No idea for gameplay! :c

So this what I have so far:
ss (2013-12-14 at 01.54.47)

I’ve made it in like 6 hours, durning that I was thinking about “One life” thing. But I think it isn’t original so I am thinking about something better.

I’ve added Hide feature too, that can make player invisible for a short time. When hidding you can see slightly better in darkness. What do you guys think about making only one bar of power to hide?

Write your ideas and feedback in comments, I appreciate it alot.

Update #1

Gameplay_WIP

Some wip mechanics of our game. The game is coming out pretty well. But now is time to rest, later on we will post more about the genre and art! Maybe some music!

“You know that this is your only chance of escape”

Text boxes! (6h in)

They’re even a self-contained “class”. And they’re rounded, too!

Certainly not!

I think I’ll take a break from this now.

Starting

So I woke up at night, looking at the theme and realised that this is another rule instead of a theme … what’s wrong with you?

Anyway, I went back to sleep and one idea stuck in my head. It’s hard to do this in only 48h, but it’s worth a try.
Hint: You have only one arrow.

Working Title – 6 Hours In – Idioscopic Creations

We’ve been having a blast this Ludum Jam! Our ‘You Get Only One’ mechanic, that we decided on, is to have only one life, and when you die, the game shuts itself, and won’t run again (unless of course you reinstall).

Our idea is to have the player rise up against a tyrannical communist government. They have to cycle between jobs every 10 days, and raise up support for their cause. (RIP Nelson Mandela). Our team is working in LÖVE, Paint.net, and are collaborating via collabedit, skype and google docs. Here are some screenshots, of things we have done so far!

We plan to give more updates soon.

Feeling really meh

Haven’t actually spent any serious time thinking about the theme or anything because, as always, I had plans on Friday Night, so I’ve been occupied.  It’s past midnight here now, so as always, we’re gonna call it a night and just sort of mull the theme over in our heads.  We’ll try and think of something tomorrow.  I think our goal is to be a lot less ambitious than last time…not because what we did last time didn’t work, but just because we don’t feel like making this one stressful and tiring.

However, I’m somehow just not feeling in the right mood at all for this.  I think it’s related to some personal issues too.  I’m beginning to feel really discouraged.  We’ll see what happens, I guess.  For now I’ll just give it a good night’s rest and see what my mind is feeling like tomorrow.

The Magic Number was ONE, right?

Hello, I’m Jonathon Bont (developer of Trashmania: Remix, Aqua Rhapsody, and Main Developer of Wrecking Balls Arena), and this is actually my very first Game Jam! Current name of this project is “Neon Knee-Highs”, and I might not be able to finish it in time due to schoolwork, but let’s see if I can skirt away with releasing something half-decent. 😉

So, become one with me… mwahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

The Magic Number is "One".

The Magic Number is “One”.

Cramming for the Jam

Update!

We had a game idea session in a local café and have an idea to play with.

2 player split screen endless faller. Player 1 is a space module falling through a cave being dug by player 2

Land in water to cushion the fall and save the space module or keep going to get a higher score.

Now we are 5 people in my tiny student room, crammed and jamming.

Wake up, Sit Down, Hi!

So, Ludum Dare 28… This is not my first time, but this will be my… something. Anyways, I just woke up and I maybe 15 minutes later saw the theme and I already have a swell idea (swell? what is this the 50s?).

I am not going to say what it will be, but I’ll post some screenshot of the progress, hence I really don’t want to stream on twitch because that didn’t really work so well last time.

Anyways, I am done for now, updating later on the game.

Walk cycle done, break time!

Got the walk cycle done for the “plain” character template!

Walk cycle!

Time to take a small break, grab some coffee (downed three cups already!) and whatnot. Feel free to tune in to my stream at http://www.twitch.tv/manabreak_ld , I’ll be continuing with graphics for a while, drawing the actual characters. After that (probably in like two-three hours?) I’ll be doing more coding, and in the evening, it’s music time! :)

I’m in

But hey, the theme.

