LD26 April 26–29, 2013

ALRIGHT here we go

IMG_20130427_110446I was supposed to start 4 hours ago, so I’m a bit late. Guess I just have to WORK FASTER

Feeling a bit stressed, don’t have my notebook, idea dump time.

I left my notebook at the office, so I am just going to dump my ideas for this jam here. I think I have been failing at jams recently because I haven’t worked out a good idea before kicking the jam off, and instead just going with the first thing that pops into my head. Apparently this doesn’t work very well.

My Ideas.

1. A game based on minimal nation by robert hood. Was thinking that this could take the form of a shmup, but I am not sure how I would work the sound into it more specifically. It would be nice to make just black and white shmup that had a strong audio sync. Maybe each level has enemies inspired by a different song. Or perhaps the whole game is based around the track “one touch” where you can only have one simple input. Would need to write covers of the tracks or something though.

2. Work on a game that I need to work on anyways, based around a different classic piece of minimal aleatoric music. Don’t really want to talk about this, and couldn’t release it on the website. Also it is 3 player. So wouldn’t really be working on LD at all.

3. A rogue like that only uses a single mechanic from the list of rogue mechanics. I have a design that I started working on that was just focused around throwing and area effect spells, perhaps I could do a rogue that only does one of those things. Maybe throwing only, you can pick up darts and they only destroy at a certain distance, and below that they just do a bounce back.

4. A platformer where you can’t move backwards, only forwards. and jump. I am thinking this could be a bit like aaron steed’s bump, except realtime. Don’t know if it is possible, or worth it. Maybe. I suspect he has already attempted this, and it didn’t work for some reason.

Arrgh, writing game ideas like this feels so pointless, really need a proper notebook to record all of them. I think the issue is that text doesn’t really allow me to visualize the ideas as well, I can only write them, and I struggle with creating images this way.

Maybe I will just switch over to physical prototyping and try to come up with a game that way. Or just skip it.

No! Sleep! till…

Wow people have already submited some games??

Time for a food break

Since I am seeing Unity screen shots heres is my First Screen shot post

I’m doing it!

Hey guys! I’m really digging this theme so I’m gonna jump into the fray.

I won’t have all the 48h to make the game but I will try and finish SOMETHING at least, I’ll be trying to do a super minimal first-person dungeon crawler in the vein of Dungeon Master/Early Might & Magic games! 😀

Good luck to the rest of you jammers, let’s make some rad games!

I’m in!

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! I’m in! Last time, I was working in a group with a friend, and that didn’t turn out so well, so this time, I’m back, with more knowledge, and more determination, and alone! I’ll be honest, though, I started a little bit before I posted this, to get back into coding, and not deceive anyone. I have a few ideas for this theme so far, so I hope I’ll finish in time. I’ll be using C++, with SFML and Box2D. That’s it.

And, as always, I’ve linked my workspace: http://i.imgur.com/meI5EFI.jpg

[LD26] Starting just now… but got an idea!

Regarding the theme, I decided to go with a gameplay I would like to implement, and think it as minimalist…

I will go with a 2D top view car racing game, with a bit of retro style, and very minimalist in everything: code, visual, gameplay… but still fun to play.

I will work 1 hour today, then 2 or 3 hours tonight… and same (or less) tomorrow. It’s quite a 8 hours Game Jam for me… Actually, my time is minimalist as well :)

Dat looks shitty.

At least some of it looks graphically nice.

So, now we have a player and a couple of shots. Not pictured: I have libsackit working now and it’s playing the music I made. Also, the title text transitions nicely now.

No, there is no actual collision detection yet, and you can’t even move the player. But the bullets move! Honest!

Next thing (which will have to wait until tomorrow) is to get the player moving around – then we can work on enemy mobs, and eventually making the player shoot stuff. Oh, and making the player die.

Any ideas for what I should call this player? I’m not taking the theme very seriously at all – I’m hoping for a fairly “normal” guy’s name.

