LD28 December 13–16, 2013

Im ready to get only one!

Hello everyone! Im yetatore, and I participated in 2 LD48, making bizarre games. This time isnt diferent, Im in LD48 and I will make a bizarre game :D… Now, lets check my tools:

Code:

  • python
  • pygame
  • pygramework (a pygame template framework, you can downloadit)

Editors:

  • emacs
  • aseprite
  • milkytracker

So, nice ludum dare to all!

Murder?

I’m thinking a murder mystery! You only get one chance to solve the murder, ASCII style (or not, we’ll see)! This is probably going to be lame.

Sounds good to me. Could be great! Throw in some random names and maybe (this is a stretch a BIG one) add a way for it to “learn” from a news site??? mabe???

Darn it, that was my idea ._.

Let’s start

This is the first time I take part on Ludum Dare, and, although the theme is more challenging than I was hoping for, I think I can come up with something. These are the tools I will be using:

Coding: Java/LibGDX
Graphics: Inkscape, Pinta, Gimp…
Sound (if time allows): sfxr, phone

I am so in

Well, I am in anyway.

libgdx + box2d + Eclipse

Audacity for sound plus my keyboard and cajon.

And Photoshop for graphics…. gonna be a good weekend

Stuff: How to Survive with a

Originally I was really hoping for two colors to win, but then the perfect idea for this popped up. You’re stranded in the woods for seven days, and must survive with only one random item. This could be a hunting rifle, a match, or a bagel. Lots of pointing, clicking and dying!

This was my second idea, but then I went with something else. Hope it turns out well!

Video games!

I’m kind of busy at the moment, but I’ll try to make something. “You only get one”, huh…

Edit: Not gonna be able to make anything playable in time. Too bad, I had kind of a neat idea too. Maybe next time!

So far….

My graphics artist couldn’t participate so I have to take over on graphics. So far I have the character designed and a few tiles. We have concluded that the game is going to be a side-scroller, but yet to decide on objective.

Getting started

Wow, I really was a bit unprepared for the chosen theme, but I’m sure “You only get one” opens a giant door to creativity. I’ll start creating a generic base in GameMaker and then I’ll start to implement something to it.

I really wanted to work with “The begining is the end” though ):

Jamal Da Prelude!

One Convict, One Sledgehammer, One Pistol, One Bullet, One Jumpsuit, and a whole crap-load of blood!

I just realized …

That Blizzard already perfectly executed this theme with their ‘Lost Vikings’ game.

Progress GIF

Lighting, movement, camera panning all done. Next up is dialogue system, and uhhh, stuff to interact with, things you’ll only get one of.

I’m tired.

Lets DO THIS

So ready to do this. Going to use java…because!

Good luck to everyone!

Game decided on

We brainstormed for about 2 hours and came up with a good plan. Something that is doable in less than a day and a half so we can spend the rest of the time refining and possibly adding on.

I hope I’m not too late …

Hi I’m abeing.

Its my first time ever participating on a game jam or competition.

Things I use:

+ GameMaker or Unity

+ Audacity, Ignite, SFXR

+ GIMP, Paint.NET, and maybe Blender

hope this post is categorized correctly :)

High Stakes Text Adventure

I’ll be participating and creating a text adventure using Inform7.

Have fun all!

A sudden change of plan

I was planning to go for a puzzle treasure hunting game… however, an idea struck, I am changing the game a little now. (Luckily I hasn’t dug deeper into the game development yet hehehehe.

Now I am going for top down shooter game, its gonna be fun! 😉

One bullet… for everything 😀

I’m in.

“But Buford, you only got one shot with that gun!”

“I only need one.”

“Where’d you learn to shoot like that?!”

I’m In

First time doing one of these. I’ll be making use of http://threedart.github.io/three.dart/

I am the one.

I’ve heard some people say, “Aww, I had an idea for such and such a theme… but not this one.” I guess it’s fortunate for me that I… spent last week preparing for ALL THE THEMES! That’s right, I ran a gauntlet of mentally exhausting creativity exercises, as well as a brief quest in the æther between worlds (for inspiration, but I always do that).

Now it is time to make… just ONE game.

I will be using Quintus and hope to implement a zelda-like. The theme use will seem extremely obvious at first: then the elegance will hit you. I hope I can be the one I need, and finish this game for us all.

PS. it is 3:42 am here in Paris, France.

wine, games, & Paris

Time to get cracking.

I considered doing this very same thing–but then I thought better. It would have ruined the surprise.

