LD24 August 24–27, 2012

I’m in!

This will be my fifth Ludum Dare event and the third game Jam for my local game dev group. I’ll be using a lightweight HTML5 framework that I’ve been using for game dev for a while now. I keep meaning to write some docs on it and share it on Github. Not sure I’ll be able to get that done this week though.  Good luck everyone, there are a couple mind blowingly amazing themes this time!

IDE : Webstorm / Notepad++

Sound: SFXR and Caustic 2.0

Graphics: Paint.Net, maybe Spriter or PyxelEdit

Also: Chronolapse, Freemind / XMind, Dropbox for hosting

Doing it.

Will be meeting up with the Cambridge folk again for this one, will try and focus more on graphics and sound this time than I have previously.

I’ll be working in Haxe/NME/FlashDevelop/Possibly hopscotch.

Using Java or Processing? Free hosting at StaticVoidGames.com!

Hello fellow Ludum Dare-ers! Warning: blatant self-advertising ahead!

As some of you may know, I run a website devoted to indie game programming in Java and Processing at StaticVoidGames.com. I’ve designed the site with programming contests like Ludum Dare in mind. You no longer have to worry about time-consuming deployment or web development, so you can spend more time focusing on the fun part- actually making your game!

Just follow the step-by-step uploader, and you have a decent-looking website showcasing your game as an applet, a webstart, and a downloadable jar. At the very least, it’s better than putting your game on dropbox or mediafire. Not only is it free, but developers can actually specify their own ad codes to make money off their games!

I’m working on adding new features (I just added a notification system) and tutorials all the time. I’m very open to suggestions and I love hearing your feedback! But even as-is, the site is useful to both pros who don’t feel like dealing with deployment and web development (especially during the crunch time of Ludum Dare) and complete novices who want to take a look at the tutorials and source of real games for help.

So, check it out! StaticVoidGames.com

Good luck during Ludum Dare!

I’m going for it!

This will be my second Ludum Dare.  I actually achieved some degree of success with LD #23, so I might be able to do it again.  The goal was to spend the last month practicing for this (and improving my abysmal art skills), but I’ve been suffering from a huge lack of motivation for most of the month.  But still, I’m in it.

  • Code: LÖVE + a library of code that I’ve yet to name (I’ll post it a couple of days, because I follow rules), because it worked so well last time.
  • IDE: Geany.  It’s nice, but I wish I had a better IDE for Lua and LÖVE.
  • Graphics: Gimp, Pinta, and possible Aseprite.
  • Sound: Sfxr and Audacity
  • Music: Ardour, Hydrogen, my mic, and my instruments.

I’m going to neglect social obligations so hard this weekend!

I’ve done a few mini LD’s but this will be my second main LD. I had SUCH a great time last time and learned a lot from it. This time around I’m collaborating with someone and hope to learn more still. :)

new blood!

First LD here!

Totally pumped. Been looking forward to a good challenge for along time! :)

Code: AS3/Flashpunk/FlashDevelop

Music: not sure yet!

SFX: sfxr

Graphics: Gimp

Any suggestions for a music composing program? That area is totally new to me! 😀

I’m in

After an okay finish in the previous LD (Theme was Tiny World), I’m really looking forward to this! Hopefully I can use my time better now with the practice garnered from the previous event.

I expect to use the same toolkit as last time:

  • Unity 3D
  • Audacity
  • Bfxr
  • Sketchup
  • Blender
  • Pyxel

And whatever else I need at the time.

Good luck to all participants, and lets keep the overdosing on caffeine to a minimum!

I’m in, but WTF happened to July and August

So yeah, that whole “I’m going to make some libraries and learn my tools”. Never happened. Oh well.
Here’s what I’ll be using:

  • Python and Pygame
  • Either cx_freeze or pyinstaller to build executables
  • Some home-grown libraries: (Funcompose as a rendering engine on top of pygame, Pythfinding is a pathfinding library written in pure python that has the feature of sometimes working correctly, pyinstaller_tools as a layer on top of pyinstaller if I go that way, and calcui to help with laying out user interfaces (if I start getting fancy with them).
  • One of the sound effects generators in the Ludum Dare tools section.
  • FL Studio for music.