Yesterday I got an idea, but it doesn’t fit with the theme that easy.
Just starting to build something now.

Good luck everyone.

Update 1

Finished the destruction system!..

UntitledLooks like the prison walls wont hold to C4!

6 Hours in

Of the 6 first hours, I have spent 4 hours on the challenge and 2 hours on driving lessons and breakfast. I’ll share what I have accomplished so far.

Screenshot from 2013-12-14 09:17:16

As you can see, it is a space invaders type of game. So far I’ve implemented controls, firing, collision between enemies and bullets. And awesome enemy sprites! As for the next steps, I’ll first implement the other collisions and then I’ll write better AI. The ‘only one’ theme is also already implemented, but I’m not telling in what way yet. I’ll keep it as a surprise :)

Good luck everyone, I expect alot of awesome games by the end of the challenge, don’t let me down! 😀

Update 2

Timer and money counter in place. the guy responds to my clicks. woooooo

Let’s do this

I woke up pretty late, and the bad news is that I won’t be able to code the whole day. On the other hand, I’ve got an idea ready. Well, let’s get to work and see how it turns out.

Planning beforehand

So, I have planned the game. Not like “the game will be like that”, but fully. You can read my previous post to see what’s going on.

There are several important people you can speak with. I planned every dialogue, but I won’t tell it.

For each person you have two or three options: ask, persuade, and give information. The last one is not guaranteed. The first two options start a mini-game. I made a scheme that explains them.

Scheme smaller

So, discovering only makes persuading simpler. But persuading is more important, it changes your relationships or gives you information (which you can tell with the third option).

The game has two endings.

Okay, enough planning for now, let’s code!

One hour in!

And there’s already some good progress!

Progress!

Good morning everyone!

Hello there!

Wow, that’s totally the theme we expected when we saw the final round voting. 😉
All right then, time for a nice breakfast and then some brainstorming on our game. Hope to post a first screenshot in a couple of hours. Good luck everyone!

Cheers, Marcus

That’s what I’m making, and you’re not getting a screenshot yet because I need to add the gore and splatter and bloodlust and tea.

Things I’ve learned about Unity:

  1. Animations using component properties is kinda neat but a little hard to do make any actual use of…
  2. Raycasting has a little bit of state representing how it feels when you call the function.* The result is a whole lot of confusion.
  3. How do I art

* Game Objects are ephemeral, multi-planar beings that can only be described as “ghostly” in the raycasting process

QUICKLY YOU HAVE ONE MINUTE TO KILL AS MANY WOODLAND CREATURES AS YOU CAN

Posted my first real progress update…

So my game is not quite as original as I had hoped it would be, but when you’re multiple hours in without any ideas you feel you can accomplish you take what you can get right?

Anyway, the game is coming along nicely, and you can check out my progress update here: http://davesilvermanart.com/blog/2013/12/14/ludum-dare-progress-post-1/

End Of Morning One, and a late “Im In!”

So I never posted an “I’m in” post, mostly because I didn’t want to be just another person with an I’m in post, so I’m wrapping my “I’m in” post with an evaluation of morning one as I take a breakfast break.

Incase you wanted to know, I am a Unity user, with Modo for 3D and Gimp for 2D, and Sublime Text for code because MonoDevelop won’t open.

I initially saw the theme and thought “okay that’s cool I can work with that”. I did not have confidence in my first idea so I ditched it and started another idea involving a bicycle race in which your front wheel has been stolen and you have to win the race balancing on only one wheel, complete with super hard QWOP-like controls. This turned out to be rather difficult to do in practice so I ditched it after 2 hours of work and went back to my original idea.

The problem was the original idea seemed to unexciting. I wanted to wrap it in context that was amusing and light hearted. And then I had it! A game were you have to destroy all games consoles because PC Master Race! Before console gamers eat me, I’d like to point out my epic new PS4 I am spending my time with. It is however an amusing satirical context to set the game in.

