LD26 April 26–29, 2013

I’m in for my second LudumDare main event!

Language: C#

IDE: Visual Studio 2012

Framework: XNA / MonoGame (not decided yet)

Art: Paint.NET, Pickle

Sound effects: Bfxr

Notes: Notepad++

IRC:  Miranda IM

Stream: Open Broadcaster should do the trick

Timelapse: Chronolapse

I’ll probably make Windows and Linux version of my entry! Looking forward to compete!

In for the long haul

So I’ve decided to attempt another Ludum Dare, see if I can increase my 66.666666(repeating of course)% completion rate.

My earlier games include Tiny Hack/ (LD#23), and My Little World Domination Simulator (LD #25).
I’m hoping that I won’t end up with a severe cold like in LD#24 (Evolution), though I think I’ll stick to my usual tools.
Maybe I’ll even see about packeting a Linux version before the deadline this time, I’ll just have to set up a proper Linux build environment that isn’t too bleeding edge. Ubuntu LTS maybe, comment if you have a better idea.

Language: C++
Framework: SFML with my own creations named Kunlaboro, and the core part of Yarn if I’ve managed to get it open-sourced at that point.
IDE: Visual Studio 2010, and Sublime Text 2
Art: Gimp, and possibly Blender
Sound: Not the slightest clue, possibly Audacity and Windows sound recorder
IRC: irssi, the client of the future, on my laptop over SSH.
Timelapse: Possibly Chronolapse, might also use a small tool I found called simply Timelapse
Broadcast: XSplit, since I really like it.

You’ll probably be able to find my broadcast at http://twitch.tv/ananace once the Ludum Dare starts, I’ll be sure to set the game correctly so I show up on the sidebar. Music should be expected on the stream, but you’re free to mute it.

Hope to see you there :)

I’m in.

ludumdare

I might use Löve, or javascript/canvas or maybe qbasic depending on the theme.

To all Java Text-Based game makers!

Hello! I am planning to make a text-based game this year in the Ludum Dare, and I realized how lazy I am…so lazy that I find it hard to keep typing “System.out.println(“walri rock!”)”, so I thought of this:

In the beginning of your main class, make 2 methods, a “say” method and a “take” method, these will work as the cin and count in C++, the say method would be the following:

public static void say(String message){
System.out.println(say);
}

And make the take method the following:

public static void take(String takeTo){
Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);
takeTo = sc.nextLine();
}

And TA-DA!!! I am stating now though, that I have NOT tested the take method…Anyhow, you would use the code like this:

//This is a simple intake/output thingy majogger
String input = "";
say("Say something!");
take(input);
say("You said: " + input + "!");

Fell free to use any of this code, and Good Luck to all!!!!!

Wow, I never knew java user input was this easy, rather helpful, thanks!

The take method will not work – you can’t use Strings as an output in Java because they are immutable. Your sample will always output “You said: !”

Your say method won’t work. Try…

Have your take method return a String:

You thought about using the Console?

The “take” method won’t work. First, you’re modifying a reference, and you’re not freeing the Scanner sc, causing a memory leak.

For take, try:

Hey! what about sysout?

About “solo only”

Is it okay that my friend helps me come up with the idea for the game but I and only I will do the rest? Last time I wanted to join, I could not come up with anything for the theme given.

I’m sure it’s fine, as long as all the content of the game is yours.

Warmup Weekend – Ludum Dare 26

It’s Warmup Weekend time!

Between now and Ludum Dare 26′s start time, you should make sure that your tools work. Make some art, import it, and draw it on screen. Make some sounds, import them, and play them on cue. If you’re using a new development tool, figure out the development and testing cycle.

Bullet point summary:

  • No rules or limits. This is practice.
  • Learn your development tools! Write some code, run it.
  • Make some art, get it on screen, make it move.
  • Print some text to the screen. Print some text to a log (if applicable).
  • Make some sound, get it in game, make it play.
  • If you’re motivated enough, make your experiments in to a game!
  • Make something that should take “hours”, not 2 days.
  • Then package it up, put it online.
  • No time or day limit. But if you have no other plans this weekend, why not?

