LD26 April 26–29, 2013

Testing My Environment

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on LD and I know one of the big things people say about LD is that its important to know your tools well beforehand, so when the time comes, you don’t hit a choke point and need to be spending 100 hours(figuratively) Figuring out how to build for distribution.

I’m currently testing all my tools to see how Quickly I can setup a new LWJGL/Slick2D Project, and then find the easiest way to export into an executable jar file I’m also testing sounds, music, and graphics.

I’ll admit, I’m mostly doing music and sound testing because this would be the first game i’d have ever used music or sound. as i’ve never had enough time to implement them in previous compos.

I also decided to set up a Twitch like a bunch of people, so I will have a live stream going all weekend for you all. 😛

http://www.twitch.tv/jay_pc

I also have a Tumblr which has some Mumbo Jumbo from the 7DRL(Shadows of Humanity) somewhere in there is a link if you look for it.(link on the right sidebar)  Ill be updating less important things tumblr, I generally use it to work out Ideas while I’m writing.

Only 12 More Days!

Going in, for the third time.

The first time I entered, I was using an experimental language, that failed.

Second time I entered, I forgot that Java is annoying. Also, I was too ambitious both times.

Now, comes the third Ludum Dare, I will spend the next week planning on how I should go about making my game, and developing a library to help me with general code (Vectors, perhaps some algorithms, etc). I am going to be putting a lot of work in this year, I do hope I finish.

3rd times the charm

I’ll be joining for the third time using this:

Language: Python

Libraries: Pygame, Pymunk, Personal Game Engines

Content Creation: Photoshop, Paint, Garageband, sfxr, my sketchbook

My history of game making and such.

Im 14, have been using unity for over 6 years now, I had a friend introduce me to it when i was 7 and i messed around in it. After a couple of years I began to make stories and begin to develop fun little mini-games with “Scratch”. eventually my parents shipped me off to ID Tech Camps, a camp where they teach you how to make games, programming and much, much more.  im 12 now I have amazing background on game development i have an engine, but nothing to show…. so i take a break and begin to go into math and stuff. 13…I join my first ever ludum dare, best experince ever. I got to meet new people and learn how to make awesome games and get advice from people all over the world. i am now 14 and hoping to do another ludum dare  COMPO.

btw, if your going to “CrashSpace” in LA im the white skinny kid with brown hair/ blue eyes. kthxbai

love your story, it’s like mine too! apparently i’m not the only young scratcher/ld contestant!

I’m In

I’m game to do my first Ludum Dare. It’s my first, so I think I’m Jamming, and I will be using the Cinder library

WTH is Cinder?

My first Ludum Dare

Well, I decided that I’m going to do my first Ludum Dare! Assuming I have nothing going on that weekend, I’ll more than likely take part in the Jam.

Tools I’m using:

Language: Visual Basic 2010

Graphics: Paint.NET

Music: No idea. I was thinking about using like, Mario Paint Composer or something simple like that. Any suggestions?

Livestream: Twitch

I’m a bit nervous considering I’m using Visual Basic, but I’m only taking part in the Jam.  Maybe when I’m more experienced, I’ll do the actual competition, but I’m mostly doing this for the learning side of it. Since I have a habit of not finishing projects, this should be interesting.

By the way, when I say I’m using Visual Basic, just note that I’m not going to be using pictureboxes and all that, lol.

Anyways, to all the other people taking part in this Ludum Dare, good luck!

Let’s try this out

I’m a young guy that likes to program stuff (usually in java or lua in computercraft) so i think this would be a fun challenge for me.

Language: Lua

Library: LÖVE2d

IDE: SciTE and maybe notepad++

Graphics: Paint, gimp and pyxeledit if i can learn it quick enough

Sound/Music: Otomata, bfxr or sfxr, minecraft noteblock studio and audacity

Livestream: xSplit on Twitch

Looking to join a team

I’m a very experienced mobile, web, and back-end developer, just getting in to game programming.

I’m looking to learn, and could definitely contribute to a team. I’m looking for a team that already has an experienced designer and programmer. Any tips on how to find one? Could anyone use some help?

I’m willing to fly somewhere in the US for the right team (or we could just work remotely). Let me know, thanks!

Im In Again

After failing to finish LD #23 I have decided to try again, this time I’m more prepared.
I’ll be doing the Jam.

Language: C#
Engine: TIME/MQDE source available here https://bitbucket.org/matter123/time
Graphics: Gimp
Sound Sfxr/Bfxr Autotracker-bu/iNudge
Timelapse: chronolapse

Good Luck too everyone and have fun

I’m In!

