Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Things that got left out of scope

LD52 is almost over and I'm happy with my first COMPO game. But things got left out of scope, here are some:

  • Currently there is no win or lose condition, the endgame is something I didn't had in top priority, as the game itself is the main focus
  • Fruit decay, if you leave your fruit unharvested they will decay
  • Fertilizer, I was going to add a tool for fertilizer which is not free that would passively increase the quality of the fruit
  • Better tree generation... this is a big one, I sepnt too much time on friday working on the trees, should have moved forward with the game itself, but yeah.
  • Buyable upgrades, had some ideas for this, but the micromanagement is still very cool sshot3.png

Petra Rabbit's Carrot Chase is Signed Sealed and Delivered!

Wait... deliver is the theme. Oh well it was to hard to come up with a harvest pun for the title. For those of you that are like me and enjoyed Captain Toads Treasure Tracker you in for a short (but hopefully sweet) treat.

Druid's House Finished!

Wow, what a rush. Every moment it was me thinking of something I wanted to add, but knowing there wasn't time for that (maybe a post-jam update). It was a lot of fun and helped me a lot to get back to my gamedev hobby. Good luck to everyone, I hope that you managed to make the base of what you dreamed of. GameJams are like that, and they are an experience of chaos and love.

My FIRST GAME - Seed your Weed - is out

Amazing challenge to finish game in 48 hours. I hope you will have fun during playing my game. Enjoy!

Done :)

Finally done :) Ended up with a combine harvester horror game. Considering how much I hated this theme I'm pretty happy with this one.

Finally some progress!

After starting basically 24 hours late, I finally committed to an idea that involves physics-based mouse controls and dash attacks. You can deploy harvesters that follow you until they detect nearby resource clusters. Then they'll latch on to the cluster and harvest from it, granting you resource that you can use for abilities. This is all placeholder art, but I've got most of the mechanics in place, finally.

Harvesting "Harvesting Simulator" Simulator is on!

I’m sure we’re gonna playtest too many farming Simulator games this jam… Have a break and harvest some farming simulator developers and enjoyers!

You play as the Grim Reaper controlling a harvester machine puppet. Harvest as many farming simulator developers and enjoyers you can while avoiding the bombs.

Enjoy!

Didn't make it for the Compo sadly...

I think I'm gonna leave it unfinished this time, as there is simply no way I could finish the game. I could've gone for the Jam but I don't think I could salvage that either way, plus I'm a Compo purist anyway. At least it works on a real Famicom, and I got a priceless picture out of it to boot! 20230109_042051.jpg

Either way, I still had a lot of fun in doing LD as always, and surprisingly I'm not even mad about not finishing in time. I guess it's just the way LD goes and I ought to have experienced that once in my LD career :P

Here's the link to the game in case you wanna see how it ended up. It's obviously not finished and not very playable, but I didn't want it to go to waste. I've also added the source code in true LD fashion to check the inner workings of the game. Who knows, maybe you could finish it :D

Personal recap for LD #52

  • Hanging out with the #ldjam mastodon community here was amazing✨
  • First time Godot: We got along so well - it's love on first sight❤️
  • Finally got into pixel art with #aseprite - and #godot should be jealous ❤️
  • Kept the game small. Was done with the core after <24h. Second day was for iterations, SFX, VFX and Music
  • Each night 8-10h of sleep + Naps 💤🎼 + healthy nutrition🥦
  • Nice mushy brain from all the focus - but not stressed at all.

Happy as a undefined 🦄 on a 🌈

Made it in, just under the wire. Something a little different ;)

Instead of going the usual farm harvesting route, or even the second most popular soul harvesting route. I went a little darker, and did BODY HARVESTING. You're a mad scientist and all you want to do is create a monster. However body parts are very hard to come by these days, so you have to scavange through your local cemetery for body parts. Take them back to your laboratory and chop them up and combine them to create, YOUR VERY OWN MONSTER. cue lightning and flashing lights.

You can play it on itch.io now! https://forevertrash.itch.io/bodyharvest

Hope everyone had fun and had great luck with their games, i'll be spending all week playing them! For now though, goodnight, 35 hours of no sleep, but totally worth it to make compo!

Published !

illu.png Managed to publish my game !

The last rush was hard but manage to make this image in less than 5 minutes !

Game is playable but a lot of audio is missing... I'll have to train for the next jams.

Web export was a bit tricky with Godot 4 and i have a big lag on launch...

But overall Godot is really nice to work with during jam !

It was fun !!

I found a cool youtube video to create chicken sound at the last moment, saved me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8T80Eur8DI

Finished My First LDJAM

This was my first Ludum Dare. Making a game in 48 hours was a challenge, but it was a great experience. I made a farming-simulator that has tower defence mechanics. On another note, I've finally released a game, having a time constraint meant I didn't spend lots of time on useless features and had to really focus on the core of the game.

Fruit Picker is published

Come and join the exciting world of seasonal fruit picking with some simple physics puzzles(mostly stacking stuff). Also there are ducks. https://harmadillo.itch.io/fruit-picker

First compo published!

Breakdown of the past 48 hours...

Try to think of something other than farming: 4 hours

Make a level editor: 8 hours

Make cars drive on a road : 24 hours. Pictured above is what I tried to avoid.

Sleep: 8 hours

Make an actual game out of it: 4 hours

Can't say that was ideal, but it's done, and in the nick of time!

Time to see what everyone else has been up to now!

Definitely over ambitious with this project...

Wasn't expecting a game jam in January but I wanted to do something simple since it caught me off guard, and I started late. Around 8hrs into development and it's going to definitely be in the extras category. I really like the idea and I think it could be a pretty solid game with more content and more development even after the game jam but it's going to take some time to start off with even a base. I'm going for a exploration/atmospheric type genre, here's the unperfected art style clip1.PNG clip2.PNG

the shapes are live!!

First ever Compo and just about made it in under the time! (...I did think it ended at 11pm though. cue panicked exporting of game)

Anyway, we have shapes:

We have colours:

screenshot-3.png

We have a bit that my playtesters said looked like the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey:

screenshot-4.png

Play it now: https://binneygames.itch.io/shape-orchard

Can't wait to see what everyone else has made, the other posts look super exciting!!

Failing compo

I've also failed to do the compo. I only started halfway through Saturday and my custom engine wasn't particularly ready for the heat of a game jam yet.
