My first multiplayer online demo!

So I started making an online multiplayer thingy. How hard can it be? I asked myself.

Well… PRETTY HARD! Making a game on a single computer has became pretty straightforward to me, but making a game on multiple computers is much more complicated, since I had to synchronize the characters, and make sure to remove and add characters when they connected or disconnected. I used js for both client and server (node.js) and used sockets.io to do the realtime communication. My code is certainly a huge mess! I had a chunk of code for the client, a chunk of code for the server, and a chunk of code that both had access to, not speaking about libraries.

Anyways, it’s a beginning, and I’d like to see some of you made try it, to make sure the port forwarding and everything is correct. The link will be valid until I will shutdown the computer or my IP adress changes.

The link will be down

Busy LD Crew in March @ GDC’s

Hey folks,

Just a heads up that Phil and I might be especially busy this month (I know I am). I’m out of town as of the 14th, not returning until the 30th (dead tired). After I change back from my gelatinous form to my human form (+/- a day or two), I’ll be able to start responding to your LD requests for our upcoming April event. If you want to get in touch with me (LD related, a deal or opportunity, other) you can find an e-mail here. My apologies, I might be a bit late getting back to you (see gelatinous Mike). If you want to chat with me at GDC, I’ll be around all week, but *hint hint* my Friday is especially empty. :)

We are planning to have another Ludum Dare get together at GDC. Tentative date is March 27th, i.e. GDC Wednesday, at Tad’s Steaks (the food court’y steakhouse we gathered at last year). It’ll be after the IGF Awards ceremony, maybe slightly overlapping the GD Choice Awards, but you can always come a little late. I’ll come back with final details once we’re booked. Oh, and since some people have asked, it will be all ages (Food Court’y).

Ta!

Calling all Minnesota game devs

Upon reading through the LD 26 responses, I saw “April 19th-22nd conflicts with the Minnesota State High School Speech competition, which is a HUGE conflict. U kno?”, which leads me to think there might be some other game devs out in my area. If anyone in Minnesota sees this, definitely put a comment on here or send an email to Bret@indieFunction.com. I’d love to mingle with some other game devs and possibly start up a community in the area.

Thanks, hope to hear back from someone soon,
Bret Hudson

Yep, there are several. There was a local meetup for LD 25 and perhaps also LD 24 but I didn’t make either.

Hello real world!

Hi all. We’re new to Ludum Dare (though, no stranger at all to game jamming). I (@BrianSChung) usually work with my partner (@geeeeeejay), and this is what we made for for MiniLD 40:

anitawwwanitawww1 anitawww2

Anita World Wide Web – http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/minild-40/?action=preview&uid=20323

It’s loosely based on real spiders Anita & Arabella (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_web#Low_gravity), who gave their lives to science by being the first spiders to spin webs in low earth orbit.

We found working with Google Maps to be really interesting, so we want to run with this concept and take it further. It’s actually quite a departure from the games we usually make, so any feedback or ideas would be highly appreciated.

Did you mention before that the spiders didn’t survive this?!? That’s kinda sad ! :( I must have overread that before… so sad! Well, it was for science… so… still sad!

Script Editors?

Hey guys!

I am sort of new to the whole game planning process and usually would go straight in and make a really bad game. But i would like to start adding some sort of organised script to the game and i was wondering whether or not any of you know one.

Cheers in advance!

I’m not quite sure what do you mean by “organised script”. Can you give us an example?

MiniLD 40 Ratings Finishes :D

Woohoo! Being my first jam, I was immediately hooked to the whole gamejam concept. In any case, it was super fun to be involved in this, and I am very happy to have tied for 3rd in coolness. Very enjoyable (and tiring) experience. Will (and am) do it again! Check out my game Sinistar B 😀

Anyway, it was fun, now let’s go to the next MiniLD !!!!

Yes I saw, congratulations. This next LD looks plenty fun, and I already have a gruesome bloody idea cooking. Good luck.
14. Mar 2013 · 18:13 UTC
I guess you get the coolness rating if you rate many of the other games, so that’s one rating you can influence yourself… :)

Bug in ranking list?

So, MiniLD 40 votation closed! I got a  on Theme! My first silver medal in LD! Thanks!!