Woho!

This is my second time and i’m overly excited! Even though the theme is my personal favorite of all time, i’m pretty unhappy with it, because i just recently finished a super minimalistic game. Let’s see how i will approach it. Starting with the obligatory Desk-Photo and my setup:

Got a game idea, worked, slept, now more work!

Last night was a good night. The theme was announced at 10 PM in my time zone, and my partner and I began brainstorming. It only took about half an hour to get something nice worked out, and then we began working.

My last (and first) game for LD was a bit of a speed platformer, and this game relies on basic platformer mechanics, so I began setting all the goodness up for platformer physics, sprite animation, etc.

At 12:30 AM my time, I decided to retire until around 4. Sadly my body didn’t let me get up at 4, and it is now 6. Oh well. I’m fairly well rested now at least!

Good luck to everyone today, and have fun!

A game idea starts to form

Saturday, 11 a.m. (8 hours in):

Thinking about the game while trying to sleep proved to be a very good idea. So even though I woke up one hour later than planned, and also went to the super market, I’m not entirely out of schedule.
Compared to others, the theme is suiting me a lot. It means that I can get away with minimal graphics and consider that even a bonus (if done right, of course). My first idea while laying in bed was to have minimalistic controls, but I didn’t really want to make an endless runner aka Canabalt. I then thought about what minimalism is – a reduction of the information we receive, distilled to only the essential bits. So how about reducing the player’s information by limiting his senses?
Somehow, I remembered a game called Batcave or something like that, which I had seen at a previous Ludum Dare, which lets you control a bat in the dark using its sonar. I liked the idea back then, and it fits quite well into Minimalism. Of course, I can’t just redo something somebody else did, not on purpose at least – that would take the whole imagination part out of the contest. So, what other places are dark and have animals?
The depths of the ocean are pretty dark – like, really dark. And I guess there’s an animal operating with sound waves or similar (or I could just make one up). But this would mean that I’d have to draw fish, which far surpasses my artistic skills. Maybe something simpler in form?
How about the universe? Except the various stars, the universe is dark, and most planets are round. Great, I have the setting – and also the gameplay. But more on that when I actually get it to work.

Timeplan: 1 hour behind.

Progress + idea

Well, that took me way too long, as I had to scrap some of my code. Movement now works like a charm, though.

Untitled

That’s a pretty long worm

Now, about the game: It’s going to be a shooter, in which the player controls a worm (or a snake, whatever). Every segment of the worm will have an equipment slot, which is going to hold weapons, armor and such. I first need to get all the core mechanics in place, then I’ll work on some graphics and sounds (and music, if I have the time).

“THE QUEST FOR COMIC SANS”

As a babby coder, I don’t reckon it’ll be any good, but I’m working on a single button bullet hell with 3 bit colour depth… it’s only just got to graphics-level, so here you go:

Things are shaping up quite nicely.. BUT I still don’t have any gameplay fitting the theme…

Right now, I still have some time to find one, but it will quickly become urgent…

Progress, going to sleep hopefully I don’t sleep all day!

Here it is! Doesn’t look like much, because it isn’t, it took me awhile to come up with my idea. Ultimately I got something kind of funny, that suites minimalistic, as you have to keep your gameplay as minimalistic as you can for a high score, also, too many moves and you will get lost, you lose! I built an editor and everything right into the game, made a few resources, I am not sure what I will do with all the black space yet, but I’ll figure it out. If I have time I will add lighting and such.

Looks interesting. I wonder what it is? :)

Vsync in LWJGL?

I am having some problems with vertical syncing in my game. I set Display.setVSyncEnabled(true); before the display creation, after it, but nothing really helps. Is there any other alternative to vertical syncing? It’s really annoying and barely playable with this amount of disruption.

EDIT: This apparently only happens with low grade graphics cards.

First break

So I spent about 7 hours and I got a good portion of the basic code completed.

