LD23 April 20–23, 2012

I am in !

Hi Everyone.

I’m in! I am going to participate using Construct or Construct 2 if i am going for 2D ,unity if i am going for the 3D .

So best of luck for all of us ^^

Let’s do this!

This will be my first game jam, and hopefully also my first non-mod, non-prototype game.

This Week

  1. Warming up, which will essentially be testing out tools and techniques I don’t have enough experience with.
  2. Speeding up my laptop
  3. Some university related stuff
  4. Cooking (healthy) food for 48 hours
  5. Explaining my girlfriend why I’m doing this (and not going out with her)

My Tools

  • Building: Unity
I’ve been using Unity for 2 years now, and I still like it. Luckily I have a Pro version that I can use, which has some nice new features like pathfinding, an awesome particle system tool and of course dynamic lightning. Not sure if I will use any of those, but it’s good to have.
  • Coding: MonoDevelop
Unity comes with MonoDevelop, Unity is partly integrated with it, the auto-complete is nice and I’m used to it, so I will be using it to code my C# scripts.
  • Music: LMMS
Sound, and therefore music, is the only thing I have no experience with, so I will have to practice it a lot before I start. I also have to find some nice VSTs which I can use. I do know something about music so I hope I can produce something worthy.
  • Sound: Audacity
When I have to do something with sound, which rarely happens, I use Audacity. I will probably be recording sounds with my smartphone and/or laptop microphones, and I know how to remove things like noise with this tool. Also editing and looping sound works pretty nice with this free tool.
  • Graphics:Photoshop
I love Photoshop, I have been using it from time to time in the past 10 years, I’m far from a pro but I know my way around in it. And, most importantly, it works really awesome with my Wacom.
  • Modelling: Blender
I usually use 3ds Max for 3D modelling, but I only have a student license for this, so I use Blender as substitute. Since the new interface I no longer really hate it, but I do not have a numpad on my laptop… Anyway, I want to try to make a 2D game, so I won’t use it extensively. Otherwise I will have to fall back to good ol’ 3ds Max.
  • Motivation: Spotify
I always work with music on. (Unless I’m doing hard mathematics) I usually listen to a few styles, sorted by requirement: For creativity: death metal, progressive metal and prog. rock. For speed: drum ‘n bass, deadmau5 (yes, that’s a genre) and industrial. For inspiration: minimal classical music. And for relaxation: Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, Muse, or any of my other favourite bands, that no longer need attention (because I know every single tone).
  • Communication: Twitter – This Blog
I never tweet, but I would love to give updates and give answers to questions. (Not that I would know why you would do that.) Follow: “@Siewart_”. I will be posting some blog posts as well, because the process of creating a game is awesome, inspirational and informative. (It’s also nice to look back when you are done)
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse
Everyone seems to do it, so I will do it as well. Also: I love timelapses :).

My hardware:

  • My old HP Elitebook 8530w (Dual-Core 2.8Ghz, 4GB, Quadro FX770M);
  • Samsung Galaxy S2 (Ice Cream Sandvich);
  • Wacom Intuos 3;
  • A random mouse;
  • Hopefully a keyboard

Warm-up
For my warm-up a theme generator gave me a (cliché-ish) theme: Post-Apocalyptic Steam Punk. But I vowed to use it so I will.

Basic idea: A 2D sidescroller where you have to use nuclear waste to mutate plants, animals and NPCs in order to solve puzzles involving steam engines. Don’t know if I have enough time for something like this, but I want to go through the whole process once so I might make one short level, without tutorial. I will post it when it’s done, if it’s done.

One last thing
One last thing: Good luck and above all, have fun, my dear opponents!

Ah come on, be definitely in!

I’m In!

2nd time around!

using GameMaker, Paint.NET, and SFXR.

Aphelion going in for the 2nd time

Last year, the Ludum Dare stopped for us after a less happy message during the weekend.

