LD 38 April 21–24, 2017

My Base Code for LD 38

Once again I will be using my base code that I have built up since LD 26. It is written in JavaScript and can be used to create HTML5/canvas games. You can find the base code on github: https://github.com/ZYXer-/base-code-2d

Features:
– a simple game loop
– mouse/keyboard input processing
– image/sound/webfont preloading

Additional classes for:
– playing sounds (using SoundManager2)
– loading and displaying PNG fonts
– particle systems
– pathfinding (using A*)
– image processing class to generate 8-bit style graphics
– utility functions for procedural map generation

Since the last compo I have added some new features:
– you can choose whether the canvas should automatically resize to fit the browser window and whether the content should be scaled
– class for objects with basic physics (position, velocity, acceleration)
– a text object that gives you more functionality than the standard fillText() function.

I also did some major refactoring, putting all demo functionality into a separate class.

I’m distributing the code under the GPL2 license, so feel free to use any part of it for your own project. And please – like always – report any bugs 😉

15 years felt like a good time to celebrate. From our humble beginnings in 2002, all the way to today. It's been an amazing ride, and I want to thank you all for taking part in Ludum Dare all these years. It's been a privilege and a pleasure to be your host, M.C., and everything else LD needs me to be.

At the Game Developers Conference this year, we were invited by GitHub to celebrate with them. They went all out for us, even giving us a space to show off some amazing games created in Ludum Dare.

Ludum Dare GitHub Party 2017

I wasn't kidding when I said they went all out (those computers and controllers were brand new).

And to put a huge grin on my face , they named a drink after me.

It was an amazing night (here's a few more photos). I need to give a HUGE shout-out and thank-you to GitHub for having us, and being incredible and amazing.

While I was at GDC, I also got the chance to finally meet Geoff in person, the guy that started Ludum Dare. It's something we've been meaning to do, and finally did 15 years later. I'll send you over to the work-in-progress /history page to see us posing for a photo. Geoff hasn't been involved in a long time, but it's thanks to him that this whole thing got started 15 years ago. It was great finally hang out, catch up, and chat about this crazy thing we created.

I have one more thing.

Before GDC, I reached out and found a team to put together a mini Ludum Dare Documentary. Something to help celebrate our big 15 year milestone. I did my best to coordinate, and find as many of you at the show as I could. After all, Ludum Dare is about you.

So without further ado, I'd like to preset the keynote for Ludum Dare 38.

A HUGE thanks to Marcel Baarsch (@dmitrix), Cosmo Villanueva, Shaun Lin, and Hugh Toxqui for making this.

That's almost it for me.

We'll be rolling out blog posting, signups, and a few other key features very soon. To keep this post from getting too long, I'll claim the top comment for my status update. But long story short, I'm making sure that I've bullet-proofed everything that needs bullet-proofing, 'cause once the posting gate opens there's no going back.

Another HUGE thanks to Zak West (@zwrawr) whose been a huge help this week. Him and many others have been helping us find and fix bugs over on the GitHub repo. Right now you should be focusing on making a game this weekend. But if you want to help us out between events, you're welcome to come join us.

Stay tuned! Ludum Dare 38 begins soon!

I’m In!

I’ve only done one ludum dare so far. I’m so excited to do another!

I’ll be using Unity, LMMS, GraphicsGale, and sfxr. WOo hoo!

LD38 – Time to Get Ready

Wasn’t sure if I was going to participate again but here’s to a frantic weekend.

Tools:

  • Unity 5
  • SFXR
  • GIMP
  • Blender (maybe)
  • GitKraken

I have put together a basic main menu that has changeable controls and adjustable volume. I’ve made a public git project with the contents of my base template. Anyone can take and use it if they wish to. It just makes it so you don’t waste hours fiddling with UI.

Musician Looking for a team

Hi, I’m a musician looking to do some colab. If anybody need some songs and SFXs, just call me.

I can do some chiptunes or real recordings. Checkout some songs that I made on other jams: https://soundcloud.com/schneider-souza/sets

Good luck everyone!

Hey man, I love your stuff. (especially in love with your metal remixes *o*) If you still haven’t found a team, I’d love to collaborate with you :)

I’m In!

Won’t be able to do this Ludum Dare with my usual people, so I will hopefully be participating in the Compo instead of the Jam this time around.

Tools:

  1. Unity 5.6
  2. Paint.NET
  3. Blender
  4. Audacity

Good luck everyone!

Obligatory “I’m In”

Hey everyone! Just another usual post for entering Ludum Dare. This should be my 6th time around…

Tools:  Unity, Blender, GIMP, SFXR, LMMS

I have no idea how much I can do this Ludum Dare… I’ll try to make something small this time.

Now this is kind of a side request but in case anyone reading this post before it’s lost in the feed is interested in helping me out, I’m lacking solid feedback on the current state of my LD37 game, Super Battle Cycle. Leave a comment if you like, thank you!

That’s all I have to say, thanks for reading. Hope you guys are all prepared for a great weekend!

I’m in! Again!

And for my second Ludum Dare there are some quite heavy changes to my workflow. In fact I haven’t even used the engine that I’ll work with – but it sure will work out eventually… Right? Right? (*quiet sobbing*).

So again this time I’ll use another engine. I switch from the awesome LibGDX framework to the (hopefully) even more awesome Godot game engine. What’s the reason you might ask. Well see: developing with LibGDX feels really great to me. I like the programming centric development and I’m also pretty fluent in Java – so naturally this framework just works for me. At least that’s what I thought prior to my first Ludum Dare. Then I tried to create a scene which was not tile based (hint: you better not do that with LibGDX – at least at the moment). I tried a few solutions: Overlap2D (abandoned project…), VisEditor (also abandoned atm…), Tiled and R.U.B.E.. Just none of them really worked or felt good to use. So I stood up and I yelled at the sky: “Why! Oh god why do you hate me!”. I ended up pretty much hard coding the coordinates of all my sprites which luckily were not too many to handle it and I swore to me to go out and find a solution which just works. And ideally one which has all tools neatly organised in a single window. That’s how after a long journey of comparing different engines I ended up with Godot which seems to pack alot of awesome features for 2D! I will learn it while developing my game for this Ludum Dare so I expect alot of chaos but it will hopefully turn out well. I wish everyone and especially the first timers the best of luck and I pray that one day we will have a great level editor for LibGDX.

Have fun! Anudin out. – Anudin
