frases lindas

Mini-LD #33 Entry – Starting/Ending Late

So here’s what happened: School got in my way.

I’m starting and ending late. I said in the rules that it is allowed, so I’m doing it.

I am starting on March 22, 12:00AM GMT and finishing on March 29, 12:00AM GMT.

Here’s my doodle:

Doodle of my game

It's a girl staring down a goblin, which should be obvious

The game is about a girl fighting various monsters using a sword and shield. The final boss will be a dragon, but isn’t pictured.

The Mini-LD version will only have a single level, but I may make more levels for it afterwards.

Hell, I may make more levels before the end of the jam if I have time.

I’m looking forward to seeing this through.

Again, starting and ending late. No big deal, right? Right. 😀

Also, tools:

  • Language: Perl
  • Libraries: SDL, Perl’s YAML module
  • Graphics: Inkscape
  • Sound: Some SFXR variant, not sure which
  • Music: If I have any, probably MilkyTracker
  • Target Platform: Mostly Linux, but if you have Perl you can just use cpan to install the SDL and YAML modules

I’m looking forward to making this!

Peace, love, and extra cheese,

– Henry

MiniLD Doodle…

The weekend is almost here, and I know I’ll be doing this a bit late, but MiniLD is flexible right? I had already budgeted the time for the weekend coming so screw it 😛 Anyways, my doodle:

I’m gonna make an RTS. May sound like a difficult task, but I’ve already got a few ideas to keep it simple. Only 3 or 4 unit types per side, no base building, no upgrade path. Purely controlling a set of units, full visibility, and 1 screen. However, I quickly need to decide something fast regarding it being 2 player:

1) Make it networked. This is actually pretty easy to do if I keep it LAN or direct IP connection. (I won’t have time to do NAT punchthrough unless Enet does it for me).

2) Make the opponent AI. I’ve never done this before for an RTS, so is probably more difficult than the previous.

3) Make it local multiplayer. Easiest option, but can it be done with an Xbox 360 controller? And well?

Anyways, thoughts? :)

UPDATE: I’m rolling with online multiplayer. IRC should provide a stable enough way for game clients to talk. It isn’t a perfect solution, but it gives me the ability to use any old IRC server that’s there to find other players easily, and DCC for communication between clients. Basically, it ticks the boxes for such a short development time frame 😉

Now THIS brings me back. We used to play ‘War’ on a piece of paper by drawing little stick men with machine guns behind trees and things. We’d move the paper around while the other guy had his eyes closed.

Yeah the only thing that I would run out of time on is having a server to do match making + NAT. Could always just use a lib to do it over an IRC server, provided the latency overall isn’t too high (could cope with 500ms easy enough) it wouldn’t be that bad. I may try that!

If you’ve never made an RTS before, you may find it is harder than you expect.

Obsession with details

Sometimes my obsession with details has no limit. The font I chose to be an integral part of my game’s design for some reason lacked a Zero and a One character, so I had to design my own that fit into the font. Is this over-zealous or do you think it’s important too?

The font I selected lacked a 1 or a 0, so I added them...

Mini LD 33

So it looks like I’m manning up and entering the mini LD this month. Just gonna insert my doodle here and see how I go. I can’t really start until Sunday but I’ll see what can get done. I may have about 6 hours to put in to the game on Sunday, but I’ll try to sketch some more graphics by then so that I don’t need to throw them together.

For the mini I’m going to give flash a go. Hopefully it won’t go too badly. The sketch that you can see in this post is less than wonderful, but I’m no artist… It was drawn using GIMP and my Wacom tablet (to which I still need quite an amount of practice). The idea is basically just a runner where the player has to jump, duck, defend and attack as their actions to continue moving along.

fg2D a free and open source 2D solution for Unity3D

Hi!

I’ve been working for some time now on a 2D solution for my own games, and I though hey! why not let other people use it. I’m very tired of the constant secrets and NDAs in my professional life, so I strive to keep my hobby projects open source.
Anyhow, I’ve just released a series of free plugins on my website (www.farrokhgames.com), but fg2D is by far the most interesting one!

I think I must point out that I would not recommend fg2D over any of the fantastic 2D solutions on the AssetStore, but if you are like me, and want to keep your games open source (and participate in the Ludum Dare comp!), I think you will find it a satisfying alternative.

Here is what it can do:

  • Generate an atlas from a number of defined textures
  • Create sprites from the generated atlas
  • Scale Texts and Sprites to be Pixel Perfect
  • Animate sprites
  • Align sprites to the screen in real time
  • Color sprites
  • Generate a Text Mesh from a BMFont text-file & texture
  • Simple gradients as text colors
  • Sprites and Texts can act as buttons with Over and Down sprites and colors

Oh, and by using the atlasing technique, it will keep drawcalls low!

All my plugins are written in C# and are right now at version 0.2a, and I really consider them being alpha. But it would be interesting to hear what people though about them, and especially fg2D.

Download it now!

Conveniently, a mini-LD!

Hey, there’s a Mini-LD on! I’d planned on spending this weekend at Hack on the Record down in London, but the friend I was going to stay with called and canceled, leaving me with a booked-out weekend and no plans.

And since I’d planned to spend the weekend jamming anyway, I thought I’d see if there was a MiniLD on instead. Lo and behold…

Sketched out in the lovely (and free!) Adobe Ideas

I’ve been mulling over adding the concept of ‘influence’ to one of my existing games, but I’m not convinced that it’s a particularly cool mechanic. So I’m going to spend the weekend prototyping a bare-bones strategy game based around the idea of spreading influence — we’ll see how things go.

I’m starting at 8:30pm on 23 March, so my compo-imposed deadline is 8:30pm on Sunday night. Let’s do this thing.

Mini LD Completed!

So I finished my Mini-LD game, and it did not really come out as I had hoped. The graphics could have been better,  it lacks music and it isn’t very unique. But despite its flaws, I find it to be interesting, as it requires plenty of thinking to beat.

Finished!

I finished my MiniLD #33 entry! What kind of game is it? It`s a point-and-click escape game! You don`t see them often, do you? And it includes many awesome things! The first one is self-made graphic engine! It literally draws levels.

And the second is draw-what-you-need system. I already posted a screenshot of it. Niiice, right? Oh, the third thing: in-game hint system! You don`t need a walkthrough button anymore, just call Virtual Bro and he`ll tell you what2do. And fourth – Portal-inspired plot! It even could use a cake. Indeed, a cake is vital in games. You can starve without one.

Ok, play this game here!

Late to the party…

Starting on the day something is due is decidedly ill-advised, but, as I understand it, the submission date for this mini is flexible, so there’s that.

the princess has to rescue the 'noble' knight...?