It is all McFunkypants fault I am doing this! (first time)

First all those posts about Game Jams, then his book I read. I just had to get first hand experience. Too bad I will have very limited time Saturday because of a birthday. Still having fun while doing this seems key!

IDE: FDT 5
Graphics: pen and paper, GIMP
Level editor: TILED
Texture Atlas: Texture Atlas Generator
Sounds: Cfxr
Language: Action Script 3
Framework: Home made framework
Timelapse: Automator with a bash script

About the framework. I started on it this month. The purpose of this framework is to make prototypes fast. Most people I know can run a flash application. So it made sense to make this framework in Action Script 3. The framework is far from finished.

I am using an altered version of the animation class which is described here.  So all credits for this class goes to Pixelpracht.

As an example I add some frames taken from http://2dgameartforprogrammers.blogspot.nl/2011/12/game-assets.html It is a free Block Buddies Dummy.

You CAN do it! Simplicity is your best friend. Keep working on your framework all this week. Good luck and have fun!! =)

I’m in, and here’s what I’m using (mostly):

I am definitely in now, unless my cold disrupts all thinking D:

Most of the stuff I will be using:

IDE: Processing IDE
Graphics: pen and paper, Graphics tablet, GIMP, mypaint, paint.NET.
Level editor: coded by hand
Music:(as music is my hobby:) banjo, violin, keyboard, mandolin, flute, ardour, audacity(and the program ;D ) a good mic and some other instruments (I’ll specify on my first release).
Language: Processing
Librarys: don’t know yet, they have to be built into processing, though, so I will say on my first release
Timelapse: Chronolapse on both machines, and I can hopefully get a webcam hooked up to chronolapse too. 😉

and a fujifilm finepix 21500 to do some of the photos(food and such).

I’ve probably forgotten a few things, so I’ll let you know in my first release!

good luck to everyone else!

I’ll have a look at that, thanks :)

Not Failing this time!

So. I uh, may have failed last time. I wrote an entire ASCII game engine in C#/.NET but then lost all creativity. Heh. Back then I was still very much a noob at programming and game development in general. But I spent the entire Summer programming and doing almost nothing else.

BUT I WILL NOT FAIL THIS TIME!!!….I hope

I’m starting my junior year of high school(11th grade) on the 27th, the day after the competition ends. SoooOoOoOo I will be doing LD24 as my last adventure of Summer! I’ll be locking myself in my room with whatever $30 can buy me from pizzahut and a few 2 liters bottles of Soda.

Language:   Python

Library(s):  Pygame! And pyOpenGL! And probably some other libraries but mainly Pygame & pyOpenGL!

Art: Gimp

Sound/music: Not sure yet, might grab some public domain sound effects or something like that.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t know that ^^^ was against the rules. I will use a sfx generator instead :)

Good luck to all other Ludum Dare participants!! <3333

Love,

The newest addition to the Ludum Dare community, Mattykins.

I’m entering!

This will be the first time I am joining in on this competition! Knowing me as I well as I do I may never actually finish. The reason I am posting this is because I figued I should say what tools I am using even if no-one cares. Here they are:

Netbeans

paint.net

anvil studio

GX SCC

my brain

There it is! Good luck to my fellow competitors!

Some of us care! And don’t tell yourself you won’t finish, because then you really won’t. Instead, blind yourself with motivational tapes and other various forms of things that make you say “I CAN DO THIS!”

wtf is Netbeans?

I’m in, and am warming up as well.

So here I am with a framework I know little of, but enough to probably make a decent game in: Love2D. I had a gripe with pygame, as it really was to basic, and did not do things that well for me for some reason. It just kind of sucked for some reason, and it is really, really, slow. However, I have found a (small) appreciation for lua. It has a lot of quirks, like no continue statement, globals by default, etc. but I can manage.

So that’s not very important. But what is important is that I’ll be doing a warmup game until Thursday (which is the day I start my sophmore year in high school, what fun.) Problem is is that I still have a summer AP assignment to finish. Bummer.