So far some basic framework has been set up and I made fire, because what else to spend an hour working on when you’re using Unity?

1

Just to clarify the theme fits in because your weapon has only one round, yes, you must destroy all consoles with only one round. Anyway if this post doesn’t get lost in all the rest give me a heart so I know someone read it!

Now food!

Ah, the wonders of sleeping in, and waking up to everyone working on their games left and right and the theme turning out to be the most mind-melting of the final 20 (as per usual)… I need sugar and caffeine.

You Only Get One CHANCE TO BREAK OUT OF PRISON!

So we are six hours into this thing

We planned for a while to do a game about corruption because we’d assume that theme would win. Turns out the theme was going to be You Only Get One.

A curious room configuration

This was a tough theme, we poked and prodded the idea and thought of what things you normally get one of. Virginity came up. The thought of having “one shot” at something is also interesting, like games that normally have more than one moves, but reduced to single moves, for example a sword fight in which you can only perform one attack.

We arrived at a “one chance / one shot” premise of a prison break. You spend 90% of the game gathering intelligence and choosing what item you want to take with you (you only get one item!) and the day before your execution, you must break out of prison by bribing guards, causing distraction, picking locks, and so on. Lots of inspiration to draw from, like Shawshank Redemption, Prison Break, Escape Plan, etc.

This.. this is not any better!

My partner @Twincannon was busy making tilesets and icon graphics. Termi cooked up the prisoner sprite. I’ve been busy writing the collision detection code and just hooked up some better looking room and hallways generation.

Tomorrow,  I have to write out the day-to-day prisoner activities, as well as some npc walking routines, and hopefully end the day with items.

Follow our progress @mflux @twincannon on twitter and we live stream this the whole time http://twitch.tv/punyhumangames

Decided not to stick to theme

After many hours of pondering on what to do for this theme, I really have no idea what to do. I decided that I will not to stick with the theme and do a idea I have for months but didn’t want to prototype it. Since the idea of Ludum Dare is to make game, I hope this is acceptable :P.

Now the little guy moves and throws trees around

Thank you Unity! that was a piece of cake.
You can move around and throw trees, but at least it’s something. The camera follows the guy around but doesn’t change angle, so it looks like a remote controlled robot.
I plan on making this little guy more dynamic, and giving him tools to grab the trees and take them back to the “storage cube”
I’m also back to orthographic view. I’m still not sure of which one will be nicer in the end though

Now with tree demolishing!

Now with tree demolishing!

And now I’m going to take a rest.

In and Going Good

Im going great on Ludum Dare 28. I’ve decided to keep it simple because this is my first Ludum Dare. If I haven’t said this before I’m using: Eclipse for Java, Paint.NET, sfxr and bfxr. Here’s a snapshot of my game:

Indegame's game (BETA)

My game in beta stages

I’m in

For the first time i won’t say that the theme is sucky. Not cause it’s not, but cause i don’t understand what that means. My english is not perfect, obviously but i’m sure about one thing :

Somewhere in Serbia, there a guy, loling hard at us : “Those LD dorks have been trolled, they took my theme and i don’t care about videogames at all, let’s play leagues of legend in cybercafe”.

Disclaimer : i’m not racist i’m just french and i’m in.

Second Ludum. Better than burgers this time.

Well, here’s my second attempt at something like this. Hopefully I can get a fuller game this time around.

I was busy all day so I only had a few hours to mull around the idea, but luckily a previous idea I had sketched out a year back is being resurrected into the frame of this theme. Maybe it’ll work out, maybe it won’t, but I’ll sure as hell have a great time doing it.

I can’t wait to see what everyone has in store for this LD.

Also I’ll just be using Unity, perhaps Blender, and Paint.NET.

Good morning, fresh start

Hi there! This time I changed my routine a bit in hope it will help me stay in focus longer. Although 6 hours late I’m ready to kick it off.