The game is going to be a top down combat arena game played in a “Game&Watch” style. I reduced the framerate to a minimum of 1 frame per second. Everything is played in steps like the old hand helds. At this time, I feel that the game may be too slow to be fun, but I am confident enough to come up with enough features to hold the player’s attention while playing. Here is the link to my current build. Now time for a much needed break.

Got tired of coding – so I made some sprites!

Compo – I’m in. First time alone :-(

Hi everyone!

First time in the compo and the graphic is going to be laughable. I’m very lucky that this year Minimalism won, so I have an excuse to be “minimal” in the art!

So, I’m going to make a multiplayer game in HTML5, or better, I will use DART and compile it in JavaScript.
This is my first HTML5 game I’m going to made, so… I have a question.

How do you disable default browser functions?
I have a canvas, but if I double click on it, chrome will select the page. If I click spacebar chrome will go on the bottom. Any idea? Thank you =D

Morning Update and Reference Files

I’ve had a bit of a slow start to this Ludum Dare. I woke up 5 hours in, as usual but development has been slow. Obviously being relatively new to Unity it’s not very surprising, although I thought I’d remember a little more than I do. To try and counter act this disadvantage I’m going to pull in some scripts from Emulation which was my first game, I made it in Unity about two years ago and after ten months didn’t get around to finishing it. A complete zip file of the scripts I’m pulling from can be found here, they don’t come with any guarantees so be careful if you decide to use them, also please remember to credit Mythalore.com in your app. Thanks, Sam.

Current screenshot:

The path to Minimalism!

I have decided a title for my game, as shown above. Unlike the last ludum dares, I’m doing my menu system and polishes first, which means I don’t have to keep time for them later.

screenshot118 screenshot119

Optional theme from OneGameAMonth included, may contain traces of root vegetables.

That was faster than expected. Thoughts on the game so far.

For most of the LD games I make they have a decent amount of content, however for this game, and perhaps due to the theme as well, it seems like I’m going to finish the game much quicker than normally.

And I’m making a different sort of game this time around, so I think the extra time will help me do some fine tuning as well as some external playtesting, which I rarely get to do.

I’ll get to think about how this game impacts people a lot more than I normally do.

Still don’t really want to say what the game is about just yet. I’m not sure if I should state it explicitly through narrative text in the game, or lead people to draw their own conclusions and figure it out on their own.

In one sense, I want to tell a story, and share an experience of my own. And that’s easier done through a bit of text to help communicate what it is you’re doing in the game. But on the other hand, it might create more interest in the player’s mind if they’re trying to understand exactly what it is I’m trying to show them. Though if the game doesn’t make any sense, then a lot of players also won’t bother to play through it. There might be a good mix between too much text and enough to keep them curious.

In either case it makes me feel a little bit vulnerable. That’s definitely not something I think about when making games normally. And it’s just a few squiggles on a blank screen!

Ludum Dare 26

The rise of the Team Castor

Hello, we are Team Castor and this is our first Ludum Dare. First, let me describe the team : Julien and Jérôme are the developers. They write de code in Qt and sometime it’s miserable to see them overcome the mysteries of programming…

Cosette is the graphist. She draw the wonderful skins of our game. And I am the tourist of the group. I’m Mathilde and I will share the progress of our game to the world ! (We are ambitious)

Here is the concept of our game :

You will embody an animal conveyer to a zoo, in the galaxy.

The game runs in two parts : in a first part you will build your space ship with modules. The aim of the construction is to build the spaceship with the minimum of modules. This minimalism is the key to succeed. The less you put modules on your ship, the more you have bonus for the following of the game. The second part is the travel through the space. It will be in turn by turn with one event in each turn. You win a level if you deliver your cargo to the zoo.

Here are the modules you can build :

Coquepite : the cockpit

hexa cage: the cage

Fuel tank: the fuel tank

Laser: the laser

Cold Store: the cold store

Cabin: the cabin

reactor: the reactor

sensor: the sensor

Vide: a dead animal in cage (mission lost)

And here is an example of spaceship :

Level design finished

Since my idea suggests levels to be depending on each other (like, if you lose your sword one level, you won’t be able to use it in any other level), I started with planning levels. I sketched all levels with Tile Studio, and now I have the programming part left.

