Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Progress update

This is my first solo LD, first time making a tower defence game, and first time using Paper2D in UE4, so it's taken me a while but I've finally got most of the gameplay working. Tomorrow I'll see what I can do with the art. LD52emD2/em01B.jpgLD52emD2/em02B.jpg

Progress Update Day 1 (and a bit)

Hey all, We from Bonk Inc wanted to show you our progress into YAHG!

As you can see here, the art looks quite nice so far. Loving the barn ^^ fence.JPG

We also have one of our characters here, doesn't it look just... cute? yeah idk. Foot Lettuce sprite v2.png

We are busy creating everything needed for the player and all the other fun characters, designing the map also seems like a lot of work!

Guess The Game

Earlier this jam we started a little game, can you guess the goal of our game in this tread and you might get your name featured in the game ^^

Mechanics Done

Done with the mechanics and now will be moving to some levels and visual stuff.

Pivoting with 18 hours left.

My original idea was terrible, not fun, overscoped, etc etc So I've decided to pivot and thus far I am feeling a lot better about this idea. It's essentially going to be a shameless ripoff of Reign/Sort the court (Also an LD game!)/Bitlife Here's how it's looking: day2snap.jpg

Current state of the building system - good enough to move on for now!

Hello folks! I've spent a few hours refining the building system. You are shown a preview of what you are about to build. Buildable areas turn white, areas you can build on turn green and areas you cannot turn red. The building preview now follows the cursor and snaps to a cell, where as previously you had to click to make it move. You can enter exit build mode with the Escape key or by Right Click.

Version 0.0.3 of the game complete. Time to move onto 0.0.4 and my Audio SystemNew Building.gif

Gameplay is lacking

I'm feelin good about my game but it feels like that the gameplay is lacking a bit, I'm just going for the jam so I still have a day to figure out a way to spice this up. Time is of the essence!

Combat part 2: dodging, enemy attacks, and health

Definitely falling behind my schedule, so I'm glad I'm working with a team for this LD to help cover level design, art, and audio. The extra day over the Compo schedule helps, too :D

Rhythm Reaper Combat 2

Space Harvest!

The game "Space Harvest" takes place with our land having soldiers abducted by aliens. You must harvest as many humans as you can in this arcade! I challenged myself to learn Unreal Engine 5 from scratch. I feel good about taking on this arduous task... but the game is coming out slowly... if I get even an arcade model I'll be very happy:smile:!The idea is to abeduce... this is the harvest...

2023-01-08_00-00-12.gif

Hyper Harvest

I didn't settle into this idea until noon. At any rate, I like where this is going.

hyperharvest_0.gif

2 Jams 2 much stress!

Had to scrap a shuriken projectile and now making tiles that buff.

also this game is a shootemup where you build your raft by harvesting tiles so you can go farther

(Im doing this with Mini Jam)

Modelling done

16 hours left... just modelling done.... but i think i can make something cool by the end...

all i have is 2 vases with grass and a table for them

Help regarding voting

This is my first ludum dare. Are we only able to vote after the submission period ends?

Yamsylvania, coming tomorrow!

yamsylvaniasplash.png Can't wait to play everyone's games. Hope everyone is having a successful and productive jam, best of luck!

Truck go brrrrrr

Gotta ship out your crops :sunglasses: truck.gif

Gameplay Finished

The gameplay is finished, which I wanted done by the end of today (very cool.) Lots of presentation related stuff left to do. Graphics, sounds, hud etc. It's gonna be good!

Screenshotem2023-01-07/em22-17-25.png

0.0.6 - Audio System & Basic Camera Rig complete - Now it's time for bed

Hello folks! We finished the day by creating a cool Audio Manager that can modify sound clips at runtime (pitch, playback speed etc.), and also created a basic Camera Rig that is missing the ability to zoom in and out. I'll add that tomorrow.

It's been a great long day of development. When I hit 0.1.0 all of the core parts of the game will be there. I will spend a little bit of time cleaning some things up tomorrow, but then it's on to content and UI!

Sorry the GIF couldn't handle the movement so it goes blurry! ezgif-5-afbe131099.gif

For now it's time for bed! Goodnight!

HELPPlease (Resolved)

EDIT: I fixed it, for some reason the dictionary tying the tile to the collider only worked in the editor but I re-wrote the script to not use a dictionary which ended up being a lot more efficient.

I've been fighting with this problem for an hour and a half now.

In our game (Unity 2022) you cut the wheat with the green square (will get art later). The hay are ruletiles that spawn in GameObjects with colliders to check if the green square is hitting them. In the editor it cuts clean through the hay. (image) Screenshotem20230107/em104131.png

Now I made a build, and it inexplicably only cuts through every other block of hay (like the colliders aren't there. (image) Screenshotem20230107/em103907.png

Does anyone know why this could be happening. Any help is welcome its taking so long...