If you like what you’ve done, feel free to share it.

Excited!

Hack-a-Jam ON FRIDAY!

Starting April 19, the 5th Hack-a-Jam Game Development Competition will begin!

This competition is held every 2-4 months, and this is the approximate 1-year birthday. Because of this, I am offering a prize to the winning entry. This prize is free advertising (one month), on both of my main websites, which have decent traffic.

What is the Hack-a-Jam?

The Hack-a-Jam is a game development event/competition where you must create a game within a set amount of time. The time given in each competition varies, as it could take two days, four days, or even just 30 minutes. Different from other game jam events, the Hack-a-Jam uses a multiple-award system, meaning there is no “Overall Best Game”. This allows for us to give awards to the best games, and not make a decision between two games which are equally amazing. The theme will be a suggestion voted on from the community through many different voting sessions. Another thing you could do to win certain categories is make things such as dev logs, timelapses, etc. You can them post them or links to them in the Posting section of the Forums.

What are some possible winning categories?

Most Psychedelic Visuals
Most Deaf People After Hearing The Game
Most extra items (dev logs, etc.)
Most Rage-free
Most rage-induced
Most Suggestive Content Without Crossing The Line
Shortest Game
Best themed
Most Things On Screen Without Lag or Crash

What are the rules?

Since we are a laid back community, you could probably get away with most of these rules (except major ones, like turning in your entry a whole 24 hours late…). Here are what I would like the community to follow, however:

1. All game content must be created within the set time. Note: You can use other music, placeholder graphics, etc. as long as you are allowed to!
2. Your game is not required to follow the theme, but would greatly improve your chances of winning. Unless almost every other game is not following the theme, it is almost guaranteed that your game won’t win anything.
3. You must work alone, and you must create everything included in the game.
4. All game creation tools are permitted, such as Unity, GameMaker, Photoshop, Flash, Paint, etc.
5. All external game extensions/DLLs are permitted. If you want to make it multiplayer (if you are using GameMaker), go ahead and use 39dll.

You can visit our website at http://www.hack-a-jam.com/. From there, you will want to head over to the Posting section, and sign up for an account (you can use Google, Facebook, etc.). Good luck to everyone!

I’m in for the fifth time! Hopefully I’ll be more prepared than last time. :)

Hi, everyone! I’ve been anxiously awaiting the next LD since the last one ended, and I didn’t quite get my game “finished” as I had planned, but I did submit it anyway in a kind of broken state…

But this time that won’t be a problem! I’m going to keep it super simple and try a 2D platformer this time. Using the Warmup week to experiment with that type of game.

I’ve learned a lot since the last LD, and so much since my first LD back in December 2011.

I’m going to prepare myself this week and I will be ready to make a really good game this time, not that I haven’t made some things I was proud of in the past, but they all had glaring problems even if they were fun. This time I will keep it simple and make a complete and fun game by the end of 48 hours.

Tools:

  • Unity 3D
  • PhotoShop
  • PhotoFiltre
  • LithUnwrap (If needed)
  • Blender
  • Anim8or
  • bfxr
  • Spotify (To keep myself going with my favorite music 😉

See you all later, and good luck, have fun!

I’m (probably) in

I’m probably going to attempt to do the competition, which will be my first try.  Unfortunately, it’s the weekend before finals, so that may get in the way.  Hopefully it all works out, though!

Libraries: JOGL

Audio: Milkytracker, Audacity, sfxr

Art: Paint.NET

I wrote a couple of files that just draw things/play

Good to see you here! Lemme let you in on a little secret, no one here is trying that hard to be competitive. The whole “competition” thing is just for kicks. We all do our best, and if some of us have better bests than others, hey, give ’em a rank to let ’em know.