Screenshot 1

The game will be much of a puzzle game than of a skill game. Each level is supposed to be easily passed with full equipment, but when you lose pieces of it you should look for a way around.

As for programming, I made the player run around and jump, and that’s all for now.

Don’t forget to watch my stream.

So I’m over 8 hours behind.

Since LD starts at around 4 AM here in Denmark and I didn’t want to stay awake for 24 hours I went to sleep right after the theme was announced.

I was initially quite frustrated with the theme but inspiration hit me after about half an hour, and I wrote down my ideas on my tablet while lying in bed.

This is what I wrote down verbatim:

World’s Most Simple RPG

 • No real story or dialog.
 • All objectives presented as “requirements” and “reward”.
 • Play on RPG stereotypes.
 • Simple graphics (8 x 8 pixels)
 • Quest types: Fetch, Slay, Escort, Guard
 • Attributes: Strength(physical damage & health), Speed(movement & attack speed), Intelligence (magic damage & mana)
 • NPCs: Quest Giver, Blacksmith, Alchemist, Wizard, General Goods Vendor, Generic (Says ‘Hi!’)
 • Skill Trees: One for each attribute.
 • Weapons: Swords, Daggers, Staffs
 • Armor: Heavy, Light, Cloth

Basically the idea is to take the classic MMORPG elements and completely strip them down to their essentials.
For example, instead of a Quest NPC delivering some generic reason for giving you a quest such as: “Please help me, bandits have stolen my jewelry. Please bring it back to me and you can have my father’s old sword!” , you’ll just be presented with “Fetch <Jewelry> x5, Get <Sword> x1”.

I’m going to start working on some art now. I hope that I won’t spend more than 2 hours on that before I start programming. Once I’m finished with drawing some basic spritesheets and tilesets I’ll post them here and then move on to programming, drawing more art as I go along.

Also, I may at any point decide to cut out some of the features of that list as I was quite sleepy when I wrote it and I realize now that it might be a bit much for 40 hours of work.

Doesn’t escort fall under guard? Sounds pretty awesome!

Good theme – I’m in!

I’m thinking about focusing on story this time.

This fits the theme as I can keep the GUI and the code extremely simple. My plan is to write a simple web server based on the Go net/http packages so that players can just run the program and point their browser at http://localhost:port/ to play.

This approach will make distributing to different platforms and adding multiplayer quite easy.

The problem is that I have no idea how to write an intriguing story for a text adventure (or any kind story, thinking about it) so I’ll just have to guess and see what I’ve got after the first day. Any hints, pointers or tutorials would be very helpful!

Good luck to all of you!

The Plans So Far

of which I dearly hope will change

You are some kind of bug alien queen thing. You need to make more bugs to protect you from a horde of… (rolls dice) snake aliens. Why this? Well, before I drew up any plans, I managed to make these my bonus objectives for this compo through various conversations with people (which I am sticking to with more gusto than the theme, apparently):

 • No blue colour anywhere
 • Use the colour red
 • Insert potato into game
 • Non-humanoid characters

Have some totally illegible scribbles (and angry rants) on graph paper! I’ll update everyone with more progress when it has been made.

a lot of illegible scribblingsthis is completely illegible

…I forgot to add potato. Well, I’m sure I’ll find a way to add potato down the line.

Title: Zen Dish

I still have no idea what I’m really doing, but somehow this thing came to my mind: A game for making minimalistic dishes (hence the title). The game has two phases: first you make a dish by pushing things on a plate (with optional boiling/seasoning). You can group multiple items and have some special power (whatever that is). Then, on the second phase, the whole thing turns into a platformer game where you play it on the dish you just made. I don’t even know what I’m talking about (possibly due to hunger), but that’s my report for now.

