First day, first proper try at a Pico8 game
little bird harvesting twigs and trash for its nest
little bird harvesting twigs and trash for its nest
But I fell in love with my idea so I am sitting here just imagining the possibilities and other functions....and not programming, gosh.
Just got started.

I have a great idea! I have been 'dry coding' for a few hours now. Which in my case means that I could not test any of the code while developing. In the next hour I will be tweaking code to create randomly generated plants
My goal is something like this:

...Than 1-bit pixels

Quick sneak peek of my game. I'm trying to go with a N64 inspired style.

PS: the sky is not green this is an artifact from the GIF compression. But now that I see it, I liked it and may put it into the game.
Game will be about harvesting nature resources, inspired by World of Warcraft's herbalism and mining.
When I travel or walk around I like to take photos... of the ground. But not only that, I photograph all the different textures I see. Sometimes I also like to just take my tripod and randomly take photos of vegetation:

That led me to accumulate a lot of textures and photos I HAVE NEVER USED so far:

These souls aren't going to harvest themselves, you know...
If you replace "harvest" by "pick-up" you have the basis of virtually any mainstream game genre.
Then you just tweak what you pick-up, and tada.
For example a shmup can have growing crop bonuses that evolve over a small time. So you have to harvest them at the right time.
My concept for a game where you play a vest trying to avoid getting washed by disguising as a pirate got 14 likes...
Yesterday when I went to bed I still wasn't feeling it, but I wasn't feeling any other concept either. So I just woke up and I actually have some ideas now to make this concept worth the effort.
I'm going to make a text based adventure game! Yay! So let's get started on the actual game...

This is not sponsored and I'm not the developer of the plugin. I found Fast Script Reload while I was randomly navigating "New Releases Discounts" in the AssetStore in December.
It was only $5 when it launched and I bought immediately. At first I thought it was bs.
It promises to Hot Reload script changes WHILE PLAY MODE IS ACTIVE, it means you can play and edit code on the go (a thing that Godot and UE does naturally, oh well...).
Anyway... I'm using it in the jam and it's really working out.
The bad part is that it still doesn't support adding new fields nor properties and no new public methods. But all the rest work (changing existing methods, changing values of fields and properties, adding local variables, etc)! It's crazy.
Finally put together an idea that might be simple enough. So I'm in.. but we'll see...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv7soHOKMMs
I completed the first working version of my game! You can play it here
Or, if you have pico-8, you can download the game from the image below:

Let me know your high score :-) let me know if the game is too fast, too slow, too easy, too hard, too laggy, whatever!
Now on to make music and polish!

By the way, "harvest" is also my favorite brand of crackers... :-P

I'm excited to be participating in my fourth Ludum Dare, and third Compo! I've had a few false starts today, including missing the start time (I thought It was still 6 PM Pacific, but thankfully only missed 30 minutes!) and losing the first update post I just typed. That said, things are still going pretty well. I locked in my game idea very quickly after about 30 minutes:
It’s harvest season, and the apples are growing quick. Search for ripe apples, chop them down with your boomerang, and collect them in your truck before they hit the ground!
Be careful, though. The normally-peaceful Inches have sensed the feast and started their yearly assault. A few bad apples will spoil the batch, so watch out for falling Inch-infested apples!
I spent most of today working on art, then took a few hours to get a Unity project set up and start on worm brains, seen above. Apologies to Secret of the Oracle, I couldn't help myself ;)

Doing "Hollywood Waterfall" in 48 hours is going to be TOUGH...

I'm also planning a jerrycan-shaped oil meter for our bike once we unlock a motor.

PLAN: - [X] procedural trees - [X] spawn fruits when punching - [ ] collect fruits - [ ] thrown them at other players or trees - [ ] player with most kills at the end of the round wins - [ ] polishing
still no idea figured out

We'll see where this'll go, if anywhere.
Haven't done a great deal on day 1 but there was one thing I had been wanting to do since I got myself one of these for Christmas...

In Unity, you need to build for Linux (which you can do on Windows, macOS, or of course Linux) with Auto Graphics API set to off, having only the Vulkan API in the list. You can get the resulting build on the Steam Deck fairly quickly and easily by using the SteamOS Devkit Client, which you can download on Steam. For best results, test your game in the editor at 1280x800. I haven't looked yet at how to get the more fancier controls working, but the standard controller stuff works as expected. One could always use a controller layout, but it would be fun to have some kind of native support for the trackpads and the gyro at least.
Got a couple of the more basic elements of the game working, including basic character movement and the ability to use tools to transform the ground tiles. The art is still very first pass as well. Looking forward to lots of progress tomorrow.

Toddler Problems!🤣

After lots of debugging I can say with much joy that I am the best programmer of the world! Well... I had LOTS of issues  But somehow, the way these plants generate now is very cool! The base concept is pretty complete already.

