LD29 April 25–28, 2014

Looking for a good music generator (program)…

Hello again! As the title states, I am in the market (The free market, that is!) for a good music generator! I’ve seen a few before, and I can remember none of their names :3. Basically what I am looking for is a program that outputs music. Literally. That’s all. Just that. One thing. If there are some configurables, that’s fine, I’m just looking for something easy to use. The reason that I am looking for this is because A, I am terrible at making music, and B, When I try to make music, it takes up a lot of time. I’d like to focus mainly on code, and know that I can whip up some music in 5 minutes. Thanks in advance!

Thank you to everyone who replied!

My 2nd Ludum Dare

The next Ludum Dare is fast approaching and thanks to the one back in Xmas, I’m ready to tackle this one. I know where I went wrong and I’ll have C++ templates set up, of course this is depending on whether I can get an idea out for the chosen theme – but isn’t that always the case?

I don’t know whether I’ll be participating in the warmup weekend as I do have other things on, like rebuilding my websites and continuing on with the ET remake which desperately needs to be finished for this year. It is getting on well though – thanks to the use of to do lists.

My tools of the trade are as follows:

  • Notepad++
  • C++ (GNU)
  • Graphics Gale

So, until next weekend, I’ll see you then! 😀

Just Another I’m In! LD#29

For LD29 I will be making, not just my first Ludum Dare entry, but my first ever game. I will be using eclipse to code and the LWJGL library. I may also use other libraries such as slick. For graphics (if there are any) I will be using paint.net and there will be no sound. if anyone knows any good tutorials for LWJGL and its OpenGl  wrapper or wouldn’t mind answering some of my questions please contact me at vogonjeltz101@gmail.com.

Many Thanks and Good Luck,

Vogon101

EDIT: I will be using a couple of extra libraries for rendering. This may include (I’m hoping to find a better one or get slick to work) this text method found here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60764983/code/SimpleText.java

EDIT: I will also be using an open source library that I am coding myself, found here: https://github.com/vogon101/VogonGame

Warmup Weekend – Ludum Dare 29

Are you psyched for Ludum Dare 29? Yeah! Are you ready for Ludum Dare 29? No!?? Then between now and Ludum Dare 29′s start time, you’re encouraged to test your tools. We call it Warmup Weekend (but we don’t mind if you’re early or late). Make some art, import it, and draw it on screen. Make some sounds, import them, and play them on cue. If you’re using a new development tool, figure out the development cycle. Learn how to make a release too!

Bullet point summary:

  • No rules or limits. This is practice.
  • Learn your development tools! Write some code, run it.
  • Make some art, get it on screen, make it move.
  • Print some text to the screen. Print some text to a log (if applicable).
  • Make some sound, get it in game, make it play.
  • If you’re motivated enough, make your experiments in to a game!
  • Make something that should take “hours”, not 2 days.
  • Then package it up, put it online.
  • No time or day limit. But if you have no other plans this weekend, why not?

If you like what you’ve done, feel free to share it.

A status post of slight irritation.

I thought I would be able to prevent myself from status posting from posting that “I’m in”, but I found that I could not resist the urge to finally say something after programming nearly 3 years in seclusion and silence, my work never being seen by anyone other than me.

My greatest hope for my first LD is that it will finally motivate me to finish something, which I know well is nearly undoable in 90% of my projects. I really want to escape the creeping featuritis demon that has been plaguing me in all of my current game projects, and perhaps a deadline will finally give me the kick in the bum that I need.

Anyways, my tools shall be:

  • HTML5, JavaScript and Canvas2Dbuild your future today!
  • Pixi.js – if I happen to decide on building a platformer.
  • Notepad++ (Windows) / jEdit – I’m a noob who hates vim and is too bothered to learn the 40-year history of Emacs.

Meanwhile, I am battling my hatred of using the equals sign in the role of the assignment operator.

Can’t wait to start

My mind is running in circles thinking of every possible theme and what I would do with it.   I just can’t wait till it is revealed.  This time though I really want to put some sort of story in it.  I feel that I am finally ready to get a little more complex.  This will be my third game jam.

Tools I will be using:

Unity

Gimp

Blender

Audacity

I’m in

It’s my 4th Ludum Dare!

Once again I’m excited for the 2 day fun-work fest!

Language: Java (or Javascript?)

IDE: Netbeans (or Notepad++?)

Drawings: Paint.NET

Sounds: Audacity or taken from freesfk.co.uk

Music: Used with permissions and found through google/soundcloud

Feel free to look through the source code of previous games or use anything from my github account

Ludum Dare #6!

Howdy!

This is my sixth entry into Ludum Dare and my girlfriend, Cassie’s third. This will be happening the weekend we get back from Seattle’s Sakura-con, which will perhaps provide some sort of inspiration for our game, for better or worse. I’ll be doing all the code and audio for our game, while Cassie will be entirely in charge of visual arts.

My set of tools is as follows:

  • Operating System: Ubuntu GNOME 14.04
  • Code Editor: Sublime Text 3
  • Score Software: MuseScore
  • Audio Editor: Unknown/Custom

Cassie’s tools:

  • Operating System: Windows 7
  • Image Editor: GIMP

Frameworks and code snippets:

See you all on the far side!

I’m in again [4th time]

I’ll be using this weekend to see if I can make a small demo before the competition next week.