Particles!

Much progress has been made of the last few hours, expect a playable demo up soon.

Let’s start with the least important things !

Ok. Since I started 7 hours ago (5:30 a.m. in France), I’ve managed to do everything except the core mechanisms of the game.
So here’s the least important thing:
zip_portrait
That thing (called Zip) now earned the ability to move and jump.

Now that’s done, I need to code some collisions and gameplay mechanics :)
The gameplay will be about changing Zip’s color. He will be able to pass through obstacles that are of the same color than him. While the core gameplay isn’t really original (platform game, switching platforms’ state), I’m aiming for level design and progression originality.

A prototype version will always remain playable there:
http://www.teradem.net/HTML5/Zip/

I had a lot of fun prototyping on HTML5 this last year on free time (well, a few hours here and there), now’s the time to use what I’ve learned :p

Good luck to everyone !

Haxe: a bad decision

Just when I thought I have everything carefully outlined and am ready to do this, I had to realize that I just can’t get Haxe to work… I’ll give it a few more attempts, then switch to good ol’ AS3.

So, I’m in…

Decided I’m gonna try my hand at yet another Ludum Dare. This’ll be my third time participating and hopefully my second time submitting a game and maybe even my first time participating in the compo instead of the Jam. I already have a couple ideas in mind and just hope I can balance doing this and my homework. As always I plan on using flashpunk and paint.NET for art and I’m not sure what I’m gonna do about music but I hope I can get something finished before times up. Gonna have a lot of fun with this.. Hope You all do too

Got a concept

It will be a minimalistic strategy game. See if you can decrypt the notes 😉concept

Collected Thoughts & Ideas

My collected thoughts with two main ideas for possible games.

So basically either I’ll make something with people surviving against nature or other things OR some kind of space style asteroid mining game (no asteroids clone!). I try to flesh both ideas a bit out during my lunch time.

My Setup

setup

I’m (@nixeldev) all setup now for @paulstamp and @markavian coming round to jam later :) We’re all doing individual games but it’ll be cool to get a creative dev vibe going on for the weekend :)

Just gotta think of what I’m gonna do now. I’m sat staring at a blank unity3d window. Certainly minimal… Box-It-Up! Ship it!

² – Update #1

First LD for me (not first game jam though).

I decided to make a platformer with a square and some circles. So far, I got some base sprites and tiles and a prototype made with Construct 2 to see how it renders and test some mechanics if needed.

I also got a prototype map made with Tiled so now I’m going to start coding.

How my team’s game is going

9 hour mark, I think it’s going alright. The graphics are mostly placeholder, but there’s some good stuff in progress right now. As for the programming, it’s nothing special, just a level select screen (with one level to select) and a basic loop for where the first level will be. I’m out for the night, hopefully I can put in a whole day’s work tomorrow.

Don’t touch walls!

Late start!

Hi everyone,

I’m dragonee and I’m entering Ludum Dare competition for the first time. I’m very excited. :)

I’ve decided to make a short story using the Ren’Py framework. I won’t discern much about the story itself, leaving only the name in progress: The Room.

Few of my friends are sitting right beside me and completing their own games. It’s such a fun event to do it in a group even if working solo.

See you around and don’t lose hope during your work! I hope you’ll finish your game on deadline!

Draw, Draw, Draw, Draw… Beer, Pop-corn, Draw…

Some ideas, and maybe a direction

IMG_1614 IMG_1615

Found an empty booklet, so I have something to use for notes. HUZZAH! Came up with a few good ideas, and I think that the first one is actually quite solid, so I might just go with that one. That was easy :d.

Thinking about doing an audio sync’d version of warning forever, with the intent that the enemies that you face will sound somewhat like minimal techno. Going to try to focus the sound set on that group of sounds. The potentially unfortunate bit is that I am going to need to write a collision detection routine, and potentially some 2d physics junk, because the unity stuff isn’t really meant for what I want to do. Maybe unity isn’t really the right language for this anyways, and I should just do it in something else.