There is a nightly build availibe below, so you can play with my weird-ass plants!
https://wouter52.com/PROJECTS/LD52/NIGHTLYBUILDS/NIGHTLY01/
Hey everyone, we are Bonk Inc and we want to play a small game today!
I will show you our main menu and give you a small description of our current team and I'd like for you to guess what our game will be about. Correct guesses might be featured :)
The Bonk Inc Team: We have three developers; two 3D artists, an audio composer with a history of csgo map development and last but not least a voice actor!
This is how you will be greeted when booting up the game:

Any guesses? Feel free to send them our way!
soul? or something form that tree?
I worked on the game design yesterday evening, I'm planning to do a trading game where you speculate on raw food (wheat, sunflower, rice). I made the global design with Inkscape and ui elements with Aseprite.
Now, time to integrate...

This was hard. It's not the theme I've actively hated the most throughout my time here. Not by far. But it's easier to do something with the you only have one button which is an unconventional weapon and 10 seconds themes than to come up with something for this that didn't feel meh. So perhaps next round I'll upvote the ones I hate the most?
We'll just go ahead and pretend like we've learned nothing from the last 20 LD we've participated in and have a way too ambitious plan. But hear me out, it was either that or go for some theme interpretation that didn't feel inspiring and what's the point in doing that?!
And in the vein of doing everything quite not as one should, lets start by updating Unity so we'll have even less time to implement everything.
So it's going be preparation for a harvest feast, monstrous battles to get the ingredients and hopefully a lot of family members lost in the process, but who cares as long as the pancakes get made. And if the little brothers and sisters are gone, doesn't it mean more pancakes for me?
Too late... but guess i found a wonderful game idea
Just a screenshot from my ld game

Need music for your game? I am now giving away MuGen ABSOLUTELY FREE to LDJAM participants!

So go ahead and get your copy NOW!
Spooky, spooky skeletons.

Harvest is a cool theme. I kind of was hoping to make a simple action game I wouldn't be so interested in working on afterwards(got enough stuff to do already) but that clearly won't be the case with the idea I settled on. Also had some trouble deciding what to use with the idea, I think I'll go with Twine.
My one weakness, music, has been done. Got it out of the way early to I don't have to worry about it anymore hehe. If you want to take a listen, even though it prolly sounds like utter c..., I've posted a bit on my Twitter right here -> https://twitter.com/FG_Software/status/1611683024789458946
It's gonna be the boss theme. Also, included is how it looks like in Famitracker
Or it will be! Got almost all the controls in now, tomorrow is going to be a big day of making this look like something.
Cheers, all!

When trying to build I wasn't able to make my start menu load first instead my game loaded first. How could I fix this?
I had previously posted about this being my first game jam and that had some positive reactions, also seeing other people sharing their ideas gave my the confidence to share mine. My game is essentially about getting plants to feed to a giant head with sharp teeth It is very simple and is controlled by the mouse and has one of the worst pick item mechanics I have ever seen but I made it myself and I'm proud.

ok now he's biting me foot

have no idea on gameplay, did anybody have some advice?
artwork are from kenneeey. https://kenney-assets.itch.io/1-bit-pack
Now it's time to code!
sleep schedule & family matters cutting into compo time + would rather take it chill this weekend lmao
My game loop is almost complete, harvesting ennemies and buying upgrades.
I'll take a quick break and spend some time on visuals after that.
I feel good for now, no major issues. Build my own export web template for Godot and looks like it's working so :fingers_crossed: i'll have a web version to share.
Hope you all have fun !

Try to gess what we here for

Hello everyone!
It's been a while since I participated in the Ludum. With my new skills (I used Unity 4 times in two years!) I'm back to make a great game!
The theme of this Ludum inspired me the idea of a UFO coming to collect the most things on Earth. Unfortunately, the army doesn't seem to agree with it.

Did I mention I have to look after a toddler while I do this?! 🧸🪀👧

Basically I am making The Martian: the game.
Manage your resources to grow potatoes.
I'm going all 3D. I'm using Godot and Blender and hopefully I will have enough time for all the models.
There's gonna be some exploration too but will I have the time to? I think I already know the answer…

i'm taking part with TIC-80!

the theme made me think of harvesting enemy abilities, so i decided to make a circular shmup where you inherit the shot type of the last enemy you've defeated.
working title 'you are what you beat.'

Hope everyone is well. Below is the current progress of my game. Turning the idea of apple picking into a Getting Over It like rage game.

Started off with a character idea, did some drawing but eventually I ended up without an idea of what kind of game it's going to be. After I woke up and had breakfast I realized I was starting to not have fun, so I'm gonna ditch this little dude and start from scratch with a new idea and a new engine. Time to learn how to pico-8.
Press F for little Ra, though.
finally got an idea... time to start i guess
Well, at least toddlers might...

The "whodunnit" aspect of my game is in place! The neat part about making games like this is that you don't actually need any assets - the entire game can be played using a printout. For instance:

I think twelve farms might be too many, though.
Honestly, I was hoping to get way more done in the last half a day, but I'm still proud of what I have accomplished. My editor started giving me problems with simple things that I've done so many times before. I had some trouble setting up, but I've got a core game loop and I'm still able to showcase the mechanics I wanted to. Next is levels, sound effects, music, better art, instructions (probably).
Here's a screenshot. I did a screen recording too but I'm not sure how everyone else is uploading theirs.

