LD 41 April 20–23, 2018

GDC Meetup Tuesday, Signups for Ludum Dare 41 open!

Hey folks! I wont be at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this year. That said, I've heard a bunch of you still want to do a meetup. @BradCode (twitter) reached out to me and organized a classic meetup:

This year's Ludum Dare meetup for GDC will be at Tad's Steaks @ 7PM on Tuesday (3/20). Please reply to this post if you can make it so we can get a sense of if we need to call in advance to reserve some space.

Website: http://www.tadssteaks-sf.com/

Again, please reply if you're in San Francisco GDC week and thinking about coming. @BradCode really needs to know how big of a table to get (or the whole upstairs area).

If you haven't been to Tad's before, they are a cafeteria-like Steakhouse. Until GitHub started throwing awesome parties for us, Tad's was our go-to for meetups (they're not far from Moscone and open late).

Thanks again to @BradCode for taking the lead on this.

That's it from me. Have a great time at GDC, and we'll see you all in April.

Themes I've chosen!!

Here are my themes;

  • Running out of resources
  • Every turn has a twist
  • Looking in or out?

I like the last one because(bit of an antidote here) I recently was brushing my teeth and was looking at myself as you do in the mirror, and in my head I said to myself - "Am I looking in...Or...Am I looking out?". Thought it would be a really good theme that would spark some interesting ideas.

I'm iiiin !!!!!

Yeah :D I will participate for the sixth time consecutively to the Ludum Daaaareeeeeyyyy :DDD I hope you will have fun too :D

Do you like these themes?

  1. Synchronization (For example. For some things to work, they have to be in perfect sync. No more, no less)
  2. Where is everyone? (For example. You wake up, no one is there, everyone is gone, what will you do?)
  3. The world without me (For example. Imagine you died, what footprint did you leave? Did it change the flow of life of the wolrd/humanity/aliens?)

I'm in for Ludum Dare 41!

This will be my 3rd participation into this event. I have learned much along the way and I hope it will reflect in my next creation!

Good luck to all and I'm looking forward to play your games!!

Uh... LET'S GO~ again?

Still remember the Rabbits Rain From Above? hehehe, 34 days left... AND I'M IN BOYS... AND GIRLS... alone, again, but hey... hope I don't stuck with the theme again

Getting my foot in for the first time

I'm going for the ludum dare for the first time, hope it goes good. Anyways, would someone please like the post if the theme suggestions are good: 1.) Hide so that no one can seek 2.)What's down? 3.)Nor, weekly neither monthly, it's "minutely"

I'm in for the 3th time

I skipped the prevous LD, but now I'm back to make again some weird javascript game. Good luck for everyone!

In the meantime I developped a free game to be released soon. I don't know if self-promotion is acceptable on this website, but I might post something about it when it will be released ( before the LD I think).

I'm excited!

I've been planning for the event for about a month already! I've already started thinking of practical general game ideas! I've learned a lot, even just during 2018 so far. I am excited to actually publish my first game!

How are the rest of you feeling? Spring's starting to show here, and I'm feeling great!

A New Engine

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Ronan3.png A new Ronan

The main color of St. Patrick's Day is green. you know what's also green? The logo for GameMaker: Studio! GMlogo.png Well, I guess there's also black in there as well..

I want to make my LD41 entry with GameMaker, but that means I'm gonna have to learn it, specifically the GML scripting language. As with Ludum Dare 40 I used a software called Clickteam Fusion 2.5 for my entry. This was something that I regretted with my entry. Even though I know I shouldn't feel bad, it just doesn't feel right using a 'no programming' game engine in a game jam seemingly centered AROUND programming.

Back to GameMaker. I, thankfully, already have some experience with the software and GML, the key word there is 'some'. One thing I'm unsure about is if it's a bad thing to basically RELY on the 'if' statement.

Too Many If's.jpg This is an unfinished code action in the Step event of an enemy object in a simple topdown game, with lots of 'if'

I really don't know so if you do, please tell me so, I honestly feel guilty and even uncomfortable using mainly if statements. Oh! And yes, I am using GameMaker: Studio 1. Why? Because I want to become familiar with that before deciding if I want to switch or not (no pun intended), and plus Studio 2 costs $99 (yes I know there's a free trial but I want to become familiar with Studio 1 beforehand). And I've owned Studio 1 since 2014 (but didn't truly start learning it until 2016)

Also, I want to document my Ludum Dare 41 experience. From the ideas I had for a game, to the ups and downs of the development of my entry, along with other miscellaneous stuff like things that happened in the real world. And finally, submitting the entry and the results, for anyone who doesn't want to bother keeping up with my entry for the entire voting phase. This is HEAVILY inspired by Phil Strahl's Ludum Dare post mortems. Though the result will mostly resemble his LD34 post mortem, since I don't have the tools, and the talent, capable of creating such masterpieces that are his later post mortems.

That might all be a little ambitious to do, but let's just see if it works out or not!

I'm in too - First Ludum Dare

I'm looking forward to my first Jam - or rather we are. We'll be a group of 4-8 people jamming it up together. I'm the only one who already did some small games, the others are non-game programmers or people with some other useful skills.

excitedddd

gonna do it for the very first time! however, won't be the first time i'll be creating a game :p lol

I'm In!

Hey guys, I'm in! This will be my second LDJam. All the best to you guys .

How are these theme suggestions?

These are my theme suggestions: (1) Rube Goldberg - like game (2) You have to cheat to win (3) Deception

Please comment your favourite one below.

I'm in! My first Ludum Dare!

I'm so excited to be doing my very first Ludum Dare! It has always been something I've wanted to do, but I've never got around to it. This time I decided I WILL BE PARTICIPATING. Best of luck to all of you! : )

First Time!!!

I'm so excited to join event! Is my first time do this. I'm not sure if I can handle this, but I will try my best!

A Quick Short Jam

Is anybody here interested in a quick 2 hour jam before LDJam 41? Please reply if you are, as this will only take place if enough of you are interested. Suggestions are welcome.

Here's a quick review of how it'll be like:

The theme will be announced at the beginning. After the two hours, you will have an extra half-hour when you can package up your game and upload it.

Please do tell me if you are interested.

I (should) be in!

April is going to be crazy for me. Especially the week with the LD. During the LD, I'll actually be in 2 game jams at once.

What I'll be using: - Python/Pygame - Beepbox.co/Bosca Ceoil + Audacity - A microphone (and my mouth for SFX) - MS Paint/Px Editor - A level editor with no name
