LD33 August 21–24, 2015

We are in!

This is our “We’re In” announcement.

Me and a couple of friends are going to participate in The Jam. This is our first Ludum Dare, so it’s going to be exciting to see how we’ll do!

We’ll be using Unity. Everything else is up in the air. 2D, 3D? Music? Sound effects? We’ll just make it up as we go along.

I think I’m In!

Giving the warmup weekend a shot, using a random theme from Slaughter.

I’ll be following my usual style of music first, game later, and I’ve thus produced a piece of music – You can find it on soundcloud here. By some bizarre miracle I managed to cut the track to loop pretty seamlessly.

I’m planning on using Game Maker Studio for the actual game bit, the music was recorded and arranged with Guitar Rig 5, FL Studio and Audacity.

Now I just need to make a game…

I’m in

This is my second ludum dare, but the first ludum dare I didn’t get to submit; I was too slow.  I am going to work on a domino game to get my skills up in the meanwhile.  Good Luck.

I’m in(I think)

So this is my second ludumdare, but I couldnt finish the first because I just wasnt good enough at programming.

I’ll be using libgdx and I hope to implement multiplayer!

for images I’ll be using photoshop, for sound I’ll be using bfxr.

[edit] I use Intellij IDEA 14

If you have problems finishing because of programming don’t try make multiplayer. I don’t think lots of people make multiplayer games anyway so not sure if that’s a good idea..

I’m in

Hi this is my first lundum dare and hopefully im gonna complete my secound game ever during this event.

Im probably gonna be using JavaScript or Java.

Good luck to everyone and have fun :)

1 year anniversary

This LD is the 1 year anniversary of the game I’m currently working on, Semispheres. Hoping the theme this time around is as good as a year ago. Good luck to you all!

Well, hello again!

So, hello again, dear developers!

And again, I’m going to participate in the LD, for the 4th time in the lifetime of this universe.

I’m a 16 year old hobby developer from Russia, with something like 2.5 years of C++ experience. (I start to forget when I started to do it. :D)

And I just want to say hello to those people who have enough skills and enough courage to partipate in the event this time.

As I said, it will be my fourth time. I’m really happy about it. I have no idea how I can make money with my skills at this point, so only thing that I can make with them is to partipate in various events and contests. (And sometimes I make small utility programs.) And Ludum Dare is the biggest of them. I thint that it’s one of the main reasons why I continue to develop my programming, drawing and music-making skills. Funny thing is: I didn’t learn anything super big for some time already, I just made games and used some new libraries. But my skills are still somehow improving! Just look at these results (which I’m very proud of):

nicestats

And I’m going to try again. I’m going to do something with this shameful ‘humor’ regression, but beating other results can be hard. Especially that cool ‘Overall: #42’. But I’m still going to try at best of my abilities and improve all or at least most of them!

And there is one more interesting thing: My life changed a lot since previous LD. I’m now in different city and some things have changed. I feel more happy about my life at this moment. And I’m very interested in looking at how these changes in my mind will change the way how I make games.

But there is one disadvantage in being in another city: I have not took my workstation with me! D: So now, while I writing this post now, I’m sitting in a small and not so clean room in front of slightly crappy laptop with tiny 1366×768 screen, using old vacuum cleaner as a chair. 😀

I left my physical tools behind, by my virtual tools are still with me:

toolchain

  • CodeBlocks – Just because it’s best free C++ IDE I know.
  • MinGW-w64 (GCC 5.1) – A C++ compiler. Because it’s best C++ compiler, in my opinion.
  • Winamp – Old, but still very good music player.
  • Paint.NET – Last version of it slightly suck, but it’s still my favourite graphics editor.
  • Fony – I don’t think I’m going to use it, but who knows. It’s a pixel font editor, and I have a lot of handmade fonts already. (BTW, I’m very happy about it: I make almost all fonts that I use for my games and even for code in my IDE by myself!)
  • Notepad++ – A very nice text editor, for those cases when IDE is too bulky.
  • Sfxr – Small but nice sound effects generator.
  • LabChirp – Also sound effects generator, but more complicated. You need to know how sound waves work to make something with it.
  • LMMS – Music editor. Too complicated for me at this moment, but maybe I will use it a little.
  • Audacity – Sound editor. It’s hard to make something new with it, but it’s very good for editing existing sounds.
  • Sunvox – Nice music editor! I bet you have not heard about it before, but it’s easy to use and have interesting effects. And it have one killer feature: Very good echo and reverb. And as you know, every junk sounds good if apply enough echo and reverb. 😀
  • ShaderSandbox – It’s not on the screenshot. Basically, it’s just an offline Shadetoy, which can save images generated with your GLSL sahders to files. I made it myself! You can read more about it here.

