LD25 December 14–17, 2012

Tip: DON’T vote up shallow themes!

Let’s narrow down our selection of themes to be more unique! Generic, shallow themes like “monsters”, “good VS evil”, “mouse only” and “normal” are BAD THEMES!

When you vote on a theme, first think “what game would I be able to make with this theme? how much time would I need to spend on thinking the concept through?”

And only then vote.

Let’s make this Ludum Dare special!

Vote on themes here.

First Dare in js/HTML

I’m excited to be planning my first game competition! I’ve set aside the weekend and my girlfriend may be keeping me fed and productive.

Since my skills are only in web development, I’ll be making the game in Javascript and HTML5. I am contemplating using a framework such as backbone, and I know there are other game-specific frameworks out there, but i think i will probably end up just coding it all with plain javascript and jQuery.

Is there a way to search games from past competitions to see only those that are web-based and mobile friendly? I’d like to look around for inspiration.

I can’t wait to see what the theme is…

If it’s necessary to explicitly say it: “I’m in!”

My first Ludum Dare!

This is the first time I’ll be competing in Ludum Dare and I’m pretty excited.  My coding skills could use some warming up so I guess I know what I’ll be doing for the next 9 days or so.  That and waiting for inspiration to strike, I guess.  My tools:

Coding: C# (Unity3D)

Graphics: Paint.NET

Music/Sound: Audacity, plus my beater acoustic.

Ludum Dare 25

I’m in…

The usual, Java, Netbeans, Paint.NET, all that jazz.

Entering the Jam this time so having a friend do all the art and maybe music assets.

Fun times, and good luck to everyone else.

Follow along with me on my website, www.icodedatshit.com

Hack-a-Jam Competition in 2 Days!

After a long 4 months, the Hack-a-Jam is back, and starting in 2 days!

To join, you must create an account in the Posting section of the website, and then start posting! Note: All posts have been deleted since the last Hack-a-Jam, so that is why only I have posts there. However, I do encourage you to become social in the forums and ask questions.

The Hack-a-Jam is a regular game development competition/jam where you must create a game within a set amount of time. However, it is not like any other gaming competition/jam. In the Hack-a-Jam, there is an infinite amount of winning categories, and no overall winner. While winners still must have superb games to win, there are no set winning categories, and there will always be multiple winners. Also, the theme will be voted on by the community, after they are submitted in the forums (Posting section) under the topic Theme Posting, in the Rules and Announcements forum.

To prove how unique the winning categories are, these are previous winning categories and other possible categories:

Most Psychedelic Visuals
Most Deaf People After Hearing The Game
Most Angry Bongos Involved
Most Rage-free
Most rage-induced
Most Suggestive Content Without Crossing The Line
Shortest Functional Game
Most Random and/or Annoying Sound When Picking Things Up
Most Things On Screen Without Lag or Crash

Like most game development competitions, there are rules, however, the rules here are more laid back and simple:

1. All game content must be created within the set time. Note: You can use other music, placeholder graphics, etc. as long as you are allowed to!
2. Your game is not required to follow the theme, but would greatly improve your chances of winning. Unless almost every other game is not following the theme, it is almost guaranteed that your game won’t win anything.
3. You must work alone, and you must create everything included in the game.
4. All game creation tools are permitted, such as GameMaker, Photoshop, Flash, Paint, etc.
5. All game extensions/DLLs are permitted. If you want to make it multiplayer (if you are using GameMaker), go ahead and use 39dll.

What do the winners get?

The winners will have the opportunity to post a message on the Hack-a-Jam website itself, whether it be something random and funny, like “I LOVE banana chicken pancakes”, or an advertisement such as “Play my new game TODAY!”. The winners will also get badges to show off to their friends and the gaming community.

The official 4th Hack-a-Jam starts in 2 days (on Friday), so ready up for a double game jam week (if you are joining to Ludum Dare too next week)!

Gearing up for LD25

I wasn’t sure whether or not I’d be doing LD25, but after I decided to organize the Cleveland Game Developers meetup for it, I’m looking forward to a weekend of no sleep and vigorous game development.

Hopefully the theme will be inspiring and I won’t have any major technical glitches.