But as I was scrolling through the overall ranking list, I noticed the ranking was:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (TIE), 5 (TIE), 5 (TIE), 8, 9, 10, …

My question is, shouldn’t the guy in the 8th be in 6th place instead? Since there is 3 guys tied at the 5th position.

Maybe the script that assigns the numbers doesn’t contemplate the tied positions?

Let’s call it a Mini LD result.

The voting is over. I wasn’t voting really much, but anyway.

What I am surprised with is the result. My game got 3 ratings over 3! The last LD, it was 1, and it was 0 everytime before!

Audio was one of that over 3 ratings. Thanks Per for this one, as the music was made with his new tool.

I was going to post an another post, but I’ll combine them.

Here is a funny narration I made with Unity debugger:

Fiction

I wonder if anyone else uses narration style)

It’s still funny, though ! :)

I wonder if in someway you could use that as a game or in a game, really cool idea
25. Mar 2013 · 23:51 UTC
1th? 2th? I reject.

On that MiniLD#40 …

Hey, that was great fun!

Basement02

Also, people seemed to like my game, at least a litte bit. And of course I realize there were not that many votes given to each individual game, and that nobody really cared about this kind of stuff… still I got some points and that makes me happy ! :) I even got some points for Audio, althoughthere was no sound at all… but it worked, apparently! :) ))

Anyway, to celebrate this, I made an update (with sound!) and an option to play online in the Unity player.

Ain’t that great ?!? :)

Please feel free to try it, it’s kinda fun now!

One Game in 12 Hours

2 weeks ago we made a game in 12 hours. It wasn’t completed, so we re-made from scratch it today. We learned a lot of things on the road. At least it’s more playable now and we have a pause screen now.

DungeonWarriors2

We made a map editor, so i can paint the map in photoshop and then add shapes for collision detections later with the editor.

MapEditor

Controls: Warrior: wasdqe, Wizard: 123456.

You can download here(Love)

Looks pretty good for twelve hours. I like the artwork and animations. Did you make the editor in that time as well?

Guess what I am up to!

http://rnd.atspace.tv/PixelDrawer/

I’ll just leave this link here. 😉 It is an early pre-pre-pre-prototype.

I got the main interface to a working state (try scrolling) today.

Realization: I don’t know web design! :(

Here’s what I’ve been working on…

http://rnd.atspace.tv/PixelDrawer/

hint : you can draw on that thing.

I have just realized that out of my 1 year and a few months of JavaScript, I never actually learned web design! I started to learn JavaScript practically at the same time I started to learn the <canvas> api. I know basic html, but I got in the game really late, and I started doing canvas before I could manipulate divs. I messed with node.js websockets, and I don’t even understand html forms yet. Shame on me.

Now, at the stage I am with my project, I’m doing the frontend UI, and html buttons, css, jquery and stuff would be really helpful, yet I am still noob at it. I’m going to concentrate on the parts that I know I’ll do well, and then, maybe I’ll collaborate with somebody.

<rant> On a side note, organising code in JavaScript is difficult! The way the inheritance works just isn’t natural, and there is no consistent way of managing packages. The browser way and the node.js way are incompatible! </rant>

Its funny how the post is targeted towards females too. I don’t mean to be sexist, but I’ve only ever met three female programmers (of sufficient knowledge), and only one of them was interested in making games 😛

Ninja’s Ascent is Complete!!!!

Hey fellow game jammers, I’m very proud to say that our (my roommate and I) first Android app is finally complete! A while ago I posted about it, but back then it was only at v0.3.0. This is the real deal. Version one point oh. I like to think of this as our October challenge entry, we’re just half a year late to the party (or half a year early 😉 ). The goal is to make a dollar. So far, we’ve made a whopping 77 cents off the ads. Raking in the dough! Haha. There’s a paid version for a dollar if one of you spectacular jammers would like to fulfill our goal on the spot! If not, you should still check out the free version and get us closer towards our goal! We’re on to our next project now, and looking forward to the LD in a month!

The game: The game is simple: just tap where you want to jump. You are a badass ninja who jumps on falling rubble to get higher. You have to jump quickly! Also, be careful to avoid those pesky UFOs and dodge those dangerous fireballs. Power ups help you avoid sticky situations, so make sure you grab them!

All feedback, suggestions, and criticisms are welcome :)

Also, the high score board is fully functional. See if you can get your name above mine 😉 It’s DrSuperSocks