Hi

I am entering in the Ludum Dare Jam, But if I do finish in 48 hours I will enter into the Compo!

I am using GML and Gamemaker 8 Pro. Also using Acid Xpress to make music!

This is my first time so I’m pretty excited!

May post a time lapse on my YouTube Channel – CablePlays http://www.youtube.com/user/CablePlays?feature=mhee

Can’t wait!

Cable Plays

First Timer

So this will be my first LudumDare! Not sure if I’ll enter the Jam or Compo, more likely the Jam since I might be busy at the time.

I’ll be using the following:

  • Language: Flash (Axel Game Library)
  • Graphics: Paint.NET / GIMP
  • Sound / Music: SFXR / LMMS
  • [Other stuff?]

I might also stream it, if I do I’ll post a link to it.

Oh yeah, I’m also doing this as part of onegameamonth.

Good luck everyone!

Its my first LD as well! Good luck to you!

I’m in!

This will be my third LD, and hopefully my first successful one. As long as I can get through Google Code Jam (which just happens to start at about the same time as LD) quickly, I should be good.

Tools I’ll be using:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Platform: I’m up in the air between whether or not I should target Android or PC first. (suggestions?)

Sound: Bfxr and Audacity

Graphics: Paint.net

Livestream: http://www.twitch.tv/pwnedu46 (XSplit broadcaster)

Edit: OBS runs much better on my computer, and it’s FREEEEEEEEE, so it looks like I’ll be using that instead.

Depends on what your goals are. If your goal is to get your game reviewed by fellow LD participants, PC will get you more reviewers than Android. Cross-platform web would get you more reviewers than either. If your goal is to get an Android game out the door in 48 hours, then screw the reviewers and make it for Android and port to whatever during the porting provision.

I would say do whatever seems easiest at the time. If it takes forever to port, do it later. But if it takes five minutes, go ahead and do both.

Google Code Jam seemed interesting for a guy like me, since I like math and algorithms, but then I found out that I cannot do it. Why? Because you cannot do it if you are “a resident of Quebec, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Syria, or anywhere that the contest is prohibited by law.” Fuuuuuuuuuuu I so happens to live in Quebec (a Canadian province), and I’m not sure why it is prohibited here.

LD26

Hello!!!

A new ludum dare is comming, and this time i dont want to make the same mistakes again. So, im imposing myself with some rules:

1) No new games. Ill work with this 3 basic games as basics……tetris, snake and arkanoid. Ill have to adapt the selected theme to one of them as the pilar of my project.

2) My project, my graphics. Last time i took some graphics for inet thinking into change them before release, but time line came and i screw it myself……..not again!!!

3) The main target is to finish the project, and it must be done before time line…..instead of time line setting the end of the project :(

4) Secundary target is to get something funny. Pretty = Better, Complex (can be) = Exciting, but Funny = Satisfaction.

Good luck everyone!!!!!

P.D: Oh, before i leave, ill use Java, stand alone and applet. Photoshop for graphics and sfx for sound (if have time :D)

I find choosing what you want to make beforehand to be outside the spirit of the Ludum Dare. I feel that it is to make a game, not implement a game. But still, there’s nothing against it in the rules as far as I can see. Oh well.

This sounds fun! I’ll give it a go!

Last ludem dare my brother, RadioLemon (at http://207.58.176.222/compo/author/radiolemon/), participated in the event. Him and I are both very new to this game making stuff, but I was so surprised at the game he came up with in just under 48 hours!

I’ve decided I’d like to try this Ludem dare thing with him this time around. However, I am very new to this game making stuff and have very limited programming knowledge, so I don’t think I’d be able to do it on my own. Because of this, me and my bro are going to give it a go for the team game jam. I’m thinking of helping him out with most of the graphics, some design, and possibly sound of the game.

Programs: Eclipse, Netbeans

Possible art programs: Paint.net, GIMP

Possible Sound programs: Audacity, MS sound recorder

Sounds like fun! Unfortunately I have absolutely no musical intuition so sound effects might be beating empty cans together or something like that! I’ve made my avatar a baby version of myself because I’m a newblet!

Bro! We got this!