My tools, once again, for this jam will be:

  1. Game Maker Studio
  2. bfxr
  3. paint.net
  4. MAYBE some other apps.  I’m tempted to try to compose something with famitracker, but I’m not confident enough to say that I’ll be doing that for sure. I also keep wanting to find a happy relationship with a purpose-built sprite editor, so I can do better animations and stuff, but I haven’t put enough time into the candidates that I’ve been learning about still.

I’m also not sure what I want my goals to be for this jam.  My previous games have featured microorganisms.  I’d like to try something different with this one.  I feel like I defaulted to microogranisms for LD24 because they’re easy to draw, and are simple enough animals that you can program them very simply. But I’d like to find ways of programming that makes other types of games possible for me to create in 48 hrs and that means figuring out ways to simplify other types of programming problems.

I’ve been reading a bit about how to implement platformer games in GameMaker, so perhaps I’ll attempt a platformer this time.  I won’t make any final decisions before the theme is announced, because I think it’s important to allow the theme as much freedom to drive the design of the game as possible, but I guess I’m hoping for a theme that inspires me to attempt a platformer this time out.

We’ll see, I guess.

Warmup Weekend – Ludum Dare 25

No surprise, Warmup Weekend is back!

Between now and Ludum Dare 25′s start time, you should make sure that your tools work. Make some art, import it, and draw it on screen. Make some sounds, import them, and play them on cue. If you’re using a new development tool, learn it.

Bullet point summary:

  • No rules or limits. This is practice.
  • Learn your development tools! Write some code, run it.
  • Make some art, get it on screen, make it move.
  • Print some text to the screen. Print some text to a log (if applicable).
  • Make some sound, get it in game, make it play.
  • If you’re motivated enough, make your experiments in to a game!
  • Make something that should take “hours”, not 2 days.
  • Then package it up, put it online.
  • No time or day limit. But if you have no other plans this weekend, why not?

If you like what you’ve done, feel free to share it.

More Jams going on: Hack-a-Jam, Indie Speed Run

25 Years Of Ludum Dare

None of them were seen again…until Monday.

It’s time for me to join again after skipping the last Ludum Dare.

I’ll be using libgdx, Ableton Live, Photoshop. Maybe I’ll go 3D this time. Looking forward to spending my Saturday morning next week brainstorming tons of insane/impossible ideas.

See you around.

Last I checked, 25 years ago was 1983, pre-internet and definitely not a time Ludum Dare existed… What, is the picture supposed to be in the future or something? :)

I’m in!

I’ll be entering Ludum Dare #25 and using the following:

  • Java
  • Paint.NET – http://www.getpaint.net
  • libGDX – http://libgdx.badlogicgames.com
  • Liberal quantities of panic coding

I think instead of hosting my game as an applet, a format despised by many, I’ll package it as a .zip using a launcher and JRE appropriate for the platform. It’ll be a larger download but it’ll save anyone from installing Java on their system or in their browser. Bring on the 14th!

I think I’ll be getting in on this upcoming Ludum Dare, it really is PERFECT timing. I get done with my finals for college on the 13th of December. Of course, I’ll have to do something fun that afternoon to celebrate before shutting myself in for 48 hours. 😛

I’m wondering what code I can put together now that might be useful to have when it begins.

Chances are this time around I will be using:

Processing (Language/IDE/Compiler/Amazingness)

GIMP (for Graphics)

Milky Tracker (for Music)

Traveling

I’m going to try to do this; however, that Sunday I’m traveling from PDX to LEX.

I guess I’ll see how things turn out.

IM IN! [edit]

This will be my second Ludum Dare… do I continue with Haxe or should I go for Gameplay3d? Haxe all the way! Also it looks like I’ll be teaming up with my good friend Omen.

Looking forward to meeting fellow LD’ers at Crashspace in LA. Will any of you be there during the day on saturday?

We’ve been putting together an app skeleton to keep from having to write a bunch of boiler plate.
Anyone interested can find it on Bitbucket

First Ludum Dare

First Ludum Dare for me, but super excited for an excuse to be doing some solo game development!

As far as tools go, it depends on how the theme turns out, but at this point I’m planning:

Development:
Unity3D

Art:
Maya (3D)
Photoshop (2D)

Sound:
Pixitracker, Audacity.

Don’t know what else to add; I work better under pressure, and I want to get something made. This provides the perfect reason!

Gaz

I’m in… AGAIN!

Back for Ludum Dare 25! Woo!

Unfortunately my 48 hours will be reduced to about 36 due to other plans.