I won’t be using my standard machinery. Old XNA isn’t event supported anymore and MonoGame requires you to build assets in XNA anyway so I need to change a bit.

I’ll use these sophisticated tools from now on:

As of add-ons I’ll be using:

  • ReSharper (for Visual Studio)
  • UnityVS (for Visual Studio and Unity 3D)
  • DebugX (Unity 3D)
  • … will add more as I use them

Just have fun and create some enjoyable games!

That sounds really fun! Hope it turns out well!

It’s only 1 am. Keep jamming.

So I wasn’t planning on doing Ludum Dare this weekend but changed my mind last minute. Trying to do something out of the norm with this game, not quite sure how it will turn out yet but it’s been coming together pretty well so far. Title is placeholder for now.

Day 1: Progress

Welp, I made a thing. (Thank goodness!)

Screen Shot 2013-12-13 at 9.41.34 PM

This is what I had after the initial 4 hours. A functional platformer, lacking any sort of level content or “things to do”.

Then I decided to start juicing it early. Here is the result as of now, 6 hours into my first LD48:

Screen Shot 2013-12-14 at 12.17.32 AM

Desaturation, noise filter, fake bloom, and speed shadows. (Love me some speed shadows!)

It looks pretty good in motion, too. And when Tweening the noise filter into full effect, it gives a nice static/analogue video look.

A good first day. I’m looking forward to starting early tomorrow! And see what else comes about with this little project. :)

Don’t forget to check out my live stream: http://www.twitch.tv/kodewerx It will be going all weekend.

Pretty!

You got only one… Enemy at once!

My brain started to work in 1 hour after waking up! I have decided to make game about duels in block or square world. I can do only pixel art, so whole game will looks like this swords:

Swords

Swords – training, short, long, gold, emerald, ruby, diamond and shadow

It won’t be anything super, hyper, mega, ultra, but I will focus more on gameplay.

Anyway, this is my first time in Ludum Dare!

Beginning and Gameplay

When I have seen the theme (You only get one), I was confused. But now I have a theme : You only get one ammo. You’re a hunter. To kill animals, ou can use your gun or your knife.

So you actually get two?

I agree, hunter has gun (single use) and knife (infinite use), so players could forget “you only get one”…

Maybe there is more fun to play a leopard and kill every hunters (who’s got only one ammo to shoot)

Time for sleep. I’ll be back tomorrow with a full energy bar :)

I’m in… six hours late…again :D

Hello all!

It is I, from the last LD being my first, none of you probably remember me, but no matter, for I remember me (usually), and that’s all that matters.

Good old Britain means I’m in six hours late again, and I have to leave in a few hours time, so my 15 year old self and I are going to enter the Jam. The theme is… not the greatest, but definitely open to some interpretation and unique ideas – I’m excited to see what other people and I come up with!

Many thanks, and good luck,

Taha

I’m in

Hello everyone, despite the fact that this theme sucks really really hard, I’m about to start my second Ludum.

I’ll do my best for my second videogame ever, and see you in 44 hours.

It doesn’t look like much, but thanks to the last few hours of hacky coding, those circles DO go around those tracks, and they DO transfer onto the linear track at the appropriate time, at the appropriate speed, just as one would expect!

And just like last LD I’m starting to have color anxiety. Well, at least it’s not turning out to have barf-themed colors. Dunno what was going through my mind last time.

Update GIF

Dialogue system in place, sort of rough idea of how you’ll click to interact also sort of working. Now for sleep. Ahh.

You Only Get One Unit

So, this will be my first Ludum Dare, though I’ve wanted to participate in the past I haven’t had the luxury. So far I have my sprite sheet ready to go and now get to start cranking away at the code. My game is inspired by playing RTS games as a kid, and envisioning the scenario where you have one last unit left, and if you were good enough you could just maybe still win the game.

tiles

Working with Haxe / OpenFL for this, hoping to just do a web version.