No idea what’s happening here, yet, but there seems to be a bit of a hostage situation with the knight…if only some brave adventurer would come rescue him…

Of note: I’ll be starting with a little bit of skeleton startup code rather than going from scratch.  I’ll post this when the entry is done.

Break The Wall

This is my entry for the Mini Ludum Dare #33.

It is written in java using libgdx. I used bfxr to create the sound clips and gimp to create a few textures. The rest of the game is composed entirely of runtime-generated box geometries, allowing me to focus on the code and not worry too much about the art side of things.

To play: download and run this jar file: btw.jar

source: btw-minild33.tgz

Windows:   double click the file
Linux/Mac:   java -jar btw.jar

How To Play:
use either WASD or u/d/l/r to control the position of the character
press spacebar to jump
press enter to fire

Enjoy :)

I have been having troubles integrating other jars inside of it…. tried webstart as an alternative but its just too complex for me atm…. got any tutorials on making an executable jar? Again, I liked the game :) keep up the good work!

In the interest of full disclosure: I just updated the .jar file linked in this post. I enabled vsync (to reduce unnecessary cpu usage) and fixed a bug that caused the bullets to behave strangely in the later levels.

MiniLD Progress

Well, I got a lot more than I expected done this weekend! Got the networking working, although I switched to ENet for the game logic. Still going to use IRC for the match making, but gotta look into NAT traversal in the coming day. Units work, control groups work, need to add some blocking objects to prevent rocks and arrows hitting you, and also differentiate between a “move” and “attack move” for a more micro heavy game. I might work on making the unit collision a bit nice, but that’s not important to me at the moment – it’s functional :) Big thanks to Cell for drawing me up the solider and archer sprites too! Here’s a picture of it in it’s current state:

The code is also available at GitHub in a branch of my engine: https://github.com/neilogd/Psybrus/tree/MiniLD33Game

My Game – Will I Make it by my Deadline?

I’m not sure.

Well, after getting tangle in Perl, it became too much to handle. I’m too anal about my code to use Perl, it seems. The OOP really got to me.

I’m using C++ right now.

But… I’m not sure that I’ll make my 1 week time limit.

When Wednesday (the 1 week deadline I set for myself) comes, I’ll submit what I have. It won’t be complete, but hopefully it’ll be something.

Well, that being said, I’m still working on it.

I’ve switched my tools around a bit, but I’m not going to post them just yet. I’ll post more later.

I’m going to finish this game one way or another, I promise you folks that.

Well, stay tuned…

Peace, love, and understanding,

– Henry

Node Reviver – My MiniLD#33

I’ve actually submitted the game before the deadline but forgot to write a post. So here it is:

You are a node reviver, your job is to reconnect nodes that have lost their connections to each other.
Move from node to node using the arrow keys.
The connections between nodes will become active once you’ve passed over them.
The goal is to activate all connections to finish the level.
Note that you can only move when standing on a node, so you need to plan your moves accordingly, especially when drones are around.

There are two types of drone:
– orange drone: just wanders around
– red drone: follows you using the shortest path

This game was written in Python and uses Pygame internally.
Note that there is no sound, as I didn’t have enough time for that.

You can download it on my entry page.

Have fun!

Vincent

Soufflé Scufflé is complete

After one week of mostly squishing bugs, my entry for miniLD #33 is now (mostly) finished

I kinda rushed towards the end, so the interface is a little ugly, and there may still be the occasional bugs. This is also the most complex game I’ve ever attempted to make.

You can play the game on my entry page.

I know I’m really late, just saw about the MiniLD. But here it is, my doodle, I’ll probably have it out by the end of the month….hopefully….

no satisfying shooting animation :(

Better Late Than Never!

Starting now, ending by the end of the month, GMT…

I’m glad I thought to stumble across here when I did; this is a perfect opportunity for me to do two things I’ve been threatening to. One is to learn Unity. The other is to make a game I’ve been meaning to. It’s based on one of my friend’s ideas, and another friend’s drawings.

Here are some selections of drawings for the idea, “A game where you shoot frogs:”

The idea is that you are a policefrog who has to shoot criminal frogs while avoiding civilian frogs. It’s going to be a first-person rail shooter. You will be stationary at each level and perhaps, can strafe a tiny bit (but basically, your movement and view will be extremely restricted).

I’m going to try to learn Unity as I go this time around – a tricky prospect, I know. My plan is to have the core game mechanics down in 48 hours. If not, I’ll ditch Unity and fall back on the familiar territory of Ogre 3D.

I want the game to have 2.5D graphics – with creatures made from 3d collections of cut-out paper drawings. This was my plan for this game even before I read the theme here. My hope is that it makes for a charming, humorous look, especially when the hand-drawn guts start flying! :)

I’m not sure how much color I will want. I think I’m going to play it by ear. I’ll post some other parameters I’m working in later :).

Thanks !

Ahoy there, anonymous gift sender – thanks for the Christmas gift exchange gifts :) They actually came in a few weeks ago, but I was at GDC, so I forgot to post for a bit!

Gift included:
– Swell Mega-Stein
– German Gaming Magazine
– A festive snack!

Unfortunately the gift I sent was “returned to sender” :(

-Phil

And now for something completely different.. (Monty Python reference intended)

I actually wanted to do the Mini-LD. Turns out, I was busy with different things.

To be exact I spent the last 2 weeks almost completely with my dad and school stuff.

My brother had this random idea to set up a small personal weather station with a site for our local network, so everybody in the family knows the exact stats of the weather (Wind, temperature etc.). My dad (who’s a amateur radio fanatic) liked that idea. So we randomly decided to get that on paper. We’ll see how it turns out.

In other news: I didn’t do the Mini-LD :(

Hey Folis,

Game Making Continues…

I’ve been making progress here and there on my mini ld entry, learning Unity as I go. I would say that I’m super happy with my progress, except that today is March 31. I guess I’d call what we have now an “early alpha.”

The enemies don’t even move properly yet – let alone fight back – but you can shoot them and they explode into guts! More importantly, it’s now at that special point where the developers love to play around with it over and over, and an actual game is right around the corner :).

Anywho, I’ve been having fun with it. I had a couple of artist friends hanging out last night and they gave me some awesome artwork to use! I’ve been up since then adding it…

I’m hoping we’ll kick it out like that again today, so maybe you guys can check out what we have so far and leave some words of encouragement?

Game (Unity web player):

P. s. Lest you think this game is about the senseless slaughter of innocent creatures, it’s not. You play the role of a frog who is a hero in his society:

Nice! The explosion is very satisfying.

