LD29 April 25–28, 2014

I am in

This will be my third LD, and this time probably in 3D. I am going to use:

– C++/Gameplay3D, Xcode, Visual Studio

– Blender, Photoshop

– My homemade microcontroller synth + MIDI keyboard with GarageBand, Bfxr, and maybe electric guitar

– Wacom tablet

Double Dusk done

Spent too much time to polish the graphics effects. Wrote just few paragraphs. Construct 2 has some great virtues (it’s simple to use, it has some nice easy-too-use WebGL effects) but it can be tricky: the WebGL effects can be buggy (it works fine on the layers, not everytime on the sprites themselves, and it may not works with Safari), the way the events/actions work is not obvious sometimes.

Anyway, I manage to do a simple text adventure engine, with a nice title screen, but that’s all, it’s barely a game^^ It’s time to start something else!

Game Engine!

Hello im almost sure that ill be joining ld this time. I will use my game engine that ive been developing for a while. I want everyone to be able to use it so im sharing it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hs8ses6eqj9xluf/LostEngine_0_7_1b.jar this is the development build and it might be a bit buggy with some of the newest features, but the engine should work perfect for everyone. For help/questions or requests contact me at: flash13records@gmail.com or skype: v7_flash.

If you use the engine there is just one need, the engine have a 3 second splash screen in the beginning where it says Powerd By Lost Engine, this can be disabled in code when developing but it must be included in the released game!
Hope that you enjoy the engine!

LD #29

Hello, fellow game folk!

I’m going to have a go at this – my last attempt at Ludum Dare ended in vomiting, so here’s hoping this weekend goes a little better.

I will be using:

FlashDevelop to write Haxe code using the HaxeFlixel framework because it’s really easy and nice and everything just works

Paint.NET to draw some sick art

Brackets for other code editing like JSON files, because the interface looks so damn good

SourceTree to manage builds and push to GitHub

Tiled Editor if I need to build levels which I will because my procedural generation ability is severely lacking

Some other tools to do music and sound, probably bfxr or similar, but I’m not sure yet, which is troubling.

Tweetdeck and Facebook to make sure my productivity is zero throughout.

My personal code / libraries / whatever are available at https://github.com/xxnxT/LD48 – I’m going to pre-emptively add some more .hx files as the week goes on for basic stuff like Character loading, Tilemap loading, and Dialogue boxes. Feel free to do with these as you wish. A large amount of the code is similar t[o the HaxeFlixel demos, which I believe are MIT-licensed and available here.

I’m initially just going to target Flash, because it’s easy and I’m lazy. My main goal is to make something polished, and maybe a little pretty. I’m a shitty programmer though, so that might be asking too much.

Going to be doing the whole 48 hours on a three-year-old Toshiba business notebook which is sans hinges and is made of disintegrating plastic. It’s going to be amazing.

Follow my cries of anguish and frustration throughout the 48 hours here, on Twitter.

Count me in

Hi everyone,

I will be entering the Ludum Dare 29 compo.

I will code in AS3 with Flash Develop using Starling.

I may use pyxel edit, BMFont and photoshop for the graphics and Cubase with the peach VSTi to make music and sound effect (possibly completed with Bfxr).

I wish a good Ludum Dare to you all and sorry if my english is a bit clumsy, I’m french…

See ya !

Count me in

Its my first LD48

Language: Java with libgdx library

I am planning on using GIMP for graphics and I might use tiled depending on the theme.

For sound I plan to use sunvox and sfxr.

Looking forward to the challenge.

LD29 : I am in

Missed out on LD28 because of work, but I should be able to participate for LD29. Yay~!

I think I will use the same tools as before, that is :

  • sfxr for sounds
  • Aria Maestosa for the music
  • mspaint.exe / Paint.NET / The GIMP for graphics
  • Tiled for designing levels (if needed)
  • lidGD

Wait a minute. No Java this time. Instead, I will use JavaScript with the help of the Phaser game engine. Last time, I failed at signing my .jar so I could not show my game inside a webpage : that was a huge mistake, which I intend to correct with this Ludum Dare.

I wish you all a good Ludum Dare 29 (and may the best theme win :p) !

Hello from germany!

Hoi ladies!

I`m very excited about LD #29 because it will be my first LD at all and bla bla bla. Okay to be honest, only perhaps because it conflicts with my schooltime. In german time, it would start at 3 O’clock in the morning (Saturday) and end on Monday. So I have three options:

1: Joining the LD Jam and make my spain presentation besides. This really depends on the winning theme and the complexity. If I choose this option, Game Maker Studio will be my weapon of choice mainly because it does all the annoying stuff for me like creating classes, ticks synchronisation and so on.

