First Ludum Dare

Hey Everyone! First Time doing Ludum Dare here. I’ve done GGJ and the Adventure Time Game Jam, but this will be my first solo jam. I’m excited and terrified. Here’s what I’ll be using.

Tools:

Language: Actionscript

Engine/Library: Flixel

ART : Photoshop

OTHER:
DAME, FlashDevelop,

SOUND: sfxr / LSDJ

Here’s a pic of my setup:

I might set up  a live stream but I’m not too sure yet.

Let’s Try this Again

I’ve participated in two Ludum Dares before.

The first was a Jam effort with a couple of other guys, which was a lot of fun and something of a success in it’s own way: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22/?action=preview&uid=8218

The second was a solo effort for Ludum Dare #24. I was overly ambitious, spet too long on the art and a complex paper-doll-ish system, quit with four hours remaining, and drank beer instead.

But it was a lot of fun, and even with the stress of working life and impending Christmas all around me I’ve committed to trying it again. Immediately.

So HERE you will find the public git repository of the really terrible and horridly embarrassing mess of an SFML 2.0 framework I’ve pieced together in a tiny fragment of the last two weeks. It’s still open to sweeping changes because I’ve had little-to-no time for designing and testing, so I do not recommend you try to use it. I put it together from ideas I’m familiar with so that I’ll know where I stand on Saturday morning, because I have no experience with SFML itself, and don’t want to be screwing with that.

Bad framework or no, it’s working so far, it’s familiar, putting it together so quickly has forced me to get to know SFML, and I have been thinking about nice ways to implement different systems a lot along the way, even if I didn’t feel I had time to experiment. That’s a job for later.

Other tools I will be using, notes, etc:
Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch Tablet – I suck with it, so it’ll keep my art rough (I tend to be a perfectionist with pixelart)
Otomata (http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata) – If I have time for music. I’m not a musician, so this will have to do
SFXR – For sound effects. The classic one. The newer one makes me dizzy
Visual Studio 2010 (which I’m swiftly falling out of love with after this last week)
Windows 7 (my favourite OS)
Linux Mint (if I find time to port during or after the comp)
Dust – The huge collection of it I just found under my keyboard…huh…
GitHub – Source control. Can I keep a live public repository of my LD comp game while I work? I don’t see why not. I also don’t know how to use git properly so uh… let’s hope things go smoothly.
Junk food – To eat when I’m hungry
Coffee – To drink when I’m tired
Beer
– To look forward to when I’m losing focus but not drink too much of because I have work the next day
Digital Camera – To take pictures of all the food and coffee and beer

Good luck all!

Let’s “TRI” this again?! Get it?! AAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHHHAH

Does a Ludum Dare timer exist?

Is there a Ludum Dare countdown program? I had not seen one listed on the tools page. It would preferably notify you when the blog updated, when time passes, etc. If this program exists,  please tell me. Thanks!

There isn’t such a program that I know of, but you can manage your time using the Pomodoro technique, which, if used properly, can boost your efficiency notably.

It’s right up at the top of the page. Right now it’s counting down until the start of the compo and jam, and then it will change to an “time until end of game-making” timer. :)

The ludumdare page has an RSS feed, so any good RSS reader should be able to give you desktop notifications, and there are countless countdown timer programs out there. It shouldn’t be too hard to get something going. For me, the website works fine though.

LD25 Warmup Game – Z-Like

I put this up yesterday but forgot to post about it 😛

Finished up a warmup game this last weekend, ended up being kinda a zelda-roguelike hybrid with randomly generated floors, took about 12 hours to make, can check it out here

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25-warmup/?action=preview&uid=7131

and see my post with the tools used and information on the game engine here, I could really use the support to get this thing developed further, it’s well along but has so much more to go!

I’m in!

Ludum Dare is pretty much the best thing ever. But we all know that, right? ;)

Tools:

  • Framework: OH god, I don’t know what dev framework I’m going to use. I’m probably going to develop on top of Haxe/HaxeFlixel, but that could fall apart if they seem lacking for some reason. Regardless, I’m compiling to Flash. Python, as much as I love you, porting you to other platforms is a nightmare.
  • Pixen: There’s this great pixel editor called Pixen for OSX that I’ve been using for the last few LDs. I recommend it to anyone who needs a good editor.
  • FL Studio: Aw ye. I’m not skimping on audio this time. Beware.
  • Sublime Text 2: Sublime Text 2 is a phenomenal editor, and its support for autocompletion with Haxe is sick!
  • SFXR: Indispensable in generating those chirps and tweets. :P
  • Git: For those moments when you’re like “Oh God, what happened, it was working like 5 minutes ago…”
  • Coffee: SO MUCH COFFEE
  • Goats
How can you say no to that face??