“new challenger appeared!”

hi guys,

I’m a hobby game dev dude from Germany and delighted about the next Ludum Dare.

So far I didn’t really make much stuff, just fooled around with RPG Maker back in the days – but I recently found out about Flash development libraries (namely flashpunk) and fell in love with it!

Ludum  Dare seems like such a great idea, I have to take part – although I’m yet quite inexperienced.

If you want to take a look at my (so far only) game, you can check it out here:  http://flashpunk.net/forums/index.php?topic=3689.0

Also, that’s how my “coding station” looks like – however – this is normal mode. I’m curious how it’s going to end up in Ludum Dare mode :)

and this was not ludum dare ...

Ludum Dare 23 – 10 Year Anniversary – Weeks away!

Our 23rd main event is coming up in just a few weeks. It also marks the 10th anniversary of our very first event! You can check out the theme list of all the events run in the past 10 years over here, as well as some of the results (Our archival of the early days could have been better though).

Last time, Ludum Dare 22, we had an incredible 891 games submitted. This time we’re looking to break the record again, and what better way to celebrate the 10th Anniversary than to make over 1000 games!

So with that, we’d like you to help us spread the word! Tell your friends, tell your classmates, tell your co-workers, tell everyone! We want this next event to be big huge!

Veterans of Ludum Dare’s past, I want to send a special invitation out to you too. Especially if you haven’t competed in years, we’d love to see you back for this one. Ten year anniversaries only come so often ‘eh. 😉

Thanks everyone! We hope to see you taking part in Ludum Dare 23!

* * *

PS: A bit of a heads up, we will be doing another Warmup Weekend April 13th-15th. Details forthcoming, but in essence we want to encourage you to spend some time getting your tools ready for the main event on April 20th-23rd.

LD… You’re getting so many new people

Since I watched Notch’s livestream, while he was coding a LD entry, a strong force said that I should participate, too. 😀

But at that time I wasn’t very good at game programming, I only programmed other stuff than games in my university. So I started to get in touch with some graphics/game libraries for C++ and I ended up with SFML 2.0.

I really like SFML and I hope I can make something nice for LD23. It doesn’t have to be very good. I just want to have fun.  And now I think I can start with my first project in LD23. I’m really looking forward to this compo!

The main priority for me is to finish the game and of course to code 48 hours :)

So in conclusion: I wanna code! I hope you too.

And for everyone who is interested: My coding place :)

A bit messy, but that’s OK for me.

PS: I hate to say this but I hope my english isn’t too bad. I’m from germany :)

The Force is strong in here…

After watching Notch make Prelude of the Chambered and Minicraft, I decided that i am inspired enough to try to participate a competition!

Who am I? I am just another Unity dude out there, with a specific passion for basic geometic shapes (my poor modeling skills also contribute on this) and pixellated stuff. I mainly program in JavaScript, but I’ve learned that C# is much more complete un Unity. Lately I’ve been playing with Jurassic to implement a modding API, with no success. Maybe after some forced exercise I’ll catch the train (not sure if this expression exists in English). I guess i should follow those posters below and post my workspace.

My coding placeYes, there is a mrror behind my screen.

It’s a kind of average gaming computer. I like to play games and code stuff (mostly obnoxiously useless tests) and play with physics.

LD Retro

In the past, I’ve made a few arcade ROM hacks, new Z80/Pac-Man hardware ROM code, as well as writing some tools that quite a few people have used over the past 15 years or so (AGE and Turaco). Being that this next LD is notable as being the 10th, I figured I’d celebrate by attempting to do an LD entry that is “retro” to the fullest extent that I can think of.

I’m going to do a 16kbyte “Ms Pac-Man Bootleg” (mspacmab) romset entry. I will provide an emulator so that you can play it in a web browser (or at least via Java) or you can drop the romset into your MAME emulator port of choice to try it out. (Note: This means I’m targetting that cpu (Z80) Memory Map (Pac-Man Arcade Hardware), Color PROM (MsPac-Man), etc. You will be able to burn the roms, and drop them onto real hardware to play this!)

I’ll be using my z80 kernel (some routines to simplify screen drawing, handling a coindrop menu, that kind of thing) which is available on google code here: http://code.google.com/p/bleu-romtools/ . (Also there are the graphics tools mentioned before (Turaco), as well as a slightly modified Z80 assembler, adding some things that simplify use in a constrained ROM memory map)

It should be pretty fun and very challenging! I invite any of you as insane as I am to pick your retro platform of choice (Commodore 64? PET? Amstrad? Sinclair? Atari 8-bit? Amiga?) and go for it for this one along with me!

I haven’t really been in a Z80 headspace in a couple years now, I’ll be starting this on the end of a work business trip ,coding in a hotel and airplane, then working on it while helping care for a toddler, and that the tools aren’t as advanced as for other platforms…

I’m sure my entry and effort will go down in a blaze of failure, due to so many things being against me on this, but I’m going to give it a try anyway. 😀

Mini-LD 33 – Here’s What I Have…

I got buried under a mountain of base code. I have an executable that runs some silent tests in the background and exits successfully. That’s not really a game, so I didn’t bother submitting.

Here’s what I do have to show for this exercise.

I have burdened myself with several major issues:

  • Indecisiveness
  • Extra work
  • Poor time management
  • Lack of focus

So… I’m going to talk about these a bit. I’m putting a break here for folks who don’t necessarily want to read all of this. If you’re curious about why I think I’ve failed, go ahead and read after the break. :)

Still reading? Cool. :)

Indecisiveness

Here’s the biggest issue that I have. I get an idea and then drop it when it’s already too late to change ideas. This has caused problems for me in lots of ways, including in game jams.

I have to get it together and actually pick something to work on.

Extra Work

Oh yes, extra work. I enjoy C++ and low-level libraries. I have enjoyed Love2D, which provides very… limited… data format support (like, it only supports media and plaintext). Perl+SDL was an interesting choice for me and certainly a learning experience, but Perl makes it hard to do anything big due to being poorly suited to organized code.

I will have to find some way to save myself work. I’m thinking of biting the bullet and using Python+Pygame for LD like I do for PyWeek.

Poor Time Management

I have a tendency to spend my time unwisely. I get caught up in high-level stuff (XML content, high-level classes I don’t need yet) while ignoring what I actually need to make the game work. I also tend to work non-stop during the day and wind up exhausted, making me less effective as I go.

From here on, I’ll probably use Pomodoro to manage my time more effectively.

Lack of Focus

I, like many here, spend too much time on IRC during the compo. I also get distracted by other things, like cooking or drawing. It’s really embarassing. :(

So I’ll have to develop some focus. That’s not a matter of strategy, just discipline. I can manage it, though.