Arggg

So not a big fan of this theme, it’s pretty open ended, and I much prefer to do Game Jams for the structure that comes out of a theme, boo!

No real ideas yet, had to have a lie in from my work Xmas party last night and the combined 128 hour fortnight I’ve had working, refreshed and sort of awake I hope to get an idea in soon, most of them have been pretty lame so far, perhaps I will get some inspiration after cleaning the house and doing some food shopping, looking very grim for once :(

Some great looking ideas from others though 😀

SOLDIERS !

And as always, let me know what you think so far.

WIP Update 1

After about 7 hours I have quite a bit of the engine done, include most of the player actions, a HUD, level collision detection, and player/object and object/object collision response.  The graphics for the game right now are pretty terrible placeholders, so tomorrow morning I hope to get some good graphics drawn.

WIP1

On my to do list I have one more equipable item to implement and about thirty interactive objects (items, enemies, etc) to implement.  My hope is to get every one implemented and drawn tomorrow so that Sunday is strictly level design and clean up.

Also I mocked up the hero of the game, get should look something like this:

Hero

I’ve got lots to animate.  But for now, I need to sleep.

Progress after x hours post

So first LD28 update post, woo~ So I got to work only after an hour of trying to figure out the theme. However, I got lots of work done since then.

screenshot103

So, as you can see, it’s a topdown kinda game. The basic idea is that you fight bad guys with your small-but-growing army.

screenshot104

Now that may look slightly 3d, but it isn’t, I randomly had an idea for how to make topdown look 3D and it worked! so happy ^^

screenshot105

Here is a picture of me and my AI buddy fighting badies \o/

screenshot106

Here is a special ability my char used. You can use a special ability whenever the blue bar is full. This one shown, resuscitates beaten enemies and turns them to your side, seeing as you so kindly save them.

screenshot107

Woo, night time and daytime!

As you see in every picture, you can be a different class each time you play. Each has their own normal attack, special ability and stats (well, only defense really, hp is always 10). They also start with a different guard each. Currently there are 5 characters. The knight: A standard melee guy, The WiseMan: I haven’t decided what he does yet, The Translator: Throws spears and shoots crazy darts, what’s not to love?  The Plague Doctor: Heals and resuscitates. Finally The Archer: Good old range.

This is based around medevil time in case someone is wondering.

Also: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/89270405/LD28.exe , Download~ for Mstrp2ez and anyone who wants to try.

See ya in another couple of hours, may you get plenty of work done!

Oh, so THAT’S why you’re calling the game “Neon Knee-Highs”!

She turned out better than I expected, although still rough around the edges. Hey, I just drew her with real Crayola markers, ok! 😛

This dimension is called “… One With The Magic Number”. What secrets lie inside it’s strange, surreal interior? And why are all it’s residents so obsessed with that philosophical (psychological, even?) phrase… “You Only Get One!”

Hey, those ARE neon knee-highs... or are they legwarmers?

Hey, those ARE neon knee-highs… or are they legwarmers?

Gonna give it a crack ladies and gentlemen, Best of luck and good shout outs to all.

A vision has formed and I am ok with it, little dark but humorous none the less.

Using my previous entries code semi butchered to the new Dev layout.

Whiteboard and Thoughts

Still lacking an idea? Maybe my hard-to-read whiteboard can give you a nudge in the right direction.

I really like the idea of taking a genre and putting a twist on it with the theme. Maybe you can think of some more things than the ones I wrote down.

IMG_20131214_095903

Player model

This took me nearly 90 minutes, so I plan to use another 90 minutes for animation, then switch to logic and AI.

I decided to make the game 1st person, so you wont see more than that (already has far to many tris, so I will try to use fewer for the landscape)

Arms!

Let’s start fresh!

This theme is driving me nuts, I started out like I always do, mindlessly coding, hoping to come up with an idea as I go. That usually works. I now have a base for a dungeon crawler with random levels and a pretty cool light effect. I now realize I can’t come up with anything for the theme in this genre, so I’m restarting from scratch basically, I have an idea for a platformer that I will do instead. lol. poop happens!

lo-fi screenie of the current “progress”(that will be scrapped!)

