I’m going to use gamemaker, it’s the language/engine/programme I’ve got  the most experience in and it’ll probarly be the fastest way for me to work! :). I’m really pumped to do this, hoping it’ll improve my skills in general and make better games too :).

Btw! I’d love some tips on working in short time and just game development in general! :)

What I’ll use:

  • Language/Game-Engine: Gamemaker studio.
  • “Art”(I’m crap at it :3): Gimp and/or Paint.net and a little bit of gamemaker’s sprite editor.
  • Sound: SFXR.
  • Music (If I get the time): FL-studio.

Good luck to all! Mainly the other first-timers! :)

Have a good scope and avoid feature creep. Of course, part of the fun is the spontaneity of the whole shebang, but you still have only 48 hours. In short, try to keep it reasonable; if you start small and make good time, then you have a bit more breathing room to branch out a bit.

Am I in? I am!

I’m 98% sure I’ll be doing something for LD29, Yey!

I’ll either be entering the competition or the jam depending on whether my friend helps me with design and levels and stuff like that.
I may only be able to spend smaller amounts of time on my game this LD as I need to revise for exams!

Is anyone using Unreal Engine 4 by the way? Now that the entire source is out there at a relatively cheap price? I was considering it but I don’t know the engine half as well as I should to do a game in ~48 hours :S

Here are the tools I will most likely be using:
- Language: Java/html5/javascript/C  <-  who knows really :P
- IDE: Eclipse/sublime text 2.
- Libraries: lwjgl/webgl if I really need hardware acceleration, if not I’ll just write everything in software.
- Art: Photoshop and Paint.NET.
- Sound/music: Sfxr, FL Studio/Ableton Live 9 Intro, my microphone.

I think that’s it?

I kinda hope the theme allows me to use voxels in some way. I’ve been doing some software rendering stuff in Java with voxels (think voxatron) and I can actually get it to run pretty fast. It’s fun!

HAVE FUN EVERYONE WOOT

First #LD

My name is Luis Felipe Ocampo. This will be my first #LD. Anyone in Brussels reading this; would be cool to chat/meet up. Don’t know many gamedevs here :p

Tools:

  • Framework: Phaser
  • Artwork: Photoshop

Pipeline:

  1. Pen & paper: 1hrs
  2. Game mockup (art) : 2hrs
  3. Quick prototype (code with tmp art): 2hrs
  4. Revisit mockup (add stuff, new ideas, animation?): 2hr
  5. Code like an animal: I have no idea how long this will take
  6. Squeeze some time for audio: 1hr

… and hopefully I’ll make it.

Can’t wait to see everyone’s creations!

We’re in!

This will be our forth Ludum Dare together with the artist, but this LD is going to be kind of special, because the whole ColonierGames development team will work.
First of all, we have our 3d artist, who used to do 2d art, but it turned out he can’t draw, so he’s going to make models. Then, there’s our texturer, who’s going to do some pixel art. Lastly there’ll be me and the other programmer(the web developer), we are going to make the programming parts, and we’re doing a fancy webpage for the submission.
My tools and languages(programmer, i don’t know what artists use):

Language: JAVA
IDE: Eclipse (newest version i guess)
Libraries: LWJGL and my own engine kind-of code I’ll be uploading next week
For music: Fl Studio OR Audacity if I do some recorded music
For some graphics art I do like wallpapers: Photoshop CS5

Language: PHP/HTML
IDE: Notepad++
Libraries: JQuery i guess
For graphics and art on website: Photoshop CS5

I’d like to wish good luck for everyone participating in LD 29!

Last thing, here’s a wallpaper I made for the dev team.

CGBackground1_1920x1080

I’m IN!

Hello everyone, i am going to participate in LD29. This is going to be my second time. Good luck to everyone!

I will use Java with LWJGL (Slick2d maybe) again. Right now i am trying to improve my art skills, and i am doing it very well!

Hi! We are team Shibui and we will be entering the Jam! :3

We are a two-man team.

Team:

  • MrMow – Programming, music, animation.
  • Nylonica – Programming, music, art (sprites, tiles)

Software and language:

  • We will be using Java and Eclipse (Not netbeans)
  • Slick2D will be used.
  • Logic Pro X for music, maybe famitracker.
  • Photoshop CS6 for sprites, tiles etc.
  • Tiled (Hopefully)

Super excited for this LD. Woot woot diddley doo ^_^

I’m kinda in

After only have a very small time block for last ludum dare I was really hoping I’d have the full 48 hours this time.

Alas it is not to be. I have this time this weekend so I’ll probably make a warm up game.

I’ll try and make something small anyway.

If the time isn’t non-existent this is the plan:

  • focus on one easy to implement mechanic
  • make that fun
  • bake for 2 – 3 hours on a medium heat
  • if still fun decorate with art, music and sounds
  • serve

Good luck y’all!

Just a quick question…

Hey guys. I’ve been reading MANY blog posts, and I’ve realized that some people are calling the upcomming event Ludum Dare 29, whereas others are calling it Ludum Dare 48? Is there reasoning behind this? It 48 including the MiniLD’s? Y ME NO UNDERSTAND!?!??!

I think the people who say “LD48” are referring to the fact that it lasts 48 hours…
14. Apr 2014 · 23:06 UTC
LD48 is the shorthand for the competition “Ludum Dare 48”

(because you have 48 hours)

I am in.

Second LD and I am pumped. Last time I competed with my friend in the jam. This time it’ll be on my own for the compo.

Here are the tools I will most likely be using to create the game:
Language: Java/html5/javascript/c++: have not decided yet

– Editor: Eclipse/sublime text.

– Libraries: If I use C++, I will be using this engine I created using SFML https://github.com/Ludusamo/SFML-CodeBase

– Art: GIMP and Aseprite

– Sound and music: Sfxr, Bfxr, Wolfram Tones, Pixitracker

LETS GO!

#LD48 I’m PUMPED!

Lets get going. Practising fo days!

Gamemaker, Paint.NET,Flash CS6,Music Maker,and knowledge!

Givin my best! 😀

#LD48

Warmup My First Unity Android Game

I tried making a Flappy Bird Clone. Let me know what you think. Its for Android. (Unity, Blender, GIMP, sfxr). My Highest Score is 21

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scriptblocks.freerunner

I used Blender to make the animation and rendered it as orthognal then used a GIMP plugin to turn individual screen renders into a sprite sheet.

This tutorial helped a lot http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/modules/beginner/live-training-archive/infinite-runner.

I used the admob plug which went in really easily.

I still am a bit confused on picking resolution of the camera to stretch based on size of screen.

I am also confused on how to add images to google play store. seems to show the same one over and over.

The file size is 8 megs most of all just the standard unity libs , it seems a bit big for mobile but you get a lot of features for that size

I was most impressed with Unity sprite editor and animator

Thanks for trying it out. Good luck to everyone.