2: Workin on my sprite generator parallel to the LD just to get into the feeling of doing something more ore less usefull, maybe I can even stream this. It’s nothing big but will eventually help some people for their temporary art (or maybe, their final?) for future LDs. It’s written complete in PHP and all sprites generated with it are completely free to use, maybe even for commercial use. For now I only have some fruits/vegetables and potions generation, but let’s see what the future brings. Some freaky examples (32*32):

fvsprite1 fvsprite2 fvsprite3

3: Doing nothing and sleep 48 hours straight to find my inner self. I’m so funny. Haha… no.

So all in all I hope I will create something which doesn’t get lost in the eternal void of the windows recycler.

See ya maybe in some days! :)

Voxelin

So I’m working on a Voxel-editor that outputs both to it’s own unique format and to .OBJ files. Intended to be used both to edit low res voxel art (think 3D sprite art) and to used to edit tile-based environments; in other words as a level editor. I’m intending to use it in compo; but it’s just a beta at this point (1) and (2) I don’t intend to share the source of the whole thing, as I do intend to SELL IT when it gets to full versioning. As such, I won’t be using the level editor version (as that would need to be included in source to be used in the game); but I will be using it as a 3D art editor. For fairness’s sake; I’m going to offer the same beta to everyone with the only condition being that it’s an early non-commercial version and all art made with it must be shared alike, with me and the editor cited as a contributor to the project (in credits, etc.) Is anyone here interested in using it? [As I am currently working on it; I don’t know exactly what quality it’ll be in before the beginning of the compo and anyone that responds requesting access will get a copy emailed to them a few hours before the beginning.] I will also post a compiled version that doesn’t save for anyone to explore what the tool is before the start. Thanks.

Also, moderators, tell me if I’m in the clear to do this?

Sounds awesome; i’d love to try it out when it’s ready.

What do you reckon the price range would be as I’d be willing to pay for a program like that.

Good luck!

Ready for year #2

Hello fellow LD participants!

This will be my second year participating in the compo. Last year, the code I came up with helped me land a job, so I’m very supportive of the event. :)

My tools and libraries this year:

AngularJS for architecture

SylvesterJS for simplifying my vector math

JQuery for stuff. That’s it.

Good luck, everyone!

The roads are not safe

Finally, after 2 missed Ludums, me and Duran (the creators of Obamapology and DIGQUEST) are back in the fray.

We’ll be using

  • Multimedia Fusion 2.5 (Clickteam)
  • Paint.NET (Rick Brewster)
  • Windows 7/8 (Microsoft)

This’ll be fun!

I’m in!

I will be participating to this ludum dare unless it clashs too much with school.

Anyway, I hope the theme will be easier than last time and here are my weapons of choice:

Good luck everybody!

Question on which creation tools are allowed.

Thinking of entering the jam and was wondering what tools would be allowed in which section

Makehuman

Gimp/Paint.net

Blender

NeoTextureedit

Unity/Mechanim

Unity standard texture assets

Unity Basic Water asset

Unity Standard Skyboxes

Just wondering which of these tools would procluded in the Comp or Jam

Any tool is allowed in the compo, but canned content is not. Content generators are explicitly allowed in the compo, so makehuman and NeoTextureedit are ok. Gimp, Blender, etc, are tools. I’ve not used Mecanim yet, but reading the blurb it’s an animation tool that also has canned animations. The tool is OK, but for the compo the canned animations would be against the rules. The standard textures, water, and skyboxes are also content that should be off limits for the compo. Pretty much any content in the unity asset store would be off limits for the compo. Canned code seems allowable by the libraries clause so long as it doesn’t implement a specific game, though you probably want to declare what libraries (script assets) you’ve used.

I can’t see any of these being excluded from neither the jam nor the comp.

Thank you. Since I’m solo and cannot do without the Assets count me in for the Jam.

I’m in – My Own Challenges

Hey everyone,

I already did my “I’m in” post, but I thought I would tell you guys about some challenges I am setting my self for my second LD. After a relatively successful first ever gamejam for the last LD, some things I am determined to put into my game for this jam are:

Sounds – Even if it’s just basic SFX, that will do. They have always been something I have avoided because I feel if they aren’t perfect they are just weird. So I am going to try my hardest on getting some good sounds in, probably using sfxr unless anyone has any good suggestions for a free good Windows knock off of GarageBand? 😀

Story/Character Dialog – This is something I have wanted to tackle in a game for ages, but most of my games so far have been relatively “arcade” with no real story or character devlopment or anything like that. So yeah, I would love to code up some really versatile dialog boxes and right myself up a story!

