LD 38 April 21–24, 2017

I’m doing it

It’s my 12th Ludum Dare!

I will be using C++ or Java, OpenGL possibly (but that didn’t go so well last time)

Good luck and have fun!

I’m in

yeh

I’m in!!

This will be my very first one! I’m super excited!

My fourth “i’m in post”

AND I AM HYPED!

Warmup Weekend?

I mean, I can warm up with or without it being official, but I was curious.

me.participation = undefined;

So, in the last week, I went through two computer changes.

My parents set-up their new computer, and the internet router.

I went to my laptop, which in three days somehow was crashing all too often, and with the dreaded BSOD…

I have fallen back to my old desktop as a desperate measure, and IDK if it can do a LD. I quit using it because it was over-heating often, and thus, shutting-down in the middle of me doing something…OFTEN…

My desktop doesn’t have my github stuff set-up, and due to many events, my game library isn’t making the progress I’d like it to. My friend is debating whether he’d participate or not, and this would impact me participating solely as an artist as I did last time.

I may participate for this round, or I may sit it out. If I participate, IDK if it’ll be as a lone wolf programmer/artist, an artist, or just a programmer. What technologies I’d use is also open to debate. I’ve become very disillusioned to HTML5 (actually, that’s a lie, I was never super in to it to begin with, and in truth, I wanted to be a flash developer). There’s a lot it CAN’T do. There’s tons it WON’T do. There’s BUTT-TONNES of stuff I have to write or download the implementation of. (at expense of performance and code maintainability) My library is an example of a lot of hard work for the purpose of not having to FIGHT the HTML5 APIs just to make even a simple game. I tried to make it lightweight, but there’s only so much I can do to make that a reality. There’s a certain feature set I want it to have, and each feature at the smallest is a new function, but most are entire classes or collections of them. I also want it to be easy to use, and it’s currently not delivering there. I feel like I am spending more time fighting HTML5 and JavaScript than I am developing programs with it. I do even question if this is all worth it, or if I should just quit, or drop web support/development and focus on Windows desktop exclusively. And even with the features of my library complete, I don’t want to be having to hand-code all the data and functions required to display graphics or re-play audio/video. That means I’d also need and IDE and a full-fledged engine, both of which require all the more effort.

*sigh* IDK what to do…  want to improve as a programmer, as an artist, an animator, but I feel like HTML5 is weighing me down. For every project I want to make with it, I spend more time just making an idea POSSIBLE than I do in imagining or realizing it. That’s also in turn less time, energy, and motivation to improve on any of those skills, excluding programming, which I actually can’t do non-stop… Even when I take the time to plan-out how to do something, I spend exponentially more in actually doing it. Of most of that, it’s in stuff not directly related to the implementation, but required for it to work. And then when my implementation is complete, I spend probably HOURS leveraging it, because the data/code format it uses should be written by a GUI-based and/or automated tool, not directly by a human. There’s a lot I’d rather do, and would be able to do, if I didn’t have to focus on “what 20 steps do I need to take to do this in JS, when flash would have taken 2?” so much.

Yet another “I’m in” post

Even my title isn’t original, sigh.

Either way I’m in, this will actually be two years since my first LD!

So, I want to recap my first LD game!

Bouncy ball kingdom!

Go ahead and play it, if it works for you (it doesn’t for me)

I was 13 when I made that game, I think that’s not that hard to see. I used Unity, even though I had never used it before (bad idea!). It had no sound, and I made the (rather bad) art on some obscure paint program.

I ended up #1047 overall.

Now, here’s my most recent game!

Antiroom!

I made that in gamemaker, something I was very familiar with! I actually used a consistent color scheme, and had some audio!

I am actually pretty proud of this one. It just felt good playing it, mostly because I focused on animations, particles and visual effects.

I ended up #105 overall, even getting top 100 in theme and inovation 😀

So, now to see what I’ll make for this jam. I think I’ll make my game on löve, or SDL or SFML or javascript, no idea. We’ll see.

See you on the jam!

I’m IN!

Really excited about this upcoming full game jam. It will be my first! Although I’ve participated in the last two mini jams, it feels special being involved in a full one.

In case anyone is bored and interested in work driven from these Ludum Dare jams, I do blog on IndieDB HERE. All of my growth since first working up the nerve to participate in a game jam can be found in those articles.

Poorly prepared, let LD #38 come

Am I poorly prepared or well prepared for LD #38? I’m not sure. At the one hand I now have – besides my usual graphics and coding tools – a great collection of sources for procedural generated sounds and music. Adding this to a game without properly adapting it will sound awful but this is way better than me trying to come up with some music while I actually should rather work on coding. When I decided to aim at LD, I was not yet sure if I would aim for the compo or the jam. Furthermore I had the plan to wait for the topic announcement and bail out in case I don’t have a good idea for the given theme.

With this attitude, I would have given up for sure.

Now I decided that I will go for the compo and I will take that theme, regardless of what it will be. I’m not sure if this is the first step to become an enlightened game developer or just a madman. Probably the latter. But I don’t care. I’m definitely in.

Unity C# Programmer Looking for team

hey everyone.

im a Unity3D C# Programmer with over a year and half experience, i did make a couple of games, and did enter 2 jams before this as solo.

however this time, im aiming to join with a team.

if any solo artists, or music composers are interested, or a team in with out a programmer, feel free to drop by.

here are some of my works.

