JavaScript 2D Framework

Hey Everyone,

I’ve been using GameMaker Studio for quite a few years now, I’m very comfortable and familiar with it but lately I’ve been running in to some issues. Their newest engine (Game Maker Studio 2) still has a few bugs and I’ve had to rewrite the same game 3 times now because every time I do it I run in to a new bug that corrupts my game. I’ve already bought the HTML5 license for it and am definitely not going to ditch it altogether, I really enjoy Game Maker Studio and will want to use it in the future… just after they’ve fixed it.

For the past couple days I’ve been casually looking around at other engines, I’ve been using game engines all my gamedev life so naturally that’s what I gravitated to. But lately I’ve been watching a lot of the coding challenges from The Coding Train on YouTube where they solely use JavaScript to make their games. It looked pretty cool, writing all the code from scratch and what better way to create web games is to directly use JavaScript? Because I’m not doing it through an engine sure it’s going to be a little more difficult but in the end I feel like it would give better results because I can specifically optimize it for the web.

I’ve already googled for what are the best JavaScript frameworks for creating web-based games but I’m seeing mixed results and thought I’d come directly to the gamedev community. All I really need is a framework that can easily handle things like collision, mouse clicks, animations and all other necessary game functions.

Thanks, DatCodingGuy

Phaser is pretty popular I think. I don’t have any experience with any of them, but the few Phaser games I’ve played seem pretty solid to me.

If you need something simple you can check out JSCF in github

Temmy Wars! Started development yesterday

Some time last year me and a friend came up with the game Temmy wars whilst at summer camp and I was a novice programmer then but I decided to make it now since 1. I have time and 2. I’m a decent programmer right now.

So far the sprites are trash and I’m using plain UT music but it will get better soon. There’s also a lot of bugs which are #1 priority to fix. There are also some very OP things at the moment but those will be fixed aswell. I’ll have a link below so you can play it on itch.io now. Due leave any feedback you may have as I really do need it. Thanks!

Not trying to put you down or anything, being 14 and programming is a great achievement, that’s when I started programming, but saying you’re restricted on your software based on your age isn’t technically correct. Engines like Unity and Unreal Engine are completely free (until you start making money off your game). Then you’ve got programs like Gimp for art, Blender for 3D models, Audacity, BFXR, Bosca Ceoil and more for audio that are all completely free.
27. Mar 2017 · 12:19 UTC
You are completely right I know those engines but I don’t wanna use Unity or unreal,

I mean ic ant get ink “Spine” or “new Adobe products” even if I would pay them cause you need to be 18 to make these contracts with Adobe CC I already have blender, gimp, audacity, lmms, and much more, but I know some programs I’d like to have, but I can’t get them either cause I can’t complete the payments or such.

I’m not complaining I just mean that I don’t have access to the tools some older people here have that’s why I wrote this! I mean you judge a professional different from an young learning dev

New guy here.

Hey people! Introduction, I’m a 13 year old game dev. I’ve been building games since I was 8 and I’m working on some projects with YouTubers like Rong.

Can anyone be kind enough to make me understand a little bit about how things work at Ludum Dare? Thanks in advance ^_^

I’m in

Or am I really? I think I am… but maybe I shouldn’t think so deeply about this.

2nd Ludum Dare and I’m stoked…

I will be using Unity and C# again.

I’m thinking 2d might be a little easier to come up with a game idea.

Other tools:

Paint, Gimp, AudioTool.com.

LD38 | First Ludum Dare

Alright, I’m in!

Okay so, I’m 19 years old and always wanted to be able to make games so I’m doing a Game Development course in September and thought participating in Ludum Dare would be fun, so here I am.

I’m not able to code is my problem, I’ve done some Unity and Game Maker tutorials in the past but always found myself just using Scratch because it’s fun and easy, so I’ll probably use that.

I’m crap at art so my game will probably look crappy (not to say it’s gonna work well either 😉 ) but hopefully it will be fun whatever it is lol, hopefully after this I’ll gain some confidence after completing a game and start learning more and maybe moving onto bigger game engines and stuff

Anyway, I cant wait and best of luck !

FlyCraft (the Oct Challenge hit) gets released on iOS and Android

revealing_herbie3

Hello guys,

after many-many years the game I created for the October Challenge 2012 finally gets released on iOS and Android. For those that don’t remember, the game was released only for BlackBerry devices back then:

[FlyCraft release post]

You might also want to look into the post-mortem of the game here in Ludum Dare.

[FlyCraft Success Story]

The game was a huge success on the BlackBerry platform, and it was always in my mind to someday bring the game to iOS and Android. Specially now that most BlackBerry users moved to iOS and Android, I was constantly being emailed about a potential release of the game on the new platforms.

