Explore LD Games!

What are the last games you actually FINISHED ?

Nowadays it's all about memes, short videos, 5 minutes mobiles games, or games that aim to bring a longer experience but that you never get to finish because you enjoy the first items of this list too much.

Somehow, even though we live in this constant chaos of short activities, some games hook you long enough for you to finish them ! I wonder what are those games for you ?

Here is my list. It's very arbitrary and not ordered. Just the last games I happened to finish for random reasons !

Prey - Despite what I heard here and there, I think the gameplay is fun and deep enough for the ~20h I played. But of course the polishing made a huge difference. To me the story and graphics are VERY nice. Difficulty was just on point for me. I still listen to the OST sometimes. I played without any powers so I might try again using them (replay value). I might be a bit biased because I know one of the artists who also worked on Dishonored 2, but I don't think so honestly. I didn't finish Dishonored 2 and probably won't.

Out There Omega - Ok I'm a SciFi nerd ^^'. What I really loved about that game is the rogue-like mechanic combined with the storytelling. At first you don't understand anything about the story so you don't know how to react to the situations, a bit like FTL but there is a strong main storyline here. So it's not only isolated events, a lot of them are connected together. The consequence is that even if you never encountered an event, you can still find the right answer if you know enough about the big picture. Sometimes events are just puzzles in disguise about math, science or music. If you never played that game and try to beat it, just don't expect too much of the end scene. It's barely and end scene.

War for the Overworld - Not the best game, but I was just too nostalgic of Dungeon Keeper! Also it was very polished, and easy, to a point it was even relaxing. At some point I hesitated to make a game like this so I wanted to experiment more with the mechanics. I still think there is some potential for something more exciting and fresh.

Pony Island - Now this one could be on top of the list. Short, fun, fresh, and surprising. Also breaking the forth wall here and there. With a little bit of challenge but not too much. The kind of game I really love.

Braid - Too obvious to explain. Very "portaly". The kind of game I aim to make (I enjoy teaching complex concepts). I'll probably never succeed but I'll try !

Thanks!!!

Big thanks to all of you who decided to try out our game and give us your great suggestions.

We are really happy with our result on our first ludum dare try: 1000th!!

You can now play the final post-ludum dare version of our game that we just published.

https://xgopal.itch.io/heaven-and-earth-post-ludum-dare-version

See you at the 42nd Ludum Dare! :)

Do these ideas have potential?

Firstly, sorry for the pun.

What do you think about a new category for ratings, "Potential"? I.e., how much potential does the game have? How good/better would it (probably) be if it was developed into a full game? In other (LD-oriented) words, how better could it get if there was more time?

What made me think about this is the fact that people (me included) frequently don't manage to get many (amazing!1!!) features into the game. This would give us a sense of whether it's worth to keep working on the game. Yes, there's feedback for that -- but think how cool it would be (or not?) to see the games with the most potential!

Going further, are there any other (non-redundant) categories you think it would be nice to add? Progression (whether difficulty increases gradually), Gameplay, ...? We could have optional categories -- maybe hidden by default or so when rating, so people don't get overwhelmed -- that don't affect Ratings given/received. Also, the description of the categories could be shown somehow (in fact, this is independent of the discussion in this post).

Lastly, changing the subject: would it be interesting to have some measure of dispersion in the results for each category?

Sorry if some or all of this have already been discussed and I missed it.

Share your thoughts on what's good and what's terrible! :speakinghead:

RoadRover V0.2 UPDATE

135f1.jpg

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/roadrover

A combination between shooter and racing games. The initial concept was RocketLeague, I took the idea and had some idea to it, the game went through a project creep, but it is more than I expected. You are a car that can shoot plasma projectiles and you are chased by enemy car which are spawned by factories, this mode is only survival (couldn’t do much because of the time). RoadRover is 6-minute game, so please engage and have some fun.

UPDATE 1 June 2018 // [Change Log V0.2]: - Removed the annoying DepthOfField. - Fixed Bugs. - Tweaked the enemy factories instantiation timeout, and add a Timed Destruction to the factories. - Improved some of the lights.

