Hey LD jammers!

If you're looking for a post-LD game jam, I'm hosting the 2nd annual Music Game Jam from Sep 1-15 (200+ signups!), where you can make any music/audio-themed game you want in two weeks!

Last year's games included music-based tower defense, pitch-controlling platforming, and guitar shop management, and you could make anything from a game for the blind to a music horror game!

Slay The Slime - Too Much Loot

Hello everyone!

Hope you're having great time with Ludum Dare!

After getting so many good opinions about my game I decided that it needs to be expanded. The most important thing that it lacks right now is progression . I started adding a progression map with islands. You can see it on screenshot below. Each island will have few levels with boss at the end. You will need to kill few enemies on each of the levels as is in current version with only one level. I’m also thinking about adding new enemies and lots of new weapons.

Current progress:

Our latest installment of Nuclear Arms is in and it's a good one. We had a good time making it, but we have an even better time getting other people to ;D.

We messed up a bit on the final boss design and made it not entirely obvious when you can hit him. But most people seem to have been able to figure out how to do it as far as we can tell. It's got a rocking main theme and we got some pretty great art. So come check it out!

Behind the art of Demonic Digestion

The idea of a japanese-themed style for Demonic Digestion came suddenly, and I ended up sticking with it not knowing exactly why.

Being an anime & manga nerd and a karateka, I've always been passionate about Japan and its culture. Because of this, I didn't have to dig into deep research before being able to pull out a convincing style, that gave the game a distinctive feel.

Also, there are already some well-known games that heavily reference a traditional japanese style, and I was especially influenced by Okami and Zelda the Wind Waker.

Here are the first concepts for our game: concept.jpg concept2.jpg

But for me it wasn't simply a strategic move: I had a lot of fun quoting Japan's traditional symbolism and its repertory of colorful demons, called yokai. I tried referencing existing yokai as much as I could. For example, the boss from our game explicitly (and very roughly) quotes the gashadokuro demon as it was depicted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi:

skeleton.png

Here are some other ukyo-e that show where some choices in our game came from: - http://www.japantimes.co.jp/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/z4-haruhara-specter-c-20140711.jpg - https://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/45hiroshigecat-crossing-to-eat.jpg?quality=80

I hope you enjoyed this small behind the scenes of Demonic Digestion, and also I hope I tickled your curiosity towards some aspects of Japan's tradition :)

Thanks for the read, and remember to see all this in action by checking out Demonic Digestion!

MindLapse claymation

For MindLapse, the sprites were based on photographs of clay: wall.jpg pilar.jpg

I spent too much time on the environment, because I wasn't convinced it look right. When finally showing it to the team, they said it was good. Inspired by that, I made this ornament, based on an ancient greek sculpture: esculaep.jpg

The character was easier, as we already had a working placeholder graphic, drawn in Paint: placeholder.gif

Because we had limited time, I modeled all the parts separately: head.jpg cape.jpg arm.jpg

And animated them with Animate: walk.gif monster.gif

At the end, I was a bit disappointed how small everything turned out to be: level.png

Still, the cover art turned out nice, and it was a fun project to work on: cover_640x512.png

No Vacancy - Art Post

artpost.png

Hello, since a few people showed interest, I'm putting together some posts on the art of our game, No Vacancy.

Today I'm going to talk about the prop modelling. For all our assets I used Blender and Substance Painter.

props.png

These are the props that correspond to the "room" assets. As you can see, I used the model of the main character to make sure my proportions are always correct within the game setting.

propswire.png

Here you see the wireframe. I tried to make them as low poly as possible but the round parts had to remain round...you can see on the cofee table for example, it's a lot more dense than the rest.

propsUVs.png

This is how I packed the UVs. Most symmetrical objects and repeatable stuff, like the stair steps, for example were UV'd in the same place to save space. Also I used this trick I learned recently to see all UVs of all selected objects at once.

uvtrick.png

This works best if you use Blender Internal and have the faces of all objects assigned to the same texture, or else not every object will show. It's a little annoying to use, but useful anyway.

All my props have a low res and "hi res" version. It's not like super sculpture in Zbrush hi-res, but it's enough to use a few features in substance Painter.

lovshi.png

The difference is not that great, but the important points are: 1. Add subdivision modifier/turbosmooth to make the normals soft. 2. Extra loops at hard edges while having smoothing on. 3. Add details that will not alter the silhoette that you could bake into a low res, like the buttons and detail in the armrests. 4. Separate every piece in a different object.

hires.png

After I've made a batch of props that I could UV into a single map with their respective hi res versions, the models are ready for texturing. I will show that on another post though, since this got a bit too long.