Got our Discord on, our Youtrack set up and our Brain Food cooking. Let the games begin!
@sprotex @hartvichio @sipfindel @osel13

I saw the theme yesterday before bedtime, and after having a good night's sleep, I came up with a rather weird concept. Hardest mechanics have coded, so theoretically I should be able to finish in time. I'll tell you more about the game later on, but in the mean while you can enjoy the glorious 2 frame animations of the band "Chicken Mignon"

This jam is weird. I feel almost too tired to keep up but I'm still getting by.
I've made progress on my game today but I'm not sure if I'll make enough in good time yet. I've got a tile targeting system that selects and IDs tiles, I can interact and change them and next will be planting crops, watering and having them grow in stages. Using states and keeping execution order in mind is definitely helping things lots but I still have the settings menu to implement and either a hotbar or inventory (probably just the former) to allow me to equip different items and make farming feel smoother and easier for people.
Then I still have, a dialogue/menu system, the art assets to do and some more audio/music to create. So much for a solo project!
If anyone reading this happened to have played my previous game Life is Fleeting then there's a decent chance you were one of the people who wanted the tile cursor to be beneath the player as opposed to in front of the player in the direction they were moving/facing. I've got things set up so you can toggle between both ways and use your preferred style.
My game is a successor to my last one as the theme fits perfectly. I don't know whether having a shorter time limit to make things frantic again while still being chill or just having a long timer for the days would work better but maybe that's something to worry about later!
Time for a break for lunch then back to it!

The art has been entirely neglected so far so this is all purely placeholder stuff to test that things are functioning. Those water tiles are my farming tiles until I make my art 😂
Level terrain is getting generated and basic structure placement is also working. Long way to go, but we're getting there

Follow me for more production madness as I try to make at the very least a GDD while taking care of a toddler while doing promos solo in under 72 hours! I'm really testing the limits of my "Hollywood waterfall" production techniques here.

Now switching to multiplayer sync & game rounds. Leaving easy & pleasant stuff for tonight (juice, map design, etc.). 🙂
Modeling on fuuul

@Roadwarden (https://t.me/Roadwarden) tech me - environment
I've kind of got the core gameplay working now. It's not a game yet, but it's getting there
design on cubes by @asfdfdfd

And when the going gets rough remember:

(God bless the soul of whoever posted this to the LD discord. This is my new battlecry.)
Graphics almost done, now the boring part... programming.

Here we are, with a little idea about a man fishing... And his gun !
I'm starting to do blocking and first scripts while other members are sketching things.!

We hope that you will help this brave one.
He needs your support to escape traps and to gather carrots !
It will be a colorfull and fun experience, believe in the rabbit.

After a day of giving physics to dirt that really didn't need physics, this is my progress so far.
After a very long brainstorm about the game we made our beloved protagonist :tractor:

ASCII farming of sorts...

Main screen ready !

Got a new idea..

I thought I'd be able to make something in Unity but am stumbling with most of the basics ( I can't even get things to import with the correct pivot points from blender)
Anyway - here's the first abandoned 10 hours or so!

Hi everyone, I wanted to share an update on my 8 hours progresses =)
I decided to get out of my 3d and blender comfort zone and go for a 2D card game.
Since I have two left hands for drawing, I decided to ask the help of stable diffusion to get some graphics =)

I think I'm gonna call it a day. Got most audiovisuals, tomorrow will be all about coding the darn thing... Wish me luck.
Attached is the current sprite sheet, should be 98% complete-ish. Still need a few background pieces though
Ideation done. Going to be doing a pyzzle game. Starting now on the mechanics of the game. Also twitted about.
https://twitter.com/PuzzleBites/status/1611662066275811329?t=NVMHE0z4pZOWhaDWgxUV7A&s=19

My first animation ever! It's not much but It's something.

Don't have a lot of experience in Blender, so scratch "happy", I'm overjoyed! Now then, if I'm able to make him move somewhat convinsingly I'll be ecstatic!!

So i FINALLY got my idea all made up, worked on some UI and made those "cute" little virus sprites :3

Crop Rotation (the game name) is going to be a pure drafting game, like Luck be a landlord.
The engine is taking longer than I thought and I also started late. I am almost done finishing the loop but I am too tired to finish it before I sleep.
I am hoping I can finish it tomorrow, or it will have to end up as a Jam entry instead :/
We are F pressers and we are glad to participate this time. Our first (and last) time was three years ago and it was fun.
It is a game about a common man convicted to harvest fields for his antisocial behavior. What dangers will he and his Tractor-S Mark5™ withstand? I guess we'll know pretty soon.
Anyway here's a teaser screenshot.

:whitecheckmark: Ugly hand-drawn sprites with mouse and not using the undo button?
:whitecheckmark: Simple story / dialog system
:x: Having taken breaks like one should
:x: Being optimistic about having enough time to complete the game
:arrow_right: Time to step away from the computer and exercise a bit.
Hello again
The UFO project is progressing slowly but surely. There are now some opponents shooting at us, giving a little Bullet Hell feel.

I'm having a lot of problems with the game creation and I have no idea if I'll be able to make something decent by the end of the weekend, but I'm having a lot of fun!
This is a story about a farmer and his wife