Thanks for the support and advices… Stay tuned for more updates…

Goodnight Meowmie Final Version (2.03) Update

screenshotem1/emsmaller.png

@xellaya and I have been hard at work over the past month on the post-jam version of Goodnight Meowmie, adding new features, new animations and artwork, extra events, and a significantly different ending sequence. We're proud to announce that we are finally finished with the project and are ready to share it with the world! This game means a lot to us and we would really appreciate it if you could give it a try.

I've also been busy writing up a full post-mortem writeup (sorry that it's taken so long). I'll post about that when it's finished as well.

My long overdue Post-Mortem for LD41

Hello everyone! I've been kind of silent recently on the site. I've kind of burnt myself out on Game Dev and I've returned to my "I'll do it tomorrow" phase (however long that will last). However I've felt the need to write and share my views on my experience during LD41. It's a long one, so, here it goes!

Prep

While I didn't feel as hyped and crazed about this LD than my last and first one. I still was pretty damn pumped and wanted to make it as smooth of an experience at possible. Just like last time, I drew up a schedule. By the way, I recommend most people to make schedules so you don't get tunnel-visioned on one part of your game. Anyway, I noticed from the last LD that while my Saturdays went smoothly, my Sundays were hectic and I constantly ignored the schedule. So I changed up my plan a bit to give myself a bit more freedom and polish during the final hours.

Theme Voting began, I shared my views, slaughtered some themes, -1'd like 95% of the final themes aaand bedtime. Since in the UK we get the theme at 2am I'd rather wake up to the theme than kill myself in bed over it. So, to bed I went.

Saturday

I awoke and my worst nightmare came into fruition. Two Incompatible Genres. sigh, I went and began brainstorming 6am in the morning. I went through, Spy and Action, Platformer and God, Potion Platformer etc. until it hit me, a card/ sports game!!!! (even though I ended up making more a platformer/ card game :p). Just like last time I went out and bought some "supplies", donuts, toffee, pizza, pepsi... yeah, you get the point. Hey, I might as well add some flavour to the competition (pun intended). Over some epic beats from Super Paper Mario I began working on the base of the game. LD41.gif This is where I could instantly feel progression from my last Ludum Dare. Unlike last time I finally properly figured out the Unity UI systems, using Arrays to store and use objects and enums (I love enums). Just like last time I felt confident. By the end of the day, I felt confident, I had both of the enemies done, Had most of my tiles done and at that point (I thought) I was practically finished with the base of the game. LD 41 png.PNG

Sunday, where things started to go wrong

I awoke, happy and ready. I was basically done! All I have to do know is just add a few more levels and... oh, the player is sticking to that wall, well that's fine! I'll just add a physics material on it and then... oh, now he's sliding everywhere. Uhh, I'll just spend half an hour re-learning how to do friction in script (even though it's literally only one line of code).

Yeah, as you may be able to tell, this is where my lack of knowledge of platformer games caught up with me. I've never done a platformer before, let alone had to deal with the the emotional obligation of finishing one! I had little to no knowledge on:

  • Tilemaps
  • Jumping physics
  • Friction
  • Prefabs

Ouch. Something hurt me at one point... The realisation that LD40 had just repeated itself... Just like LD40 I came in confident, that I already was at the top of my game. While the theme was unexpected I still came up with a concept I was happy with in a short amount of time. It started of happy and jolly, though with some learning to do. However, as Sunday rolled in and my arch nemesis "polish" and "user friendliness" knocked on the door, I rushed, I hurried and, well, I eventually realised that I would not work on the game after the Jam. History had repeated itself.

Funnily enough, while writing this, I went back to my code and, Oh God, it's not pretty. Very few scripts are commented and many are using redundant code. Here are some examples! Code.png

Code 3.png

Urch. Needless to say, in the last few hours were sad, depressing and thoughts of what could have been...

Now, Today!

Results came in aaand... Results.png

Right, you may be thinking, "Oh Nutty, you don't sound too proud", oh yeah?! Well look at this graph baby!! Graphs.png Now that's what I call progress! If I left out the Humour and Mood category (like I originally intended) the Proper Overall would've been higher but that's fine!

What Now?

Well I've been working on a new game since the LD Jam! Have a look at the current pre-pre-pre alpha! Pre pre pre alpha.png Funilly enough, it IS a platformer. It will probably be done in around 2 months but I've learnt a LOT with this game so far.