How can you say no to that face??

  • Wait, what was I talking about
  • Goats
  • Huh
  • Goats
  • Goats
  • Nevermind I’m ending this list

Goals:

  • Above 4.0 in audio. I’m so much better at audio production than I was the last time I actually did audio in a LD game.
  • Improve in graphics. Baby steps here. One of these days I need to drill down and really improve my graphics, but for now I’ll be lucky to get something passable.
  • Beat all my previous submissions in overall. YEAH THATS RIGHT. AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP ME!!!!!

I’ll be committing all my code here regularly: https://github.com/johnfn/ld25 Follow me! I’ll also be putting up base code there, if I ever get around to it…

I’m in

this will be the second time LD for me.
I would like to use Python or HTML5 but still considering which to use…

Tools:(Python)
Libraries:Pygame,PyOpenGL
IDE:GVim + Pydb

Tools(HTML5)
Libraries:EaselJS,SoundJS
IDE:GVim,Firefox

Tools(common)
Sound:sfxr, LMMS
Artwork:Gimp,Inkscape, and paper & pencil & scanner

good luck everyone!

Entering this dare

Right, third LD time I guess.

Still going to go with C++ because I love that language. With the help of Visual Studio 2010, SFML, some home-grown libraries and a fair amount of code snippets just wanting their glory.

Let’s hope this one works out better than the last, where I got sick halfways through and was forced to quit it.

Stream will be available at http://twitch.tv/ananace and this time I’ll remember to run a timelapse program in the background, I want a nice video after all.

Good luck to the rest of you people I guess.

I told you I’d make a warmup. And now I feel… warm. It’s like piss running down my hairy legs.

I didn’t know anything about ActionScript or FlashPunk when I started this, but it only took a couple hours of actual work to make. Experience helped, but I had to unlearn things too. I mostly struggled with the tree generation (because I did it dumb the first time) and all that nasty reference stuff, combined with FlashPunk abstracting away information that I’m used to being ubiquitous. Still, I get the impression it’s a powerful framework once you learn its way of thinking, and it feels great to have maed gaem with it.

But much like warm piss, transient feelings of success go cold fast. An ambitious developer always aims higher, all the way to integer overflow.

The real test is exactly two days away. Not sure if picking up Ogmo would be worth it at this point. I think I’ll just go take a look at others’ FlashPunk games and see how I’ve been doing everything all wrong.

First LD! Here we go!

Hi folks, I’m rukbotto and LD #25 will be my first competition.

I’ll work with my brother @davix1228 and we’ll be participating in the Jam. We know nothing about creating videogames so probably won’t be finishing anything playable. Anyways, this gonna be really fun!

After doing some research (googling), these will be our perks:

  • Haxe+NME+HaxePunk for coding
  • Pixen for artwork
  • sfxr or bfxr for sound
  • Chronolapse for timelapse

We’re also streaming the whole process on twitch.tv for those interested :).

Let’s jam!

Construction

Cause, you know you want to build robots!

All right. So, as for Team Jam rounding up. I wish there was some sort of message system here otherwise I wouldn’t have to do this. However! I’d still like to go through the list:

Programmer: Me!

Programmer: davidsgallant

Audio: maverickprogrammer

Designer(?): Wixio

Other: ???

But really, I’d really love it if we could get some more people or an artist or two here. If you have a skill set that you’d think you can contribute then post below! We will be grouping up in the chat on Friday!

Also, Construction. Cause robots are cooler then zombies.

Mile High Ludum Dare

Will be on a fligh back from the US to germany on Friday and was hoping to use the flight-time for good. Only problem will be that the theme should not be anounce before I board my plane from Washington to Munich… lets hope for a delay :-)

Will be using Javascript, WebGL, Bxfr and Paint.NET.

I’m half in

Though I will be working morning into afternoon, I plan to participate. By setting a reasonable goal and keeping my ambition in check I think I can complete a fun game in 2 evenings.

I plan to make an HTML5 game using Craftyjs. I will be using paint and Gimp for graphics.

I am still not sure what I should use for sound effects and music, any tips would be most appreciated.

PS This will be my first LD, but it wont be my last, and hopefully next time I will have the full time available.