Conclusion

So… I did have something to show. A really good lesson about my problems as a game developer. These things don’t just happen in jams, but all throughout my life. I’m going to need to take steps to correct them.

Also… Sorry about posting late. I’ve been working on something and forgot to post here. That something… well, I’ll post about it later.

Peace, love, and determination,

– Henry

LD23 – I’m In

So I’m going to give this another try.

This year, the spring PyWeek happens in May, so I will be able to do both! Yay!

Here’s my loadout:

  • Language: Python
  • Library: Pygame
  • Graphics: GIMP
  • Sound: Some sfxr variant, not sure which
  • Music: Milkytracker, if at all
  • Level Editor: Tiled, if needed

I’m not sure what I’ll make, but probably a shmup. I’ve been meaning to make another one. Besides, shmups are pretty easy to make. :)

Remember, folks:

Failure is always an option!

Peace, love, and ambition,

Ludum Dare 23 I’m (We’re) In!

So I’m going to give this another try this year, but with a team this year!

I am working my little studio, consisting of Me(Jeremy Stark), Aaron Cahn, and Will Eriksson.

Here’s our info!:

  • Language: Java
  • Graphics: Photoshop
  • Sound: Bfxr
  • Music: Logic Pro

– The Apparat Team

Ludum Dare 23- I am in

I’m probably going to use whatever I make during the competition as the basis for my next game

Language: Java, I was going to use ActionScript, but I don’t feel comfortable with using it right now.

Graphics: GIMP

Music: Almost certainly F.L.

IDE: Probably Eclipse

Good luck, man. :)

I’m In (But Still Clueless)

I’m pretty excited for this next LD, but I’ve decided to dump SFML. So, either I’m going to use SDL, make a text-only game, use an HTML5 canvas, use Unity or maybe use Java or Processing. I think I’m going to spend a lot of time looking at documentation this time around. I’m pretty sure that GIMP and Garage Band will be in my toolset though (if there’s audio & graphics). In any case, this will be my 4th Ludum Dare, and hopefully it will be as awesome as the last 3.

My vote goes for SDL. SDL is awesome. :)

LD 23 Here We Go

Hi folks,

I am in for LD #23. This should be interesting as I have 0 artistic skills.

Here is my current loadout:
Language: D
Library: SDL through Derelict2
Graphics: Paint.net
Sound: sfxr

I may switch to java for easy cross-platform but we’ll see.
No matter what comes out it should be fun!

You’re using D? I haven’t seen that in LD before! Cool stuff. :)

“D”? What the hell is “D”? (I’m a GML user myself.)

The Warmup Weekend?! I’m in for that, yeah!

Wow, we’re having another warmup weekend! 😀

I’m definitely in for that.

I’m probably going to make a shmup of some kind. It’ll be a good break from my current project. :)

So, that’s cool. Warmups are always a good idea.

Peace, love, and exuberance,

– Henry

23 – My First Ludum Dare!

I’m planning to take part in Ludum Dare 23. This will be my first ever Ludum Dare.

I’ve recently been doing a lot of Ruby at work (via a Ruby on Rails project) and have been looking for more opportunities to practice the language. This resulted in me starting to play with Gosu and Chingu. I’m currently learning them by trying to make an Astrosmash clone.

I worked on a couple of somewhat notable mod projects in the past:

  • Marble Mania 2003 – a Marble Madness-inspired mod for the Unreal Tournament 2003 engine (textures, music, sound effects, level design, web site)
  • Scavenger Hunt – a team-based game type for the original Unreal Tournament engine (everything, minus user contributed maps)

I’m waiting to hear the chosen theme before I decide what type of game I’ll be trying to make but I will likely be using Ruby with Gosu and Chingu. If I decide to do something 3D instead, it’ll be done with Unity (or even UDK…)

My tools of choice:

  • Platform: OS X Lion on my iMac
  • Language: Ruby with Gosu & Chingu
  • Editor: vim (w/tmux)
  • Version Control: Git
  • Graphics: Photoshop & Illustrator
  • Music: Ableton Live
  • Sound Effects: Cfxr and Ableton Live
  • Screen Capture: ScreenNinja
  • Organizing: Trello
  • Focusing: Pomodoro
  • Notes: TextMate w/Markdown
  • Books: Level Up! by Scott Rogers, The Art of Game Design & A Deck of Lenses by Jesse Schell

My desk:

My third Ludum Dare – I’m in.

My tools of choice:

Platform: Windows 7, ASUS A53E i7 2630QM, on-chip Intel HD 3000 GPU
Language/libraries: Java with libgdx.
Editor: Eclipse
Version Control: Git
Graphics: Gimp, Corel Painter, Inkscape
Music: Sibelius, Epiphone Dot Semi-Acoustic Guitar, Korg X50 Synthesizer
Sound Effects: Amateur folio with built-in laptop mic and Audacity.
Organizing: Emacs Org-mode or just a *scratch* buffer
Focusing: Panic.

another generic LD23 post

Currently a little addicted to Drawception, but haven’t completely forgotten about Ludum Dare, nor has someone else – http://drawception.com/viewgame/H1PYLSpPSp/ludum-dare/

Looking forward to LD as usual – LD23 will mark 2 years for me and while it’s been a pretty dull 2 years in general, LD weekends are never dull. :) As usual I’ll probably forget about the warmup, start the LD proper unprepared, complain about the theme on IRC for half a day, then make something surprisingly ok anyway.

LD23 Scoring Idea

First, a rundown on what got me thinking of this idea….

I have no real complaints about how I scored in LD22, it was overall around where I expected, but one thing kinda stuck with me.   My actual scores were VERY inconsistant with all the feedback I received.  For instance I was pretty universally praised by all that commented (a fairly good number of people) on my community effort in doing a build for multiple platforms, a timelapse video, and even commenting my source, In the end I got a 3.2 score in that category which does not seem to reflect that (especially compared to the fact that many games that had no such things, and single platform were averaging a score of 3.5)  Quite a few people both in the comments and on IRC said the game was really fun!… I actually got no negative feedback at all on that….I scored a 2.66.  As you can see here I found it bizarre that the actual ratings were pretty much completely opposite of comments I had received.

My main point to this being, It would have been nice to know why those rating at a 1 out of 5 hated it so much, nobody seemed to want to leave any negative feedback (And I’m not just speaking for myself, a lot of other people had expressed the same confusion as to why their scores were opposite of what they would have expected from their comments), so perhaps it would be nice for 23 when we rate something it could have an anonymous comments box attached to each rating category where you have to quickly fill in the main “problem” or main “draw” as to why you’re rating a 1 or a 5?  In doing this it could actually help improve future games instead of pretty much just leaving everyone confused as to how the scoring worked after the compo is over.