And I want to say a few words about my engine. I don’t use those frameworks, when you have everything done for you. I use my own handmade engine, ‘L8’, which I’m very proud of. (3300 lines of code.) It’s written on top of SDL, OpenGL (GLEW) and OpenAL. No other libraries. It have some support for both 2D and 3D graphics and 3D sound effects. And it even works on android! (But at this moment without sound.) See it here.

I’ve recently added support for old OpenGL 2, so you will no longer have any problems with old PCs! So, if some of you have tried to play some of my games and got an error message about too old OpenGL version, please write a comment about it and will port that game for the new engine version when I will have some time.

That’s all that I wanted to say.

I’m eagerly waiting for the event to start.

Good luck to every one of you who is brave enough to participate in this LD!

I’m In

Will be using Godot or SDL 2, not decided yet.

I’m in!

I’m probably going to use…

Inkscape | inkscape.org

Audacity | audacityteam.org

SFXR | drpetter.se/project_sfxr.html

GIMP | gimp.org

OBS | obsproject.com

I’ll update this list if I want to add/remove a tool, and will list my tools at the end of the Compo.

Is it worth it?

I’ve participated in (and successfully completed) 3 Ludum Dares so far, and I’d really like to join again next weekend. The problem is, this time of year is incredibly busy for me, and I have to be away for all of Saturday. Do you think it’s worth trying to throw together a quick game on Sunday, or will whatever I make be so sloppy and unimpressive that it would be better to just skip this one?

Do the jam in two days. That should work.

My most successful LD entry was made in one day, after I abandoned my initial idea. So you can certainly compo in one day! :)

I’ve done it before, made the came in only 8 hours… really didn’t go well; if you’re curious check out my LD30 entry which is the one I’m on about. I had only been coding for about 10 months at that poin, but my God was it awful.

Let’s do this!

Warmup Stream Extravaganza!

Hey all! I’m streaming Warmup Weekend, and am going to try and hit a bunch of different engines (Unity, Construct 2, Unreal, Twine, Puzzlescript…).

My goal is to go through the process with engines that I’m both familiar with and completely new to, so it should be…interesting.

Feel free to stop by!

i am in

i will be using:

  • a mac mini
  • a portable usb monitor – fits inside a backpack
  • wireless keyboard and mouse. actually fuck that mouse. i’ll use a wired laser mouse.
  • power cord, surge protector. not anticipating any major thunderstorms, so a basic power strip should work.
  • software installed: the usual suspects – unity3d, blender, gimp, audacity
  • also mac os x – unix, baby!

i’ll find a coffee shop somewhere and hang out for a while and maek gam. if any seattle folks want to hang out and hold down and area of a coffee shop during one or both of saturday and sunday, i think that’d be a nice quasi-event, in lieu of atomjack (who hosted the seattle LD event in april) closing [:(]; i know there are quite a few LDers out there, so feel free to PM me or post on seattle indies (also here) if you find a good spot for a bunch of us to sit down and jam.. :)

i may also go back and do some audio work on my main workstation, running windows 8.1, all the software that’s on the mac mini (except os x)(the windows versions, obviously), plus :

  • cantibile solo, with VSTs for emulating some old school synths – SH-101, MS-20, Bit-1, some others
  • a MS-20i midi controller for the MS-20 VST, also the keyboard works as a keyboard
  • two 24″ dell monitors, one in portrait, one in landscape
  • one squarish 19″ samsung monitor from like 2005 i think, because more monitors
  • a clippy desk fan, because it might get hot
  • lots of tea
  • also an oculus rift dk2. it doesn’t really work on the mac mini, so if i use it, it would be on a second attempt type game if my first game done on the mac fails for whatever reason halfway through.

i look forward to making a game along with everyone else, and to seeing what everyone comes up with.

until then, o/

In Again!

I’m in another time, the fourth one actually. Took part in #29, #30 and #31 – had to skip #32 unfortunately. But no big deal, there are countless more I’m going to be part of, like this time!