Probably just going to bang out the basic stuff real quick now, and try to get it as playable as possible as quickly as possible, then fall down the depression hole of proper physics later. HERE WE GO!

Getting tired but making progress

It’s 7am for me and I’ve been up since 2pm yesterday… Anyway, I changed my mind on what I wanted to do next, took a break from code to rig and animate my character:

The animation for when he absorbs a colour makes it so much more satisfying…

Back to code though, a little camera work is necessary. In the spirit of the competition, I’ll reveal that I am using a very short bit (basically 5 lines) of pre written code for smooth 2D camera following. If you happen to see this and and go, “hey I’m writing and C#/Unity and I could use something like that!” here it is:

FollowCharacter.cs

Though it will likely need some tweaking, used a couple of magic numbers in there…

Belated “I’m In”

This is my third LD. Considering the theme, I’m glad I’ll be using Twine. Not sure what I’ll do yet, but the idea of super minimalist erotica just struck me as very funny.

Start!

LD26 is finally here!

Minimalism being the theme.

Anyway, I am already starting almost 8hours late because I had college. Thankfully,I came up with a pretty neat concept and charted out a game design doc during my free-time.

Time to get programming and create a rough prototype. Wish me luck because if this weekend goes successful,I might end up making my first “finished” game. And not the half dozen unfinished prototypes.

First details to “Once I Found Love”

Although I don’t have the time to work on the game for the whole 48 hours, I decided to join LD this time again.

I decided to go with a very minimalist space game, which is very focused in the things you can do (fly and collect stuff), but still has a feeling of vastness, as the space in the game is huge (200000 x 200000 pixels).

You are an astronaut searching for your partner, which flew into space and left you behind. You decided to go after your partner to bring him back and thus the adventure begins…

Here’s a first screenshot showing a very small planet near a blue sun. There are speakers on some planets giving you missions or information.

First screenshot of "Once I Found Love"

I hope I will be able to integrate the story I came up with. Right now I only have the physics up and running and some graphics.

Best luck to every developer joining Ludum Dare! :)

Gecko spirit

Making level editor and physics engine.

Gecko came to help.

Another late starter

And a first timer too!

One neat idea – three concepts – no idea which one to use.

I guess I should have a prototype ready this evening. Music & Menus tomorrow. Sounds like a plan 😀

Ideasearch complete

I’m doing something, I wanted to try long time ago: a ‘Rick Dangerous’-Demake. :) Animation is complete (standing, walking, jumping), now for some action.

Switched to Construct 2, as it seems easier to start the real game.

VirtualBox Scare

So I use virtual box rather than proper SCC.

It means I can take snapshot of everything. Awesome. Until it crashes.

Trying to figure out what’s taking so long in rendering I ran the VS2012 profiler. Crashed the whole VM. Luckily it came right back up.

My game play continues to evolve here, I’ve added animation, previous path, marking walls hit.
Ludum4

It is challenging! And I keep wanting to play it.

GB

CSS: many, Me: 1.

I’ve spend something like an hour or two fighting with chromium, css, columns, space coming from nowhere.

When I was on the verge of losing my sanity, I’ve just removed all the columns junk and done it with float. I took 2 minutes and work exactly like I want. Up to 9 little square of 4x4px in a big square of 24x24px, with a gap of 3px between every little square.

Game on the go

Well, I admit it took me a couple of hours to decide what kind of game to make.

I opted for a building/arcade game about polygons (everybody seems going for squares this time :P).

I started with an arcade survival game a-là geometry wars, but then I switched to this new concept.

This is a super-early shot of what I’m doing:

Schermata 04-2456410 alle 13.10.01Yeah, it looks pretty ugly, but I’m focusing on game mechanics XD

In (late)

Hey, i’m IN

yes, yes a little late this time.