Anyway, I did a random dice roll (not really) and the theme from the list I got was Journey. This will be fun.

And if you’re wondering, yes I upvoted both Kittens and Evolution.

The mythological hero, setting forth from his common-day hut or

castle, is lured, carried away, or else voluntarily proceeds, to the

threshold of adventure. There he encounters a shadow presence that

guards the passage. The hero may defeat or conciliate this power

and go alive into the kingdom of the dark (brother-battle, dragonbattle;

offering, charm), or be slain by the opponent and descend in

death (dismemberment, crucifixion). Beyond the threshold, then,

the hero journeys through a world of unfamiliar yet strangely intimate

forces, some of which severely threaten him (tests), some of

which give magical aid (helpers). When he arrives at the nadir of

the mythological round, he undergoes a supreme ordeal and gains

his reward. The triumph may be represented as the hero’s sexual

union with the goddess-mother of the world (sacred marriage), his

recognition by the father-creator (father atonement), his own divinization

(apotheosis), or again—if the powers have remained

unfriendly to him—his theft of the boon he came to gain (bride-theft,

fire-theft); intrinsically it is an expansion of consciousness and

therewith of being (illumination, transfiguration, freedom). The

final work is that of the return. If the powers have blessed the hero,

he now sets forth under their protection (emissary); if not, he flees

and is pursued (transformation flight, obstacle flight). At the return

threshold the transcendental powers must remain behind; the

hero re-emerges from the kingdom of dread (return, resurrection).

The boon that he brings restores the world (elixir).

What the hell, I’m down!

This will be my first time entering, probably won’t finish but let’s give it a shot. I’ll be using blender game engine and the gimp.

Almost forgot!

Wow, I almost forgot that LD was going to be this week! But no harm done :)

Anyway, need to stack up on loads of coffee this time around (it didn’t even last 5 hours last time), I will probably be using the same firepower i used for the previous LD:

  • IDE: FlashDevelop
  • Programming Language: ActionScript 3.0 (if you like as3, download my simple, yet awesome wallpaper: http://sauronzdev.com/lib/public/images/as3_wallpaper.png)
  • Engine: LOL, what engine? (real men don’t need phony engines)
  • Libraries: TweenLite, Hi-ReS Stats and others depending on the game I want to make
  • Graphics: Photoshop for pixel graphics (yup you read that right)
  • Audio: Probably SFXR, but if I have a lot of time left I might go into Fruity Loops

I will also try to stream my pathetic coding:  http://www.twitch.tv/sauronzdev

Good luck too all other game devs out there! But most importantly HAVE FUN 😀

Lion in !

I’m in for my second time, with Flash/AS3/Photoshop/Ableton…

*smacks hand on desk* IN

December of 2011, I found Ludum Dare shortly before it began and prior to some important business. As such, I spectated.

April of 2012, I decided to try my hand at it but quickly realized that, again, other things were more important that needed my attention. So I ducked out rather quietly.

Now, I believe it may be time. I may still have work, but I want to do it this time! LET’S GO!

So then, so far the plan is:

Language: Python 3.x
Libraries: Pygame
Graphics: GIMP and/or MSPaint
Sound: Not sure yet… sfxr perhaps?
Music: Anvil Studio (yay MIDI)

Also, I have a bit of a to-do list before Friday…

1. Start a dropbox account or the like. After all, without a way to get the game on the web…
2. Actually get an executable going for one of my old games. Yeah, I have yet to move beyond hard code when it comes to my games as of yet, and that might need to change. Need to figure out py2exe or something.
3. Once those two are done, maybe I will post the executable to the dropbox to see if all went well. I have a game I made for a mini LD some time back that never made it to the net that I may try number 2 with and then post.

First time soloing since LD17

This will be my first LD going completely solo since the Islands themed jam back in 2010.
I’ll most likely be using LOVE2d, but may decide to try Unity or Flashpunk, depending on the theme.

Yeah! Compo all the way

let’s see how that works out…

Hi, I’m Richard and this will be my first Ludum Dare.