Beat my last game – Not a feature as such, but my major goal is to beat my other game with this one. I know that worrying about where you come in the rankings isn’t really in the spirit of the ludum dare, but I really want to know that I have improved since the last one. I think sound and story could help with that, if I get them right. 😛

Put more time into it than last time – Again, not a feature, but for the last jam, I slept a lot (8 hour nights) and was very distracted (Facebook). This could be because I was relatively on track the entire jam as far as time goes, but I could of used that wasted time for fine tuning and polishing.

ANYWAY, sorry for the long speel. It’s 2:30 AM here in Australia, and I can’t sleep because I am so excited thinking about the jam, and it’s still days away! Haha. Regardless of how I go, good luck to everyone else, and I hope you go well and above all of your expectations. 😀

Good luck!

IN (enough time to learn a new language ?)

im contemplating learning a new language for this ludum..  everytime i have used java

but i realize i spend so much of my time just getting to the point where there i can just draw

something to the screen/input etc.. i start from scratch everytime and dont seem to be coding

in between ludums so i forgot alot of it by the time the next one comes around ;p

i was just wondering if any one had any suggestions to quickly try and learn another language with

possibly a framework in place to get up and running quite quickly as this time i would like the put

more into the gfx/sfx and actually gameplay instead of building everything from the ground up..

plus im kind of sick of fighting with java to get it working online with ppl having to update/accept

security things etc..

cheers

howie :)

Hello !

For every ludumdare, I used Python with Pygame. But this time I decided to change and discover something different, and I choose to try Haxe.

I think you can learn it really quickly, because for me, it’s similar to Java (but it’s less annoying, I have to admit, I don’t really like Java :p)

There is multiple game framework for Haxe, I choosed HaxeFlixel, but there is also HaxePunk and Flambe (or OpenFL if you just want a basical library).

The big inconvenient is the lack of documentation.

That’s a tricky one. It all has to do with frameworks.

I like Java, but I haven’t found a good framework yet. libgdx sounds good.

Keep in mind language != platform. Only you know yourself well enough to know if there’s enough time to learn a new language/platform before LD starts.

thanks Sporidios.. a few have mentioned libdgx ..i think i mite have a look at that.. could be just want im looking for actually.. i still like the lowlevelness and java is fine really as long as it takes abit of the pain away ;p ..ive tried gamemaker years ago.. its abit too UI for me.. im really surpirsed at myself for not being fluent with unity yet.. tried it a few times and just never clicked with it.. i thought i would go mental for something like that ;p

As for the tools I will be using …

This weekend only comes 3 times a year and I’m ready to go … or I will be … as soon as I get everything together.  It has been a couple of months since I have done much in the way of game development, and I’m excited to return to it.

Tools/Software:

We are in!

Hi there!

This will be the third Ludum Dare (after 27 in August 2013 and 28 in Dec 2013) for @Thunraz and @Laguna_999. We are looking forward to make a nice game. As we are working in a team, we will be taking part in the Jam, but probably have to finish til Sunday evening in Europe since we have to work on monday.

Tools of the trade:

C# and SFML .NET are working out fine as a Backend. We also have a small project template and some helper functions prepared so we can start quickly.

For graphics aseprite and for SoundFX SFXR as well as Cubase 5.0 (forgot to update on my laptop) for the Background Music.

I will also be doing a Timelapse Video.

So See you next Weekend!

frogger (demake)

doh.. just realized i didnt upload my frogger demake

here is it if you want to try it.. i wont hold it against you if you don’t ;p

frogger

a friend tried it and he was getting java security issues and couldnt play it but it

works fine for me.. see this is why java is starting to do my head in and im looking to

start learning something else.. its probably just me being daft but it seems every

ludum i come across another problem i have to get around with java..

anyhoot here it is

The Java Security issues might have just been your friends web browser asking permission to run the applet. If it’s not working your friend might have disabled all Java applets from running.

thats what i was thinking but he claims its all up to date and fine.. i ALWAYS have trouble getting the applet working for everyone for some reason.. i get there in the end but its always a mad rush heh.. im getting to the point where i would like people not to have to download/update/change anything to play my game.. like possibly html5 or something.. ive just been looking into monkey-x .. i know nothing about it so far but mite try and quickly learn that before the weekend :)

Screw it i’m in!

Taking part yet again… this time using unity!