Most likely, I won’t be doing a 3D game and will stick with 2D.  The code will be available at GitHub and assets will be uploaded to my FTP site.  Target platforms will be Linux and Open Pandora.

Tools I’ll be using are as follows:

GIMP – 2D bitmap images

LMMS – Audio creation

Audacity – Audio editing

GCC – Compiler

gVim – Editor

ZED – Engine

I will post again before the competition starts next week.  Have fun this weekend, everyone!

I’m in Eighth Time

Hello! I’ll be grinding out another game in this coming compo.

As usual, using the 48-hour rules. This time, I’ll be switching up tools, to something I am only barely familiar with: Stencyl! Artwork will be made using GIMP, sounds will be made if bfxr, music in Pixel’s PXTone. I will be listening to Chillstep, drinking smoothies, maybe streaming(?), and loving every bit of this Ludum Dare!

I wanna make this a memorable LD weekend, so I made it a 4-day weekend from my full-time job. It also starts on the day that I age one year on paper. Super excited and as always I can’t wait to see what all of you come up with, wishing you ALL the best in creative flow and motivation!

Into the Fray

This’ll be my first Ludum Dare! It’s exciting.

  • Platform: HTML5 most likely
  • Engine/Tool/Magic Box: Construct 2 (or maybe Unity; still deciding on that one)
  • Graphics: Gimp 2.8.2 all the way.
  • Audio: Audacity, sfxr
  • Other: Notepad++ for kicks

I’m pretty close to a real-world location, so I might do that. Until then, I must meditate to hone my mind and body for some jammin’. Good luck everyone!

C2 here too :)

I’m in!

Hello, all!

I’m in, for the first time! I hope the theme isn’t bad.

I’m going to be using:

  • LÖVE2D 9.0 as an engine, with Lua as the language.
  • the Game Maker standalone image editor, for editing images.
  • Programmer’s Notepad for writing my code.
  • bfxr if I decided to try out some sounds.
  • if I ever get around to writing music, I’ll likely just write an engine to play it samples that I’ll make in bfxr.

I am likely going to use SECS (https://love2d.org/wiki/Simple_Educative_Class_System), which is a simple class system for Lua. I’ll also likely be using Meta, which is a fast real-time syntax-changer for Lua and can be found here (https://github.com/bartbes/Meta). Good luck to everyone!

Let’s go!

First LD48 (without a team), my tool list!

  • Unity3D (engine).
  • Gimp (image editor).
  • LMMS, bfxr and sfxr (music and sounds).

Let’s do this! 😀

I’m in for the second time

All right, let’s do this again !

Last time I went with the additionnal challenge of teaching myself ActionScript during the compo, and it went not so bad.

For the next compo, I will use my favorite language and try to make something very enjoyable. So my weapon of choice will be :

  • Python and pygame
  • Pixie for graphics, along with various stuff of the interwebz (free tilesets, character generators, etc.)
  • BFXR for sounds, and LMMS for music
  • SublimeText or (g)Vim as editor, I have not decided yet. I will try SublimeText during the warmup week-end and see

Also, depending on the theme and my progress, I will probably use my little pygame framework to speed up the programming part.

It’s avalaible here : https://github.com/anbcorp/minigame (Warning: very early stage of development)

0RBITALIS: From LD48 to Steam in 100 days

Last December I took part in the 28th Ludum Dare. I tried to get the most out of its theme (the incredibly vague “You Only Get One“) and the result was 0RBITALIS. A minimalistic gravity simulator with a puzzle flavour. The game was both the most voted and commented entry in the contest and in the end… … …it didn’t win! I do not deny that I have been quite disappointed, initially. But after reading all the positive comments from the Ludum Dare community, I decided to keep working on the game. One hundred days after, 0RBITALIS has been released on Steam. How did I do that? Weeell…

comp_01 comp_02

December

  • 15th-16th: 0RBITALIS is born!
  • 16th: available on Newgrounds

January

  • 7th: available on itch.io
  • 13rd: available on IndieGameStand
  • 27th: first contact with Mastertronic
  • 30th: nominated for the Newgrounds Award 2013

March

  • 12th: showcased at BAFTA Inside Games Arcade
  • 17th-21st: showcased at GDC 2014 in the ALT.CTRL.GDC section
  • 28th-30th: showcased at EGX Rezzed in the Leaft Field Collection
  • 27th March: Doseone joins the project

April

I want to see this not as an happy ending, but rather as an happy beginning for 0RBITALIS. I am looking forward to see how feedback from its community will shape it for the final release. And if there is a message behind my story, is surely not to give up. There are thousands of people out there who love your game: they just don’t know it yet… :-)

Was about time

First time LD (compo). Was about time I joined this 😀

Tools of trade (depending on theme I’ll do either a 2D game or a 3D game):

2D

Engine: HaxeFlixel

Coding language: Haxe

Platform: Flash

Art: Aseprite

Sounds: Bfxr

Music: need to improve on this skill… trying out LMMS now (at worst, AutoTracker :) )

3D

Engine: Unity

Coding: C#

Platform: Unity Web Player

Art: Blender + Photoshop

Sounds: Bfxr (might reconsider)

Music: same as above

That should be all. I don’t think I’ll be streaming or anything since I’ll be on a 3G internet connection temporarily (the pain…) but hope I’ll manage to get all my tools ready before I lose my beloved 40mbps current one :).

Good luck to y’all and hope to see some really nice games out of this!
