Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Second Time in Ludum Dare!

Two ludum dares in a row? Yeah!

I've noticed people specify software they're gonna be using so here's mine:

Engine: Godot Engine

Art: Blender or Aseprite

Sound effects: sfxr and Audacity

Music: Bosca Ceoil?

Good luck everyone!

Excited for LD 52

We are very excited to join LD 52. This time around we will try and create something simple, becuase we ALWAYS over scope the projects. But I guess that it is common in LD to over scope projects. This is also our 9th LD Jam and one would think that one should be a pro by now, but NOOOOOOO we are not the last LD that we did totally kicked our butts. But we are confident that we will TRY and finish this time and have alot of fun. For insperation we created a small wallpaper.

Daring to Ludum Dare Again

Heya! My team and I haven't done a Ludum Dare since #47, back in October of '20, so we decided to get back into things. We've been busy with work but we've opened up our schedule because was always enjoy this.

We'll be streaming our progress, as usual, on our Twitch channel (https://www.twitch.tv/aaghgames), so feel free to stop by and say hello if you're not busy.

Like so many others, I made a wallpaper to use during the stream:

Good luck to everyone, and have fun!

First LDJ for us!

Super Excited about the LD Jam. IT will be finally the first time my buddy & me will attend. Hope to have a lot of fun and grow our experience with it.

Cant also wait to see what others will come up with :)

Cheers! 🍻

Themes are okay (?)

Arter compiling 140 lines of spreadsheet containing all possible meanings of themes and game ideas for them, I came to conclusion, that they are not so bad.

ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif

Sure, some of them will result in tons of similar games, some of them are not exactly doable in 48 hours for my level, and for one of them (I'm looking at you, Side Effects) I still have no original ideas. Yet they are somehow giving me hope of coming up with something ingenious at the last moment.

So I'm pretty sure it will be a fun ride whichever theme will be chosen. Good luck, everyone!

articles

Hello, I often read different articles, today I read a very interesting article on gaming sites https://www.tmj4.com/brand-spotlight/10-best-ethereum-gambling-sites-in-2022-where-to-gamble-with-eth-for-real-money , here I learned about gaming sites on Ethereum, I found this article very useful so I want to share it with you, have a nice day!)

I'm in

This is the first Ludum Dare I've been able to do in a couple years due to being busy and giving away some of my pc parts to family - Found out Tuesday that there would be a January Ludum Dare so yesterday went to Microcenter and built a whole new computer I'm excited to break it in this weekend!

Am I an idiot?

I have several years of experience on Unity. I have released 6 games made with Unity. However, this time, our team participating with Godot. We have no experience(or very little experience), but Godot seems cool. Are we idiots? Is Godot over hyped over Unity? All opinions welcome. :-)

THEME POLL!

Something I like to do every LD is take a little poll of what themes people voted +1 for. It's not always accurate, and it's not a perfect science since it doesn't take into account 0 votes or -1 votes, but I still enjoy doing it. Plus, it is a great way to start conversations about the different themes, and why people like/dislike them.

So, with that being said, please feel free to click the link, select the themes you voted +1 for, and see the live results!

TAKE THE POLL!

Time to fail this

  • Me: Ok I'll do a game jam already!

  • My ADHD:

Haha look you have toes, wonder what's on Wikipedia about the treaty of Versailles.

Weird block in head

I have this weird block in head second time a row which always drew me away from participating in Ludumdare.

It is a mix of "you cant create something fun and original, give up".., "even if you can, you are not able make it visual appealing, give up"

It is annoying. :)

Probably in with Godot this time!

So, last time I used a custom game engine, which I do want to do more in the future. But, I started working on a programming language / scripting language for my game engine, and so I haven't had time to fix the multiple major problems that the engine had. (Primarily: no physics support whatsoever, which makes it much harder to do basic things.)

But good old Godot still works great, and I haven't made anything too exciting with it for a while. So I'll probably just use Godot for this Ludum Dare.

Not sure what I'll do for graphics. I've wanted to do pixel art for a while, so I basically forced myself to do so last time, but I wasn't too happy with the results. (I really should probably practice pixel art more!)

So I'll probably end up with vector graphics or similar.

As a final note, this is the first time since Ludum Dare 45 that I have essentially all of Monday free... so I could participate in the Jam this time. I'm honestly not sure if I would be able to manage my time carefully enough to make a reasonable Jam entry, but it could be fun to try.

Good luck everyone!

52 is in my name!

I'm excited to participate in this early 2023's Ludum Dare gamejam this weekend! Just finished the final voting round. Usually I print the page and scribble with a pen some ideas when talking to my girlfriend or other friends. It really helps to get into the mood! This year I only have one downvoted: Expand. So.... Guess what the theme will be then :'-) I will laugh so hard if "Expand" will be the theme!

For all of you newcommers:

First of all: welcome and have lots of fun! Here are some tips :-)

  • You are the most important this weekend, so take care of yourself (drink/eat enough, sleep enough, use a good chair, etc)
  • Be aware of ‘feature creep’, a good way to do that is to plan something that should take half of the weekend to create. After that is done, and there is more time, you could add some extra features.
  • Make sure the game is easy for you to play: you know the mechanics very well as you are the designer. For other players it should be harder to play, as they did not spend an entire weekend to design it :-)

Pre-Jam Hype Stream!

Stream - Ludum Dare 52 HYPE Pre-Jam.png

[EDIT: CANCELLED DUE TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES cuz of course it's not a Ludum Dare if everything doesn't go wrong for no reason ]

Angel and I are gonna get on stream tomorrow from 12 - 2 eastern (approximately) to talk about the final 16 themes and just generally get HYPED UP pre-jam! We're stopping an hour before to get lunch lol but will likely get back on after that to brainstorm before making our first prototype (we make tabletop games, which means printing and/or gathering components to test it out).

Honestly the aim is to get some of our friends who might stop by to wanna join in too (I LOVE inspiring others to create) but I figured I'd get in the habit of being less shy and more social and share here too. I've always had such amazing experiences with Ludum Dare in the past (it led to me making Flash games over a decade ago and now inspires my tabletop game creation!).

Feel free to come watch, chat about your game ideas (or keep them secret and keep them safe) and just generally get HYPED UPPPPPPP!!!! --> https://www.twitch.tv/weirdgiraffegames