  • Prefabs (thank God)
  • Tilemaps
  • Raycasts
  • Friction
  • Jump Physics

I love LD Jams, I hope Mums doesn't plan our obligatory holiday during the next Jam (I'll try and swerve the date if possible) since I WILL try and compete next time round. I always love seeing what you guys made and are doing now, it's great to see that so many people are willing to put themselves through such a gruelling and challenging task. Anyway, I'll stop writing here. This has been quiet a thing to type (think it's been an hour). Have a good day people, until next time! :)

Guerrilla Gardening - Post-Jam Update

https://youtu.be/5vQTrTkmd14

The first post-jam update to Guerrilla Gardening is now available to play on itch.io!

I got a lot of great feedback from my fellow Ludumites, and I couldn't wait to polish up my entry and make it the best that it could be. This update includes:

  • Succulent, bouncy strawberries!
  • A new enemy type and improved enemy behaviour
  • 3 difficulty levels to try
  • New gritty, grimy, and animated, background art
  • Clearer notification system to tell you when plants are thirsty or under attack
  • Full controller support

...as well as too many other tweaks and fixes to recount!

I hope you enjoy the update - more will be coming in a few months time, including a new narrative focus for the game, deeper farming mechanics and a more expansive world to explore. You can follow the development on itch, on my twitter, or anywhere else linked from my website.

Thanks so much to everybody who played my game during the jam and gave such great feedback, and congratulations to everybody who took part. See you in August for LD42!

*closed* [FEATURE REQUEST] Password Changing Option

I would greatly appreciate it if I was able to change my password. Currently, I am not, and the password I am using currently is starting to bug me. Changing username would be cool too, and it goes in the same category. I feel like most sites I visit that use a password allow me to change it, and so this site missing that feature feels weird and a little insecure. Please heart this post to get the website developers to notice!

Last chance to support CornWars on IGG!

Hey there thought I'll share this a last time... There are only a few days left! Would love if you would help us by sharing the link or even backing the campaign :)

This is our current project, originating from LD41, on kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fsedarkalex/cornwars-the-farming-shooter-game

It is a mix of farming sim and shooter game... Sounds strange? We prefer uncommon :p You need to plant seeds and sell the fruit to be able to buy better seeds, weapons and pay your taxes. Oh! Wait! Weapons? YES! They are… like… Uncommon tools for farming..? Want to learn more? Head over to our kickstarter!

Goodnight Meowmie Comprehensive Post-Mortem Writeup

This took forever because I rambled on so long about so many different aspects of the game, but I've finally finished writing up the post-mortem for our LD41 game, Goodnight Meowmie. I included a report on how the jam went, thoughts on the design and narrative of the game, and even some implementation details.

The post-mortem is way too long to post on the LDJam site -- instead, you can view it on my personal website here: http://ddrkirby.com/games/goodnight-meowmie/post-mortem.html

my first LD commentary

it's been a month + since the LD, but I just want to shout out to all the people who played my game and rated and give me comments. I did the game in less than the 3 days period because sleep and I worked 2 shifts on my job... and then after that i basically started a new job so I'm glad i had a little lD experience.

I prob won't do another LD for a loong while but cheers to everyone making games and internet stranger on rest of your life.

Building Buildings released!

My second project as an independent interactive-digital-media developer has been released.

It is a puzzle about building buildings, would you have guessed?

Try it out, if you have the time.

Cheers!

PS.
Already working on the third project.

VoxelCode is Up and Running!!!

VoxelCode is a script-based voxel editor. It is written in pure javascript!

https://youtu.be/b_nEmBEuhWw

Over the past 6 months I really wanted to code a 3D modeling program of my own. VoxelCode maybe not exactly what I set out to do, but I have had lots of fun developing it and I am very happy with how it turned out! Please give it a try and let me know how you like it! I think it will work great for making art assets for Ludum Dare! I'm hoping y'all will use this in future game jams! I know I will!

BTW VoxelCode is open source and available on GitHub: https://github.com/kippllo/VoxelCode

If you just want to try it and not dive into the source code here is a link to the official website running the app: https://kippllo.github.io/VoxelCode/

I'd love to see what you make with it, so please if you do use it let me know @ VoxelCode@gmail.com

Alakajam #3

Hi folks,

Just a quick heads-up that the 3rd Alakajam kicks off in less than 20 hours! It has a similar structure to Ludum Dare, although we differentiate between solo and team entries in the 48h jam, in addition to the more relaxed 72h unranked category.

