LD 44

Finished - first compo!

I didn't think I'd finish it in time, but here we are. I made a strange and short text-based adventure about a society that's simultaneously post- and the most- capitalist. There's no music, but I was able to create some art for it, and I had a lot of fun making it!

Mostly I can't wait for the next one, I guess?

Second compo DONE!

I'm super proud of myself and excited that I managed to pull this game together for the compo.

It's called Aphantasia, and it's about helping folks who don't have any visual memories by giving them mementos - paintings - based off of their descriptions.

The whole focal point of the game is a blank canvas, so I think it fits the "start with nothing" theme quite well.

Anyway, I'm excited about it, I'm really pleased with the art and the music I created for the game. Less so the actual code but hey, it's my first Love2D game, we'll get there. I didn't realize that keeping track of game state was going to be such an... adventure...

It's also pretty fun to mess around with the canvas to create weird surreal versions of memories (like in the screenshot above)... I wanted to build in a bit of an easter egg to point folks in that direction but I didn't have time.

Thanks for playing!!

Excited for #4!

I woke up this morning and it felt like CHRISTMAS when I remembered that LD starts tonight! I've participated the past few jams, this will be my 4th. And between the previous jam and this one, I've actually switched careers from v sad design middle manager to brand-new developer, thanks in part to the adrenaline-rush coding that I learned to love by participating in these jams.

I'm thinking about using Adventure Creator this time, as it's an excuse to learn it and I've been wanting to for ages. I'll probably stick to pixel art using Pixaki, or janky non-pixel-art in Procreate. And I'm participating solo, so hopefully in the compo, if I can pull it together in time.

I'm sorry in advance to my Animal Crossing villagers for this weekend's upcoming neglect!!!

I'm in! What counts as "base code"?

Excited to participate in my 6th LDJam ever/in a row!

I'll be using Pixaki for art, Medley for music, and probably Love2D for code.

Question for y'all about the compo rule about allowing "base code."

Let's say that I have created a barebones game template/structure built with Love2D (simple top-down movement system, camera, inventory, etc.). Because I have. :-) Is that too much base code to use in the compo?

Finished my 10th Ludum Dare (in a row, too!)

Four years ago I made my first game ever for LD 43 - a weird lil text-based adventure that Got. Me. ADDICTED to making games. Fast forward to now, I've learned to code (I knew a bit before then but not much), now work full-time as a software developer (not for games but that's ok!), and still absolutely love making games. I am nothing but grateful to Ludum Dare for getting me started on not only my biggest and very favoritest hobby, but my actual career path. I also love playing others' games and rating them - everyone here is so encouraging and supportive and constructive. Anyway, my game this LD is called Word Salad and is about growing wordfruit to create a story for the big county fair! Plus, there's a dog with cool catchphrases!

Missed last LD, excited for this one!

I missed the last LD - the first one since I started with LD43. I missed it because my dog got sick and died quite suddenly that weekend. She has featured prominently as a character in a couple of my jam games:

I miss her so much, but I think she'll continue on as a character in my future jam games as well. Her goofy smelly legacy lives on! I'm really looking forward to creating another game this weekend!

Postmortem - creating an alien language in 48 hours or less!

Hi all!

For my game, Adventures in Xenolinguistics, I invented an entire alien language. Results were mixed, but I wrote up a postmortem on how it went and what I'd like to change. Check it (the game or the blog) out if you're interested in conlangs or language puzzles!
