frases lindas

Mini-LD #33 Entry – Starting/Ending Late

So here’s what happened: School got in my way.

I’m starting and ending late. I said in the rules that it is allowed, so I’m doing it.

I am starting on March 22, 12:00AM GMT and finishing on March 29, 12:00AM GMT.

Here’s my doodle:

Doodle of my game

It's a girl staring down a goblin, which should be obvious

The game is about a girl fighting various monsters using a sword and shield. The final boss will be a dragon, but isn’t pictured.

The Mini-LD version will only have a single level, but I may make more levels for it afterwards.

Hell, I may make more levels before the end of the jam if I have time.

I’m looking forward to seeing this through.

Again, starting and ending late. No big deal, right? Right. 😀

Also, tools:

  • Language: Perl
  • Libraries: SDL, Perl’s YAML module
  • Graphics: Inkscape
  • Sound: Some SFXR variant, not sure which
  • Music: If I have any, probably MilkyTracker
  • Target Platform: Mostly Linux, but if you have Perl you can just use cpan to install the SDL and YAML modules

I’m looking forward to making this!

Peace, love, and extra cheese,

– Henry

MiniLD Doodle…

The weekend is almost here, and I know I’ll be doing this a bit late, but MiniLD is flexible right? I had already budgeted the time for the weekend coming so screw it 😛 Anyways, my doodle:

I’m gonna make an RTS. May sound like a difficult task, but I’ve already got a few ideas to keep it simple. Only 3 or 4 unit types per side, no base building, no upgrade path. Purely controlling a set of units, full visibility, and 1 screen. However, I quickly need to decide something fast regarding it being 2 player:

1) Make it networked. This is actually pretty easy to do if I keep it LAN or direct IP connection. (I won’t have time to do NAT punchthrough unless Enet does it for me).

2) Make the opponent AI. I’ve never done this before for an RTS, so is probably more difficult than the previous.

3) Make it local multiplayer. Easiest option, but can it be done with an Xbox 360 controller? And well?

Anyways, thoughts? :)

UPDATE: I’m rolling with online multiplayer. IRC should provide a stable enough way for game clients to talk. It isn’t a perfect solution, but it gives me the ability to use any old IRC server that’s there to find other players easily, and DCC for communication between clients. Basically, it ticks the boxes for such a short development time frame 😉

Now THIS brings me back. We used to play ‘War’ on a piece of paper by drawing little stick men with machine guns behind trees and things. We’d move the paper around while the other guy had his eyes closed.

Yeah the only thing that I would run out of time on is having a server to do match making + NAT. Could always just use a lib to do it over an IRC server, provided the latency overall isn’t too high (could cope with 500ms easy enough) it wouldn’t be that bad. I may try that!

If you’ve never made an RTS before, you may find it is harder than you expect.

If you manage to make a working RTS AI, for the first time, in a week, I’ll give you a trophy!

MiniLD #33 Progress Update

Progress has been rather slow over the last couple of days, but I now have my hexagonal board working:

Test it here. Instructions: SPACE to focus on a different character, UP to move focused character forwards, LEFT and RIGHT to rotate character.

Obsession with details

Sometimes my obsession with details has no limit. The font I chose to be an integral part of my game’s design for some reason lacked a Zero and a One character, so I had to design my own that fit into the font. Is this over-zealous or do you think it’s important too?

The font I selected lacked a 1 or a 0, so I added them...

It isn’t over-zealous at all! After all, 1’s and 0’s are the life blood of all computers 😉

Mini LD 33

So it looks like I’m manning up and entering the mini LD this month. Just gonna insert my doodle here and see how I go. I can’t really start until Sunday but I’ll see what can get done. I may have about 6 hours to put in to the game on Sunday, but I’ll try to sketch some more graphics by then so that I don’t need to throw them together.

For the mini I’m going to give flash a go. Hopefully it won’t go too badly. The sketch that you can see in this post is less than wonderful, but I’m no artist… It was drawn using GIMP and my Wacom tablet (to which I still need quite an amount of practice). The idea is basically just a runner where the player has to jump, duck, defend and attack as their actions to continue moving along.

fg2D a free and open source 2D solution for Unity3D

Hi!

I’ve been working for some time now on a 2D solution for my own games, and I though hey! why not let other people use it. I’m very tired of the constant secrets and NDAs in my professional life, so I strive to keep my hobby projects open source.
Anyhow, I’ve just released a series of free plugins on my website (www.farrokhgames.com), but fg2D is by far the most interesting one!

I think I must point out that I would not recommend fg2D over any of the fantastic 2D solutions on the AssetStore, but if you are like me, and want to keep your games open source (and participate in the Ludum Dare comp!), I think you will find it a satisfying alternative.

Here is what it can do:

  • Generate an atlas from a number of defined textures
  • Create sprites from the generated atlas
  • Scale Texts and Sprites to be Pixel Perfect
  • Animate sprites
  • Align sprites to the screen in real time
  • Color sprites
  • Generate a Text Mesh from a BMFont text-file & texture
  • Simple gradients as text colors
  • Sprites and Texts can act as buttons with Over and Down sprites and colors

Oh, and by using the atlasing technique, it will keep drawcalls low!

All my plugins are written in C# and are right now at version 0.2a, and I really consider them being alpha. But it would be interesting to hear what people though about them, and especially fg2D.

Download it now!

Conveniently, a mini-LD!

Hey, there’s a Mini-LD on! I’d planned on spending this weekend at Hack on the Record down in London, but the friend I was going to stay with called and canceled, leaving me with a booked-out weekend and no plans.

And since I’d planned to spend the weekend jamming anyway, I thought I’d see if there was a MiniLD on instead. Lo and behold…

Sketched out in the lovely (and free!) Adobe Ideas

I’ve been mulling over adding the concept of ‘influence’ to one of my existing games, but I’m not convinced that it’s a particularly cool mechanic. So I’m going to spend the weekend prototyping a bare-bones strategy game based around the idea of spreading influence — we’ll see how things go.

I’m starting at 8:30pm on 23 March, so my compo-imposed deadline is 8:30pm on Sunday night. Let’s do this thing.