A very late post-jam update of my first ludum dare entry

It's been more than a year already when I first joined Ludum Dare. So I decided to overhaul my LD 38 entry Statera.

Before I still can't create my own 3d assets so I joined the jam. The entire game looked ridiculous back then. Now I changed the previous assets to my own design.

Screenshot (104).png

Previous species:

Slimes

Rabbits

Rhinos

New species:

Treants

Carabaos

Astrals

Previous Version:

2018 Version:

https://youtu.be/V1BZhP0g_iU

Screenshot (106).png

Major Changes:

Treant Seeds

The bullets are now treant seeds. They have a 55% chance of spawning a treant. I did this because some of the feedback I received back then said that the controls felt arbitrary. Now they have their own more specific purposes.

Outline

No one actually asked for this but it helps you see the other entities on the other side of the planet.

Two Worlds

The first world is normal level. It only includes treants and carabaos

The second world is hard level. It includes treants, carabaos, and astrals. You need to last 5 minutes on the normal difficulty to unlock this.

Smaller World

I made the world smaller to make the game easier and to prevent performance throtling.

This is also to give the players more control over the species, since rapid population growths are now on a smaller scale.

Theorem (summer sale)

Hello friends. Waiting the next LudumDare in a few weeks, you can play my game Theorem - a solid puzzle game. It is available on Itch.io and Steam for less than one buck (summer sale). So take a look at the video on Steam which shows all about the gameplay. Don't forget to leave a comment. I really appreciate any help so as to promote Theorem. I wish you the best. See you later. JSCF – Ludum Dare 2D game engine that I kept working on

So I’ve been working on JSCF for a while on my own and wanted to get some feedback but mostly help from you good JS developers out there. I’ve been using early early prototypes of it for my last two entries Catapult & Powerless. Since then it changed A LOT but I thought I’d come back to the place that got me the idea to start a lightweight canvas and native JS (and CanvasInput.js) only library – JSCF. Currently in development but you can get a prototype build on github:

Been awhile...

Checking in, how's everyone doing?

I've been refining my skills since the end of LD41, I feel I can do better but never truly show off what I'm capable of, LD42 will be the one I shine on.

Good early luck my dudes amd dudn'ts!

It's Almost Here!

Can't wait until Ludum Dare starts! This will be my third one. I hope my game this time will be better than my last 2. Good Luck everyone!

Finished my first Lundum Dare

Somehow I managed to scope my game too low, even though I thought I wouldn't finish.

After 1800 lines of code over about 18 waking hours, I was done.

LundumDare41TextTowerDefenseSmall.png

Any Australians/New Zealanders looking to team up?

I'm a Unity programmer that made this in LD41.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/forest-grow

I'm trying to find someone to do the next Jam with me. I live in Sydney and would prefer to work someone in a similar timezone.

I'm in!!!

I am so excited about Ludum Dare 42! Can't wait to see the theme :D

My tools: /engine - GM8/ /graphics - Aseprite/ /music - FLS [ drumkit: Bitkit; synth: Sylenth1 ]/ /sounds - (s/b)fxr/ /pen and paper/ /Tiled (depending on game type)/

Im in, i guess

this is my first time but i dont know if i would be able to submit a game but ill try

I'm in!

Keeping my fingers crossed for an abstract theme with many interpretations...

I'm planning another solo submission, using Unity, Inkscape and mtPaint. I'll use Tiled if it's appropriate, and won't if it isn't. :)

Let's all do our best!

Almost Forgot

Wow time flew by since the last Ludum Dare, so I totally forgot it's that time of year again! Shame I can't be at any meetups in my city, but for some reason, my solo LD entries are way better than anything I do with a team, so whatever.

Really hope I can improve my games even further since LD41 with all experience I got from converting Greenspawn Restaurant -- my quite successful LD41 entry -- from a little browser thingy into a full Steam release (that, sadly, nobody bought, so maybe some of you will check it out).