Another thing I would like to see is more detailed instructions on each rating category, and a N/A rating for games that don’t use it at all (for stuff like humor…many people were rating games down overall due to humor scoring a 1 on games that were not supposed to be funny)

Also, add a “Does not run” button that removes a entry from your list of ones to rate but doesnt set a rating on it, I fear too many people were scoring games low that they simply couldn’t run and it was throwing off the statistics

This… is a good idea. Perhaps PoV or PhillHassey could implement that. :)
02. Apr 2012 · 15:19 UTC
We’re actually planning to remove the Community judging category, since as you pointed out, the majority aren’t scoring it in a way that makes sense.

I also agree with the humor category, it doesn’t make sense for games that are supposed to be more serious/emotional

First Ludum Dare

Well I’m going to do my first Ludum Dare, and probably will enter the mini LudumDare just before the main event (maybe, not 100% sure).

I’m 17 and I am from Australia =D, don’t know if there are many Australian developers will be entering, but good luck!
I will be using Java, and probably will not use any other libraries then the default Java ones (aka no slick2D or any of them)

I will be using Eclipse to program in and use Paint.net to do the art.

I Will use the sfxr for the sound.

I will be using a Windows 7 computer, 12gb ram, 1gb graphics, 2.66ghz quad core (2 years old, still good =D) and may switch between my iMac, 3.4ghz quad core, 2gb graphics, 8gb ram

Hoping I can get a working version done, even if its not 100% complete by the due date =D.

The Love Letter source code released

The Love Letter has been settling into its long tail and finally broke 500,000 views recently, so I thought it was about time to make good on my promise to release the source code.

So I did. Get it on GitHub! 😀

We’re in for Ludum Dare #23

4 Ludum Dare’s ago, I went at it alone. Not so this time, as I will be taking part in the jam, joined by my “lovely assistant” ckaotik, a first time Ludum Dare contestant.

Our platform of choice is THIS:
Drupal
We’ll try to use what the platform and modules give us, and write new modules where needed to bend this CMS into a decent game!

Our editor of choice is Sublime Text 2, along with the usual suspects (Paint.NET / Pixelmator / sfxr or the likes) for our non-programming needs.

We’re looking forward to a fun weekend!

I’m out for LD23…

I can’t justify entering this LD. I’d absolutely love to be a part of the 10 year anniversary and I’ll definitely follow along from the sidelines but the dates don’t work out, it’s the weekend before I go back to school for the last of my exam revision and it’s a bit too much pressure and time already without be throwing LD into the mix.

Definitely in for LD24 though :)

Angus

Stickers at PAX EAST!

For fun (and science), I printed up a pack of Ludum Dare themed stickers (bringing 40 with me). Come find me at PAX East, and ask for one. I’ll be around all 3 days, occasionally helping exhibit Vessel (NOT MY GAME) at the PAX Indie Megabooth. See you there!

In-ish

I’m in for LD23.  I’ll be battling third-world internet so I don’t expect to be posting many blog entries.  I’d like to join the warmup weekend as well, but we’ll see how things go.  I’m pretty warm from my recent coding activities, though I need to redo my screen capture setup.

Machine: Craptop – Windows

Language & Frameworks:  AS3; Flixel; Flixel Power Tools

IDE: FlashDevelop

Audio: Sfxr, Audacity, FLStudio

Graphics: Photoshop

Target Platform: Web (Flash, non-mobile)

Version Control: Non-existent

Screen Capture: Liable to change

Planning: Pencil and scratch paper

Organisation/Focus: Trusty Whiteboard

Edit:  Going to be doing the Jam this time.  Turns out I’m in charge of music for a youth camp that weekend, which will need my full time and attention.  I’ll start early, working from one of the top preliminary voting themes, and finish up before the camp.  I’m still going to be part of the 10th anniversary if I possibly can.

Real World Gatherings for Ludum Dare 23

Here’s a list real world events going on alongside Ludum Dare 23. If you’re planning to attend, SIGN UP/GET IN CONTACT ASAP!

Remember, Ludum Dare is an online event, so you are not required to attend a gathering, but if there’s one near by why not check it out? :)

Make a post with info about your gathering, leave me a comment, and I will add it to the list when I can.

LD#23 I’m so in!

Alright! Its LD time again!! And wow 10th anniversary, way to go LD!

I’ll be using Flixel or possibly AXEL (A new framework based on Flixel by Arkeus. You can check it out HERE and get the source on Github)

Flash Builder, Sfxr, photoshop, my handy dandy notebook and my whitey white board.

Good luck to all who enter! :)

-KunoNoOni

yay, definitelly in

  • Visual Studio
  • XNA 4 (yes, in C#)
  • GIMP
  • Ogmo 2
  • few pizzas

I dunno how it ends again, but at least i’ll try it 😉

I’m in!

Hi ludum dariens,

It will be my third LD. I will be using C++/SFML 2, Gimp and my personal library. I think I will do (again) a 2D platformer.

I am in for LD23.

Norgas

Count me in for a Compo Combo

Having just learned about the Ludum Dare just before the #22, I’m psyched that my schedule is letting me enter this time ’round. If all goes according to plan:

  1. Mr. Brett Taylor will be joining me near Philly
  2. We will code and blatantly ignore each other for the first 48 hours.
  3. We will submit individual earth-rotation-altering projects.
  4. We will combine forces for the remaining 24 hours of the Jam.
  5. Together, we will release an enhanced version of one or both of our projects to the Jam.
  6. ???
  7. Profit.

Oh yeah. It’s on.

First proper Ludum Dare: I’m in!

I’ve done a couple of Mini-LDs before, but this is the first time I’m entering the ‘actual’ Ludum Dare.

Tools I’ll be using:

  • Computer: 2.4Ghz i5 laptop, Windows 7
  • Language: Actionscript 3
  • IDE: FlashDevelop
  • Framework: Flashpunk
  • Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Sounds: Bfxr
  • Music: Probably LMMS (if I have time to create a tune)

As I work pretty much all day Saturday, I won’t have too much time to create the game. I’ll try to get it done in the 48 hours, but if not, I’ll just enter it into the jam instead.

Happy creating, ludum darers!

New in LD and tools I will use

Hi everyone,

my name is Davide, I’m attending the first year of computer science in Trento (Italy) and I’m so excited to take part in my first Ludum Dare. For my first Ludum Dare I will enter in the jam competition, I need some help with the graphics, sound and so on, and I want to use some code I have prepared in these days.
A friend of mine will help me with the graphics, hence I will stay with him in Venice the 3 days of the competition.