Hope things are going well

Well, my friend and I hated the theme, so instead we decided to get off our asses and finally start working on a project that we've had planned for a while.

I still will probably play some of the games if they look particularly cool.

a few QOL reminders: - add a quit button, it takes maybe one minute, even if it is just press ESC to quit - if you are using Unreal, go into settings and uncheck VR, unless of course you are making a VR game

that's about it. If you are making a VR game, I wanna play it (or if your game has nothing to do with farming). I'll repost this minus the QOL on like Monday so you can paste your games in the comments (preferably if they are at least one of those two things).

Slim Pickings is Looking Good

slimgameplay.gif

Our game "Slim Pickings" is in a good spot for the end of Saturday! It's a game about dodging enemies underground and harvesting gems, because everyone knows that slimes eat gemstones.

All the characters have at least a bit of art; now it's on to some more animation frames for them. After that, there are a million places to polish up and tune.

End of the second day

Space Harvester has made a lots of progress. It is now feature complete. Only needed bugfixes. Capture d’écranem2023-01-08/em00-29-51.pngCapture d’écranem2023-01-07/em21-06-31.png

Now going to sleep to be in good shape for the final stretch

The flames, they call to me!

Brain fog cost me a solid hour figuring out why they just would not spread. Signals require a listener. Go figure.

RootWinShot.20230107.212731.png

Got some animation done!

Vincent, our artist, made some darn cute pixel characters! characters.png I took those and started making some animations: player.gif carrot.gif tomato.gif That space guy looks a bit cheap compared to the others... We'll see if there is time to do better (probably not).

I'll try to get some sleep, although that carrot may haunt my nightmares...

It's not even programmer art but we have progress

Screenshotem20230108/em011124.png The engine is working again after spending half the day fixing things I broke adding moving cameras last night. We now have cameras, input, collisions, particles, sound effects, and music all working... not that the assets are all made yet but I'm the programmer so Ill cross that bridge once we have a working game. UI needs a few finishing touches and we need some game logic but the engine is functional and the base entities are in place. I think it is time to call it a night so this is the half way point. Oh, I almost forgot to mention our concept art is looking pretty good. Maybe I'll post some tomorrow.

Welcome to the City?

ldjam3.png The scenery in our game is finally rounding into shape! In this anachronistic city, our hero kills innocent people.

Some hero.

Tired

The last time I looked at the clock it was 23:30.. I honestly have no idea where the time went but figure I should turn in for the night. Good news is I'm really liking my idea at this point and things are progressing decently well. 3blog.jpg

Ok, I'm officially done

I can't come with something as simple as an object bouncing on walls. I'm dead this time.

Woo day 2!

Day two completed, we would be happy if we stopped right now and released what we have. Which is a very good feeling. We've been working together well as a team and are having lots of fun with this project. I'm not much of an artist but I took the lead on our art and I'm actually really happy with what I've managed to make. I'm the most impressed with my water texture, check it out! Screenshot 2023-01-08 173640.jpg

Internet Outage

Welp that's one way to end my first compo... Internet out for the rest of the night at least. Heavy rain and wind, so hopefully power won't also go out.

Wish me luck coding without documentation or Google 😵‍💫

UPDATE: internet is back! yay!

Game mechanics in place. Action cursors, detecting in range, harvestable nodes.

Good progress in my N64-like Nature Harvest-Collect-a-thon game. What is finished:

  • Cursor changes depending on available action, including detecting In Range and Out of Range for a more pleasing UX
  • Single and multi-harvestable nodes
  • Harvest progress bar
  • Inventory
  • Skill and profession system

Animation.gif

About the game

  • N64-inspired visuals
  • Gameplay: pick up natural resources and photograph different textures you find in Nature
  • Picking up resources is inspired by WoW’s Herbalism and Mining professions.

TODO (In order of Priority)

  • Create all nodes and resources (plants, ores, etc)
  • Create the map/levels and distribute the resource progression
  • UI (it will certainly be very barebones)
  • Sounds
  • Music
  • Post processing and effects

Bad code quality

Infinite inventory and as a singleton! It's a game jam, who cares about anti-patterns!

~75% mark progress report!

gameplay.2023-01-08 01em16/em08.gif

We're in the final stretch, everyone! I'm feeling good. Gameplay is working, art is done, the title screen is in! I still need to add the loss condition and results UI. I'm also hoping to have some time to add sound effects. The 12:00 PM deadline basically means I need to submit before going to bed, or at least be just a few clicks away from submission. We'll see how I hold up! Good luck to us all 🤘

This is going better that expected!

My space gardening theme card game is going better than what I would have imagined at start! Still a lot of content to add, a "How to play" screen to make, sparkle the thing with juice...