Tools and stuff:

 • Unity3D / C#
 • Gimp / PS
 • Blender
 • Audacity
 • Coffee

Minimalism ->

End of day 1

It’s getting late here in Australia, so I’d best head off to bed. I’m very pleased with the progress I’ve made today, as I’ve basically got all the gameplay stuff done! I’ve uploaded the current version here.

I’ve also integrated it with Clay.io’s leaderboard system, so hopefully that works well. If anyone has any feedback for me, I’d love to hear it!

Also, keep in mind that the graphics will be improved tomorrow, hopefully. I’ve got the whole day to polish this thing up.

What a peculiar room – Looking for Musician

room-crop
Curious that room, isn’t it? A mockup by @laufman… that I have to now make work.

Hey Musicians! We’re looking for someone to write a good backing track for our little #Sworcery inspired jam game. We’re still working, figuring everything out (too early for SFX), but would love someone to help set the mood. Yes, the game takes place in this one room (part of the room I’ve kept hidden to avoid spoilers).

What do you think? What sort of soundscape do you think suits the lonely room?

I’m In!

This is my first LD. Unfortunately, I am a little late but that’s all good because I have started planning out my game structure. My Tools will be:

Development Toolkit : Construct 2 / GoE
Language : Lua / Action Based Component System
Image Editor : Paint.NET

Planning out with my new favourite tool: XMind

First Progress

So I’ve figured out what I want to do.

wikipedia claims minimalism is:

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is set out to expose the essence or identity of a subject through eliminating all non-essential forms, features or concepts

so I’m building “Break All The Pots!”.

Screenshot_00

so after some mesh reworking and frantic minimal texture drawing I got something almost “playable”

it even has a menu!

First upload is here:

Looks great!!

Deskphoto and Coffee

Hi. Good Luck everyone. The progress is going well. Here is my deskphoto. Yay for lawn chair. P.S. That wall is the only one thats not renovated in the room :D. Yesterday I got free coffee in mail, as I don’t usually drink it, I tried it and its pretty good.

What I’ve built so far

Added in multiple coloured path support, added in victory animations when a path is complete.

When all paths are complete, thats when you will be able to progress, need to add in somewhere to go though first.

Heres a little demo:

Need to add in levels and a narrative to the whole thing. Feeling good about this one.

Regatta

I have a regatta to go to this morning (luckily it’s a short one, so I should only be gone till noon). I’ll be spending every moment when I’m not in ridiculous agony trying to come up with ideas for the game. So, since I’ll be rowing, I guess I should stall all you competition. http://rowingsoundsfun.tumblr.com/

Also: Potatoes for breakfast! So appropriate!

Less is more

I brainstormed some ideas on to paper, then went for a walk to let them settle.

I like the idea of using minimal resources to build something, aka a bridge builder type game. But, that tends to be the point of builder games anyway – use the least resources to complete the task. Also I’d need to use physics and woah no, not today =)

So, as it’s something I’m familiar with, I’ll be going for the classic top-down 2d shooter. Graphics will be stereotypically minimalist, but, the minimalist theme will hopefully shine through in the gameplay as well:

Less is more. The less you shoot, the more health you regain. The less you move, the more ammo you regain.

I have coffee, I have biscuits, I have an idea. It’s time to power up the Developinator and get coding.

4:17 AM as I begin typing this.

Writing. Writing. Writing.

I find it much easier to get my ideas out on paper using a pencil, a Dixon Ticonderoga(I love these pencils), than on a computer with some text editor. My ideas just flow easier; I feel free.

Now here I am jotting down lines I will need to record while constructing the story. Although, I would love to show what I have done so far, I feel that it would just spoil the story too much. So, I will be sure to save all my scratches for my post-mortem.

Sleep. Sleep can wait. Not that it ever wants me anyway.

Pretty good progress yet

Having some pretty good progress with Simple RPG, where your quest is to find your peace of mind.

My goals are to have VERY basic and minimal graphics, but normal rpg gameplay, not simple, but NOT complex