But whatever works for you 😉

Haha, wow. Good job there – I can’t even get myself to prepare for the top themes in the final round 😀

You Only Get One Night

Not quite sure what I am going to do yet, but I think it is going to be based on a night cycle, where you only get a single night to accomplish your goal. Hopefully I can do something with this.

You Only Get One: I’m in.

Hi guys. I’d like to enter. Reserved my decision until the theme was decided. I think I can do something with this.

Language: C#

Library: XNA

Graphics: MS Paint or something

Sound: I dunno, SFXR or whatever

Good luck!

So many ideas…

But you only get one…

A couple of my initial ideas were
You only get one: Game – All LD participants make one giant game…!
You only get one: Chance – after that, you are blocked from playing the game… What the game is, I have no idea…

But I think I will go with something a little more expansive, yet achievable…

You only get one EVERYTHING!!!

I will be coding in javascript, using the awesome Phaser framework found here: http://phaser.io/

I will be attempting to stream as well, but as I am in Australia, with a massive 0.7 upload speed that I share with others, the quality may not be good enough to read what I am doing…http://www.twitch.tv/XekeDeath
But there will be music..!

Let’s get Jammin’.

A friend and I have decided to do the jam together, and this is my first time. We didn’t spend a lot of time thinking up ideas, but You Get Only One is a solid theme.

I managed to hammer out an idea that is both simple, interesting, and I think will provide for fun game-play within 5-10 minutes of seeing the theme, so I couldn’t ask for much more. That idea may evolve. as time goes on, but this is a good start.

Best of luck to all other participants.

Ooh, i might have to play around with it also.

In, and Tools:

Code: Unity, 2dToolkit, iTween

Art: Pyxel Edit

Audio: Ableton Live, Bfxr

I’m going to try to submit something for this one, although I’ll probably have around 24 hours, instead of 48.

One!

Wow….really don’t like it! And by a landslide of positive votes only two themes got positives. And way to go with the most obscure one out of all of them.

I think we need a group therapy session on how not to make it harder to design a game.

Oh well I’m sure I’ll think of something in the morning…good luck all!

PC is done

Pretty sure I have some sort of virus on my PC. Guess I’m stuck with my Mac. Dang.

Byte Raider

In the spirit of a certain mining game featuring plastic bricks, I want to create “Byte Raider”.

Byte Raider will be an RTS where you only get one unit, and you control them directly with first-person controls. Therefore, it is also a First-person Adventure Game.

I wanted to make a game like this already, which is why the main script file for my warmup was “byte-raiders.lua”, but that didn’t get very far.

hmmm…

You only get one i pretty hard I think,

I could only think of abandoning the theme and playing with the words themelves.

Title:  You on LY? Get on E!  -> Platformer

I dunno though, I’ll at least give it a bit and think.

Update!

Progress: I implemented a simple rope  (in fact a pendulum :P). Now I plan to code a random level generator.ropeSim

Wake up, make coffee and check theme.

Being on GMT +1 means seeing the theme later then everyone else*. So I wake up, make myself some coffee and check the theme.

You only get one.

It takes me some time to recover. “That’s not a theme, ” I shout** “That’s a mechanic!”. It’s just like last time, with those ten seconds! Darn it all to heck!

One espresso later, I sit back and think again. What did I do last time? I took the theme and had an enormous amount of fun with it. I scroll through the posts of people’s progress and feel the usual mix of admiration and stomach-churning jealousy. They already got awesome graphics. Someone made a chicken with a gun. People are creating awesome games and having fun!

Having fun. I had a great time last LD. And the one before that. I took the theme and rolled with it and had an awesome weekend where I created something I am really proud of. And that’s just it. Who cares if the theme is a theme or not. Who cares if it’s cool or whatever? Just have fun.

So off to Joror’s I go for a weekend of awesome game creation! I leave everyone with a motivational picture of a penguin!

Get to work!

*Alright, not necessarily, but I like to at least pretend I have a normal sleep-rythm before LD starts.

** Slight dramatization. Didn’t shout. It’s earlyon a Saturday and I don’t want to bother the neighbours.

This is my first time doing this. I just hope I finish something… done in AS3. Here we go….

I’m in!

All right! I like this theme, it’s open to all kinds of ideas I guess. Let me get to work now! I’m going for the jam.

Main tools:

BlitzMax
Photoshop
sfxr or something

Good luck to all!

Here is my idea

So, after waking up at 3:10am I just came out with an idea and some art.