Kinda-maybe-possibly-in

I’d like to participate in LD38, but it’s possible I won’t be doing so.  I would’ve been in #37, but between an incredibly severe lack of inspiration for the theme, and a lack of energy to code, I wound up abandoning the idea.  These same issues could knock me out of 38.  Let’s pick a fun theme for this one, like Unconventional Weapon (LD32) or the likes.

If I do participate, it’ll be with the same team (or, more specifically, lack there-of, most of my Ludum Dare friends have been busy lately) as LD35 and 36.  Similarly, I’ll also be using Unity for the engine, Blender for 3d work, GIMP for texturing, Audacity for normal audio work, and Caustic 3 comboed with Ableton Live for music.

Ludum Dare 38 im in!

Hey everybody WhiteHydra here!

Im gonna be competing in 38’th ludum dare, which is my first ludum dare ever.

Im gonna be working in pygame.

Looking forward to it!

clubsandwich, a BearLibTerminal framework for Python 3

(Cross-posted from Reddit)

In preparation for Ludum Dare 38, I spent this weekend writing a bunch of utilities for BearLibTerminal that will make your life MUCH easier! (If you’re a Python 3 developer, that is.) It’s a Cocos2D-iOS UIKit mashup, for ASCII.

Check it out here

API docs (in progress)

Features:

  • Event loop
  • Scene manager
  • Geometry data structures
  • Convenience functions
  • UIKit-like interface framework
  • Script runner to help you iterate quickly

I’m still working on nice documentation, but the Readme should give you a general idea and start a discussion. I love writing docs, so I can safely promise that there will be some good ones very soon.

Motivation

LD38 is next weekend, and I’m thinking about doing a roguelike. BearLibTerminal has gotten a lot better for OS X lately, so I started playing around and decided to stick with it.

The first thing I did was write an asynchronous event loop and scene manager, Cocos2D-style, to make it easy to transition between game screens. It was simple, and you could probably do it yourself in fifteen minutes, but at least I’ve saved you some typing.

CataclysmDDA has given me high standards for roguelike UIs. I knew I’d never be able to make both a nice game and a nice UI in 48 hours. But I’m a champ at iOS development, and decided to try implementing the important parts of UIKit from scratch, in Python, for ASCII. And it worked! It will take a while for me to explain the concepts, but I’m confident people will be able to wrap their heads around them.

While writing all this, I added some geometry data structures and utility functions for BearLibTerminal. Stuff like a transform stack for drawing, convenient state access for Python, and a little script to help you iterate quickly by continuously relaunching your program.

If you post a mockup UI, I will write a demo in clubsandwich! I tried to make the UI framework as general as possible, but really only played with a couple of layouts. If you want me to prove the utility a bit, you could help me out by posting an ASCII or MS Paint mockup of what you want your UI to look like, and I’ll see if I can build it quickly in clubsandwich.

I’m in for LD38 – Round Two

I’m planning to try again for LD 38, likely for the Jam instead of Compo.

My first Ludum Dare was LD 37, where I tried the jam by myself and music from my brother. However, things didn’t end quite so well, as I wasn’t able to get function version to distribute by the end of the 72 hours. After the event, I did at least resolve the major bugs into the version you can find here on my itch.io. There is not much substance to the game, but it’s something I made in four-days time so that’s one step at least.

Pre-Event Thoughts

One thing I learned from the last event was to improve my time management. I ran short on time to get a functional game. I spent too much time with small details that ended up not being used in my rush to finish the game in some form where people could at minimum click the button. Ludum Dare 37 was my second project using libGDX and my first project using Ashley for entities and Box2D for physics. I learned a lot, especially using some other open-source projects to get some general ideas and guidelines.

With LD 38 coming up, I’m hoping to get a more complete, more enjoyable game than my LD 37. I will have less time than before due to work, but I’ll still have a decent amount of time. I want to create something minimally substantial, preferably an idea that I would want to go back to later and continue.

Tools

I’ll use Java and the libGDX game framework.
I will probably use Ashley as an entity-component management system.
I will probably use Box2D for any physics/collisions.
For sounds, I’ll use sfxr/bfxr.
Music I will either create using musagi.
Art will be created using paint.net

I do believe i’m in!

This will be my first time participating in the jam. I have considered participating before but it was always before a test or I always had something else to do. Sooo now that i’m free i’m really excited to give this a try for the first time. I just hope I don’t get discouraged halfway through. But thats not like me. Normally once I start I cant stop! Though starting isn’t that easy for me. Well that’s what the theme is for right! Hyped! See you during the 12pm crunch time full of high efficiency instinctive coding full of bugs!

On the Ludum Dare

What really puts a downer on any ludum dare competition is when you cannot participate.  Not because you don’t want to, but you need to study for an exam or your job doesn’t count it as a holiday (unfair!).  It is on a weekend, but studying for the AP takes priority.

Besides that, good luck to all that are “in”.  I hope you come up with great ideas, and write indented code.

I’m in! and looking to make/join a team

I prefer using Unity C#, I was in Ludum dare a few times before:
http://ludumdare.com/compo/author/cyberstarlight/

It would be nice to find at least one artist and one composer, to round things up, but whoever joins is welcome, even more programmers ^^
Obviously Theme voting just started so I have no plans yet, we can come up with an idea together when time arrives!
We can do 3D or 2D, whatever you like, I don’t mind.

My main goal this LD is to work well with a team, so I’m not going to insist on the idea or style too much.

The only thing I really care about is:
That you have the weekend free, and be available the whole time.
That we pick an idea that is reasonable to finish.

If you want to join, leave a comment :)
(Or if you have a team that needs a programmer)