I’ll be using Javascript (2D <canvas> context, no WebGL), Firefox/Iceweasel (I’m on a Debian machine), Chromium, and the one true editor™ (vi).

No libraries or engines, no hand-painted graphics, no audio (probably – not sure about that one, yet).

The competition starts at 3am local time, so I’ll likely miss the first few hours. I plan to use that fact as an excuse in the case of me failing to submit a game… 😉

It’s gonna be fun!

I’m In! LD Iteration 0

I shall be making an attempt to build a game, for the first time.

Tools!

  • Language: Clojure + ClojureScript (targeting Javascript)
  • Engine: My brain and HTML Canvas…mainly canvas
  • Libraries: probably at least Monet
  • Music: I have no idea, whatever I can work out how to use
  • Graphics: Pixen, Pixelmator, that sort of thing probably

I’m gonna have fun but since I’m breaking rule 1 – know the tools (I don’t know any possible tools) this is going to be intense.

Have fun everyone!

Oh my, Clojure… Well, yeah… Have fun with that :)

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME 4TH GEN CONSOLE DEVELOPMENT

IN 68000 ASSEMBLER FOR THE SUCCESSOR TO THE SEGA MASTER SYSTEM

WHY YES I THINK YOU ARE

cue awesome starfield

I’ll be using this lovely base code hacked together from a not-quite-a-game-yet.

To build, use: asmx -e -w -C68000 -b0 -o gm-baseld24.bin main.asm

I think I’ll have a build script at least by the end of this. Quite possibly a Makefile, too.

So anyhow, the usual crap:

  • Language: Sweet, sweet 68000 assembly. Would be even better if it weren’t backwards, and arranged primarily to make you shoot yourself in the foot. But 8 data + 8 address registers and a near orthographic instruction set is quite delicious OH YES
  • Compiler: None. Compilers are for pussies. We use an…
  • Engine: OF COURSE NOT, we use an…
  • Assembler: asmx – because there aren’t any good 68k assemblers yet >:( (just ask Charles MacDonald)
  • Graphics: GIMP. Duh. (It’s nicer than using text files with lines and lines of db / dc.b %00000000 statements)
  • Sound: DefleMask, mostly because it’s the only damn thing that works on Linux which does OPN2. It’s not too shabby actually… except for the fact that PgUp/PgDn do nothing >:( FIX IT DELEK
  • Text editor: Kate, which is KDE’s offering.
  • Emulator (considering I lack the real hardware): Mednafen. Probably going to test it in Kega Fusion some time as that’s probably more accurate, but Mednafen has Charles MacDonald’s Genesis Plus core… I think.

Considering that 100% of all Sega Master System games from LD22 ran on raptor85’s computer (read: there was exactly one), I think we’re onto a compatibility winner here.

P.S. By the way, here’s a working link for Autotracker-BU.

P.P.S. I am, of course, talking about the Sega Mega Drive. Just in case you didn’t notice.

Seeing you do this last game made me want to program for an archaic system as well. So thanks for introducing me to the “fun” of assembly. I picked up the Game Boy Advance, but my skills won’t be ready in time for LD24. I wish you the best of luck and can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Totally awesome! I tried to do the last one in Z80 assembler/Pac-Man hardware, but didn’t get very far. I think I’ll have to do the same thing again this year. One thing I learned from it though is that people can’t be bothered to download an emulator to try it. I would spend some time now to get a web-based emulator running for this platform. (even if it’s less accurate) You’ll get tons more views/plays if people can just click and run it in a browser. I am very anxiously looking forward to what you’re able to accomplish in the timeframe! 😀

Oh, another thing I forgot. Base code licence… stuff it. Public domain. That should do just fine.

Nice! I tried Atari 2600 in the last LD but that was the first time I programmed it so there was not enought time to do something decent. Now I’m doing demoscene stuff for it and a game for an upcoming party – for the real hardware ofcourse because if it isn’t running on a real hardware then it isn’t count in demoscene. I just love to program the 6507! It’s so simple and great fun! 😀

I have a question about the autotracker, well not really but kind of related :)