So let’s see what we can do this time:

We hope to be using HTML5/Canvas, Music by our own people and maybe some good graphics from our designers

Let’s get ready to rumble …..

I’m in! Hooray!

It was a last minute decision, but I’m in! Hooray. I’ll be using the following for my game, which is probably going to be a platformer.

Language: Python (2.7, or maybe 2.6 because of compatibility)

Physics: pyBox2D

Music: Otamata! (Thanks to caranha and others for bringing this to my attention!)

Graphics: pyglet, and something of my own creation – see my bitbucket repo in the near future if you’re interested. Right now it’s just some basic camera orientation stuff, but I hope to have some some nice art tools by this time tomorrow.

Unsure about sound effects right now. Depending on the theme I might see what I can get out of the neighbourhood cats.

I loved the Otamata!! Thank you for share.

I’m in (for the 1st time)

Totally excited and ready to dive headfirst into LD23 having lurked around for far too long without joining in…

Tools will be Flash + Flixel, DAME for map editing, sfxr of course, GIMP for pixels and garageband for muzak. Probably.

I’d love to work in iOS but it just seems like too much hassle to share progress that way. Anyone had any major iOS LD success stories…?

I will enter this LD using Objective-C. First I will focus on Mac OS X, but depending of the game I will also port for iOS (since most of the frameworks are the same).
18. Apr 2012 · 04:53 UTC
Sounds like a good approach, cheers 😉 Sadly I’m pretty new to iOS and haven’t tried building for mac yet. I figure if I use flixel the porting will be a little easier as there is a flixel iOS library which I’m already up and running with. If the game is efficient/small enough there’s also the iOS Air packager (shudder)

Space Assault – Progress Update

So… having simplified the design of my game, I can say with confidence that it will be a game by the end of the warmup.

I do still intend to finish it afterwards, but for now I’ll settle for the following components:

  • A few different player weapons
  • Three levels, each with a boss
  • A few different types of baddie
  • High scores in a local file

Not incredibly ambitious, but it’s a start for a shmup.

I was kind of inspired by looking through some MAME roms and seeing galga and remembering how fun it was to player in a compilation of old arcade games that I used to have. (The compilation was for a console that my family sold to some friends to pay for something else and so that the other family’s two kids could play more up-to-date games)

I was inspired to go “back to basics” with Space Assault. Therefore, it will be a fairly simple game. I have a rough idea of the weapons and baddies that will be involved in the game, but I’ll talk more about that at another time. :)

That’s pretty much it for now. I’ll post more as I go! 😀

So…

Do we really need fancy things to have a good time?

– Henry

I am in ( wow , original title )

Hi , guys ! This may be my first LD I am participating .

I will use this chance to just let me inspire and maybe finish the game if I will not finish it in these 48 Hours full of school and LD .

Tools :

Eclipse ( Code ) ; Gimp ( GFX ) ; SFXR ( SFX )

Libs :

LWJGL ( + JInput for JoyPad support ) ; Paulscode SoundLibrary

Most-Likely using external fonts like Ubuntu .

Good luck! I heard that a hammer is good for fixing eclipse and pesky mice :p

I’m in

I’m hardly a Ludum Dare regular, but I’ve done it once before and I was absolutely happy with the result, so I’m trying something a bit more ambitious for this LD – a game made in UDK. I’ve been using it a lot recently and I can more than do the programming part, and I want to force myself to have a more comprehensive knowledge of the engine. Obviously, I know how to work within my means and I more than intend to keep all content creation to a bare minimum, with minimalist levels and simple gameplay. I will also use Photoshop for graphics and Flash for HUD creation. If the brief ends up as something requiring too much content for 2 days work, I will switch to Java and LWJGL, with GIMP or PyxelEdit for graphics.

22 times you’ve done me wrong, but twenty-three’s a different song

I’m in! Let’s make something quick and fun, and polish if there’s time.