We would love to keep working on this.

if we get enough ratings, we would want to continue working on our game post-LD, this includes: - adding new planet types/variations - new mechanics - difficulty options - Linux Support ;)

if you would like to see this happen, give a review!

Who's got text games?

For our first jam with Indie Speed Run, a few years back, the Wren Pirates spent so much time on graphics that we only completed about six pages of our visual novel. For this, our first Ludum Dare, we took the opposite tack with an all-text interactive story. What other Inform, Twine, and Ren’Py games did y’all make or play for LD42? What engines should we try next?

So far, I’ve played and enjoyed Crowded Dungeon, Bardolf’s Curse (URL without the apostrophe), and the poignant Unfamiliar.

Conectivity update

Hello everyone. After we finished the game, we realized it was horible to play it. We ended up implementing a lobby to make it easier for players to join the game and for the host to start the game.

Making a LAN game was not a easy task like we thought it would be. Even with 3 programmers, we still had a struggle in making everything work like we wanted.

Room Tetris Post mortem (Priliminary)

Ah... The new Ludum dare crawled in so unexpectedly.

I didn't even finish the slaughter this time round. But I was eager to take part. I even had an idea to make a livestream sort of with Theme announcement. (Unfortunately the stream died at the announcement time as my OBS seem to have a thing with opening new browser windows while streaming...)

When I originally saw the theme I thought of a concept of a hosting service tycoon game where you have to manage a company that provides hosting service for videos or other content. Basically you have to maintain some servers making sure they don't run out of disk space, or bandwidth, and don't die taking all the user data with them. And them the server themselves take up room in your "office" you you eventually run out of srver slots and need to expand the office.

And to get this all running I had an idea to have a... kind of real world simulation under the hood, where the game would actually spawn and track entities, like ContentCreators, and viewers, have them like or dislike each other, ragequit or trend... (Yes, I attempted to dig into ECS...) but when on Sunday Morning I finally had a prototype with two entities running alongside each other, they would... not drop the game FPS as they were handled in separate threads, but they would have had cycles of a few seconds, meaning the simulation would not be accurate enough.

And on top of this I realized that the player does not have any agency over how those entities interact, making all this hard work... basically produce the same result any RNG would... So I rage-ditched this idea and started working on a new one.

The "little" problem was the fact that there were only circa 14 hours left to compo deadline. So I buckled up and started working.

A new concept was born pretty quickly. Putting a lot of stuff into a room. So I opened MsPaint and started blocking this idea out. I drew a contour of a room, and added a couple of windows in it. This brought up a question - how do we use those windows in a game? And to answer this a concept was born to restrict placement of items so windows are not blocked. Then I drew a path across the room, connecting the windows and the door, and decided to declare it unblockable as well. And the rest of the space was broken int a set of tetris-like blocks.

After looking at this allocation for a bit I decided to make sure all items are touching the path. Rearranged some blocks to make this condition true and this is how the game concept was born.

Programming wise the game turned out to be pretty simple. I didn't create a tile table in memory, instead the tiles were game objects in world space. The items had a set of control spots that ray-traced straight down to check if there is a tile, and if so - is it occupied.

The items themselves were also not spawned at runtime (though it may seem so). They were actually created in the gameworld, and are onlu enabled as objects when you pickthem from the list. (And it is actually the list items a that are spawned at runtime. Basically every item on Start creates a list item, and hides itself. This was an uncomfortably coding-light approach for me to take. But I really had no time to spare. So I threw together what was working and ran with it.

They I went to creating 3D assets. And over the past few attempts I can really tell that I am getting a hang of it. Not only was I able to create some graphical assets that were... kind of solid, but I also managed to texture them. Nothing fancy like normal texturing I tied for MazeCrawler, but there were a few handpainted textures, and one generated texture of wood I used for... basically everything.

The first big assed was the room, and UV unwrapping of it was... a nightmare to be honest. And when afer having the asset created in blender initially I found out that I managed to not save the texture image, I felt... kind of relieved that the UV maps were intact. However when I threw the room into the scene, I realized that you are supposed to see something through the windows and the door. The windows were easy - just a big green plane to emulate the grass did the trick. Door was a bit trickier though. But the solution gave itself away pretty easily. I just cloned the doo, rotated it 180 degrees, and slapped it door to door so you could see through the door another room.