You get only one life

This is my interpretation of the theme. Only one life, an hardcore real time roguelike game.

  • Fully random generated 2d world (Side scrolling)
  • Random generated mob stats and attacks
  • Random generated items
  • One goal “Explore the map and collect X items”

Yes, I know, nothing really original, but let’s see what I get :-)

My tools are:

Still don’t know what and how to do music and sounds effect :-(

here some art:Sprite-0006

Sprite-0008

I have no idea what to make

I’m thinking of basing it loosely on the theme and just make the game I have in my head.
I expect everyone to make platformers or shooters where you get one life and that’s it.

I hope you guys prove me wrong.

the big cube is something, the little cube is something else. maybe something brings stuff to those boxes, maybe not.

I also fear this theme will be nothing but those, but I hope there will be some surprises. I know that is where my first went, but I really did not want to make a game based on that specific idea.

Last time people predicted everyone will make WarioWare clones. Didn’t happen. Don’t underestimate the Ludum Dare community!

YEEEEAAAAAH

A good theme for this Ludum. Finally a theme we all voted to win, unlike that light and dark crap. For this game I’ve decided to make one around a revolving storyline, each game chainging depending on your actions, and what item you start with. Just to show you how RANDOM AND SILLY IT IS (Insert Unencyclopedia quote here), here’s the beta title screen. HUEHUEHUE

Did I mention my game will also be moddable? Ill post a tutorial in the post-compo.

First Night Progress

Me and Verzinsky are planning to do a point and click adventure game. The details are still in the works, but it will involve you having a gun with a single bullet in it. (use wisely!) Not too much done yet, but I have a buttload of pseudo-code and some sketches.

SK1sk2

Unfortunately I can only work for half the day tomorrow due to an untimely flight back home for break. My hopes for tomorrow are to get this blasted dialogue system working smoothly. We will definitely have some delicious in-game art to show as well.

Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/StephanHaldaman
And check out Verzinsky’s blog: http://madverz.blogspot.com/

Just as I predicted

The inexplicably popular, really lame theme won. As usual.

Looks like a real challenge.

First time at this, will be using Unity + F# + VS2012, GIMP & Inkscape, and sounds by sfxr and Ableton (maybe). Since it’s my first attempt, I’ll will strive for actual completion and simplicity. The theme does make me think of something atmospheric like Ico, but that won’t be happening here :)

I shall attempt a small game.

I will be using Love2D, i shall attempt to make something.

Long time watching ludumdare’s never actually properly attempted one.

I would like to think I’m better at programming now than I was last attempt, so we shall see what the outcome is.

Gimp for artwork. Not planning on having anything fancy, if i do add sound, will probably be stuff i record with audacity.

Good luck all.

You only get one… Wife

So, in our early brainstorming sessions we came up with a very… interesting idea. Basically you play as a “differently cultured” man used to having multiple wives. Upon arriving in America, he is forced to choose only one wife, and would be a dating sim. Unfortunately, this idea was vetoed by one of our team members. Like to save the idea!

I thought of maybe one true lover or something… and she dies or leaves or something. Cause people like that kinda stuff, lols.

Tough theme…

Oi, of course I had work to do that stopped from working for ~2 hours. Actually thinking of just doing the jam, after all it is my first Ludum Dare…

EDIT 1: Not too sure where I should update my progress… So I guess here would do…

Anyways, came up with this majestic planning:

Ludum Dare Plan

I’m in!

I’ll use Unity and check out the new 2D support and Graphics Gale / Photoshop for the assets!

This gonna be fun! =D

Something about morse code…?

Alright, first Ludum Dare!

I’m thinking of taking the theme and applying it to “You only get one button.” I will have the player controlling his or her avatar, which can perform one of a number of actions by pressing the button in different rhythmic patterns. I haven’t decided if these patterns will be actual Morse code or not yet.

First I need to write a parser for the rhythms the player enters, and I’ll see where that gets me. Then, I can worry about what actions to make available, and how they are actually called.

Stuff I’m using:

Code

  • Java
  • LWJGL
  • Slick2D

Art

  • Gimp, probably

Music

Here’s to neither crashing, nor burning. Good luck all. :)

Thats awsome. Pure morse code might not be fun, but rythem puzzles would be sick.

First timer!