So, here's what I'll use this time:

  • Engine: Unity (although, I'm tempted to try RPG Maker, but that'll depend on a theme)
  • IDE: Visual Studio
  • Visuals: Aseprite for sprites (possibly Blender, if the theme is really tempting to go 3D, but I doubt, I'll be able to make 3D look good in 2 days)
  • Audio: Audacity, sfxr and Bosca Ceoil

Pretty common stuff, but hey, if it ain't broke, why fix it? Good luck everyone!

Not Sure

I REALLY doubt I'll be able to participate in LD42 unfortunately. The internet connection on my PC is acting up, but on the other hand it works fine on my phone.

I guess I'll say which theme I hope wins, and which one I dread , sort of. Those two themes are 3 Rules and It's spreading respectively.

I still hope L4D2- I mean, LD42 is a blast for you all! Goodbye

Space Drift Squad on Steam!

Hello fellow game devs! I wanted to tell you all that I released my very first game on Steam!! I am very happy and excited about that. It is called Space Drift Squad.

ssemendless/em2.jpg

The game is a shoot'em up with local coop up to 4 players with 2 game modes: Endless Mode and Defense Mode. In the Endless Mode, you and your friends can discover the outer space for as long as the squad can survive. In the Defense Mode, an asteroid rain will destroy the Earth and you and your Squad need to destroy the most asteroids possible and eliminate an alien menace that is willing to eradicate our species.

Game Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyCSd2Nm6Sk

I participated in the LD40 and LD41 and now I am very excited about LD42. I have an idea in mind that I think that would be very fun to implement. Hope the themes I voted win 😅

Good luck everyone!

We are in!

We are going to be doing LD42!

I'm in... number 2!

My second ludum dare, and the theme is anounced at a somewhat eu friendly time! Bring it on!

I'm in again!

Fifth LD for me! Working in Unity, with Photoshop, Bosca Ceoil and BFXR as asset creation tools. Good luck everyone who joins, and lets have some fun!

Start of day 2

My idea is to make a game where your phone is running out of space and you need to keep it from running out of space, but you keep getting emails and texts with videos and images which you need to delete while keeping an eye on your space left! Today I need to finish the email menu and get notifications working. Also everyone remember to take breaks every once and a while!

Have you played "The Hero's incredible Chronicles" ?

178bf.png

If you do it you'll discover an amazing story with the best gameplay ever created in a ludum dare :) What are you waiting for ?

DETRITUS: Thoughts & My Personal Postmortem

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uME02Tb0n18
Link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/detritus

This was my fourth successful Ludum Dare, and the second where I spent more time doing art and shader witchery than I did general gameplay programming. There were a lot of ups and downs, though mostly ups and I wanted to go through them.

Pre-Production is Good!
Friday started with us almost doubling the amount of time we spent in "Pre-Production". We really struggled with this theme, it was literally the theme we wanted to see the least, and there was a lot of back and forth. We settled on the concept of a space shooter action game (A first for our team, we never do any action typey games), and began to immediately scope out out possibility space. We had a very firm set of well scoped goals for the game, and met every single one of them.

Jury Duty is Bad!
Okay, so it's important and the foundation of the legal system, but it could not have come at a worse time! We lost 1/3rd of our team for the entire day and part of the night before so they could sleep and wake up early. I had to stay up for 36 hours to fill the manpower gap, and am still recovering from that decision a week later.

Polish is Fun!
Polish is something we /never/ get to do, we've generally only had what you might call "Gameplay" within the last few hours of the jam, but by the end of Saturday our core gameplay was pretty feature complete. I got to spend an excessive amount of time on nailing down our look and feel, having a heavy hand in bringing my vision of a bright, saturated universe to life without overwhelming the player. I probably spent 1/3rd of my time tweaking particles, another 1/3rd on textures and models, and the last just getting the AI code and last minute gameplay additions online.

Walking away pleased is a good feeling
I usually walk away from a jam feeling like there was so much left to do, and that I didn't perform as well as I was hoping, but with this one I really enjoyed the game, and invest a ridiculous amount of time playing it. It's a game I will pick up and play randomly through the week, and enjoy myself while doing it. I'm happy with what we accomplished, and that's a good feeling.

I've come a long way!
There's a lot I could criticize about the art. I don't like the Dragon model, it was rushed, and looks rushed. I think if I had more time I could have done a better job on the textures, and some of the particles, especially for the engine, are missing some of the details I wanted to do. That said: I could not have done this last year, I could not have even come close: I need to remind myself that there's always room to improve, but I've come very far, very fast.

