I’m In

This is my first Ludum Dare and my first post, so I hope that I’m posting this right.

I’ve wanted to do this for a while but never actually gave it a try. Hopefully I’ll be able to make and publish something finished.

I think I’m going to use either Unity or a Javascript Web Game and maybe opengameart.org for some art and music.

Stones and Bones!

Stones and Bones may break my shticks but words will never hurt me.

I actually finished my first ludum dare game and my first published web game. Yay!

I saw a lot of posts on here of peoples progress throughout the weekend, but I was too nervous about making my game to put the time into posting anything. I told myself that I would post when I finally finished, so here goes!

I struggled a lot in the beginning with finding direction and feeling like the work I put in would even matter in the end. I started by messing around with making my game engine, and I didn’t really have a solid game plan until the last couple hours. But once that happened I got really excited about the project, and I’m really happy with it.

Stones and Bones is sort of an action platformer survival puzzley game thing.

You are in a confined but large, flat 2d space and have to fight stone golems, mummies, and robots while making new weapons by hitting stuff together

Looking forward to advice and criticisms!

its two minutes before start, but this will probably be posted after due to all the traffic on the server right now. Plan to use javascript and html5 to make a game from scratch

2nd Compo Unfortunately, Im going to be pretty busy this weekend, so I'm not sure how much time I will have to make something. Im aiming to make something very simple that will be realistic for the time I can commit. Using javascript and html5 to make a game from scratch.

Good luck everyone!

I'm in for Ludum Dare 43, hopefully school doesn't screw me over. Will probably make a game in pure JavaScript from scratch like I usually do Although I might use the js engine I've been slowly building up.

Super Late Start

Unfortunately starting like 17 hours late because sacrifices had to be made yesterday :(

Im drawn to the idea of sacrificing your friends in an online multiplayer game, but not sure if I can fit this in with the time I have. Current idea is to make a town defensive wave based survival game where each round you must sacrifice a town member to the gods to gain abilities while demons are breaking down your defenses.

Sacrifices To Woobliticus HTML5 Compliant

SACRIFICES TO WOOBLITICUS

published to Compo with new Icon!

Thought I would let people know in the icon that it is Html5 compliant since a lot of people (including myself) can only play web builds icon1.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/sacrifices-to-wooblicitus

How Woobliticus's Art is Procedurally Generated

Creating art directly from code with zero base art assets

Feel free to play the game first for context https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/sacrifices-to-wooblicitus

Screen Shot 2018-12-05 at 1.20.29 AM.png Since people have been commenting positively on my games artstyle, I thought it would be cool to talk about how I made it. Procedurally generating art is something that I have always been very interested in, and I have created many different kinds of random character creators in the past.

People are usually surprised to learn that the type of procedural generation I do does not use any base art assets. The game actually has zero physical art files at all, all of the art is generated when you play the game directly from pure javascript code.

It is all basically randomization of proportions and positions of the things relative to each other. - Random head size - random body size. - The body is always a trapezoid of random dimensions with two legs at the bottom. - random face position - random eye distance and size - random eyebrow distance and curve - random mouth pose - random amount of hair strands - random length of hair strands - random width of hair strands - random curve style of hair.

Wobbly Circles

But the coolest part is probably how it randomizes the head shape. There is a function I wrote called wobblyCircle that basically creates an imperfect circle - in a way it is mimicking a hand drawn circle.

Randomly mimicking hand drawn circles

Screen Shot 2018-12-05 at 1.53.34 AM.png I also wanted to give the head a randomized outline thickness that changed along the circle, but I found I didn't even need to do this directly. Instead I just draw a random wobbly circle in black, and then draw the regular head as a different random wobbly circle with an outline on top. The bottom black circle bleeds through different amounts in different areas which makes the outline look irregular.

Random outline thicknesses

Demons

The demons of the game use the same code as the townsfolk with a few modifications: - They are green - They have horns of random length - Their heads are way more wobbly - Their eyebrows are always angry

Screen Shot 2018-12-05 at 1.34.45 AM.png

Animations

Because of the way the system was set up, I can easily change the facial expression by just changing a few values. - When they attack, I can make the mouth open and the eyebrows angry. Screen Shot 2018-12-05 at 1.41.41 AM.png - When they are scared, I can make the mouth sad, the eyebrows worried, and the eyes bigger and trembling Screen Shot 2018-12-05 at 1.45.16 AM.png - And then when they die it is similar, but their eyes get smaller and their mouths are open Screen Shot 2018-12-05 at 1.47.59 AM.png

I really enjoy making procedural art, and I hope this was interesting. Feel free to let me know if you would like me to go in more detail about anything. Thanks!

Trizzy Tree

Water the sapling and watch it grow into a tree. It will decay over time, and sometimes get infected. Clear up the infections and heal the tree back up to start growing again.
