LD31

December? Hell yea.

Needless to say: I’m in. Need to slightly change my sleep rhythm and all, because weird time zones. (Yes, I’m speaking to you, Americans. :P)

This time, I will be working alone. Past experiences showed me, that it really didn’t go to well to do a Game Jam with people that live in different time zones.

What will I be using?

Engine: Unity 4.6 (If we get Pro Trial Licenses, then I’ll use the Pro.)
Language: C#
IDE: Probably Visual Studio
Audio: Fruity Loops, Audacity, sfxr, Abundant Music
Graphics: Photoshop, 3DS Max
Misc: Pen and Paper for Mindmapping and Notes, Trello, Coffee

I’m excited! Will edit this post, once I decide to add anything to my tools list.

Slow start

So, I just woke up. Or actually, I already woke up at 3 AM my time, when the theme was announced, but I didn’t want to screw up my sleep rhythm.
I’m somewhat disappointed about the theme. This one is just a bit vague. But what can you do? Need to be in peace with it now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Not sure how much work I can actually put into this LD, since my life is really busy at the moment and I kinda should rather sort through paperwork and pack boxes for moving. But I told myself, that I at least get some kind of game done. If I feel, I don’t make it in the 48 hours, I can always just drop out and take the extra hours for the Jam.

Anyways, good luck and have fun. :)

LD34

Donโ€™t stop me now!

Hi!

Been looking forward to this LD for a good while, mostly because the past events I had things come up on the weekend… Somethings seems to get drawn to Ludum Dare everytime I plan on participating. Even this time… but with the difference that I can actually sit in front of my computer and develop, instead of being away from home all the time. And to some extent the dog I’m taking care of during the weekend will benefit my productivity to some degree… be it fluffy d’awwww happiness, notifying me to take a break, provide SFX samples for me and such. Yea, having a dog as your companion is pretty neat.

Tool-wise I’m pretty much using much of the common software others use… but for the sake of it, here’s a rough overview:

โŠ— Engine โ‡’ Unity 5.3
โŠ— Programming & Text Editing โ‡’ Visual Studio Community 2015 (C#), Notepad++, Atom
โŠ— Graphics โ‡’ Photoshop CC, PyxelEdit, 3DS Max
โŠ— Audio โ‡’ Audacity, sfxr, FL Studio
โŠ— Hardware โ‡’ 49-Key MIDI Keyboard, PC with 3 Screens + Android Tablet, DIN A4 Paper, Pen & Eraser, Wacom Graphic Tablet, Bosch Tassimo T40 Coffee Maker

Might consider streaming the whole thing via twitch as well. But definitely will post an update once every now and then. Since I live in Germany and the start time of LD is kinda late at night I will also oversleep the start, but then will be rested well once I get up in the morning. Managing your energy and scheduling your overall day, including sleep, breaks and food is important a jam. :)

Anyways, hope you all have a good week and I will see you this weekend!

Time to start! Slow, but good!

Alrighty~

Time for me to start working on this gem. Had a hard time coming up with a decent idea, but in the end I think having those two themes together gave me one to work with.
I don’t have anything playable yet, but wrote down a good bit of the rough gameplay. Now I will first prototype the whole thing and then add some beauty to it. :)

Hope you are doing well too! Might stream some bits at at some point.

LD36

Dare me!

This weekend will certainly be interesting. I’m really hoping for a decent theme to work with, somehow last LDs didn’t really appeal to me.
Since I’m in Germany, Europe I will start later, roughly 4-5 hours after the inital start. Can’t justify staying up that late into the night, especially not being productive at all. (Plus I have work again on Monday.)

If I feel like it I might stream the whole thing over on Twitch, but don’t count on it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My tools of trade are the following:

Engine: Unity 5 or SuperPowers
Code Editor & Text Editor: Visual Studio, Atom, Notepad++
Audio: Fruity Loops, Audacity, sfxr, Abundant Music
Graphics: Photoshop, 3DS Max
Misc: 2 Monitors (24″ + 22″), Cherry MX-Board 3.0 Mechanical Keyboard with Brown Switches, Xbox 360 Gamepad, M-Audio KeyRig 49 MIDI Keyboard, Coffee, Cats to cuddle with <3

LD 40

Maybe this time?

The last few times I've been struggling to really participate the Compo, for several reasons. One might have been not feeling it on the weekend and also I wasn't much into the theme that was chosen.

I'm hyped for the coming Dare though and hoping for a decent theme getting voted for!
Sadly the Compo starts at 3 AM here in Germany, so most likely I'll have a good nights sleep and wake up fresh in the morning, instead of lurking until the night.

Definitely I have to organize myself a bit better and make some kind of rough work plan/schedule.

As for the Tools I will use:

Game Engine: Unity3D (C#) or Godot (GDScript)
2D Graphics: Photoshop, Pyxel Edit
3D Graphics: Blender
Audio: Mixcraft, Audacity
Editor: Visual Studio (Code)
Source Control: GitHub (Git)
Organisational: Trello
Screen Capture: OBS (to Twitch) (Not sure if I live stream yet.)

Well then, I'm currently slaughtering my way through the themes and will hopefully see you all around next weekend!

Magazine Guy

Alrighty, I finally started on my game!

Actually was still awake at 3 AM and saw the theme, quickly had an idea and went to bed then.

Now, programmer art behold:

GreatDefiniteIguana-size_restricted.gif

Still is very basic, but it's something!

LD 41

I might or might not be in

Hey guys!