How is it going for you guys?

10 hours to go. Time for sleep

Game is in a playable state. Some extra polishing after sleep.

Minigames and Cutscenes

sunday-2am.gif

Somehow this is all part of the same game we were making yesterday...

Well controlls feels nice for noww

Kinda finished the character controller today but managed to finish the basics of qta system as well. Still needs a lot of juice but looks pretty nice so far. This is the first time I'm participating in a game jam alone, so being able to switch from coding to art time to time is definitely fun movie_001.gif

and the clock ticks down

gonna try and maybe get some bird animations + a tutorial screen done before the end, but progress is being made

Monkey Business

Trying to learn how to use Live2D Cubism this jam. It's been rough (and fun!)

Graphics update

hyperharvest_1.gif

After some deliberation, decided to "drop" the island/field metaphor and go for a more classical puzzle representation. The farms were cute, but a bit noisy and hard to parse. Time to get some sleep.

Trick shots

Makes me happy. There is no reward for it though.

Main Idea

Our cat (Jay) fulfills his childhood dream and opens a bedroom. The opening turned out to be too expensive, which is why he ran out of money to promote the coffee shop, he urgently needed to do something about it, since there were very few visitors.

One evening he decides to take money from a local cartel. Having taken a large amount, he does not have time to give all the money by the time. The cartel meets with Jay and threatens to kill him, scaring him, they decide to use Jay's coffee shop for their own purposes until he works out all the money.

The deal was to secretly sell catnip, which our cat would grow in the back room. Customers will be attracted to the coffee shop for illegal goods.

At the end of each day, the profits are divided between Jay and the cartel. If Jay does not cope with the set bar, then the cartel kills him and they will put their own person in his place.

обложка.png

Main Character

Our main character is a cat. His story can be shifted to real life, when a person despairs and turns to illegal ways of earning money from misunderstanding, which leads to sad consequences.

Don't be like our cat and experience his experience for yourself and don't repeat Jay's mistakes!начало катсцена 2.png

UI taking shape

Looks a bit better now, though I still got a fair bit of tinkering to do. Code is pretty much feature-complete, but we still need better sprites and some music.

And a name. Plant School just doesn't work for me... Gotta have a think about that one. But for now, another coffee! Screenshot 2023-01-08 110044.png

Buyers

The customers of the coffee shop are cats beaten on their heads, who are not doing well in life eitherрыжий кот.png

Our biggest brainstorm

Hey all, Bonk Inc here again!

I have to admit, this jam actually went quite fast with designing a concept that would work (even though we definitely over scoped waaaay to much for the time that our dev team has buuuut don't tell anyone that!)

As you can see in our drawings here, we pretty quickly came up with some idea's and yes the smileys are some of the better ideas that we had, you got that right :) biggestBrainstorm.png

I don't wanna show off too much as everyone can still guess what our game will be about in this thread!

Good luck with the jam everyone!

Moving static objects? (love2d)

So I have this little thing which is composed of three objects, which are in turn composed of one body, one shape, and one fixture each Screenshot from 2023-01-08 12-20-05.png

But sometimes when I resize the window parts of it start moving (actually moving with a velocity) for a short period (1-2 seconds) and totally breaks apart

Screenshot from 2023-01-08 12-20-17.png

I have found claims that the physics engine should be paused while resizing. And I cannot find callback or something on resize event to pause manually.

Anyone knows why this happens and how to fix it?

Edit: Im stupid, I had some old debug code that moved that particular object when hitting the arrow keys, and the method I used for resizing was Super + Arrow keys

Main menu!

It's pretty simple, but I quite like how this background works here!

Lullaby Farms

I can't believe it, I made a musical game!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/lullaby-farms

Screenshot from 2023-01-08 20-25-43.png

I just published my 13th game on LD, from my 15th time participating. Every time I join the dare, I make something new and different, but this one takes the cake.

Play a piano (8 bit) on your keyboard

keyboard.png

Why I've decided quit my entry for LD52

I've decided to quit my entry for LD52. It's not a problem with the theme or anything, I just don't feel like I would benefit from participating.

My first (and currently only) Ludum Dare was LD51. It was a chance to practice my game dev skills, test ideas, and get some feedback.

I don't feel like LD52 is having the same effect. Since last time, I've made a lot of progress on my main (commercial) game, and have a much clearer idea on what the finished product will look like. Therefore, I have no need to "experiment" or "practice" when I already have the necessary ideas and skills. Anything I create would just be an inferior version of part of my main game with the theme tacked on.

That's not to say I won't take part in more Ludum Dares in the future. There will be times when I need to try out ideas or get feedback. Now just isn't the time in my game's development cycle for it.

My idea is that you have to complete a parkour and then harvest a crop.
