LD 40

My first LD

Hello, everyone! I'm also going to participate in LD for the first time. And I already know I will be away for whole saturday (at least I can think about the theme during the saturday). I will be running out of time one way or another so who cares, it'll be fun and I'm looking forward!

My theme suggestions: - Unseen - Space - Connected

Compo entry submitted

It's done! My first LD entry submitted in time, ubelievable :) And it's more funny than I expected before implementing this! I hope you will like it (and I hope the windows build works fine :fingers_crossed:) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/im-not-here

Not bad for the first LD!

Hey, results are online and I would like to thank you all for your ratings. It was my first Ludum Dare and it was awesome!

Since I never participated in LD I didn't know what to expect. Before the event I wanted to be in the first half. After I submitted my game I was quite satisfied with what I've done during the weekend (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/im-not-here). Feedback was positive and I was even thinking of the first 100 (at least in one category). And my game actually made it! 67th in the Fun category, cool! Playing games should be fun, right? So it’s one of the most important categories, right? :D And 148th overall out of 1040 in Compo is not bad at all either.

It's a shame I didn't play the most games in the first 100 (I've rated 78 games).. but I will catch it :)

Thanks and see you in LD41!

Of course I'm in!

Do I want to work tirelessly whole sunny spring weekend on a game for fun and no profit? You bet your ass!

As the last time I'm using:

  • Audacity & Bosca ceoil

Good luck!

PuzzleGolf: after the first day

Just woke up to the second day. I'm making a puzzle game mashed with mini-golf! Check out the progress:

Morning of day 2..

Hey jammers,

I'm making a kind of game I wanted to make for some time. It's definitely overscoped for 48h jam but I have really great time making it. Regardles of the state of final game I'm already happy with it.

I am making turn based strategy ("into the breach" style) with procedurally generated terrain, with 3 different unit types and simple AI opponent. Gameplay is mixed with battle royale games - combat area is shrinking over time so you are running out of space soon. Crazy idea for 2 day jam. But progress looks promissing:

day_1.gif

Today's plan - make all animations, make sounds, decide about art style, make graphics, polish, fix bugs and hopefully make music.. a ton of work, so let's get started! :coffee:

Cartoon Tactics

Hi jammers!

Running out of space? Theme of my game was more like Running out of scope and running out of time (which is kind of recurring theme for every LD). But it's done! And it works, it's procedurally generated and it has "AI"!

* Try Cartoon Tactics *, you can play it in browser.

Who am I to miss a Ludum Dare?

Of course I'm in! It will be my 4th Ludum Dare and 7th game jam, unbelievable! I remember my first game jam like it was yesterday...

Btw. before it begins, check out my last (non-LD) jam game which was my first jam-winning game! https://jhysek.itch.io/reincarnation-of-the-ninja

Day one

Hey jammers!

I'm really happy with my progress so I'd like to share it! I'm making a platformer where you have to sacrifice own body to progress in game. I didn't make music in time in my almost every jam game, so I started with music this time. Basic functionality is done, music is done, graphics mostly done.. now audio, more levels, enemies, puzzles, menus, testing, polishing... oh, I need go back to the work, enjoy the video, good luck and have at least as much fun as I have.

Free like a flappy bird!

Oh boy, that's gonna be fun!

Mini Post Mortem

This Ludum Dare I wanted to make something simple and have a lot of time for polishing. So I was thinking about making a platformer since I've made a platformer a few times before and even won the Jimjam with one recently (https://itch.io/jam/jimjam-2/results).

* Day 1 *

Since in my part of the world Ludum Dare starts at saturday at 3:00 AM, I didn't wait for the theme announcement and went to bed early. I woke up about 7:30 AM, 4.5 hours after start. LD webpage was already full of promissing progress. I started thinking and after about 30 minutes I got the idea. I decided to make a platformer where you are able to possess your enemies. I was implementing similar idea in one of mine unpublished games so this wasn't entirely new for me as well.

I about 11:30 AM I got prototype of basic movement and possessing functionality:

dayem1/emtimeem11/em22emtake2/emsmaller.gif

After that I started with a music - at all my previous jams I made music few hours before deadline or I didn't make it at all. So I started with that early this time. Music set the atmosphere so I made some fitting graphic elements. Music is inspired by the Sin City theme which gave me direction for graphics.