This Ludum Dare I can't certainly say if I will participate, seeing as my final exams are on the following Wednesday after the Event. But who knows! If the theme is extremely attractive to me, I might just use the Ludum Dare as some form of relaxation. :D

If I join in, I'll probably use a standard toolbox of things: - Unity3D or Godot or PhaserJs - PyxelEdit, Photoshop, Blender for everything graphics related - FL Studio, Audacity for audio stuff - Visual Studio, vim and Visual Studio Code for code stuff - Git (and GitHub) for version control

LD 42

This time... I have time!

Alrighty! 42 is a good number.

And it happens that I still have free time on the weekend of the LD. So I'm most likely in!

Ready for the weekend full of jamming!

As I posted earlier last week, I'm most likely participating in this wonderful 42. Ludum Dare. So far the Theme Voting is encouraging.

The tools of my choice are fairly common and nothing special and I will probably stick to 2D for simplicity, but here we go:

  • Game Engine
    • Unity3D or Godot
  • Graphics
    • Photoshop
    • Pyxel Edit
    • Blender (maybe)
    • I might experiment with Rotoscoping using "Paint of Persia" (https://dunin.itch.io/ptop)
  • Audio
    • Audacity
    • Mixcraft 8
    • Abundant Music (probably; http://abundant-music.com/) or some similar Algorithmic Music Generator
  • IDE/Text Editor
    • Visual Studio 2017
    • Visual Studio Code
  • Organisation Tools
    • Trello
    • Paper & Pencil
    • Whiteboard
  • Version Control
    • Git (with GitHub)
  • Relaxation Tools
    • Comfy couch
    • 2 extremely cuddly cats
  • Hydration Tools
    • Countless cans of generic energy drinks
    • Generic Cola
    • Tasty water from my tap
  • Getting my Mind Off Coding Tools
    • Fresh air outside
    • Android Phone with Pokemon Go
    • Ukulele

Okay, that's about it. I'd imagine this set of tools is rather common for a lot of folks, except maybe 2 extremely cuddly cats keeping me company and definitely trying to get my attention if they get hungry or in need of pets. But I'll survive that!

As a reward for reading this post, have a picture of my cats! Click me!

See you this weekend!

Do you know about the Ludum Dare IRC Channel?

EDIT: Oh! Tim just asked me to remind everyone who's reading about the Ludum Dare IRC Channel over on AfterNET! Feel free to connect and join #ludumdare on irc.afternet.org with your favorite IRC client and discuss the jam with other jammers! If you don't have a client for IRC, I recommend Hexchat (https://hexchat.github.io/) - nice and easy to use client. If you'd rather want to use a web based client, google for Mibbit or Kiwi IRC.

Just a bit over 2 hours before the fun starts!

Not too long until the theme gets revealed.
I want to take this opportunity to talk a little about the final -1/0/+1 votes I made.

Legend: ๐Ÿ‘ = +1 ๐Ÿ‘Ž = -1

  • Running out of space ๐Ÿ‘Ž I dunno, I think this would lead to a lot of inventory management games.
  • Night is coming ๐Ÿ‘Ž I think this kind of theme is overdone.
  • Decay ๐Ÿ‘Ž Wouldn't know what to make of this.
  • Safe in the dark ๐Ÿ‘Ž Hm, could either lead to interesting stealth mechanic games or common light/shadow puzzles.
  • Fragile ๐Ÿ‘ I think this one has potential. Fragile is something you can bend a lot, be it phyiscal things that easily break or even the mind of a human being.
  • You are the final boss ๐Ÿ‘Ž As of right now I can't think of any fun and manageable gameplay for this.
  • Evolve ๐Ÿ‘Ž Really?
  • Light is key ๐Ÿ‘Ž The same as with Safe in the dark - would lead to a lot of light based puzzlers.
  • Death is useful ๐Ÿ‘ Another fun theme you can bend the definition towards ones liking.
  • Two points of view ๐Ÿ‘ This makes me think of some interesting gameplay mechanics with having different camera angles or even 2 player controlled characters.
  • Dying planet ๐Ÿ‘Ž Uh.
  • It's spreading ๐Ÿ‘Ž What is spreading? Marmelade on a bun?
  • 3 Rules ๐Ÿ‘ You do not talk about fight club. You do not talk about fight club. You do not... wait, what? How about breaking the rules?
  • One enemy only ๐Ÿ‘Ž Not sure how to feel about this exactly.
  • One minute ๐Ÿ‘Ž Meh, way too generic for my liking.
  • You control the environment, not player ๐Ÿ‘Ž While it could be a fun theme, I also think it would result in lots of generic puzzle games.

Okay. You probably think a lot different on most themes than I do, but what should I say... that's life and humans for you. Whatever theme gets picked in the end, I'm sure I will come up with a fun and feasible game concept to build within 48 hours. So will you! <3

Progress! Sort of... Behold the Ultimate Landfill Manager 42

Struggled a while with getting a game concept that I would enjoy implementing. But I finally got one!

Behold the Ultimate Landfill Manager 42!

You are the manager of some unnamed trash landfill in the year 2042. Getting rid of trash and waste has evolved into some kind of hobby or even sports for a lot of people, the reason why that phenomenon even happened is still not known to scientists. The landfill business is blooming, but you only have so much space on your property. Your goal is to serve the masses of customers wanting to bring their trash to your landfill. Rake in cash from them by taking their recycable trash, biological waste and properly deny the taking of toxic or even illegal waste. Manage your trash storage and process recycable trash to prevent space shortage and ultimately running out of business.

So far I've done not that much, did some shitty pixel tiles and sprites and got a simple character controller going, which I still need to improve. But here's a short GIF of what I've done so far!
