Hey there! I have something I wanted to share since the "THIS GAME HAS FEW RATING BUT STILL WON"-controversy we had last LD (LD and controversies exist in symbiosis). It's not something I need a fix for or I want to point fingers. I just want to speak up about this, now - a bit later -, rather than during the anger of all people who would have loved to see another entry win this or that category.
Last LD I didn't have much time to play a lot of games (LD has an effect on your productivity at school and work the days after), so I rated only 13 games in total. But I did give them a proper amount of feedback on each of the rating categories. I'm not saying that my ratings and reviews are better, but the developers seem to appreciated it a lot, and I even had some more in-depth conversations with some of the devs on the problems I pointed out, which I find both enjoyable and useful. In the same time I could probably have rated 100 games with just saying "Great game, I enjoyed it a lot!" and posting daily challenges ("HELP ME GET TO 100 VOTES") to attract people to my game. Again, if you want to do that, I won't stop you. I did it too once and, unfortunately, it helped immensely with the amount of ratings.
But me rating only a few games resulted in getting only slightly over 20 ratings. Which is fine, it's about twice as much as I gave. There is a system in place that gives me more ratings for my "quality" reviews. It's dependent on people liking good reviews, so if you see one, even if you don't agree with everything, just give it a <3 if you feel the writer put a lot of thought into it.
This is not my problem, though. The problem is that I got first place in Innovation. I was really happy about that result, especially because I got so few ratings back. However people were really angry that games with a bare minimum ratings got a first place. This made me feel really sad about the result, even though I didn't feel most of my ratings were that out of place.
This kind of behaviour really makes me want to post a ton of ads and challenges, and spent the least amount of effort on rating games, just to get more ratings. Even though I think the learning process is the core of what Ludum Dare is, which I think requires Quality feedback, rather than a large Quantity of it.
I just wanted to say this, I don't think we need another controversial discussion. And as a training (sneaky sellout incoming) you hit that <3 if you like this post, even if you don't agree with it.
