LD33 August 21–24, 2015

LD33 I’m in!

The last 2 Ludum Dare’s I was in i didn’t fare well.  This time, I’m going in with a different tool set and hopefully I’ll be ready to make something within the available time.  My weapons of choice this time will be Twine and photoshop.  I will probably need to make use of the full 3 days but we shall see.

The One Man Team

Hey guys, it’s me again. Few days ago I told you that Life Sensation team were in… But recent problems in real life lead to the fact I’m now alone in the team this time as my coworker won’t be able to work with me this time! It will be a lot of fun I guess. Let’s make another game alone and hope it will be a good one :V

Ps. Sorry for (lot of) mistakes I wrote as I said last time I’m french and I don’t have a very good english level ^^”

I’m in for the LD33 (first-timer here)

Hey everyone! I’m an aspiring game designer from Russia, who is looking forward to gaining experience and having some fun this weekend at Ludum Dare 33! This is my first game jam, but I really like the whole theme thing and I think it would be very inspirational for me to work in such constraints. Also, I can’t wait to see what others are going to do with the theme! I expect the results to be so different, yet remarkably similar in some ways.

I’m going to participate in The Jam. Here are the tools I’m planning to use:

  • Engine: Game Maker Studio 1.4
  • Graphics: Paint.NET 4.0.6
  • Sound: Bfxr 1.4.1
  • Brain: my own (hopefully)

“Important” Questions

This is not really that related to the competition but mainly a question of style. What do people prefer?

  • Tab vs Spaces vs Hybrid (tabs for indentation and spaces of alignment)
  • Indentation Width (2, 3, 4, 6, 8)
  • snake_case, camelCase, lowercase, etc.
  • If applicable, brace position: K&R, Linux, Allman, etc.

My personal opinions:

  • Hybrid (best of both worlds)
  • 4 or 8 or 2 (depends on the language)
  • camelCase or snake_case (depends on the language)
  • Allman mainly but trialling out Linux

* Spaces. Tabs get distorted when switching editors and sharing files. 😛

* Width of 4.

* camelCase though some files are named LikeThis.

* And i’m not familiar with the brace names…. but after a quick search: K&R. Definitely K&R. 😛

Depends. In my IDE I just hit tab. I actually don’t know the indetation width of it. In Sublime Text, I hybrid with tab (indents 8) and space three times.

Regarding 1. and 2. : I’ll let my IDE worry about it.

I’m in! With a vengeance!

Last time around I failed and couldn’t come up with a good plan in time to execute it. Which was a shame because I felt like I was so prepared.

One thing I didn’t do was a good I’m in post, so that was definitely the cause 😉

Well, it was actually my lack of preparation with the tools I was using and I had ran into problems that I couldn’t solve in a weekend.. So like a good programmer I have learned from my mistakes and have taken on projects to keep myself familiar with my workflow. Here are some things I’ve done since the last Ludum Dare:

Procedural Dungeon Generation and platforming.

Auto Tiling and arbitrary Resource Management.

Anyways here we go!

I’m In!

I’m going to be using Unity 5, paired with Visual Studio.

I will also be using Blender and Photoshop to get those awesome (read: poorly made) graphics.

For the music side of things I will be using Audacity + LMMS + CGMusic or something like that.

This time around I have spent a lot of time learning my new tools available to me in Unity5. Well some of it at least. I will be taking advantage of the Event System, GUI and 2D stuff along with a few workarounds that I have learned to make things work right and fast. I also have gotten a sort of workflow down with doing rendered sprites from Blender.

This time around should be fun and will hopefully be less of a failure.

In

This time around I’ll be doing a Jam with friends. Got three of us programming, and another dude for art. Working in c++ using Angel2D. Fun times.

I’m in!

This will be my fourth or fifth Ludum Dare now (on and off unfortunately cause of school). Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things!

Tools:

LibGDX (Java and OpenGL)

Eclipse

Paint.NET

Bfxr

Polls

LD #33 is coming. This saturday (or friday if you live in the US) you will start coding your 48-hour game. Maybe you’re a pro, maybe you’re an amateur, or maybe you have absolutely no experience at game making. However, each and every compo competitor will have to code. That’s why I made two polls. Check them out and let us see how many use C++, C#, my personal favorite, Java and many others, as well as what engines we will be using.

Tip 1 – Stop drinking any caffeinated drinks ASAP! If you clean your body from caffeine now, you get serious boost later.

Keep it super simple. Hack in more features if you feel they contribute to the game somehow and you still have time left. But think well through the very core mechanics and concentrate on those first.

I’ve only done one Ludum Dare, but my tip would be to first choose what you’d like to learn or get better at. Maybe an art style? A new engine like Unity or Unreal? Some pathfinding or AI coding techniques? Or just time management to finish a project.

Good luck! You’ll either love it, or it may kill you. Most likely both.

Keep it simple, don’t go overboard on coffee, etc. Make sure you know your development tools well, get a decent nights sleep the night before and the first night, because you’ll need it for the second day.