Will still be using Unity3D, and might be a NOT first person game, but I’m not sure yet 😛

I now have the tools to live-stream, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort because I’m not sure how many people will even watch it. If I do it’ll be down at http://www.twitch.tv/robproductions

I don’t know what to do 😛

Good luck, all! :)

MO-TI-VA-TIONNN !!!

I guess, I’m in again :D. YES. Because it’s awesome to make games! And because of the re-design of the website, due to which I just found out: holy moly, PoV, you are the one who made Smiles ( O.O’)   . I didn’t know! I didn’t realize! orz. Gotta do my best to make an awesome game as well ;)!!!

I’m in!

My OC, Pearl String, getting ready for LD and Christmas
Very well! I shall join this Ludum Dare event, FOR THE THIRD TIME!
Even though it is more than a week left until it starts I can already feel the hype build up! ALL THE HYPE! After looking through the themes in the Slaughter poll, I really hope for either the Dream theme or the Tower theme. I already have some vague ideas for what to do in those themes. Better to have a tiny idea prepared than nothing at all.As for language and tools. I’m not fully decided yet on all things. I am 99,9999~% sure that I will create a pixel art game, but I do feel tempted to try to make hand drawn graphics for the game. The thing that stops me is the lack of experience with hand drawn animations and the fact that we only have 48 hours.

Language and IDE
Java in Eclipse or C#/XNA in Visual Studio

Graphics
Pixel Art in Game Maker

Audio
Sin/Saw waves (still looking for a tool to make waves in the first place)

Source for ideas
Staring out the window. Tis a great way to get ideas! (I am not responsible if you would fall into procastination while doing this.)

Other tools
Livestream, friends, chat, TONS of soda and loads of music.

Edit: I just want to add the link to my livestream for anyone who would like to pop in completly randomly and startle the buck out of me. [Link]

A Challenger Appears!

Yo, mappel6 with DragonElf Games, a (very) small indie game company that’s really more of a pastime and composed of approximately 3 people, will be entering the Ludum Dare 25 competition. That would be me. Anyways, as a formality, I’ll be listing my tools here:

~DarkBASIC Professional (Coding)

~Paint.NET and Microsoft Paint (Graphics)

~Dr. Petter’s sfxr (Sound Effects)

Also, if I am allowed, I will use music from two libraries:
~SoundCloud

~This person’s Noteflight, upon recieving permission just in case: http://www.noteflight.com/members/3cdf5af389c28796ae61d857cc18cfac43371a28

Again, this is only if I am confirmed to be able to use these, and if I can’t, I’ll get a VST from http://www.vstplanet.com/index.htm upon the occasion that I have time to make music for my game. I ask that the admins give a ruling upon this, I saw that we were able to use things like SoundCloud but I don’t know where that was and if it was only for the Jam, etc.

Now, about streaming to twitch.tv, I will not be streaming this year. Depend on how my game is received in the community, I will start next year. Good luck to all of you guys, and if I’m not taken up by sleep and school, I will try to judge.

Ludum Dare 25 Warmup – 7 games in 7 days, Day 3 done.

Well, that was quite long title. But yeah, I’m progressing nicely, with new minigame – a Tetris clone. Today I managed to finish in 8 hours (started immediatly after work, no distractions other than cooking soup, which gave me much needed breathing time). I’m really starting to feel Unity working for me again. It’s a nice feeling.

You can read full entry, with dissection of what I wanted to do and what I managed to do here. You can also play the game there, if you want (though it’s nothing special, obviously), as it is a Unity web player game.

And now it’s time to go to bed, I need to rest properly, can’t afford to burn out before Ludum Dare, right? Otherwise, what’s the point? See ya all later!

Still looking for fellow jammers to team up with!

I’d really like to jam with a good group of other people. More time plus a decent team equals a better game all around. So, so far the team is:

-Me

-Wixio

-Other person who may or may not be able to jam

I don’t really care what your skill set is. If you want to make a game with other people or you’ve always wanted to collaborate before, then sign up below!

Get in on Team Jam today!

I can make music really fast. Can I be in?
07. Dec 2012 · 20:13 UTC
Oh and heads up. I work on weekends. From 2pm-8pm my time and finals to study for. So I’ll have a small window, BUT I can make music fast. So i’ll just have to chime in, see where we’re at, and compose something. Hopefully that’s cool with you.
