Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

The de-twitterfication of Ludum Dare

I'm working a longer blog post since there's so much to talk about, but with Twitter imploding (TL;DR mentioning other social media is now a TOS violation), if you use a Mastodon/ActivityPub compatible social media, you can find us over here:

  • Official LD account: https://jammer.social/@ludumdare
  • RSS feed: https://jammer.social/@ludumdare.rss
  • Me: https://jammer.social/@mike

EDIT: What an insane weekend. Twitter has back-tracked on the new policy, deleted the tweets and knowledge base articles. That said, message received. It's definitely time we became less dependent on them.

Simple yet filled with possibilities

So, I thought long and hard. Scoured my brain and my past seventy years of experience in life and have come up with these two powerful themes:

  1. Arrows
  2. Bounce

As the title suggests, simple, yet filled with endless possibilities.

Oh, and I also have some framework for games that match these themes.

Just sayin'

I would like to create something, but not a game - maybe a compiler, an engine, a graphical template, a proof of concept or something else. Why not?

I'm In. Get jazzed. :D

This will be my 29th ludumdare in a row. xD i started at LD24, and am still here apparently. I’ll be using these this time:

IDE: Eclipse - Eclipse Foundation

Engine: LibGdx - Open Source, originally written by Mario Zechner

Graphics: aseprite/paint.net -david capello/Rick Brewster; Tiled - Thorbjørn Lindeijer; TexturePacker - main guy: Metaphore, also: tommyettinger, devjn, terafog, thefacecore, hangman and voidburn.

Fonts: FontForge - George Williams and the FontForge Project contributors

Sound: Audacity - Dominic Mazzoni and Roger Dannenberg

Music: Cakewalk by BandLab

Timelapse: Chronolapse - keeyai

Good luck fellow Ludumdarians. oh, and Unicorns! As much as I'd like to know I wont struggle and fight my tools and expectations, I will enjoy the ride the entire time. Here's to hoping that the programming power equals the goofy art this time around. :D

I've been bit by the jam bug, apparently.

My first game jam was LD51 a few months ago, and while it was a little rough (right in the middle of my college semester, got sick that weekend), I had a lot of fun! I'm looking forward to LD52, which I know is going to be insane as the submission deadline is 90 minutes before my first class of the new semester. How am I supposed to focus on capstone after that! What if there's a huge bug that I need to fix!

I'm probably working alone again this jam, and I'm gonna use Godot again as well (3.5? 4.0? Haven't decided!) and my main goal is to try and have better art that doesn't unintentionally look like,,,,other things lmao.

Good luck to everyone!

I'm In + Theme Suggestions + Not A W + Ratio + 2 + 2 = 4

the brain banks are running a little dry for suggestions this time around, so subject to change but also meh may as well keep them like this:

Anyway, hi, I'm in, I love Godot, & I'll be working solo. Aiming for compo as always, probably landing somewhere amongst jam, as always. Excited for the triple LD experience in 2023 & whatever methods of theme voting we get to use this time around, I remember something about the slaughter round going away in the future but is the future now? Who knows!

I'm??? In???

Not really sure if I'll have the time to participate this time around but if I do... - Engine: Godot 3.5 - Art: Krita and/or Piskel - Music/Sound: yeah, that's funny

Now that my streak is gone anyway, not too fussed if I end up missing out. I'm always down to see what else everyone else comes up with anyway!

OH BOI

NEXT LUDUM DARE.

Now i can't wait, the last one was so much fun, learned a hella lot and can't wait to do it again!

Hello, world!

:v: So, it's the first game jam in my life (35M).

Please, give me a one-sentence pro tip how to succeed.

WOOOOAH What is this? How come there is a JAM in January? :O

Ok, so I COMPLETELY Randomly opened LD page just to scroll through people's posts and games. And all of the sudden I see that the next Jam is in 16 days!

What happened? I thought it's gonna be in April as usual.

I'm in!

I'm in! My previous game was Labrats in Ludum Dare 43, so I'm extremely rusty.

On LD44 I got sick, and then I had a baby girl after that, so didn't have much spare time for a while. My plan this time is just to try and get something out even if it's bad just to get back in shape :)

Will there be updated rules for ChatGPT and other AI generators for the COMPO?

In a few days the new edition of Ludum Dare will arrive, exactly the 52nd.

With the appearance of new ways of generating code such as ChatGPT or art with Midjourney, Dall-E, etc. Will there be some indications about this in the new edition in the COMPO format?

I just don't know if I can use ChatGPT or other AI generators to focus more on game design. Or, instead, I have to use more creativity.

Thanks to Ludum Dare for this magnificent Game Jam and its organization!

Should we bump LD52 a week? EDIT: No

Happy holidays...is what I want to say 😅

~~~This is embarrassing, but it being our first January event I wasn't aware of Orthodox Christmas (January 7th) when I originally scheduled Ludum Dare 52 for January 6th-9th. I also didn't appreciate how little time myself and others would have over the holidays. :face_palm: ~~~
~~~We don't typically change dates, but we may if a majority think we should. The alternative date will be a week later, January 13th-16th.~~~

~~~Please share your opinion in this poll: https://forms.gle/yyTHh1EB6KLAc1Vs6~~~
Thank you so much, and I wish you the best for the rest of 2022 and ahead into 2023. :wine_glass:
EDIT: Thank you everyone for your feedback! We've decided not to change the schedule date. Ludum Dare 52 will continue to take place on January 6th-9th weekend.
Also FYI: Theme Suggestions will close soon! Be sure to get yours in.
Done
Maybe I am the first one :)