The tools
The tools… yeah, I think I’m bit crazy about this. It would be a lot more easier to make the game with flash, unity or other game engine more user friendly but I like challenges and for some weeks now I’m learning this cool library in c++ for making games.

For instance I will develop the game in windows, but Allegro is compatible with windows, mac, linux, iOS. If I have time left I will try to release the game with Linux version also.

My friend, that will make the graphics for the game, will use:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Flash

What will the game speak about? We have no idea, I hope on a cool theme or waiting some suggestion if someone is reading this 😀
By the way, the game will be 2D, maybe a classic plattform but with some different features. I like a lot the game Dustforce… so maybe we will stole some ideas here and there.

I will attend the warmup weekend, for test my tools I’m coding now and have some feedback from you.
Here my first adventure starts, I’m so excited and I hope I will not fail.

See you in my next post :-)

second LD, hopefully prepared!

Looking forward to my next LudumDare in a few weeks!! The last one was awesome, but i could’ve done things better as far as time management, but now with my experience from last I hope this game to be more sucessful tahn the last (I have to beat place #541 this time :p)

Tools of choice

-Unity game engine, hurrah!

-Illustrator or Gimp for Graphix

-Sound:????????

I feel kind of cheap using Unity to make my game, it seems like everyone else writes their own engines using their own libraries, lol I can’t even fathom that.

I’m also joining!

Hey guys,

This is my first time on this site, and I’m planning on participating in the Ludum Dare 23!

Tools I will be using:

  • Eclipse for Java in combination with Slick2D as an API.
  • The graphics will be done with Gimp and Paint.NET
  • SFXR will be used for audio.

Looking forwards to this competition!

Hi, hello, bonjour, guten tag and so on

Hi! So, with there being another LD on the horizon, and my noticing a few posts like this, I decided to make a post on what tools I’ll be bollocking around with. This is my first LD, so hopefully things will go well 😀

Programming:

– Game Maker

– Notepad++

– Jaffa cakes

Graphics:

– Photoshop (never used this before)

Sound & Music:

– Musescore

– SFXR

Whelp, that’s more or less it. Over and out, yo.

LD23 – I’m In for my First Ludum Dare

I’m In for my first Ludum Dare. :) I followed along other developers during the last competition, but I had some previous commitments so I couldn’t participate. However, I’ve made sure to have cleared out that weekend to participate.

This morning I was doing some thinking about possible tool options for Ludum Dare. Here is the list I came up with:

  • Star Ruby
  • Unity3D
  • JRuby w/ LWGL & Slick
  • XNA
  • Flixel
  • FlashPunk
  • Game Maker

I’ve only messed around with Star Ruby a little bit. It’s nice and simple, and I really want to explore Ruby as an option for game development. JRuby is a similar option, but I have never messed with it. I have used Unity3D in the past for a school project, but it wasn’t much more than some simple code and using the editor. XNA is what I have the most experience with, and I have some frameworks and a decent codebase to help me get started with 2D tile-based games. Flixel is probably my second most comfortable tool, as I’ve worked in it for a few projects and really enjoy it. I’ve worked with FlashPunk about a year ago, and I also enjoyed working in that. However, I’d probably work in Flixel over FlashPunk, just due to familiarity. Lastly there is GameMaker, I’ve opened it up and messed with it, but I’ve never worked on an actual project with it. I’m definitely interested in it, but I’m not sure what it’s appropriate for.

There you have it, a bunch of babbling about tech options and some random thoughts.

I’ll also be using tools like Paint Tool Sai, GIMP, Bfxr, and whatever else I discover I need.

I look forward to LD48, and good luck to everyone else. :)

Ready and waiting!

Hello! Coinciding with the tenth anniversary and willing to test myself, I’ve decided to participate in LD… who knows what will come out of it, but risk is fun.

Programming: GML, with Game Maker 8
Graphics: Probably Game Maker too. If it’s an urgency, maybe Paint.NET
Sounds: BFXR
Music: Inudge.net

I’m In (Third Time! :D)

I return once more from the brink of insanity, TO THE BOWL OF IT!!! }:)

I honestly can’t tell you guys how excited I am for this, I LOVE THIS COMPETITION! This is my 3rd time participating, and since the last one I’ve actually started a company and published a few games! You can check those of us at Syntactic Sugar Studio out here, or here on Facebook.

Anyways, I’ll be using the following:
IDE:  MonoDevelop

Language: C# and JS

Framework: Unity3D

SFX: BFXR

Music: FL Studio 9

Art Assets: Paint.Net, PixelEdit(tiling tool created by a friend)

Libraries: Of my own design, which I will make available on the studio site.

ETC: Goldfish, family, and friends! But mainly Goldfish. 😀

Tags: CSharp, FL Studio, im in, monodevelop, paint.net, unity3d

First dare!

First Ludum Dare here, super stoked to participate. My tools are:

  • Unity3D / C#
  • Maya, Photoshop
  • TexturePacker
  • Prime31’s UIToolkit
  • Pizza & beer
  • SFXR!

First Ludum Dare

I’m going to give this a shot.

Tools:

Gimp / Inkscape
SFXR / Audacity
Flex SDK, nano, make – that’s right CLI flash development unless I change my mind and use C++ and SDL.

Here’s hoping I manage to complete something!

Edit: My simple flash boilerplate if anyone is interested.  It’s basically a preloader, simple menu, and resource loader. – ffw.tar.gz

It includes greensock tweenlite, everything else is MIT/BSD, whatever.

I used to use a Flash setup like that – trust me though, if you’re able to run FlashDevelop (i.e. if you’re running windows), try it – your productivity will go through the roof.

I’m in! Probably?

I was just looking at the files for my unfinished LD22 game, and I found a schedule that I’d written up for that weekend:

Friday night 11-1:
Brainstorm, sketch, maybe start basic code.

SET ALARM FOR 6
SLEEP

Saturday morning 7-9:
Make graphics

SHOWER AT 9
LEAVE FOR WORK at 9:40

Saturday night 8-1:
code everything, design levels.

SET ALARM FOR 6
SLEEP

Sunday morning 7-12:
Hide a kitten in the game.
Playtest, polish, upload by 12:00

LEAVE FOR WORK BY 1

How did I not finish a game? :(

So yeah, hopefully I’ll have more time this LD. I’m super stoked! Good luck everybody and I’ll see you in… 17 days? really?

