Character Library

I’ve started a little library of characters for game prototyping. Since it’s mostly for my personal use the only exported files right now are 32×32 pixels tall, but I am planning on including all the original source so that anyone with Spine  can re-export it and do whatever they want with the higher resolution (but not, frankly, better-looking) images. I only have one guy in there so far, but I plan on creating other generic-looking characters/props in the weeks to come.

Image Atlas for a small guy in a black suit and red gloves, going through a number of common game animations.

Black Suit, Red Gloves.

I don’t know what the proper protocol is for things like this. I’ve got it hosted on bitbucket, in case anyone’s interested, or they can get it directly with

git clone https://bitbucket.org/visibleatom/characterlibrary.git

Probably in for the Jam

Okay! Let’s gooooo!

The main reason I’m doing the jam rather than the compo proper is because I’m hoping to get some local fairly preposterous base code (nothing application-specific) in shape the week prior, and relatedly because I’m not sure precisely what “declared and shared” means or whether it might conflict with what I’d want to do with these libraries in the future. Tools are likely to be my trusty GNU Emacs with C99 GCC/MinGW, a mutant form of Lua 5.2, SDL 2, and either OpenGL or pure software rendering. Development on Debian GNU/Linux AMD64, deployment hoped to be on {Windows, Linux} × {i386, AMD64} but we’ll see how it goes. Maybe I’ll even manage to get a timelapse capture of the screen, though my multiple-virtual-machine setup may make that pretty difficult depending on where I end up compiling. Everything is maybe. This is what Ludum Dare is.

(The secondary reason I’m doing the jam is because timing tends to be kind of squirrelly for me. Hah.)

Sounds like we’re doing much the same thing!

Our first Ludum dare

Hi guys this is our first Ludum dare, we are a team from Spain(sorry about my poor english).

We gonna try to do it the best possible and i am very nervious for this jam. Hello to all and good luck 😀

Anybody knows how can i change my avatar? i didnt see nothing in profile.

Warmup Game #1 – Tank Defense

I have the concept for the first game of Warmup Weekend Madness. It’s a tower defense game where instead of towers, you have tanks that you can order to move around.

There will be nine types of tanks and about that many types of enemies.

I might take time after the development deadline to polish it up a bit, but otherwise I am giving myself only twelve hours.

This game will be the one that I submit as my formal warmup game.

I will be posting demos as I make progress! 😀

Tower defense with tanks? Sounds good to me!

– Henry

Edit!

Hey, I forgot to say when I’m starting and finishing this!

I’m starting at 10AM EDT (2PM GMT) and finishing at 10PM EDT (2AM GMT). If I feel that I need more time to polish before putting it on Kongregate, well, I’ll take that time! 😀

Hold on, Goats Kittens, and now?

There was something about secret subthemes only some gamemakers know about.

So do you have to visit the IRC channel to find that out?

LD Warmup: Unity 3d / Photon Networking Tutorial Livestream

Livestream will begin at 16:00 UTC on Saturday, April 20.

http://www.twitch.tv/quill18

I’ve already made one Unity 3d Multiplayer Tutorial, but there have been a lot of people asking for more depth and details, plus for an example of a multiplayer FPS specifically.

I’ve been in contact with the amazing people over at Exit Games (the Photon people) and they’ve arranged a 1,500 concurrent user demo server (my livestreams have peaked at 4,500 viewers — though I don’t expect that many tomorrow).

It should be an awesome time. This is also going to act as a warm-up for Ludum Dare. Make sure to go to the Twitch.TV channel and “follow” to be alerted when we go live.

If you can’t make it, videos should be available later on my quill18creates channel on YouTube.

I’m going to attempt to place the complete project on the Unity asset site afterwards, assuming I can figure out the submission process.

Once More Unto the Breach

You Never Go Full Indie

Whatever.

Compo only.

I’ll be using just Unity3D—Pro, but just the bare bones stuff that’s available in Free aside from the custom splash screen—SFXR for sound effects & FL Studio for a song loop if I’m feeling fancy.

iTween for basic animations.

Modeling & advanced animation in 3D Studio Max, texturing in Substance Designer, UI via NGUI. External image editing via Photoshop.

Oh, & M2H’s most excellent Localization Package since it makes text handling such a breeze.

Lots of alcohol. Kids, if you drink don’t drive.

Oh, and don’t go full indie. You never go full indie.

Count me in!

I have never actually done a LD before, I have tried but gave up half way through, this time I am going to do it though!

What I will be using:

Game Framework: LÖVE

Art/Graphics: Gimp

Sound Effects: Bfxr

Music: Don’t know yet!

Food&Drank: Lots of tea, energy drinks, and snacks!

I will be live streaming(hopefully) and uploading a time lapse here: http://www.youtube.com/indieretrostudio

I hope the theme is good!

3rd LD, first as Team o/

New LD, new tools (again, I like using different tools each time), and this time: a team 😀

So hmm tools:

  • Language: Haxe
  • Game engine: Haxepunk
  • Graphics: Gnux o/ (the team’s graphist)
  • Music / SFC: Leol o/ (the team’s compositor)
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse (?)

Streaming

I set up the streaming channel, but i am still unsure if i want you guys to see me writing a 48 hours deadlined application, or worse Drawing something -.-” . Oh well, i got still time to decide ;3

Who’s the DS9 fan?

I’m running through the Slaughter and I notice a pattern:

Maybe I’m just showing my own biases by noticing a pattern here….

(Edited to add another that just showed up)

Wow, that’s such a obscure reference (I never know the name of TV episodes). Impressive catch. 😉

We’re in

We’re in! We are Hawk and thegreenfish.

For coding, we’ll be using http://codiad.com/ for HTML5 with Javascript or maybe XNA gamestudio.