SCREENIE

Seven hours in…

Taking a little food break before going back to marathoning this as long as I can.

Things are going alright in terms of coding and all that. Much of my art is still placeholder (I knew art was going to be a problem), but my biggest challenge so far is keeping the theme going. You probably can’t tell it’s even in there from the look of this development shot, but my interpretation of the theme is ultimately supposed to be that the player is saying “You only get one!” to a horde of hungry monsters (of as-yet unknown theme!). The idea is that, in a speed-arcade matching game a la Tetris mixed with Space Invaders, the enemies are content if they’re fed once with the correct thing. But fed twice and… well… baaaaad things… I’m hoping to design it in a modular fashion so that I can use any extra time to add in extra levels and powerups and whatnot.

This is my first go at, so I wouldn’t mind having someone’s two cents. Is my use of the theme too much of a stretch?

The most recent version is here:

To do:  Make a main character 3d model, animate models, sync movement and play to animation.

Tomorrow will be art day.

A minor update

If you’re wondering what I’ve been doing the last hours, I’ve been working on a concept for the game. I just realised I didn’t like that concept so I have to redo it all! Yay.

Level editor done!

We made a 2D/3D level editor to unity

now we can “paint” the boxes that compose the level in 3D and changing the depth

Someone has a spring in their step…

Good morning

Wow, the first hours of my first LD where tough. Because of the time difference the start time was 3am for me. I decided to get some basic things down before taking a nap. I ended up working till around 530am and sleep for 5 hours after that.

I must say that I’m really struggling with the theme here. I had something in mind and started that yesterday, but it was way too ambitious. Back to the drawing board for me this morning!

Still brainstorming – update 1

I had to sleep to recover from a tough week at my day job and waking up on the theme “You Only Get One” is not firing up a lot of ideas.

So far I have 2 ideas that I don’t really like but I think I will change strategy and jam randomly in Game Maker to see what comes up.

First idea: You’re alone on a desert planet, you need to escape but You Only Get One bottle of oxygen.

OneOxygen

Second idea (I noticed someone already got it so I guess I’ll leave it):

Cheers!

Shut it you slaaaaag!

Starting a bit late on this one (woke up, checked topic, went back to bed for 6 hours) but I’m already thinking I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.

As I dozed off I had the idea of mixing 2 old Atari ST games, the interrogation from The Killing Cloud, and the communication interface from Captain Blood.

You only get one interview with each suspect and need to find out WHO ATE ALL THE PIES! D:

Graphically I’d like to get something similar to Pigeon Street meets Monty Python.

PS – Cultural Reference – “Shut it you slag” – phrase from a seminal 70s BBC crime series “The Sweeney”.

“Our Last Hat” update

Well, I spent a couple hours getting basic collision and keyboard input up and running. You can run a hatless wizard around the screen and make him climb ladders! (Controls are just WASD for now, but if I have time they’ll be rebindable). The graphics are just the first thing I scrawled down; trying not to fall into the trap of spending half the compo drawing a walk cycle. =P

I think I’ll sleep a while now, and then start work on adding the rest of the wizard team, add hat-passing, a level exit, enemies, spells, and obstacles. (Probably in roughly that order). The hours, they slip away!

OH BOY TIME TO MAKE VIDYA

never made a game before

bringing in Stencyl, Paint.NET and FamiTracker as my tools

Stupid silly Pong clone GO

Status Update…

After a few hours of brainstorming, and a fair few doing not much, we have something little to show…

My other teammates gone to a party tonight so its just me deving… Should be fun!

Heres what we have so far (it has collision detection and moving around :P)

Capture

Anyway. Have fun everyone!

Progress Report numero dos

Welp, because the code was going so well I decided to work on some art, seeing as I usually leave it to the last minute and it usually looks terrible.