I’ve thought a bit about the theme “You only get one” and have brainstormed many different ideas…  To  refine my decision, I’m trying to limit myself to thinking only of game conepts in which the traditional thinking would always give you a lot of stuff, but where the limitation of only having one thing would make the concept unique.  Since this is my first game, I’m going to keep it simple (simple art, simple engine, simple code, simple mechanics), but let the complexity and strategy arise out of that.  I’ve settled on remaking an age-old game (I won’t tell you which game until I submit) where the user now has only one controllable object…

First Time In

Trying the LD for the first time . Hope i can make it in time because next monday i have exam…
Tool : Construct 2
Audio : Sfxr
Art : MS.Paint

Anyway can i ask something? Can i use FL Demo for music?

Update l

we have all this! Five hours without sleeping at all (at least the artists), more to come!

It’s not much

But it’s something!

Progress!

Hourly Update 6 – Part 4 Game play art assets finished! Woo!

First, I’ve scaled back the premise of this release. I intend to take this game all the way to a fully completed project. However, for the purposes of this LD, I’m only going to be releasing Chapter I of Invasion. This, however, gives me more time to get things together and polished, and for me to tell the story of Chapter I, and each of it’s 3 parts (which will still give you a substantial amount of game play.)

I have finished all game play assets for Part 4, and I’ve put them together for this quick shot:
part4 test
All that’s let for Part 4 is to get everything in engine and functional, which should take almost no time at all. I’ll save that for later, and move on to the next set of art assets – Part 3, or Missile Command. I’ll be basing most of that artwork off of NATO symbols and the like, so that should be much easier than this, and it’ll be a nice breather. After that, I’ll begin on the most difficult of this chapter’s artwork, that for Part 5, the 1943-inspired level.

http://www.twitch.tv/metalmouth741

I’m ready for my second ludumdare :D

Here’s the programs i using

Game engine : unity 4

Art/Texturing : Gimp

3d modelling :  Blender

😀

One Get You Only

I’m in. Third time.

Code:  Xcode and OkSprites. (OkSprites is my personal C++11 library. It’s missing keyboard input and audio in HTML5, so this should be interesting. Plus, it’s not documented enough for public consumption, so you’ll probably want to avoid it.)

Art: Photoshop CS6

Sounds: GarageBand and SFXR, probably.

Ideas: The obvious choice is a permadeath game, but actually… I have no idea what I’m doing. Good luck, all.

Edit: I’m out. By the first 24 hours, I had a puzzle game working, but it just wasn’t that fun.  So I woke up this morning and decided not to spend the last day polishing it. Bowing out.

“You Only Get One”

Well, I’m being a little ambitious for 48 hours. I’ll be writing a small RPG with battle spawns based on what I go with, you will either be able to select one party member to battle the opponent, you will choose these based on party members stats. Or you will have various attack types and you can only select one for any given opponent. Battles will crop up randomly when outside of a town, you can trade loot for more abilities inside town stores.

Time to grab some sleep and then get started. Good luck everyone.

Excited

I’m doing this again.  I missed the last one due to vacation and the one before that I was working and had to make a small game.  Anyway idea has been made.  If you want to follow I’m blogging over here http://lorenzgames.wordpress.com/.

Using

Blendor/paint: Haven’t decided on 3d or 2d

Unity

I’m In! But I have no idea.

Hey Guys,

This would be an I’m in post. Just woke up as it’s 11am here in Singapore and saw the theme. Was expecting corruption to happen but didn’t seem it did. Well, gonna head out for lunch while tossing various ideas around in my head. Will see what I manage to come up with.

Here’s what I will use

  • Unity
  • NGUI plugin
  • iTween plugin
  • Photoshop
  • 3DS Max
  • Audacity

Hope I manage to come up with something as its my first LD. Read some interesting ideas you guys posted on here and might mix and match and just go along with the flow. Good Luck!

Start!

The theme got us by “surprise” of all the themes available this was not in the top 3 of favorite themes, but turned out that it gave us a great idea for the game! Now let’s get started!

game ideas

Right now I am storyboarding some different concepts for the ideation of the theme and how I see it in the game. Working hardcore with @zeno on some ideas.

I think I’m in

Last time I attempted a ludum dare it was the “you are the villain” theme. I made it a long way through but didn’t finish (long story). My game was called Cutie Face, you played a derranged woman with a monster head who ate people. I spent the entire first day just doing art, because, well, that’s how I roll.

This was Cutie Face, lost to the ages:

cutiehead

I have a concept now for this new theme and am strongly considering giving this dare thing another go. It’ll be a bit tricky for me, and involve a lot of crunching if I hope to finish. Let’s see what happens.