Then I started making items. I started with a couple big ones like the Fridge, and Wardrobe. Then made a pile of boxes as one mesh... and realized that I am not going to do the unwrapping for them if I am to make the game on time... though the time was running really short by that time. Instead I opted out to make a single box (barrel, cardboard box, and a plank) as separate items with shapes simple enough to unwrap. Then bade blender generate a wooden texture for me, then used texture paint to make portions of this generated texture lighter or darker, and started unwrapping all items onto one texture atlas. This way I had only a few materials used for all items on the scene. (5 to be exact). Ans slightly adjusting the positions of UVs of different sides of the box, and their scales, helped to up the variety of wooden patterns. So definitelly this is a tick to remember for future.

And then I looked at the split of the tetris blocks, and started creating piles of objects to fill them in. I started by setting up quite a few unique ones, but then ended up just duplicating some of them 2 or 3 times. Not because I was running out of time (by that point I was 2 hours overdue for Compo anyway) but because I was getting sleepy, and I had to go to work on monday.

Summary:

Well... No music or sounds again. Which is getting a pretty bad trend for me now. Next time I might even start by making some sounds, and center the game around them... ((Though this is probably a very bad idea...))

However the game turned out to be... not solid. It is still mssing some important bits. For example I wanted to show a "Waifu picture" with a speech ballon commenting on your actions, but... just didn't have enough time to draw the portrait, or program conditions for them to appear. The UI is also only unity basic. And the screen width optimisation is... nowhere to be found. I only hope that people will not try to play it on a screen too narrow for it to be playable.

But I am rally proud of myself for basically making a game in just under 20 hours. Yes I got a bit exhausted by this, and getting yourself into a corner to them heroically get out of it is usually not considered something to be proud of, but I did manage to fend off the temptation to give up and not finish a game.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed reading it an maybe even found something useful of it.

cool art!

Coming soon to VoidStalkers

I should be getting back on my main project, and I tried, but some things missing from VoidStalkers have been bugging me.

Look forward to:

  • 8-way shooting with d-pad or 360-degree shooting with analog
  • Choice to shoot without strafing
  • Regaining some space after finishing a wave
  • More enemy tactics hopefully

These updates will be available to try on the builds page at GitLab. After the rating period they will be published on the itch.io page.

Ludum Delivery: Post-Compo version, and a challenge ;)

ld42empostcompo/emgameplay_short.gif

During this week I've polished my original submission with new items, some bugfixes, better level progression, better PRNG for new pieces, an updated controls screen, and some niceties here and there. I'd love for you to try it and give me your feedback, especially if you played the original submission.

This time, besides of the classic endless mode, I've included a secret 100 Trucks mode. It can be activated by clicking in the truck sprite in the main menu (see gif below). The challenge is to send 100 trucks without losing. You can even try a perfect game if you send 100 perfect trucks (completely filled).

Slaughterhouse bug fixes

2018-08-13 (6).png

Thank you everyone who has already played for your feedback. I have taken a look at the collider issues and found that while the dead animals are not able to hurt you.. the colliders on the ones still alive are so large they stick through the dead ones as they push towards you. This is what was causing the damage from nowhere. (also the cow had an attack size almost as large as its whole body)

All damage collides have been reduced in size Also note the side rails the player cannot move through now affect the animals as well, so the “Herding” mechanic now works as I originally intended. UI enlarged slightly.

For those who haven't played it yet, the Windows build is available here.

Days to come.

I've made a post-jam version of Days to Come. This new version has some new items, new mechanics, Traditional Turn-Based (TTB) combat style, new graphics and is more balanced. Play and tell me what you think!

First Post-LD Version out

I finally managed to iron out some problems of our rushed game this week. Mostly I've reworked the camera controls, which are a lot different now, but still kind of quirky in my opinion. If any of you guys has time to test it out a bit and give some feedback, it would be appreciated. Furthermore I've spend 2 days in adding waves, which was totally necessary and 2 hours in a basic menu. At least we have a "Quit"-Button now... I've also tweaked some balancing and added some much needed output (like building costs and error messages, which tell you why things can't be build). I think, that the game is now in a playable, though still far, far from finished state.

Postmortem?

IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED COUNTDOWN ALREADY, YOU CAN PLAY IT HERE!

Cover Image

Note: This is a re-post of the postmortem on Countdown's Itch.io page, which you can read here.

Game Issues and Misunderstandings

Although I feel Countdown turned out quite nicely considering Ludum Dare's time constraints, there were some things that could have been executed better. For example, the initial release of the game, 1.0.1, had PlayerPrefs issues when the game started up. PlayerPrefs are Unity's method of storing player data, and in my case I was using it to store data on the player's color preferences. (See the “Change Colours” menu)

When the game was first played on Windows or Linux (There was no WebGL version until 1.0.3), all of the hexagons were black, rendering the game unplayable. This was because no PlayerPrefs were assigned yet. Although the game may have seemed broken when booted, the bug could be fixed by entering the “Change Colours” menu and pressing “Reset.” The bug was removed in version 1.0.2 and above by resetting the hexagons to the default color set if no PlayerPrefs were detected. Further issues were fixed in 1.0.3 and 1.0.4, and a WebGL version was added in 1.0.3. The final version of the game is 1.0.4, which is available on all platforms.