Aaaaaaaaaand it still looks terrible. If only my team’s artists could help me….

I decided originally to use individual images and animate them in unity, because sprite sheets are hard. Unfortunately that was taking too look and I had to abandon it for sprite sheet animation…

walk cycle

^The aliens walk cycle. sprite still needs shading and…colours…

Anyone got any ideas for names for the little guy?

Progress

I’ve made some good progress over the last hours. Please pardon my virtually non-existent art skills.Landscape is destructible, fuel tanks spawn debries which itself causes more explosions. Target: Kill the President of this mostly harmless planet with only one Bomb. Dunno if this will ever evolve into something fun. But it’s definitely playable ;-)

Ahh yes, Unpredicted Errors

So I was working on the line of sight system, when this happened

I don’t even know

From what i can tell they’ve turned into one of the tiles from the tileset…

I’m not sure how that even happened, but now i’ve gotta fix it =P

Until next time!

EDIT: Somehow it was caused by accidentally putting a ‘;’ instead of ‘&&’

Retiring for the night

We decided to retire. We made some progress and feel we can do a much better job well rested and have the whole day to complete the initial game. Good Night!

Time for responsibilities dammit.

Been up since 4am. Terribly hungover. Now I have to stop and leave the house.

But I have so much to do!

Ah well.

Also, my idea involves coercing everyone to give money to charity in exchange for me doing something I don’t want to do.

Stupid hangover brain.

Well, you only get one. So have a good one!

Basis 3D Engine done!

Finally! I’ve finished the 3D Engine now only left is to get some inspiration on what im going to make……. Here is a screenshot!

You only get oncejavaw 2013-12-14 10-50-54-88You only get once

Thats it for this update!

Ill see you guys in the next update!

Update 2.

Second post today :) so as you can see i have a game idea but i still have no name for it though.

Skärmklipp

Morning!!

Theme was announced 2am here, so I set some stuff up and went to bed. It’s now nearly 10am and… I’m still not sure what the game will be!!

I think it might involve… planes! Or it might not…

Oh well… I can always set up the UI… I’ll probably need a score or something..!  😀

Time to eat!

Eatt

Hope to get more idea doing that.

Getting tired update…

8 am here. It’s almost time for bed. Here’s a small mock up. Needs a lot of work =/. Tonight was just random graphics to get us started. Tomorrow I’ll refine what works and throw out the rest. I’m going have to get rid of the back stroke around the objects and the adjust the colors on everything to fit the character better. Goodnight ludum  and good luck.

I’m in for Ludum Dare 28

Because I have not had to much time last week this post needs to be written now. This is my third Ludum Dare.

I am using:

  • Java with Slick2D
  • Eclipse
  • BFXR or SFXR
  • Paint.NET
  • Gimp (if needed)
  • Tiled (if needed)
  • and some kind of music generator, eg. cgMusic

I wish you all a successfull weekend!

One Try (working title) – Prototype

For my second LD, I decided to go for a shoot’em up.  The theme related thing is you get only one try to make your score. Well, meaning you have one life, get hit once and it’s game over.

onetry

You can try the prototype made with Construct 2 there : http://maxgun.fr/ld28/proto/

Controls are :

  • Space to continously shoot
  • Arrows to move
  • F5 to retry when dead

I plan on adding other ennemy types with different patterns.

Now I’ll start coding the real game in javascript, and i should make a small editor to create the level (I think there will be only one, more if I have time).

13 hours in, inspiration and reality :-)

This is my inspiration for the game this LD:

13 hours in, this is the reality XD:

development_1

Well, I will not give up! We will have dinosaurs with lasers before the end of the 48 hours! :-)

As of now, I have finished the main game loop, and the base mechanics (victory, game over, upgrade selection, lives, scores, input selection, enemy timelines, ROAR). Time to start adding art. Let’s see if I can draw pixel dinosaurs!