Jams let me make games, not just game
In my day to day work I'm a contractor game dev, and for what feels like an eternity I've been working on a singular, GAME. Day to day this is pretty exhausting, getting caught up in the minutia, feeling like the project is neverending, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel, despite being in the middle of the world's longest crunch cycle. It's good to cleanse my palatte and make games, not just game.

Feel free to give it a play, and I'll be continuing to play games throughout the week when I can find the time.

Do you want to be a Capybara?

Stepping stones - Post-compo work started!

After some time, I've finally finished the first polish steps for the post-compo version of Stepping Stones). Now, instead of the original rectangles for the ground, I created a basic dungeon tileset inspired by Zelda games. Also, following players' feedback, I've "broken" a bit the smaller tiles, to make them more revealing.

Here's a screenshot of v0.0.2 (Temporary link): lv2-after.PNG

For contrast, this is the compo version (You can play it and rate it here) lv2-before.PNG

It's still not perfect and there are lots of improvements I could add there, but at least it looks way better now IMO.

My next steps include adding music, reworking the main character and then I'm torn between adding tile animations or start thinking of more levels and gameplay features to add (key/lock systems, teleporters, etc)

I won't be updating the downloadable or web versions on Itch.io until the rating finishes, after that I'll swap the links.

I'm in solo this time around

In honor of my busy teammates working on their bachelor degrees, I decided that this weekend I will ignore my own responsibilities (come and get me!) and create something that will demonstrate how much I need them for LD 44.

Challenge 1: Two days.

Challenge 2: My own sound.

Challenge 3: My own art.

Challenge 4: Simplicity with a twist or endless replayability.

Easy mode: opt out of original sound/art

(Honestly, how hard can it be - mark my last words)

Currently hoping to learn Stencyl enough to not be frustrated by everything. For music I plan to play with Beepbox and for art I'll try Piskel.

Let's see what happens when a game designer goes on a solo quest!

I'm in!

Feeling a little apprehensive about some of the potential themes, but that's all part of the challenge. Good luck everyone, and enjoy the weekend!

Waiting for the theme!!!

This is my second time in LD, but the last I could not finish  This time I have more experiece doing video games, I really want to do it! I'm very excited!!!LudumDare_43.png

Missing this one :(

I'll have to pass up on this one, since I have a flight right in the middle of the whole thing. See you in April people!

My Progress

I have an labyrinth and enemy patrol script. When enemy saw player, player have to sacrifice one of his abilities to revive. Player has 3 abilities: Shoot, Dash and Cloak (Be Invisible).

Enemies are cubes, labyrinth created via ProBuilder (i learned on the fly, i havent used before. i will not learn anything in future jams. i know it was a bad idea). I'm planning to design a couple more levels, improve enemy system and create better UI. Good luck everyone !

My results for LD43

Even though I have reached highers scores with my previous Compo entry, this time I was able to get top 100 in all categories. Investing and learning a little more in graphics and audio was really my goal this time. And well, considering my previous scores on those categories that's a clear success.

I don't know what happened with Humor though. Really. I don't know. I wasn't really able to work the intro and ending as I wanted and tried to simplify things with humor instead. I guess having voice acting really makes people laugh, heh.

The return

Hey been a while still making games I have a Good one coming soon if anyone care that much but this is my itch.io page https://poundthegroundgames.itch.io/

LD: The one game jam to rule them all

I’m in! After my last exciting game jam (The Discord Jam done in the LD Discord) I am very excited for this one! I feel like I’ve been improving every game jam so far (2nd in the Discord Jam :O https://itch.io/jam/discord-jam1/rate/380039) so I am very keen to see how the big bad LD treats me this time around. I’ll try and be streaming the whole event over at twitch.tv/craaazysteeeve so follow me over there if you want to watch me devolve into insanity over 48 hours haha. See you all out there this weekend!

How I made VERY simple animations for Trashwars to survive the jam

When you start your jam game, you actually start with nothing. It took us a few hours to get a good idea, than decided on the game elements, @kazrath went to coding and I started to sketch the initial design.