Photoshop and Stencyl.

A tough one

ok, longest I have spent on a game Jam coming up with an idea. This one really stumped me. Lots of ideas, none of them outstanding. Ran a brainstorm and went through some possibilities, found myself exploring one more than the others and from that I have a pretty good handle on an idea.

onlygetone

wont tell you which one till I get a prototype up and running but I am good to go!

tea time

You get One

ok… this is the deal..

first you must pick your hero to out from dungeon, chose ability and remember,  only one ability. find a way out and escape… no need to kill but use you power to save your live.

Europe Awakens…

*yawn*

Goood morning!

*looks at theme*

Noooooo, thats not what I wanted~ *arrrrr*
I was hoping for something with, you know, actual flavour. Not just a mechanic.

Hmmm ok, time to engage inspiration zen-mode. Take the theme lightly, as a hint. Make whatever you like… chase the ideas!

*stares at monitor*

I need more coffee…

Ready for my first Ludum Dare!

I’m making a horrible decision and using SFML/C++ for my game. Luckily I managed to scope it out pretty small, so this Shouldn’t Be Too Hard™.

Here’s a picture of my battlestation!

IMG_20131213_191308

You only get one.. boomerang.

I’m still trying to massage the idea into a game, but I ‘m thinking something like Pengo. You dropped your boomerang, it’s flies off, and have to retrieve it… since you only get one.

This will be my third Ludum Dare… I’m using it as an excuse to experiment with Unity/Futile, so I don’t expect to make it as far as if I was going with more familiar tools (i.e. Flash or iOS native).

Tools:

  • Unity / Futile
  • Photoshop, Illustrator
  • TexturePacker
  • Glyph Designer

Art:

  • I have a license for the Oryx 16-bit fantasy sprites, so it’s super tempting to make use of it (http://oryxdesignlab.com/sprites/16-bit-fantasy-sprite-set)

Brainstorming

I sat down and started sketching around the theme, first just starting with numerals. It would be kind of cool to take the theme literally and do some sort of puzzle/physics game with numerals from around the world. I did a little digging and found this helpful page (http://www.omniglot.com/language/numerals.htm):

Screen Shot 2013-12-13 at 10.12.08 PM

Ultimately I ruled that idea out… being a first time Unity user, I want to do something simple and non-physics-y.

After ruling out literal numerals, I started thinking about how I might do a card game around the theme. Could you do a CCG with only one card in your hand? That might be a bit much on the content front, so how about traditional card games? Poker with one card? The idea isn’t fully baked, but I like the idea of using poker cards. At the very least, rendering and dealing a deck and some cards will get my basic intro to Futile over with.

Not having any open source card art handy, besides brainstorming my first hour has been spent slicing up a public domain SVG into individual card pieces (which can be found at http://openclipart.org/detail/171444/white-oxygen-playing-card-faces-by-lone-coder-171444). I’m thinking some sort of faux-roguelike or dungeon battling game that users poker cards for attack and defense. Or maybe something with drafting…

Hey! Just making sure: You are doing the jam, right? Because in the compo you aren’t allowed to use content (for example art) you didn’t make yourself in the 48 hours. I’m not calling you out here, it’s just that sometimes people forget :)

First LD

Hi I’m Skyrossm, a 14 year old programmer. For the past 2 years I’ve been doing Java, HTML, and PHP. I’m not the best but I try to make the best I can. I hope to make a 2D game using Java and Paint.NET. If I have time I will probably make a game trailer. I’ve started to brainstorm for ideas and I’ve created the base code for mostly everything.  I hope you guys have a wonderful weekend. Bye!

Personally hate the theme though. 😐

First LD Jam!

Hi, my name is Travis William Clark.

My two friends and I, TJ and Grant, are going to make an adorable platformer this weekend for you all which involves bowties and wizard spells. This is our first time making a game together, and our first jam.

Good luck to everyone!

Why hello there!

I was generated randomly! I’m one of twenty-seven combinations!

This is a little buddy I whipped up in MSPaint and rigged up motion to. Next I’ll make some levels!

Progress Update #1 – You Only Get One Dungeon (or YO GOD for short)

Firstly, my programming music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-V7xJ1D8X0 on INFINITE REPEAT.

Secondly, I’ve finished designing the game. It is a one-dungeon RPG. You only get one dungeon (also there’s permadeath)

The state machine implementing is a lot easier than I thought in Lua, considering the lack of OOP principles, in fact it’s easier than in Python! This is because Lua’s variables are global until they are said to be local. The dungeon is always randomly generated, by the way.