4:00 AM - first version of character with animations, tiles and simple lighting effect.

dayem1/emtimeem16/em00_smaller.gif

7:00 PM - playing with postprocessing effects (it's never too early for polishing;) and created background and a sawblade. It looked like I have Limbo mixed with the Super meat boy instead of Sin City :)

dayem1/emtimeem19/em00_smaller.gif

I fixed light occluders, polished tiles and the character. So I had everything for making a tutorial level

https://youtu.be/dg_HXc4XpBY

It wasn't even midnight of the first day. I got an idea of flying bird which you could maybe possess as well if I got time for it.. And this is what I had about 1AM in sunday, 2 hours before the halftime of LD.

https://youtu.be/vecr0DU51Qk

I thought I'm just playing with stuff because I'm tired and not making important features (such as shooting!;) But later it turned out that possessing a bird is one of the most surprising and memorable moment in the game - just look at some twitch clips, it's priceless - Elysia Griffin https://clips.twitch.tv/SingleTangentialKumquatArsonNoSexy?ttcontent=chatcard&ttmedium=twitchchat , - Neilrankin1984 https://www.twitch.tv/neilrankin1984/clip/BitterSquareDragonfruitNomNom?filter=clips&range=7d&sort=time , - Tim Rusick https://clips.twitch.tv/AmorphousRudeThymeAMPEnergy

* Day 2 *

Next day I felt tired already but the coffee done it's job :) Nevertheless I was stuck in polishing frenzy and despite I had no real level I made reeealy pretty menuscreen :) And also decided that menu needs it's own music!

https://youtu.be/ayINtl1X4Jk

It was 2:30PM already! So after that I had no time for recording progress, it was too hectic.. bugfixing, polishing, bugfixing and oh a level design and polishing, bugfixing... oh I need a shooting mechanics.. you can imagine :) Long story short, I fixed the most bugs on the list (not all of them though), third level is a bit sloppy but I made it in time!

You can play the game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/soul-traveller

Enjoy!

How to create nice lighting effect in Godot engine

Lot of people say that they like a lighting effect in my game Soul Traveller.

So I'd like to show you, how it can be made in Godot engine. It's really easy.

1) Let's create a light sprite first:

light.gif

You can make a different shapes, for example you can draw a circular sector as a field of view for some stealth game etc...

2) To cast shadows, you need to have LightOccluder2D on everything which is not transparent. In case of my game I just added light occluder to a wall tile. Since I have only one wall tile it's pretty easy. Export the tileset and use it in the tilemap.

godotemoccluder/emlarger.gif

3) And the last thing, you have to add node Light2D and set Texture to light sprite. Then turn on the shadows, which you can do by checking an attribute of Light2D. There are few more settings, but in my game it's just this. I've inserted Light2D as a child node of Camera2D which is child of the player, so the light moves with the current player.

godot_light.gif

And that's basically it! Really nice effect for a few minutes of work, isn't it?

If you never tried Godot engine, give it a chance. It's free and it's great (at least for 2D games - I never made any 3D game so I cannot judge this part).

Post-compo version of Soul Traveller

Hey jammers!

I've published post-compo version of my game Soul Traveller.

It has better collision boxes, faster possessing + few minor fixes but basically it contains all you guys wantend in you great feedback! Except more levels unfortunately - but wait for the next upgrade, follow me here or on the Itch.io if you don't want to miss it.

You can download it on the itch.io: https://jhysek.itch.io/soul-traveller

The Gold Digger - manipulate men to reach your goals

Hey Jammers!

I have finished my compo entry yesterday - The Gold Digger.

It's a puzzle platformer where you play woman who manipulates men around the level to reach her shallow goals:D The game has 6 levels, first three serve as introduction of game mechanics.

Check it out, have fun and don't take it too seriously :)

LD44 - The Gold-digger 29.04.2019 2em55/em46.png

It has HTML version, but for better performance I'd recommend to download game for your favourite OS. It's available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

Have fun!