For art, we might possibly use paint. Not sure.

Hack-a-Jam Theme Released!

The 5th Hack-a-Jam Game Development Competition has begun, and will last 48 hours (plus three more because I released the theme early). If anyone is wondering why I released the theme so early, it is because I am not going to have access to the computer anytime later tonight.

This competition is held every 2-4 months, and this is the approximate 1-year birthday. Because of this, I am offering a prize to the winning entry. This prize is free advertising (one month), on both of my main websites, which have decent traffic.

What is the Hack-a-Jam?

The Hack-a-Jam is a game development event/competition where you must create a game within a set amount of time. The time given in each competition varies, as it could take two days, four days, or even just 30 minutes. Different from other game jam events, the Hack-a-Jam uses a multiple-award system, meaning there is no “Overall Best Game”. This allows for us to give awards to the best games, and not make a decision between two games which are equally amazing. The theme will be a suggestion voted on from the community through many different voting sessions. Another thing you could do to win certain categories is make things such as dev logs, timelapses, etc. You can them post them or links to them in the Posting section of the Forums.

What are some possible winning categories?

Most Psychedelic Visuals
Most Deaf People After Hearing The Game
Most extra items (dev logs, etc.)
Most Rage-free
Most rage-induced
Most Suggestive Content Without Crossing The Line
Shortest Game
Best themed
Most Things On Screen Without Lag or Crash

What are the rules?

Since we are a laid back community, you could probably get away with most of these rules (except major ones, like turning in your entry a whole 24 hours late…). Here are what I would like the community to follow, however:

1. All game content must be created within the set time. Note: You can use other music, placeholder graphics, etc. as long as you are allowed to!
2. Your game is not required to follow the theme, but would greatly improve your chances of winning. Unless almost every other game is not following the theme, it is almost guaranteed that your game won’t win anything.
3. You must work alone, and you must create everything included in the game.
4. All game creation tools are permitted, such as Unity, GameMaker, Photoshop, Flash, Paint, etc.
5. All external game extensions/DLLs are permitted. If you want to make it multiplayer (if you are using GameMaker), go ahead and use 39dll.

You can visit our website at http://www.hack-a-jam.com/. From there, you will want to head over to the Posting section, and sign up for an account (you can use Google, Facebook, etc.). Good luck to everyone!

I’m in for the LD26 Jam

I’m planning on participating in next weekend’s LD26 – I’ll be doing the jam again as it gives me more breathing room as far as the libraries and tools I can use.

Hardware: Macbook Pro, Wacom Tablet, iPad

Game Engine, Languages, & Tools:  Unity 3D Pro 3.5, C#, Xamarin Studio

Libraries & Frameworks:  Futile, Vectrocity

Graphics & Art: Corel Painter 12, Photoshop CS5, Blender 2.6, Procreate iPad

Music & Audio: sfxr, GarageBand, Renoise

“I’m In!” and Horrible Timing

Next weekend, I will try to participate in Ludum Dare. I have a few things to attend that will probably take up most of the weekend, but i hope to have time to make a little game in a couple of hours.

Either way, I will probably be making a warmup game this weekend.

I am never sure of what tools to use for the compo, as it very much depends on the game, so here is a big list of things i might use:

  • FlashDevelop
  • FlashPunk
  • SFXR
  • BFXR
  • Paint.NET
  • GIMP
  • Unity
  • Blender
  • Audacity
  • an MP3 converter
  • LMMS
  • Hexels
  • Ogmo
  • GameMaker: Studio
  • Twine
  • Voxatron

Looking forward to making some games.

How I slaughter!

howIslaughter

Not sure if there is some sort of protection against just calling the Slaughter link, but I like to live in illusions.

How it works:
Load the page -> Find the theme name -> Find the theme ID
Then based on input call the link with the correct ID.

Not sure if I should release it or not, since it’s not really the preferred way to vote I guess.

Thanks to The Syntethic Brain for some art!

I noticed this too and wondered what would stop someone from using some scripts (say, bash+wget) to spam the up/down/kill link for their favorite theme. I actually took advantage of the links when I accidentally down’d a theme I liked. I hit “back” to get the theme key and then fetched the “up” link for that key twice (once to neutralize the down vote, once to register my up vote). I don’t know if there’s something server-side to mitigate this or if we’re just on our honor not to be a-holes about it.

I’ve suggested a game where you … idk, shoot the themes you don’t like or something :)

If someone (with awesome knowledge) can explain me if this actually works, I will make a better one for next LD voting.

“I’m in 100%!”

I will definitely be doing next weeks Ludum Dare! I’ve been doing the onegameamonth.com challenge, and this is just more practice/experience!

I won’t be making a warmup game due to school and other projects, but expect me next weekend!

I know a few languages but right now my main/favorite toolset for creating games includes

  • Hardware: Battlestation of a computer, Guitar, Galaxy Nexus & iPhone 4 for testing purposes
  • Languages & tools: Html5/JavaScript, CocoonJS, Clay.IO
  • Library/framework: Jaws.js
  • Audio: Guitar w/m-audio interface, sfxr
  • Art: something bad i’ll lump together from photoshop

I was born for this…

Very ready. I have been playing a lot of Journey this week (white robe GET) hoping I can manage to create something with a hint of that awesomeness…in a weekend. I’m nothing if not ambitious 😀

Usual tools: Unity, Blender, Mixtikl, Paint.NET, Audacity, coffee.

I’m back! Second entry :)

So, last LD, I built my first game ever – The Fix – and it was terribad.  I’m still rather proud of it, but this time around, I want to do better.

I used PyGame last time around, but this time I want a little more flexibility, and possibly some 3D, so I’ll be using Unity!  I’m excited.  Best of luck to everybody!

I’ll also be streaming on Twitch.TV
