Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Hello, world!

:v: So, it's the first game jam in my life (35M).

Please, give me a one-sentence pro tip how to succeed.

WOOOOAH What is this? How come there is a JAM in January? :O

Ok, so I COMPLETELY Randomly opened LD page just to scroll through people's posts and games. And all of the sudden I see that the next Jam is in 16 days!

What happened? I thought it's gonna be in April as usual.

I'm in!

I'm in! My previous game was Labrats in Ludum Dare 43, so I'm extremely rusty.

On LD44 I got sick, and then I had a baby girl after that, so didn't have much spare time for a while. My plan this time is just to try and get something out even if it's bad just to get back in shape :)

Will there be updated rules for ChatGPT and other AI generators for the COMPO?

In a few days the new edition of Ludum Dare will arrive, exactly the 52nd.

With the appearance of new ways of generating code such as ChatGPT or art with Midjourney, Dall-E, etc. Will there be some indications about this in the new edition in the COMPO format?

I just don't know if I can use ChatGPT or other AI generators to focus more on game design. Or, instead, I have to use more creativity.

Thanks to Ludum Dare for this magnificent Game Jam and its organization!

Added a boss fight to my game, base on the main enemy from my LDJ51 entry.

Hello! I'm working on a 2d action roguelike game, based on my LDJ51 entry. And the development is going pretty well!

And i finally finished the boss fight, based on the main enemy from my LDJ51 entry. So i felt like making a post about it here, because the boss was the main thing about my LDJ51 entry.

I have a post about it on Reddit, showing the boss fight in a video.

As usual, I was not very inspired, so I'm afraid that my suggestions are not very original

tutorial for making a team

u can add friends by making a post first and then following them from the profile in the comments

When life gives you lemons..

ld starts at the 6th of January, my final exams start at the 9th this is the first ld that I will either have to miss or work in a team ever! heck I've never worked in a team in my 3 years as a game developer lol

I can afford some time to work on a jam game but it's hardly enough to get a good game done and I don't want to stop my streak of 3 ld games in a row.. I hate university lol

I'm in!

Definitely planning to take part. Like my LD games from last year I'm going to keep experimenting with short adventure games because it's what I'm enjoying the most.

My one big problem is last two jams I've struggled with needing a third day and not being able to take the Monday off work. I said both time I'd make sure next LD I'd take Monday off work, but I absolutely cannot take that Monday off. So I'm going to have to think very seriously about the scope of the game since I need to be done in 2 days

Note to Phaser users - images in embedded games don't load

Currently, games made with Phaser engine don't work when embedded in the game page (specifically, images won't load). But - there is a workaround.

What to do

If you build a game using Phaser, go to the phaser.js file (the one huge file that contains the whole engine), look for the following around line 5070: if (typeof URL === 'function') and change it into if (false) If you use the minified version of the engine (phaser.min.js), change instead "function"==typeof URL?t.src=URL.createObjectURL into false?t.src=URL.createObjectURL (this one wasn't tested)

Why it works

The content security policy (CSP) for embedded games contains the directive default-src 'self' data:, which allows game engines to show images using data: URLs, but not the more modern blob: URLs. The default in Phaser is to use blob: URLs, the changes above force it to use the data: fallback.

This took us a few hours to figure during LD51, hope it will help others.

@pov, can you add "blob:" to the CSP? If not, can you add this tip to the game embedding guide? I believe that this is where people will look if they have this problem.

I... may be in. (EDIT: I will)

First of all, I haven't joined LD in a few years, so it should be a return to form for me.

But since LD52 and Global Game Jam 2023 will happen in the same month, I might plan to make a game for LD first, then finish it at GGJ.

The problem is... is leaving the game in a cliffhanger in one game jam and then finishing it in another allowed in the first place?

I humbly await your answers.

EDIT: I asked the question on the official GGJ Discord, and they said yes. So it's all systems go!

Looking for 2D Animator and Musician For My Team

Heeeello, I am looking for someone that wants to join me or that I can join. I need someone for 2D sprites/animation and someone to do music/sounds. I want to be the lead on the project but if no ones I can work without me being the lead.

I can do the coding. I use Unity, C#, and Multimedia Fusion for prototyping. I do family-friendly and 2D games. My programming is above beginner but below intermediate I'd say, but I finish what I start.

I've taken the whole 3 days off work and want to win this jam! If you want to see my style of work check out my last Jam game annnd...

Hope to hear from you soon!

Musician/game dev looking for a team!

I usually work on the jam game alone (feel free to check my games) but this time due to time limits I can't afford to work on a jam game for 3 days, so I thought I would instead work in a team, I can do pretty much anything from coding to art to game design and music etc.. but I would prefer to be a musician/sfx designer as I'm pretty comfortable with that.

checkout some of my work

I'm excited to see what comes out of this as I've never worked in a team before, don't mean to be picky but I prefer to work with people with at least some intermediate knowledge on game making, but it's not necessary though, definitely not as much as having fun in the process!

bonus: if you're using the Godot engine, I can help with minor features and debugging.

Should we bump LD52 a week? EDIT: No

Happy holidays...is what I want to say 😅

~~~This is embarrassing, but it being our first January event I wasn't aware of Orthodox Christmas (January 7th) when I originally scheduled Ludum Dare 52 for January 6th-9th. I also didn't appreciate how little time myself and others would have over the holidays. :face_palm: ~~~
~~~We don't typically change dates, but we may if a majority think we should. The alternative date will be a week later, January 13th-16th.~~~

~~~Please share your opinion in this poll: https://forms.gle/yyTHh1EB6KLAc1Vs6~~~
Thank you so much, and I wish you the best for the rest of 2022 and ahead into 2023. :wine_glass:
EDIT: Thank you everyone for your feedback! We've decided not to change the schedule date. Ludum Dare 52 will continue to take place on January 6th-9th weekend.
Also FYI: Theme Suggestions will close soon! Be sure to get yours in.