Tools you say? How about Stencyl? Ah, you like that? Okay, let’s throw PyxelEdit in there too. Still with me? Well, if I get something playable, then I’ll throw in some Bfxr work with your paid donation. And what’s this Otomata thing I’ve been hearing about?

Declaration of bleurgh

Hey Guys,
So I’m in. duh

My tools of choice are once again Unity and my trusty guitar. I won’t be using WolframTones again, as it’s results proved too similar too others.

*Frantic Announcer-Voice* How will this Ludum-Dare go? Will Boxy the Space-Cat survive it?! Or will unspeakable things happen to her?!

Tune in next week to find out.

-Matthew

(here’s the game with Boxy, btw)

I’m in

Platform: C#/XNA

Audio: sfxr

Graphics: GiMP for pixels.  I have a simple deferred renderer, a camera class and an instancer that I’m going to use.  I’ll post the source to it in the next couple of days.  Just going to use native XNA.

I’m In !

Hello everyone !

This will be my first LD and I’m pretty sure I don’t finish it. But why not, I will try to do my best !

My tools:

C with SDL under gedit for the code (I can compile under windows and linux but I don’t have OSX to port on it too)

bitbucket to store it

BFXR for the sound if I find how to make them nice to hear

– optionnally Audacity if I find a nice music generator

Gimp for the “graphics” part

And IRC for the communication if I success to not write to bad !

(is there some French LDers online this week-end for provide me some advices ? ^^)

Let’s boogie

I’m in, y’all!

I’ve learned quite a bit from my past few tries. I feel good about my chances this round.

I will be coding in Monkey, using my open-source framework (yimWork) found here.

For art I will be using Inkscape or Pickle depending on the style I choose to go with.

For my zounds I use sfxr and for le muzicka (if I get to it this time) there is LMMS.

And also

I’m in and ready for the 48h comp !

Hi to all fellow jamers !

This will be my first participation to ludum dare, and I decided to
take on the challenge of the 48 h compo.

Tools I will use :

Programming :

  • Language : AS3
  • Lib : Flixel with Power Tools plugins, MinimalComps Flash components and FlxInputText plugin
  • IDE : Flash develop
  • Custom code : My previous game with flixel as reference (not much code to reuse here)

Graphics :

  • Character sprites and animations : Graphicgale
  • Tiles and Level editor : Tile Studio along with this custom TSD file for exporting levels

Sound :

  • Sfxr

Release :

  • Dropbox

As a warmup, I will polish my poor sprite making skills :)

Ohoihoi~ I’m here

Ohoi everyone!

This will be my first LD and hopefully I’ll have fun doing this thing.

Tools I’ll be using are:

  • Code: Eclipse (Java)
  • Graphics: Game Maker
  • Sounds: No idea, we will see…

Anywho; See ya’ll in three days! 😀

You’re using Game Maker for graphics and Java for the actual programming? Interesting approach!

Let’s do this.

This will be my first year entering, as many others. We’ll see how it works out, as I’ve never done anything like this. It’ll be interesting to see how well I can manage my time and fend off my roommates who will undoubtedly be wanting me to stop coding and play LoL.

I’ll probably end up using C#/XNA as that’s what I’ve been working with lately, and using Paint.net and sfxr for tools.

My participation

Hello everyone !

This will be my first LD participation, and the first time I code with such a time constraint.

My tools:

C++ with SDL under Notepad++ (I can provide windows-mingw32 & debian binaries).

– some SDL extensions, probably SDL_image and SDL_gfx, maybe SDL_mixer if I add sound.

BFXR for the sound if I find how to make good sounds.

Paint, GiMP or Paint.NET for the graphics IF i don’t find some good free ones on OpenGameArt.org or some others.

And IRC for the communication

For the competition (but not The Jam):

Rule 2. All game code and content must be created within the 48 hours.

So even OpenGameArt.org is not allowed I think

i’m not yet sure if i do the standard competition or the jam =)

anyway i could do simple geometric tiles.