It kind of became a ritual to use the same tools every time, learning from mistakes, making them better. That would mean:

  • Language: Java with Eclipse
  • Engine: JangoDare
  • Graphics: GIMP,
  • Sound: BFXR, Audacity
  • Music: FL Studio?

Although I am theoretically open for experimenting with new stuff, specifically something web-based. So if the theme choice goes very well for me, I might throw my complete setup over and do something totally different… We’ll see! It’s gonna be great!

Maybe in

I think this is the first LD that won’t fall on either school starting or finals week for me. Nice!

We are in!

We are an artist and programmer duo. As this is our first participation in a Ludum Dare Jam we are excited to see how it goes!

We will use a custom 2D-engine written in C#.

cheers, M&N

Twin Citians and Ludum Dare

Is there anyone in the Twin Cities areas doing Ludum Dare? I didn’t make it to the Ubuntu meeting as I was way too tired, so I couldn’t ask anyone there. Just curious.  What game engine are you using? Thanks!

I will be using VX Ace game maker and attempting to make a simple word game for word geeks. Theme? If the theme does not work with word game puzzles, I will make the puzzle anyways and just chuck the theme. lol No, seriously, I will have to get really creative in getting that theme in there.

Looking at my Previous Entries

Just to start with, ‘I’m im’ for this Ludum Dare and will be using:

  • Unity 3D 5
  • Visual Studio
  • Photoshop
  • Blender
  • Audacity
  • Maybe BFXR
  • Audiotool

So with that sorted, I would like to say that I know my entries to other Ludum Dares aren’t very good but I have learned from them.

2

My first entry was for Ludum Dare 30 and I made a basic first person jumping game which turned out to be difficult to control and had horrible music (because of which I have changed how I make music for my games). I also discovered that making levels by hand is difficult, especially when your trying to code game mechanics at the same time. The last thing I’ve found (but not learned) is that I need to give more instructions on how to play the game and what is happening with the UI.

4

My next game was for Ludum Dare 31 and actually had a bit of slightly useful UI in it (the Unity default UI that is) but was still difficult to know what was going on and was extremely buggy. There where also mechanics in it which where not needed, like path finding  and probably lots more. This was the only game where I did a bit more to it after Ludum Dare and managed to use fewer lines of code and added some mechanics I hadn’t managed to do during Ludum Dare, this version was then put up for sale with me being very hopeful that I could start my career in game development … and got no sales, which looking back on it should have been expected. This game also had some music(sounds) but this still wasn’t very good.

Picture7

My latest game was (as expected) for Ludum Dare 32 this was definitely my best game so far and used Unity 3D, 2D physics and the new UI system meaning that the UI was cleaner and meaning that there wasn’t enough of it and so lots of people struggled to work out what was happening (I said I hadn’t learned from my first game). This game had some mechanics I was really happy with, except for the upgrade system which didn’t end up the way I wanted it to be, however there was no aim to the game, well there was but the goal was added in the last 2 hours of Ludum Dare and I’m still not happy with it, nor did the game link with the theme very well. This game had no music and basically no sounds at all as I ran out of time. But I do like the vaguely correct physics and the look of them game (ignoring most of the temporary graphics).

So how does this link with this Ludum Dare, well I’m hoping that I can learn from my mistakes so here is a list of things I need to do better:

  • UI – I see myself as a programmer so this normally ends up getting ignored
  • Music – Again this gets done last and so isn’t done properly, I’ve also found Audiotool (link at the top) which means that I might make some actual music for this game.
  • Tutorial – Often I run out of time and rush the last things, like telling people how to play my game (which apparently is important)
  • Complicated Features – I always make too many things which are too complicated and so don’t add them properly or at all
  • AI – This is a bit of a challenge for me, I haven’t managed to get any AI in my games so I want to try to do this

So that was a bit of a ramble but good luck to everyone who enters and people who are unsure about doing it, you should give it a go.

Have fun and I look forward to playing your games.

More from me on my Twitter

I’m in!

I’m in, finally, for the first time.

I’ll be using:

  • Little Wagtail – an absolutely terrible 2D engine made for LD by me, based on SFML
  • qtcreator – for development

See you folks on #ludumdare then! o/

I’m in… I think

This will be my second attempt at Ludum Dare. LD32 was a complete failure where I had severe creativity issues and after 18 hours declared myself out. Hopefully this time round will be different.

As yet I have not decided if I will be using GameMaker: Studio or my own engine – ZEGL

I wish everyone the best of luck and as always enjoy the event.