We wanted to have little bots fighting each other, and I knew that I had two choices for character design and animation. A - to give the robots wheels so I can skip animation entirely or B - to make different type of walking robots

I choose option B because I am an idealist and I wanted to create the best! So instead of these little "cars", I ended up with these guys:

ideatodesign.png

They are more fun, they have personalities, BUT they need actual animation work.

Using an animation tool like Spine or DragonBones can help you with complex stuff, animating between keyframes. It is almost always faster than animating every frame by hand. I could export my assets and use an animation tool to create bones and fluent animations. But I still had so much to and setting skeletons and animating seemd too much now. So I was looking for an easier solution (and we did this so many times during those 72 hours) Now I am usually drawing in vector, namely in Inkscape. It is very easy to design and modify anything in it and I love this freedom and flexibility.

So I used Inkscape to create the absolute minimum of walk cycles for these robots. First you draw your robot, than you pose it. You can set the pivot points in Inkscape, so you can set up your own joints. Than you create a duplicate and pose it again. Than again. Bang, you are done!

I still wanted to keep things very simple, so I could not make a very complex walk cycle for each droids. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but each of them has a bit different type of locomotion.

The first ones have human like legs, the 2nd move on short legs with no knees, and the 3rd ones have 3 visible legs on this side and move like caterpillars. I was looking at walk cycles, made sketches, and walked with my fingers on the table a lot to understand how these will work and look natural. (can you say that for small droids?)

After a few trials and error I ended up with this:

trashwars walk gif.gif

In the final game we had to set the animation speed to the movement speed in Unity a good few times, but the movements are fluid enough, and the droids are actually working! And they only consist of 3 frames each! After all I could spare a lot of time by creating very simple frame-by-frame animation. It seems counterintuitive, but if you make only a few frames it works very well!

If you want to see our droids in action, check out Trashwars here:

U27RA R3Z0NANC3 open Alpha

Howdy guys, I hope you are doing great.

Right now I am working on a post-jam prototype (not LD) for a game I made some time ago and I need your help. The game is in Alpha stage and I need as much feedback as possible, especially with the learning curve (where and how you find the most trouble). Any help is deeply appreciated. Warning, the difficulty escalates quickly😅.

Here is the link for the game - https://dumivid.itch.io/u27ra-r3z0nanc3

And a short trailer. I hope it will entertain you a bit.

63 Little Pieces (Early Access) Windows & OUYA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9hbiS1IHFI

Get 63 Little Pieces - here.

63 Little Pieces is an atmospheric block sliding puzzle game with a shooting mechanic, to destroy walls, in order to build a path to lead one or several blocks to the goal. Slide, fire, destroy blocks, collect collectibles, hit switches and manage the other blocks movements.
Will you be able to piece it back together?

The final game will consist of 60 or so levels. Each level contains 3 distinct puzzle challenges:

Collect the collectible; reach the goal in as less moves and less destruction as possible.

Originally created in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 41 in 2018, as a mix between Puzzle and Shoot'em Up mechanics. Things moved nicely but, gameplay wise, there was little to no puzzle action at all. It was only after the jam I put real thought into the project and have been working on it ever since.

With real thought put into the puzzles, I started tinkering around with what I had and started to making conclusions on how the game should proceed from that point. I didn't want to have an one and done puzzle solving mechanic nor a 3 star rating system. With that said, each puzzle is now build upon 3 distinctive objectives: Collect the collectible, reach the goal with as less moves as possible and reach the goal with as less destruction as possible. Some levels can even be finished without achieving any of those objectives.

From Ludum Dare 41 to Now (Early Access):

  • From the 13 unpolished presented levels there are now 18 puzzles with 3 challenges each, awaiting your cunning eye.
  • Graphics were upgraded (still work in progress) from the still included pixelated black & white sprites (so if you're into that 1 bit sort of retro visual thing - it's still there) to a coloured 2.5 or 2D top down view.
  • Although repetitive, the silent background is now filled with one music track.
  • Narrative is still in "draft mode"; it is fully implemented but not presented to the player yet.
  • The project now includes XBOX 360 controller support.
  • Many bugs and half baked mechanics fixed (since it was a prototype).

Right now my main focus is on building the levels.

Early Access applies to Windows and OUYA, if you still have one it can be sideloaded and played there. Also considering bringing it to Linux, but no promises.

Stay inside, stay safe, and have fun!

Happy Children's Day!
