Prepare for Ludum Dare 45

Less than 40 days to go now! I thought I would re-post this video, hopefully it can provide some inspiration and ideas while waiting and preparing for Ludum Dare 45 =) The video is particularly aimed towards those of you who have never tried Ludum Dare, but maybe it can be of some use even for seasoned participants.

LD45 will be my 10th consecutive event. Originally I wanted to participate ONCE to see what it was like. That was LD36. Now I just can't stop - and I don't want to stop for that matter.

Get your tools ready and take care everyone!

Let's not die this time.

Hey all, it's me Nutty. The last time I was here was during the build up to LD44. I believe what happened is that I actually got the theme I wanted, however I couldn't get anywhere with my idea. Tried to come up with something else and physically couldn't, well - I gave up. But not this time!! >:( I'm going to beat this challenge like it's a fucking boss fight!

This is my 5th LD Compo and as always I come in with newfound experience and knowledge.

Sad news about my last entry, um... it died. I was working so damn hard on it, months and for some reason Unity just killed half of my prefabs and assets and it just fell apart. Not even going back to an earlier version fixed it (for some reason). I could cry but tears won't get me anywhere so LET'S DOOO DISSSSSSS!!

Good luck to you all!

My Ludum Dare theme suggestions!

This will be my first Ludum Dare, and I'm very very new to coding. But I'm still really excited! I'll be using Godot. :smiley_cat:

HTML5 engine recommendations?

I tested out Java last time and it was a disaster. Not a friendly language for quick results.

So, now I try HTML5, I'm in the process of sharpening my webdev skillset and I just can't resist Ludum Dare.

Any recommendations for a HTML5 game engine to use? I've looked into some of the free ones but I'd like to get some feedback from people who have used them before I take the dive into the docs.

My submissions are in!

TVGS returning as a real-world meeting location again!

That's right, Tech Valley Game Space (TVGS) will be organizing a Ludum Dare real-world meeting once again at our Troy, NY, USA :flag_us: location. Our co-working offices and high-speed wifi will be open for the jammers on the opening day at 5 PM EST. Our venue will be open from 10 AM to 10 PM for the rest of the jam, including Monday. You can RSVP at Meetup and Facebook.

After the Ludum Dare weekend, we plan on live-streaming ourselves playing Ludum Dare games for a few Sundays. Come check us out at twitch.tv/techvalleygamespace! Missed the live-stream? We also post them at youtube.com/c/techvalleygamespace.

Incidentally, we'll be streaming a lesson on Armory on September 12th, 7:00 PM EST. You can hop onto any of our livestream/video channels above to check it out!

Bitmelo - an editor for making small pixel art games

Hey yall. I just released the first version of a game editor I've been working on called Bitmelo! It works in your browser, you can check it out here:

https://bitmelo.com

Bitmelo was born from my desire to have the most friction free game development experience possible. It's heavily inspired by fantasy consoles such as Pico 8 and Tic 80, however while I love the simple nature of their API's I wanted to have a development experience that wasn't constrained by the same limitations as the games you make in them.

It's still very early days for the tool, but I'm excited to use it for the next jam.

Is this too early for an I'm in?

Anyways, I'm in for LD45 jam! I will be attempting something quite wild. Not only will I make a game during LD45. I shall also create a small Lua-like programming language specifically for this game. It will most likely compile to LLVM and execute just-in-time. Either that or I'll make a tree-walking interpreter. What's even crazier, is that the language implementation will be done in another language that I created by myself.

So here's the plan:

  • Day 1: Language implementation.
  • Day 2: Testing the language, design, graphics and audio.
  • Day 3: Game implementation.

These constraints will require me to work ridiculously fast and nearly non-stop for three days. I already sleep for only 6 hours a day, so I might get down to 5 or 4 just for Ludum Dare.

Also, I will be live-streaming all of it on Twitch, so follow me there and stay tuned.

I'm in

Lets go for the fourth entry.

My suggestions:

  • Cards are essential
  • Your companion is useful
  • Collecting is part of the game

Check out my compiled list of free resources! Feel free to make some suggestions!
