LD33

Naturally…

…I’m in, of course! Probly go for the Jam again for the 5th or 6th time. I’m using Unity 5 and a smattering of asset creation tools such as FL Studio, Photoshop, etc.

Looking forward to making something cool this weekend!

Lairkeeper – Dungeon Builder + Tower Defense (sort of)

Hey, folks. Looking forward to the voting results soon, but I need a few more votes to hit the mark, and I’m doing some last minute voting of my own. I wanted to do more, but I’ve been super sick the past couple weeks sadly. I’m on the mend, though so that’s a plus!

This time around I made Lairkeeper, a sort of dungeon builder / tower defense mix. Overall I think the game’s pretty decent, though I didn’t have time to implement as many spells / enemy types as I wanted. You may want to check out this short tutorial video I made as well since it’ll tell you everything you need to know to play. Hope you enjoy!

“Turn the long eye.
Praised by the ridiculous hammers of the Water clan, it examines water in the year of the food.
The sun shall never again be the same.
As was foretold, studious waters shall slash all deaths from the land.”

Let's do the thing.

Obligatory "I'm in" post. Also just trying out the new website a little bit.

1.5 hours to the theme reveal!

24 hours...ish

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tIWoBJZUlI

I'm trying to make a mini puzzle platformer in 3D. Got most of my core tech set up. I don't usually work in 3D, so it's taken a bit longer than I wanted (but what doesn't take longer than expected in LD).

Next up is probably trying to create an actual completable level to make sure I have something that I can submit if the other stuff I want to do doesn't go as planned. Going to be entering the Jam side of things, as usual.

At this point I've managed to get some better art assets and sounds in. I've also got the win condition primed and ready to go. I ended up spending (read: probably wasting) a bunch of time on a Unity editor script that I figured would help me make the level faster. I also added Xbox controller support for Windows.

Next up is finishing the level design and then (if time allows) / menus / polish. Oh, and I finally came up with a name for the thing - Stellar Twist. Seems appropriate!

This time around I made a little puzzle cube platformer. Honestly I feel like things went really well for me this time. I actually managed to pick a pretty simple idea and keep my scope small, which has been an issue for almost every other LD I've entered. I even had some time to add in a little polish and spent more than 15 minutes on music. All in all I'm pretty happy with the game!

Last day of voting...more or less.

Hey, folks! Been having fun playing peoples' games in the final stretch. My game could use a few more ratings to reach the 20 magic number for final judging. Give it a try if you have a few minutes!

I Am In

I skipped last LD partially because of website issues in the previous event and partially because the theme left me inspirationally bankrupt. It seems like improvements have been made to the site so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

The real question: will the theme be any better? Answer: Of course not! The theme always sucks, right guys?

My game could use a few more votes. It's sort of a match-three style game, but not quite!

I'm a bit behind due to holiday vacation that happened shortly after voting began, and an illness that came with it that annoyingly persists. I'll be rating more games, and will try to get to the people who leave comments before voting closes, as well as a good chunk of danger zone games later this evening.

Inversiosynthesis - Need a few more votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw8an6QAYw8

I need a few more votes for my game. It takes about 5 minutes to play. I'm a bit behind this event due to family vacation / illness, so thanks to everyone who has a moment to check it out.

Is today the day?

Haven't participated since LD40. That was a long time ago. Is today the day I make my triumphant return to the jam scene? Is today the day the theme doesn't suck?!

Well, we might get the former. Let's not kid ourselves about the latter.

Ludum Dare 50

I made a real MS-DOS game.

A lot of games these days take inspiration from retro titles, from mechanics to presentation. This has led to some fantastic releases over the past decade or so, but for LD50 I wanted to take it a step further.

Supplicant is a text adventure inspired by games from the 70's and 80's like Zork. What sets it apart from simply being inspired by these old games is that it was natively developed for MS-DOS using a real 33Mhz 486DX PC and tools from the 90's, Borland Turbo C++ in this case. My thinking is that one day game dev for native retro platforms might die, and the old hardware I used to make the game will certainly die, but I can carry the torch for one more jam.

It was a lot of fun putting this together. I'm not sure if there's much of a market for text adventures anymore, but I might continue to tinker with this in the future to create something a bit larger with more involved puzzles.

If you haven't tried it, head on over to the game page and let me know what you think! Everything's all set up for you to be able to run the game in DOSBox, but you could also take the game exe, transfer it to a real MS-DOS machine, and then run it there.