Number of Lines: 75, with none of them being game logic. (It’s all state machine setup)

You only get one masterpiece

So here’s the story of polytonia:

Maestro,

The emperor wishes to order a royal symphony from you.
This is your only chance, so you must not fail him.
Make sure to deliver a masterpiece.

The emperor must not be disappointed…
There will be only one masterpiece.

I’m not in!

Abort!

I thought I’d get involved, but realized that two days would throw me off too much with the game I’m working on right now, which I’m hoping to get ready by Christmas.

Hopefully next time!

Update 1: The Idea

Alright..  So we got our idea planned out (no spoilers for now 😛 ).  We’re going to start tomorrow.  Sadly, my brothers might not be around all weekend for full time development, but I’ll be working round the clock from here on out.  We’re gonna do this like it’s a compo, but with an extra day and a team effort.  We’re making all the resources from scratch, all the coding from scratch.  It’s gonna be somewhat easier than the strict Dare, but still a challenge for us..

Lookin’ forward to it though. :3  Ready to work!  8 hours and we get started!  G’night internets!  And Good Luck everyone!

First timer.

I’m in and I really like the theme (it was my favorite out of the bunch). I will probably do something super simple, so hopefully I’ll actually get it done in time!

Hope everyone has fun!

Good Job, Molten!

So I overslept for a an hour.. great.

First Look (And I’m In)

Hello Ludumaniacs. My first post for this competition! I’m not sure how excited I am about the theme, but I am definitely excited about all the tools I am using this time.

Programming: Game Maker Studio, Notepad++

Art: Gimp, Hexels

Sound: Famitracker, BFXR

Music: Pandora (Bastille Radio)

Food: Delicious Homemade Cookies (thanks Stephanie!)

I have already started on my game, and it looks like it is going to be a puzzly-rogue thing. You are only going to be able to hold one weapon at a time.

In other news I <3 Hexels.

Good luck to all, will have more soon!

Uh oh.

2 hours sleep?

That’s just long enough for drunkenness to develop into a hangover.

Let’s jam.

I’m in!

I’m going to use the Love framework for my game!

In addition, I will use middleclass-commons.

I’m trying out Pickle for image editing, BFXR for sound effects, and LMMS for music.

I will make another post if I end up needing additional tools.

We are in for the Jam

Hi all,

Me and xeno42alpha are in for the Jam, yet we hope to complete in 48hours, I will be our representative.

We might use any of the following to create a html5 game:

  • Sublime Text 2, SciTE
  • Gimp
  • Inkscape
  • Google Chrome and Firefox Dev Tools
  • Audacity
  • sfxr
  • Music Creator 6 (was cheap in Steam during a sale^^)
  • ThreeJS (WebGL Library)
  • The Scoreoid Mega Game Assets Pack
  • Anything we find on the web and are allowed to use

Good luck! Have fun! Make some awesome games!

I would recommend skimming over the rules

First Post .o/

Hey .o/

We started to test some characters. Nothing decided yet, but we’re almost there!

Stellar Delusion : LD28 : You Only Get One!

Ludum Dare 28
December 13th-16th Weekend
Theme: You Only Get One

didn’t really schedule time for this one
figured I’d take a look
to see what I could come up with
and if inspired put maybe 4-8hrs into it.

You Only Get One…
of what…?
life?
Planet?
Chance?

after the last Ludum Dare in the Seattle area
we had a get together and showed off the games we made.
one in particular had a social, conscious theme to it.
to raise awareness and make a point, yet have a little fun.
kind of liked that idea, but how could I do that.

I’ve been involved in a few ecological, technology, and some non-profits the past several years.
and have a few pet projects that I think are important
that we should be working on globally.
game dev is suppose to be sort of a break from it,
but could any of these be made into a fun game in 72hrs?

3d Printing…. maybe…

BioChar…nope

Enclosed Self Sustaining Closed Loop Ecosystems… nope..

Asteroid threat to all life on earth,
or at least our civilization and higher life forms…. maybe…!

So
one planet, one chance, one life….
protect the earth from the asteroid threat…

Been tinkering around with Stencyl and rapid game prototyping a few months back with my previous LD27 entry.
and working/playing with a space adventure RPG concept the past year…
so can use some of the assets and experience I’ve learned from that to create a mini level
maybe in a few hours or so…
if not too complex.
so here goes.