ROAAAAAR!

Argh!

This has been one hecting Ludum Dare for me so far!

It is only my second LD, so I guess I lack the experience. I initially decided to go with the melonJS framework – although I have no prior experience using it. It sounds like a bad idea, right? It was.

So now, I have chosen to start over, using a more familiar framework, Coquette. Since I had a basic platform engine working, which I sadly did not make available before the competition, I will have to join the Jam instead.

Actual graphics

This is the actual graphics that I’m going to use. I still need to draw the monsters.
Drawing a Miko costume in like 4 pixels is not easy…

Basic mechanics ready!

I am creating a stylized first person stealth game where you are searching for your one and only living relative.

Very cool 😀 Which shaders did you use? 😀

Small update

I came up with an idea I was happy with 2 hours in, and HaxePunk is working great (mostly). I’ve had to spend some time with family today, and I was feeling kinda tired, so I didn’t get much done. But I have some general ideas for what the game is about. It’s a 2D puzzle platformer, no surprise there! My take on the theme is “you only get one companion.” I’m so sleepy I can barely type this out. Good night!

I don’t know if it’s going to work…

Well, I have an idea!
I did many (technical) code this morning, and I have one screenshot! (I am terrible at art)

something
It’s something! 😀

Well now about my plan…
It’s going to be a defense game, where you have to defend against aliens/people/dumb bears.
They come from one side, and you have to kill them. It are way to many, so you get only ONE WALL.
For each thing you kill, you get money, from that money, you can build your base, etc.

I don’t know if it is a good idea thought, but I am going to try it!

One hour in

I’m now a little bit over one hour in. I already figured I will be making a Penguin Feeder Simulation and got the first (and probaly final) art of the penguins done.

penguin_standing

Now I will work on penguin AI (!) and then on the gameplay. I only have time to day so for me it will be a ~14H gamejam. But this was also the case last two times I joined LD so I think I will manage to finish. Hope it will be fun though.

Good luck everybody else

I am in… hopefully

Player

I’m really in hurry those days so I didn’t even have a time to look at the themes yet but hopefully I will join this Ludum Dare. This will be my second LD. My first was #23 and from that point I have either didn’t manage my time to participate or I gave up on the beginning, partly because of my programming skills. But now I will be using Stencyl, so I will be able to concern more about the game mechanics, level design and graphics.

Honestly, I really hate this theme because it is unspecific and also little bit restrictive. But I think I’ve got pretty nice idea. In my game the player will take role of special agent, whose job is to break through secret facility and reveal its secrets. At the beginning of each level, the player has to choose one ability for his character. The player won’t be able to finish level with only this ability thought, so he will has to repeat the level with another. The changes made with the previous character will stay.

First of all I am going to try some character animations because I am afraid that it will be the hardest part. I will need plenty of animations. I made the character in Illustrator, so I can easily manipulate with it and then I will export it to photoshop frame by frame.

Getting Going!

Hey everyone! We’re a group of two developers and one map designer, and this is our first Ludum Dare. We are entering the jam and making a sidescroller game with a mixture of Creative Commons graphics and our own.

The tools that we are using include:

  • LÖVE2D 0.9.0 [engine]
  • Tiled [map editor]
  • GIMP [image editor]
  • Audacity / sfxr [sound effects]
  • Brackets / gedit [text editors]
  • Trello [project management]
  • Google Drive [file synchronisation]

We hope to post builds and pictures as we continue onwards, and we look forward to a great Ludum Dare!

Creating things and then exploding them!

LD2801

So all it does at the moment is create guys and then make them pop after a second or two.

Observant readers may notice that the aesthetic of this game is slightly similar to that of a previous game of mine, Dropblocks. You may think that’s because I’m a talentless hack with no sense of creativity who just keeps rehashing old ideas regardless of whether or not they’re worth anything. In reality it’s because right now I can’t be arsed to fiddle around with textures and this is the only way in which I can make this look nice.