LD23 here I come

First time participant here. I haven’t really ever completely finished a game, so here’s hoping LD will provide the motivation I need. :)

Tools:

  • FlashDevelop
  • Haxe + NME
  • Paint.NET
  • musagi and/or inudge (or Wolfram Alpha Tones if I run out of time)
  • bfxr

Going to give it a try without any kind of framework or game library as a foundation. That may come back to bite me, but it’s the direction I think I’m heading in.

Wish me luck!

First Time

I look forward to an awesome weekend!

Here’s what I’m going to use:

  • Java with Eclipse as my IDE
  • SFXR and possibly muse score if I have time to compose something
  • Tiny Sound for sound control
  • GIMP for artwork
  • Git for version control
  • RecordMyDesktop for timelapse

I’ll be testing myself over next week and hopefully I’ll be able to finish a game in 48 hours.

Ludum Dare 23

This will be my first time competing..Altho I’m curious how many people strongly dislike the idea of a XNA game being done here.

If people absolutely hate it,  I’m tempted to use my old gamemaker license.  Email me at doomium(at)yahoo.com if you have any input.

Use the tool/language you feel most comfortable with but make it for the people who

want to play the game as easy as possible to get it started. Happy Coding

I’m in! 2nd time around!

Looking forward to my second ludum dare and my primary goal is to actually get something finished this time around.

Language: Actionscript 3

Library: Flashpunk

IDE: Flash Develop

Graphics: Graphics Gale or Inkscape depending on pixel art or vector art

Sound: Undecided (suggestions are welcome on easy to learn sfx and music creators)

Again I can’t wait to see what everyone puts together!

Freesound.org is a good place to find free sound effects (and some music) for projects. Then Audacity is a free, opensource basic sound editor. Keep in mind however that Audacity is more for editing existing tracks rather than for track creation.

I`ll be in!

It`s my fifth LD (second not-mini LD), and I`m in! (I`m having 3 competitions this month) What I`ll use:

Coding: PhYard

Graphics: GIMP

Audio: sfxr, PXTone, Audacity (maybe GP5)

Timelapse: Chronolapse (Last time I tried to use it it didn’t work, so I`m not 100% sure)

I`m not sure will I participate in compo or jam. That`ll depend on how much will I do in 2 days.

Hi there.

Hello, my name is Raimonds and I’m from Latvia. I’m in for LD #23. This is my first time and I hope to finish with something.

Language: Actionscript 3
Library: Flashpunk
IDE: Flash Develop
Graphics:  Gimp and Paint
Sound: sfxr, and something for music
Timelapse: Chronolapse

Less sleep, if any for a weekend, but that will be awesome. Would love to live stream, but can’t because of my hardware. More about me: http://raimonds.list.lv/#eng (Should redesign this, but for now it is as is). I’m not the greatest artist, but I will try hard to get some good graphics going. I’m going for solo this year.

Good luck for everyone.

There’s always a first time

Hello everyone,

This’ll be my first time doing the LD. I’m really looking forward to it and hoping I’ll be able to make something cool or weird or new or complete !

Here are the tools I’m going to use:

Programming: HTML5/Javascript with my own framework, the {FM.js(engine);}.

Graphics: GIMP, Inkspace.

Sound and music: bfxr, inudge.net, Freesound.org.

Can’t wait.

Simon

Untitled 1.0 Released

I recently finished and released a Post-Compo version of Untitled from Ludum Dare #21. In Untitled you are stuck inside an Abstract painting, and need to reach the bottom to escape. There are Abilities and Traits that you gain for selecting a color, as well as score pickups to be had.

Hey, my name is Joseph, I’m from England. I’m going to be participating in LD #23, this will be my first time participating
and I will hopefully be able to  finish something, if not I will have fun doing so.

I will be using:

Language: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Graphics: Paint.net
Sound: sfxr

Got a few tests at school around that time, but will hopefully be able to manage (Won’t be having much sleep if any).

My First Ludum Dare

Language: XNA
IDE: VS2010
Graphics: photoshop
Sound: sfxr

woot!

Hello, Ludum Dare. We meet again.

Last Ludum Dare, (22) I entered the compo with Isolated Assault, a 48 hour game.

Since then, I’ve struggled to make a post-compo version, because it’s too boring, the game’s basically already complete, and I don’t think that many people will play it anyways.

So what have I been doing these past months?

  • First, I’ve been working on improving my music. I realized, much after the fact, that the song I wrote for Isolated Assault was actually kind of catchy and pretty impressive considering what other songs I’ve written at the time. (Here’s a tutorial for writing music I made so that hopefully there will be more amazing music in Ludum Dare entries)
  • Also, I’ve been working on a YouTube series called Conner’s Kingdom using a game called Minecraft. (Made by Notch, who joins Ludum Dare every competition)
  • Finally, I’ve finally been able to sit down work on a game project, after being inspired by Mirror’s Edge. Remember “Parkour Project” from this image?
  • I’ve been developing the project into something better and worked on, using scripts and elements I’ve already created from past games, and I’ve got a pretty good free-run system. Using some pre-made buildings, I’ve got an open world level started, though it still needs a lot of work, and I have no clue how I’m going to make the story line.
  • I’ve also been working with light-maps and working on improving my level lighting, and I’m impressed with Unity’s shadow system. Though I won’t be able to make moving objects have shadows, because that requires Unity Pro.
  • I realized I’ve been using techniques to get around Pro features, such as overlaying a plane over a camera with darkened edges to get around the fact that you can’t have vignettes in Unity Free. And I’ve also realized that particles can add a lot of detail to levels, and Unity’s new particle system works pretty good.

So what will I do for Ludum Dare 23?

I’m hoping the theme will be new and creative this year, for the 10th anniversary, but yet specific enough that I can make a game out of it. I think I want to make a 2D side-scrolling action game, but I’m not sure until I see the theme. I might stick with first person, though, because it’s much easier.

I hope to once again record a time lapse, though with less frames per minute, because the last one took forever to render and watch. Also, I will probably lower the resolution to an easy 720p and use YouTube instead of dropbox, to make it easier to watch.

I’ll make another post detailing the tools I’ll be using later on in the week. Thanks for reading, and please remember Rob Productions when voting for Ludum Dare 23!

Oh, and one more thing: Last Ludum Dare, I said my goal was to beat Notch in at least one category. I ended up beating him in seven.

Apparently, I’ll have to raise my goals. This competition, my goal is to get top 10 in at least one category. (Btw, last Ludum Dare my closest place to top 10 was #40, in the community category)

Ludum dare 23 : I’m in!

I spent almost the whole LD22 watching others programming. This time, I’m in!
My objectif : make something playable and fun :)

Coding : Java using Eclipse. No library, no framework.

Graphics: Simple graphics made with Paint.net

Sound: sfxr

Count me in!