So there you go you can now play on iPhones, iPads and Androids. Use this universal link: http://applk.co/flycraft

And let your friends know about it. It’s really appreciated!

Game on!

[Challenger entry]

I’m in!

I haven’t done Ludum Dare in over a year, but there’s no way I can miss the 15th anniversary. Here’s what I’ll be using:

Game Maker 2
Auxy/FL Studio for music
Bfxr for sound effects
GIMP for graphics

Good Luck!

Polishing up our LD35 Game

Hey all! We are taking our Ludum Dare 35 entry, “Shifty Shapes”, cleaning it up, and releasing it for free on itch.io. It will most likely go to other web platforms as well. Link to the original project: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-35/?action=preview&uid=92238

We are looking for testers for the new version. We’ve put Unity analytics hooks into the game, and we are mostly looking to leverage that data to tune the levels for release.

If interested, please comment on this thread, and I will inbox you a key

Thanks!

Preparing our Real World Gathering in Tours (France)

Paper, code, screen, the most basic tools.

Paper, code, screen, the most basic tools.

As some might have read there, we are preparing our second Real World Gathering in Tours. And to be honest, it is getting really exiting : so far our 20 seats for kids are booked. And graphic designers, musicians and developers have proposed to help them creating their own games!

It also seams that we will manage to group around 40 people covering a wide skills range, from graphic designers, to artists, developers, makers or board game designers. I can’t wait to discover what crazy projects will come out of this !

A showcase on Friday night, to start dreaming

As we might be quite a large number of participants who have never met each other, on Friday night (the 21st) we will organise a showcase to get to know eachother (and start dreaming) : everyone will be invited to show its previous productions : boardgames, odd electronic devices, drawings, and video games of course ! You can bet, that it will only be a beginning, as we will order tons of pizzas… But that’s another story 😉

Five workshops for beginners, and the others…

We also want to welcome beginners. So from the 10th to the 19th of April, we organise 5 workshops opened to everyone (whether they take part to the gathering or not) to learn and share about game creation :

  • Creating a platformer with Construct 2, for beginners. Tuesday the 10th – 7pm
  • Discovering the FunLab and its crazy machines. Wednesday the 11th – 7pm
  • Graphics in video games, a workshop to share our knowledge. Thursday the 12th – 7pm
  • Creating a point & click with Adventure Game Studio, for beginners. Tuesday the 18th – 7pm
  • Sounds and Musics in video games, a workshop to share our knowledge. Thursday the 12th – 7pm

Still some seats left…

There still are some seats left for the gathering and the workshops, so don’t forget to register if ever you wish to join !

And don’t forget to follow #ldtours37 for more news about our gathering !

٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶ I’m in!!!

Im in for LD38, probably for the jam (only for the extra time, I generally still follow compo rules). This will be my fourth time. I’ll be using:

  • Unity
  • MonoDevelop / C#
  • GarageBand / MilyTracker / BFXR
  • Sketchbook / Photoshop

Interested to see the themes! By the way, if you want to see my previous projects (including one I didn’t do for the Ludum Dare) you can check out my Itch.io page at dragonzbw.itch.io

Good luck to all!

Good luck :)

I made a simple character in blender, is it nice? – tips to improve

Give me some tips to improve my modelling, rigging, and animation time. It took me 3-4 hours to make this character and only with walk animation. The hardest part is the rigging and animation it took me about an hour or two. Would you give me tips or hints on how to make 3d models faster and better.

Also, in the future I would like to make 3d models like in Street fighter or tekken in which they have animations for grabbing or attacking the other 3d models. Any beginner or intermediate tutorials you can give me?

In my opinion (as a highschool Blender animation student) the model itself does not look bad at all – I can’t say for sure as I’ve never done that style of character, but the model looks well-built – it has the proper topology for animation. However, I would probably say that you put the leg bones in way too high, because the walk cycle looks really awkward – the character’s face is contorting as part of the walk, which doesn’t seem quite right.

Might be in, might not be. I really don’t know :D

I’ve been quite consistent at entering these things and I honestly can’t think of a more enjoyable way to make games. I’ve entered LD 32, 33, 34, 35, 36 and 37, however I’m not entirely sure if I’ll be able to enter LD #38, since I have exams to prepare for. I’ll try to make time, but can guarantee nothing. I might enter something small in the Jam :3

I’m in!

I’m in for LD38!

After mismanagement forced me into the Jam for LD 37, I will definitely try to go for the Compo again this time.

I might also try my hand at MiniLD73 as a warm-up. I always wanted to make a rhythm game and I always got frustrated when I had to throw together some lackluster music at the very end of LD when my brain had turned to mush. So, yeah, perfect opportunity to test different music making tools!