Stellar Delusion : LD28 : You Only Get One!
Tools:
IDE – Build Environment – Stencyl (2.2)
Build with – new fry’s cheap ass Win8 laptop
Run Platform – Flash – Web
System – Mac, Win, Linux
Graphics – Inkscape, Paint.Net
Graphics source (other)- web (jpl, nasa).

we’ll see if I can muster getting something out…

Game Play – tbd (forthcoming)

8:30 pm start
Game Play
Defend Earth from Asteroid Threat
Fly ship in space,
Earth, Ship, Asteroids have gravity interaction that pull on each other.

threat detection satellite indicates asteroid threat imenet.
HUD radar shows threat location,
fly to asteroid and safely deflect trajectory.
don’t run out of fuel,
don’t crash into Space Rockz!
don’t allow Space Rockz to crash into earth.
enemies….
The Big One, meteor swarm, comet,

Mission One.
flyout and check on rock.
plant tracking beacon.

Trajectory Deflector
Gravity Tractor
Grapple
big cadabooom!

Game ReName: Stellar Delusion – Space Rockz!

Game Assets Needed:
Ship (anim for thrust) – done from assets
Earth – NASA or JPL – need to do – done (WikiMedia Commons)
Sun – Done (Nasa)
Moon – Done (Wikimedia Commons)
Asteroid(s) – NASA or JPL – need to do (also render with POV-Ray)
Satellite (maybe)
Tracking Beacon (maybe)
Stars background

Code Needed: 2d Gravity for n-bodies (head hurty)

Scene – Earth, Moon (maybe). asteroid, ship.

HUD: distance to target, size, number, etc. fuel.
Radar: all on map.

8:45pm

ok, got Sun, Earth, and Moon images cut down and into useable form for sprites
took old 5 ship image anim stills and imported all into stencyl

9:45pm
add collisions, ship animations sequences, and thruster controls.
play around with game a bit take screenshot.
Screenshot 2013-12-13 22.11.06

10:20pm
need to take break and think where this is going..
having planets collision detection on (and not just a sensor)
hmm…makes it so you can actually land on them…(or an asteroid for that matter).
having them so they are immovable makes them a planet.
need to add localized gravity (this is the headache that will prob be difficult to work out)
post and take break for night…
unless I can’t sleep and really want to tackle gravity…

or background image…
The Milky Way panorama
here is a test one from
http://www.eso.org/public/images/eso0932a/
turns out AWESOME!

11pm.

A bit more playtesting,
screen resize and screen shot.
Screenshot 2013-12-13 23.13.14

Playtest…
http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/23112
controls are arrow keys for left, right, foward, and reverse thrust.
no gravity yet…
planet collisions are on…
no asteroids yet…
considering it’s only 3hrs work not to bad start.
mostly spent finding the right images and editing them down.

10:30pm Sat..
didn’t get around to working on things more late on saturday.
grabbed and edited asteroid image from a JPL site and added to game.
collision detection now on for ship and asteroid which has a far larger mass than
your ship. slightly random starting velocity, direction, and rotation.
played around with actor placement. liking the new wrap around the inner solar system at the sun…
and no collision with the sun…
still need gravity…

(btw scaled collison bounds are not working correctly and I have no idea why…
so everthing must remain the same size for now)

12:45pm Sat night. done for the night.

9PM – 12am Sunday…
yep, gravity certainly was a pain. had to go back through some old code I did months back to figure it out.

got gravity functioning between asteroid and earth farily decently.
may have to tweak it later, but fairly realistic for radial gravity between 2 bodies.
need to add interaction between ship later if I have time.

as it stands it’s more of a gravity simulator and space flying demo that is partially finished.
(with pretty art assess)…

so guess the working name is still
Stellar Delusion – LD28 – You Only Get One… Planet!
game jam entry here
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=19657

12am -2am Sunday night…
couple of hours playtesting,
just hanging around flying through space
and watching the giant rock tumble past the earth…
noticed distance numbers between planetary bodies where off a bit… dug through the code and fixed (half distance of sprites from centers calculation was not done right).
now shows negative distance meaning it’s crossing earth’s path…
getting some good ideas on where to expand from here…
hopefully more time to implement before end of Jam monday.
nite all.

3pm – 6pm Monday.
got in a couple more hours before the end of the jam to add failure to protect from impact alert, and restart scene…
would be nice to add… close call in a particularly close planetary shave… or minor, and major impact depending on how bad the hit was…

now off to the post Ludum Dare 28 Meetup to show it off and see what everyone else did locally.