I’m still uncertain if I will be able to join this event, but I would like to. Here’s the stuff I’m planning in using for this project!

For the audio, I might use LMMS for the music and Audacity for some sound effects as well as SFXR.

I will use GIMP for my graphics and Eclipse for my IDE.

I am also planning in programing my entry in Java using slick2d.

My quick developed demo :)

please play and comment anything about this little demo I’ve been experimenting with comment on any issues you have what works what doesnt and hopefully if you had any fun at all lol! This was the product of a couple of hours work which makes me more confident I’m able to enter ludum dare soon.ps i know the drift is crazy im working on it any other unity developers feel free to comment suggestions please.

edit…fixed link lol

confidence boosting if i get either of the days off the next compo i plan to actually complete my game this time thanks guys

LD23: I am, as they say, In.

Alright! Let’s do this thing!

This will be my second LD attempt (my last was LD20), and I am pretty excited. 16 days and counting.  In terms of code library/game engine – I tend to prefer starting with a fairly clean slate.  In saying that, I’ve got a bunch of helper classes I’ve written throughout my travels, I’ll post an updated version of those as we get closer to launchday.  At a rough estimation, the comp will start for me at 6am.  Awesome.

Coding:
actionscript3! wooyeah!
– flashdevelop.
– and, if I feel the game needs it – harnessing the rad power of Stage3D via Starling.

Graphics:
 – Flash.
TexturePacker.

Sound:
Jeskola’s Buzz
– Audacity
– Sfxr

Other Tools:
 – in LD20 I made a quick little ‘away timer‘.  I’ll probably be using this again, might make a few changes here and there, Will keep you people posted!
– I will also be using chronolapse, to do a rad timelapse.

And finally, I will LIVESTREAM the whole event via kondoot.com – I’ve made an event in preparation and everything.

Using Flash Libraries?

So, I’ve seen a lot of games which use, and heard a lot of people talking about different libraries in Flash, such as Flixel, Box2D, FlashPunk, etc. Personally, I’ve only used Flash CS5, with the regular API and no external code, nothing I haven’t written myself.

But a lot of people use these libraries, and they seem to be particularly effective, especially with pixel based games. Furthermore, the regular graphics in Flash is supposedly inefficient, and lags up quite a bit whenever you try and get it to do too much.

So does anyone have any recommendations as to what direction I should take my programming, especially for the next Ludum Dare? I’m not a complete noob, and I have made tile-based games and things like that myself, I’m mainly concerned with efficiency and reducing lag, and also the 48 hour time limit.

From what I’ve understood, you are safe as long as you use libraries which everyone can use. If it’s your one personal library, tell it with your « I’m in ! » post, make your code available on the internet, write a bit of documentation.

Rule of thumb could be « no gameplay code before or after the 48h ». The plan is to make a game, not an engine.

I am not sure whee the boundaries lie on using your old code, but since you have experience with the base Flash API, I’d recommend sticking with it. I have been using flixel lately myself and though its a very nice little codebase, I wouldn’t suggest picking it up for the purposes of using it in this Ludum Dare. Yes, it is easy to learn and use but just over two weeks is not enough to really become familiar with a package IMHO, and familiarity is important under the 48hr time constraint. I would imagine the same thing holds for the other packages out there.

I’m in!

So… I really just want to do this without making the rookie mistakes that I did last time.

I’m just using Multimedia Fusion 2 for code and graphics.

For music & sound I’m allowing myself garageband and audacity, seeing as how I have access to both MacOS and Windows.

Warming Up for LD23

I’ve been doing a number of things to prepare for my first Ludum Dare.

First off, I set up a public Ludum Dare 23 Kanban Board  on Trello to track my To Do items. Currently it includes a lot of preparation items (getting software installed/updated/familiarized, reading, etc.). During the competition I’ll be using it to organize ideas and development tasks. It’s also quite possible it might be overkill for the competition but it’s proving useful for preparation.

I bought The Game Jam Survival Guide which I’m guessing lots of Ludum Darers already know about. It was a good read and served as a good reality-check as to what to expect and what I should be shooting for.

In an effort to make sure I’m creating something releasable I added Spooner’s releasy gem to the in-progress Astrosmash clone I’ve been creating with Chingu called Astroblast. So far I have it successfully building and packaging on the Mac. Next up will be Windows. This project will likely serve as a template for my entry’s code layout and distribution. I’ve also been collecting helpful Ruby and Chingu links to use during the contest.

Here’s a screenshot of Astroblast, my first attempt at a game with Ruby.

Personal LD Warmup – Complete!

So an hour and a half ago I challenged myself to create the best thing I could in that time. After browsing for a theme, my friend suggested “Zombie Space 2D Side-Scroller.” So I was off.

I use Love2D as the tool of my trade, mainly because I have had the most experience with it.

Using Notepad++ as my editor I was off and within a couple of minutes had a crude space man (that I later ditched) drawn. I made him move around on the screen then added a basic tile-map drawing thingy and I was off to a good start.

After messing around with alternate menu-screens for 10 minutes I had wasted some time (which I could have put into the enemies).

I then added a camera, which followed the player and gave it some boundaries. And then my time was up.

I feel like I accomplished a lot in this one and  a half (and learnt a fare bit too) but did learn a few things.

-Only add what you need, don’t mess around with anything that isn’t a necessity

-Good~ish art is a must, because you would hate yourself later on and hate you game.

-Make you game with the smallest amount of features possible, then add random stuff until the time limit.

Inside my time limit, I didn’t have time to make any enemies, or any AI for them so I will leave that for tomorrow (and work on this game more!).

So I did kind of fail :( because I didn’t get what i wanted in time, but I say 30 more minutes and it would have had everything I wanted.

This had been my first ‘real’ game-jam of sorts that I have done something for, and just thought I should tell people how I went!

Timelapse and Source Code will be uploaded tomorrow after I get some rest

Taking the plunge!

Sure, let’s do this, my first Ludum Dare (or game jam of any kind)! I’m a graduate games programmer, with very little to show for it. At least this’ll give me the motivation to work on a project, and actually get a finished game for my portfolio (which is looking rather bleak at the moment). I’ll be working towards the Jam and not the Compo, due to work schedules during the weekends.

Code: XNA using C#. I’ve done a little bit of work in XNA before (basic 3D tech demo), and I generally know how a game should be structured… but I’ve never actually made a completed game before. I’ll also be sticking with 2D, and probably a basic game design because I’m not really any good at that stuff.

IDE: VS2010

Graphics: Photoshop CS5

Sound: sfxr? I’ve never really made any sound stuff before, so that should be a laugh.
