Progress so far

At the beginning it was very hard for me to think of something that could match "Alone"
After a really hard time brainstorming myself I get game main idea.

Now I have some of the game mechanics. Still so much work left.
It doesn't look too impressive yet :P

Progress so far

All of mechanics is done, tested and working, at least I think so.
I’ve started making first level. All of the sprites are still samples besides main character.
Tomorrow I have to finish all levels and replace sprites.

I hate this theme 😛

LD23

I’m in!

This is my second LD attempt. Last time I haven’t finished my game but this time I’m better prepared.

my tools:

  • Language: Java
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Sound: SFXR

Good luck and have fun to everyone!

The cunning plan

Currently is friday 8:50 pm, I’ve just get back from work. Tomorrow my friend is throwing birthday party at which I want attend.
So my LD shelude looks like this.

8 pm – I going to sleep
3:40 am – I get up and get ready
4 am – theme is announced and I start working
8 pm – I go to the party
??? – gets back from party and go to sleep
11 am – I get out of bed with big hangover and work till LD ends

Progress so far

My cunning plan is working so far. I get up at 4 am and to my surprise “tiny world” theme won. It was not my favorite theme but it could be worse. For first 3h I worked on the idea for the game. My idea is about a tiny nanomachine calld nanobot which is traveling through body and fights with germs. So far I have main game mechanics, with moving triangle (which will be replaced later by nanobot sprite) and life bar.

code + hangover

As written earlier I was at party with friends. I got back home around 4 am. Now is 11:40 and I have major hangover. But it was expected and planned.

As for my game, yesterday I have finished all mechanics. For today I’m going to do all graphic and sound + some bug fixing and animation if I will still have time

Almost over

4:30 h left.
I finished graphic, game balance (it’s not so easy), I fixed most of bugs.
I think I have everything but sound.

LD24

I’m in for the third time

This will be my third LD. First time I didn’t manage to finish my game, second time I was better prepared and I submitted a game but I run out of time and my game had no sound.

We will see how it goes this time. Currently I’m warming up and preparing.

My tools, just like last time are:

  • Language: Java
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Sound: SFXR

Good luck to everyone, have fun and lets make over 2000 games this time!

LD25

I’m in !!!

So four months have passed and it’s time for another Ludum Dare.
This will be my fourth LD, but I’m excited and nervous just like first time.
I don’t have time to prepare or do some sort of warm up. So its straight to battle!

My tools, just like last time are:
Language: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Graphics: Paint.NET
Sound: SFXR
And this time also Tiled Map Editor. Last time I was creating maps in .txt file which costed me a ton of time.

Good luck to everyone and I hope you will have a gerat time!

This is my current status after 12h.
I have to say that I wasn’t expecting this theme. I got some ideas for every theme besides this one. But just like last time theme that won is the theme I’m least prepared for.

After two major crises. One caused by lack of sleep and second after hard battle with parsing JSON. This is what I have. Game is called “EVIL SOUL EATING DEMON LORD FROM HELL in HAPPY KINGDOM”. You are big bad demon in a happy good land and your goal is to do as much evil mayhem as possible. For that you get scores and for score you can buy more powerfull powers of destruction.

Mini Maze is live

Until last minute I didn’t know if I would have time to participate in this LD.
But in the end I managed to find some time and I made this game in one day. It’s far from perfect but it’s something.

I’m in for 10 seconds

I totally forgot to say “I’m In” so here it goes. I’m in!. This is my 5th LD, my tools:

  • Language: Java with
  • Libs: LibGDX
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Graphics: Paint.NET, Tiled
  • Sound: SFXR

This is my first time using LibGDX and I’m not very familiar with it but I know some basics. As always good luck to everyone and have fun!

Game progress

My idea for game is a simple platform-puzzle game. Player controls a clumsy janitor that works in thermonuclear plant and one day by mistake presses auto destruct button. Now he have 10 seconds to get the hell out off there.

At the beginning first hours were very promising, everything went smoothly. I implemented core mechanics, input, and started to render tile maps. And that went smoothly to. I started to feel very optymistic but then come animations and collision detection. I wasted lots of time on bugfixes.

We wasted a lot time on collision detection too :)

Here is a quick update

Since last post I have focused on graphics and level design. Furthermore I’ve done some minor fixes. After around 20 hours of work I’m going to sleep. Good night, see you tomorow everybody.

Done!

Finally done! I’m tired but very happy. This is my 5th LD entry and i think it is the best of all.

In my game you play as a clumsy janitor that works in thermonuclear plant and one day by mistake presses auto destruct button. Now you have 10 seconds to get the hell out off there.

Post Mortem

For the fifth time I took part in the Ludum Dare, this time I decided to use this oportunity to learn libGDX library. One week before the competition I read oficial wiki and write some prototype code that included all basic operations like key input, movment, sprite handling etc. I haven’t thought about game ideas for final round themes as always because I didn’t have time due to my work/home/family responsibilities.

Game idea for “10 seconds” struck me very quickly but it was a little bit different then what I ended up with. I wanted to create a platformer where a main character has a bomb that will explode in 10 secounds and he have to carry it all around the map and recharge timer in special points. During the weekend idea has evolved into what you can play now, mainly due to programming problems and lack of time.

What went right:

– programming
As I said before this was my first real game using libGDX and I must say that I’m realy supprised how easy it is and how many features it has. I will definitely try to better understand it and use it again. If you write in java I realy recommend you check it out.

– art
I’m very happy of how game ended up looking. This is far the best looking game I ever made. I spend lots of time drawing sprites (it took me more than an hour to create a crate).

– level design
The best part of whole LD was when all programing and drawing was done, everything worked and I was creating levels. It was pure fun to create and test them.

– sound
Until last moments I didnt know if I will manage to create audio. I always left this for the end, because audio is my weakest point in whole game developing. Happily there was still enough time to create some simple theme.

What went wrong:

– programming
Because it was my first time with libGDX there were some problems. I couldn’t generate TextureAtlas (still don’t know why). I had big problem with adding a font and then scaling and I ended up using standard font. But all of those issues was caused by my lack of knowlege in lib. Besides libGDX troubles I had to face my old nemesis with was collision detection. I had big problem with proper collisions for crates, character and map when it was all working together.

– controls
The worst thing about my game (as I can tell from comments) are controls. During development I knew there was bad and I wanted to change it but only if I still had some time left. Character animations was directly connected to them and I was too afraid I will break everything.

Conlusion:

I must say that when I run game with graphics, and sound for the very first time it was a beautiful moment and I couldn’t stop smiling playing. And for moments like these I participate in LD and I will participate as long as I can. Overall I’m very happy with how final game looks like, and with all the comments I have received. Thank you all!

If you haven’t playd my game you can do it HERE

LD28

I am in!

Again I can’t miss the great opportunity to make a game which is Ludum Dare. This will be my 6th time but I’m almost excited as it was my first time. Unfortunately I wouldn’t had whole weekend to work due to some responsibilities but I hope to pull off some smaller, simpler game.

  • Language: Java (libGDX)
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Graphics: Paint.NET, Tiled
  • Sound: SFXR

I wish you all good luck and have fun!