Hi Larry!

In, a little late

Hi! I’m in for the jam. I’m not yet experienced enough in Flash so I’m going to use HTML5 for my game.

Tools:

  • HTML5/CSS3/Javascript
  • Sublime Text 3
  • Firefox+Firebug
  • Gimp and/or Pickle, depending on my idea

Hopefully I can complete this jam for once.

Rejected Game Ideas

Classic Mac Emulator: You only get one mouse button

QW: The one-legged spinoff of QWOP

Firefly: The Game – You only get one season

Justin Bieber’s Lyrics Challenge: You only get one word to use in a song, over and over again (baby baby baby, oh)

2 hours progress

I’m almost done with the first set of assets, then on to programming.

The game is about a communist Russian who waits patiently in the cigarette line to find he only gets ONE cigarette.

His mission is obvious to any smoker.. find more cigarettes at ANY cost, even if it means taking down the whole damn iron curtain!

Mockup 2 - One cigarette.

If you nick-fit bar is low you will gain super-strength, but if it is depleted you will become sluggish.

I intend to add a lot more details when I’m done, but for now it’s time to make a game out of this…

Oh no!

This is it, my first LD compo has started, and I literally got the theme I dislike the most. I got no idea what I’m gonna create but let’s hope for the best, shall we?

Good luck everyone!

Concept Contest?

Alright, my concept is set, it’s time to work. If you guess what I’m going for, you get a shiny new award! Here’s a picture of my whiteboard:

Guess away! Good luck everyone!

First Jam

Howdy, this will be the first Game Jam for me, good luck y’all!

Dev Environment: Unity3D

Hiya =3

I just thought i should mention that i will be using:

Programing – Game Maker 8

Graphics – PyxelEdit & Aseprite

Audio –  Sfxr

Music – FL Studio

Additional Libraries – Brod’s Platform Engine [http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=452605]

Progress!

Screen Shot 2013-12-13 at 11.00.19 PM

Incredible title, no?

I’ve got the tile map displaying and spawning the player object.  Working on the movement stuff now.  The idea is, when you click, you’ll shoot a bullet towards the mouse.

I have that working, so now I need ricocheting

It’s 5 o’clock now…

So, I stood up…
“You only get one”. I have to think! No ideas yet!
Well, it’s going to be 2D, that’s for sure.

One ring to bind them

I was so set on “Corruption” and “Contamination” as the hopeful winners that the theme announcement irked me.

Then it kind of hit me after an hour. A big part of my corruption/contamination thoughts were corrupting the enemy AI in which case they would also become corrupt-ers of the world. Merging the “You Only Get One” theme with that might add a lot of nuance. You can only have one corrupted agent at a time, if you corrupt another enemy agent, then the currently corrupted will revert to it’s regular form – which could be very bad if it reverts deep in your territory.

Like a DotA format except you can force a team switch of anyone in a short proximity. Do you corrupt one of two attackers on your tower to insure it remains standing or do you fight it solo instead of taking letting your corrupted on the north lane off the leash where he’s tangling with another enemy. The odds have to be tough though, like 1 versus 4 tough, in which case it’d be 2 vs. 3 with a corrupted. Even or close odds would make the decision of whether to switch or not less serious.

Any one enemy may become your property, but only one. I thought it was a shit theme at first, but it could be fun, time to fire up Blender and get to work.

I am in

I was really hoping for a simple theme, cause today at like 2 I was asked to work in the morning … UGH!!!

I dont hate the “you only get one” theme, though it did take some thinking. Since I loose out on at least 4 hours tonight, 7 hours on saturday I needed to keep it simple. What I decided on was a top down racer (think spy hunter style, without the spy aspect) and to keep it simple doing it in a text mode. Theme connection being “you only get one chance to save your career/girl/world, whatever by beating this mad dash to the end”

While I am in a text mode, hell might as well do it on a vintage PC, 386? nah talking about my Apple IIc, 1Mhz 8 bit monster. Though I am very hopeful to make it into the compo, at worst case I can knock this out for the jam.

I dont actually develop on the Apple II, frankly its a bit tedious, especially in time sensitive things (but really when was the last time that completing an apple II program was time sensitive)  So my tools are Notepad ++ and Applewin Apple II emulator. I do constantly check things on the real metal so my third development tool is a pretty nice 1984 Apple IIc.

LD on SON!