Chien Loco is In For the 1st Time

Hi everyone, I’m Paulo, a Brazilian living in Montreal, Canada. This will be my first Ludum Dare. I have some experience from three past Global Game Jams, but this time I’ll be doing it by myself, and hopefully I’ll complete the project as well as the other three times. My tools of the trade:

  • Netbeans 7 and g++ on Ubuntu 12.04 (yes, I’m somewhat eccentric)
  • Gimp
  • sfxr, Otomata , BFXR and my trusty Epiphone + Fender Mustang  to hack some music and SFX.
  • An epson scanner to get whatever I can scribe on paper to disk.
  • Mingw32 for Linux, so I don’t have to dual boot to build binaries for those using Windows.
  • SFML 2.0 (I’m doing this game prototype to consolidate my skills) C++ or plain C and Chien 2D, an open source SDL 1.2 based library I developed long ago. The choice will depend on how much learning more about SFML will give me more difficulties, instead of benefits. I have some base SFML code that I wrote on my recent dev blog that I plan to reuse.
  • I might have some crazy idea to use some library that I din’t remember to cite here, but those are most likely to be publicly available for a long time.
  • Simple time lapse tools, to capture my desktop during the JAM.

My skills are mostly related to programming, so hopefully I’ll come across a good idea to polish it in under 48 hours and cross compile it for Windows.

Im in!!

First time to do this, should be fun =)
Planning to use untity.

Looking To Collaborate On LD26

Hey everyone! SonnyBone here…

I said that I would not be competing in any more Ludum Dare competitions until my commercial game is released, but I lied a bit. I’m not going to be creating a game on my own, that’s for sure… but I’m willing to work with a talented team to provide audio.

My LD23 game earned a gold medal for audio, and my LD25 entry came in 4th.

You can check out my previous LD games HERE
And you can download the songs I created for my LD games HERE

If you’re interested, leave a comment here with your previous work/experience… or contact me directly HERE

I wanna work with some rad and talented dudes/dudettes that are familiar with Ludum Dare. Let’s do this!

Spritely – Autogenerating Sprites From The Web (Free Tool!)

Just in time for Ludum Dare #26, I’m releasing a beta of Spritely, a tool I made for autogenerating placeholder art. We have lots of tools for automatically making music (like Autotracker) or sound effects (like cfxr) – these tools are great for adding in temporary content when you’re rapidly developing a game, or for generating content that you can’t make yourself just yet (I have no musical sense, so Autotracker often comes in handy for this). Why don’t we have one for art?

spritelyexamples

Spritely is my attempt to make one! It uses image sources like Google Images, OpenClipArt and Wikimedia Commons to generate sprite-sized art automatically. It comes in three flavours – an easy-to-use GUI (which is really ugly), a command-line interface (in case you want to automate things) and a Java library (for building right into your game). Best of all, the code is public domain so you can hack it and extend it to your heart’s content.

Download links for the UI, command line, and the source code in the README on GitHub

What can you use Spritely for? Well, it’s handy for generating art to fill gaps when you’re prototyping – you don’t have to stare at coloured rectangles any more. I’m hoping lots of you will find that useful when you’re coding like crazy in a couple of weeks. But why not think more experimental?

WALRUS!

For the #7DRL competition this year I tried to make a roguelike generate itself. One of the things I added was enemies, player icons, items and skills that had their graphics generated on-the-fly by Spritely. The player said they wanted to be a dog… or a walrus… or a trumpet… and Spritely made a picture to match. If you reduce Spritely to just searching for one or two images at a time it can do it quite quickly (not quick enough for realtime, but I’m sure you’ll find a creative way around it – in my roguelike I just searched in the background and added the icons in when they were ready).

If you use Spritely for anything, from placeholders to a new genre of games, let me know! You don’t have to, of course, but it will put a smile on my face and also let me justify spending time on making it. I want to create more tools like this that spin off from my day job (where I research techniques for automatic game design). If I get lots of feedback I can show this off to people next time the funding nightmare comes back.

Good luck in Ludum Dare 26! If you have any questions please leave them below. I’ll do my best to update Spritely when I can, but no promises – feel free to make your own extensions and fixes, the code is free!

4th time lucky

Did great time but this time lets do better! Hope to have some fun with a good theme.

Using:

unity 3d

blender

and gimp!

The obvious winner enters. So as to win, obviously.

This is my “I’m in” post for the Compo.

I will either use Unity or Pygame for this, depending on whether I decide to make a 2D or 3D game. Bear this in mind when reading my tool list.

Language: Python / C#

Art: Paint.NET, possibly Blender.

Audio: Garageband, BFXR.

I’m going to attempt to follow Quill18‘s stream while I code. I seemed to manage last time, so hopefully I won’t get too distracted.

Should I go the Python route, I will use some self-written libraries for Grids and a Game class. You are, of course, free to use these yourself if you wish.
