THEME! Please dont be sh*t

Hello People! We, Zyap谋m Studios are competing in ANOTHER Ludum Dare! Our last project was a failure we made that in the last 50 minutes because our game The Squezy Quiezy was corrupted. :C

We hope the theme will be better this time. 馃槕.

Some people asked are y'all kids? And the answer is yes.

The theme...

I know it will be shitNCm82jXSpYIKdCoXpkbq_A32iKbDlBKq-m4XbQg78OE.pnggif-king-81ce5e3d07153d8dddf3f06ef09c3543.gif

Tips for Ludum Dare for newcomers!

Hello everyone! Welcome to Ludum Dare, most of you will be participating for the first time this Ludum Dare so here is some tips and tricks!

1) Don't Overshoot!

Most newcomers think you have to make a triple A 2 hour story title with cyperpunk graphics but no! The most important thing is keeping it simple. Here is my range:

Flappy Bird to Slender The 8 Pages

The simplicity does not matter.

2) Time is Key!

If you spend 12 hours finding a theme and another 12 making a prototype, its not going to be easy to finish the game. The first three ideas you come up with are probably the best ones. Pick one! Make your protype and DO NOT TRY TO LEARN A NEW GAME ENGINE WHILE PARTICIPATING!

3) Get sleep. just get sleep

Although 13 Monster cans can help with sleeping, the best thing that reduces sleepiness is sleeping. If you really don't want to sleep then atleast sleep for 4-6 hours. It is important. Even more important for people who go to school like me.

Most importantly have fun. You probably are not going to win but.... winning is not the point! Have Fun! Make great games!

I'm in, again.

It's gonna be my 8th LD Jam. For once I am hoping the theme does not suck. There is also a theme I'm dreading as it's very similar to a project I am working on.

I hope everyone has a nice LD, and for the love of god, don't make games that the user has to compile to play.

Here is some tips that I usually follow:

  • Do NOT switch engines half way through development. ahem
  • Do NOT use an engine/framework you have never used before, always use what you are most comfortable with.
  • Do NOT let others tell you what engine/framework is good for you, if you like Unity, GameMaker, Construct, Plain C or even scratch, use that one. No one engine is superior to any other engine.
  • Do NOT have sleepless nights. Yes that one feature needs to be completed at this once, but it is not more important than your sleep schedule!
  • Do NOT make a game that is too ambitious, Ludum Dare has always been about making a game in a short time, not about making the next big thing in a short time. You might want to make the next GTA, but keep in mind, you have 48/72 hours to do it!
  • Talk to people about your progress. Trust me, no one will steal your idea when you talk about how your game is going.
  • Actually work on your game. This is sadly something I've not done in the past, I have avoided working on the game in almost every LD. If you have free time, work on your game.
  • Finally and most importantly, have fun! LD is all about having fun while making a game. Unnecessary stress and the urge to be competitive might ruin your entire experience!

Good luck and have fun everyone!

We need advice.

Hello, I am part of a game studio and we work in Unreal Engine 5. We usually create games with very realistic graphics and that is usually performance heavy. We want to stick to what's familiar to us and make our jam game realistic.

However, the dilemma comes from the fact that this is very performance heavy, and the download size will be significantly bigger than an average jam game.

Should we instead try to aim for a more cartoony and stylised to ensure more people can play our game?

We don't particularly care about winning or being popular. We just want to have another game under our belt.

Any advice?