When watching the let’s plays of the game, I realized that another mistake I made in the development of Countdown is that I should have made the core game mechanics a little bit more clear, and had instructions available to the player if they got lost. I spent all of the 48 hours of Ludum Dare 42 working on the game mechanics and polish, but I completely forgot to leave instructions on how to play! I'll remember this for future games I create.

Finally, almost all of the comments on Ludum Dare mentioned one thing: the controls. The controls of the game were jumpy, spastic, and unpredictable. There are a couple reasons why this was the case.

The first reason is the geometry of the game. Each angle in a hexagon is 120 degrees, so when the player adds force to the side of the hexagon and gets "stuck," there is a lot of accumulated potential energy since my movement system is using Physics and Rigidbody, not direct changes to the Transform of the player. Just a slight movement can catapult the player across the map.

The second reason is that Physics and Rigidbody can be a bit uncontrollable at times, and since the game was created in a jam I did not have much time to fine tune it.

Ratings and Feedback

I was overwhelmed to see how many responses my game got on Ludum Dare! As of today, I got more than 30 comments, 58.625 ratings, and two let's plays of the game! (Thank you @jupiter-hadly and @saoi-games, I really appreciate it.) The feedback was the most rewarding aspect of my first game jam experience. Thank you.

Postmortem?

Although the development of Countdown has ceased, the game is not completely dead. In the next six months I probably will release a sequel, Countdown 2, to Itch.io. It will fix many of the problems, glitches, and missing features of the original Countdown. Gameplay mechanics that will be included will be an infinite gameplay space, skippable death cinematic, instructions, tutorials, and possibly more randomization and customization settings. I'll post a blog post on this page and ldjam.com when Countdown 2 is released to Itch.io.

Thank you so much for playing my game, I can't even put into words how much it means to me.

Cheers!

Gameplay Data!!!

I've included some basic gameplay analytics in our game (so we can learn better level design, and find where people dropped out). Now we have data for the first 30 players!

Analytics.png

  • Total Deaths: 1683 deaths
  • Shortest Play Time: 41 seconds
  • Longest Play Time: 1 hour 47 minutes
  • Average Play Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Play Time: 10 hours

If you'd like to join the data set you can play the game here!

Carter's Crates Postmortem

LD42gif.gif

You're a busy person! You're trying out lots of games, rating them and providing good feedback. So I will be as concise as I can be for this postmortem.

What is Carter's Crates?

You play as a warehouse worker named Carter who has the duty of sorting different colored crates and sending them down chutes of the matching color. You do this by picking up stacks of crates and moving them around the play area. You must keep the boxes from stacking up to the ceiling. For the theme "Running Out of Space", the idea is that as more and more crates come in, you have less space to organize them and it becomes more difficult to maneuver around the warehouse.

What went well?
  • Finished on time. The core gameplay was programmed a bit after the first 24 hours, which gave me the rest of the compo to create sprites, animations, and sounds. I also had time to give the game some extra details like camera shakes, a global scoreboard, a box reticle, and a warning indicator when boxes were stacked too high. For future Ludum Dares, I'd like to keep scoping out my games for the core functionality to be done in the first 24 hours, and everything extra for the other 24 hours.
  • People think the game's design was good and put together well. This is the general consensus I have gleamed from the feedback I have received. The core idea behind the game seems easy for people to understand. There has also not been any bug reports. Sweet!
What went wrong?
  • The game might be too challenging. I err on the side of making difficult games over easy games because I like them more. But this is not the first time that I have received feedback that one of my LD entries is too difficult. I think I easily fall into the trap where a game dev thinks their game's difficulty is fine but any other person playing finds it too hard. I should keep this in mind for the next LD.
  • The controls are frustrating. This comes as a surprise for me, but many players have mentioned that the controls are tricky and hard to get used to. I tried to minimize the number of buttons needed to play, and I added a sort of reticle to indicate to players where they were picking up and dropping off boxes, but clearly more work was needed.
  • You can get stuck between two stacks of boxes. This is just a consequence of the game's rules, but I should have designed around it. If you get stuck, either you wait until you lose, or you restart the game. Not a good experience for the player.

There's more valuable feedback that players have given me in the game's page, but these are the bigger bullet points. Thanks for reading! If you'd like to try out the game, you can click the link below.
