Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

And the Theme is...

Everyone else: I hope I can make a fun farming sim.

Me: Time to harvest some organs!

It's not even a trick of a mind

Nope, the theme is objectively among the worst. At least for those who like to respect the theme. The others will go "Phew, made it, now I can make any sort of game I want as long as it involves resource collection."

Well, I guess major creative challenge lies ahead. Thinking outside of the box? More like thinking outside of a universe that wraps another universe but is actually at the center of it all, what a twist.

Let the brainstorming begin!

Our first one was the reaper? zombies? second one was a cute plant game xD so let's see what that will be^^

I Frankly Like the Theme

I was actually hoping to make something relaxed and cute. And now I get to play dozens of relaxed cute games as well! Win-win!

May your developement process be as chill as my cat's ))

I've got my concept !

Brainstorming didn't take that long this time ! I've got my theme, main mecanics and visual style locked and loaded !

LET THE GAME DEV BEGIN !!!

:alien: :cow2: 🛸

Harvest

Like, organs, right?

So far, that's where my brain is.

I was disappointed by the theme...

I was disappointed by the theme but after a bit of creative thinking I've come up with something that sounds fun. Don't be disheartened and feel free to stretch the theme a little, just get something made!

Some AI generated ideas to get you started

Harvest Time": In this farming simulator game, players must manage their time and resources to harvest crops, raise animals, and sell produce at the local market.

"Harvest Run": In this fast-paced action game, players must guide their character through a field filled with obstacles and enemies as they collect as many crops as possible before time runs out.

"Harvest Match": This puzzle game challenges players to match and collect various types of crops by swapping them on a grid. The goal is to create large groups of the same crop to earn points and advance to the next level.

"Harvest Heroes": In this role-playing game, players create and customize their own character and set out on a quest to save the world from a mysterious blight that is destroying crops. Along the way, they must recruit other characters, gather resources, and battle enemies to uncover the source of the blight and find a way to stop it.

"Harvest Tycoon": In this business simulation game, players must build and manage their own farm, including planting and harvesting crops, raising animals, and selling produce to customers. As they progress, they must make strategic decisions to expand their operation and compete against other farmers.

"Harvest Protectors": In this strategy game, players must defend their farm from hordes of hungry animals that are trying to steal their crops. They must build and upgrade a variety of defensive structures, such as fences and guard towers, to keep the animals at bay.

"Harvest Siege": In this tower defense game, players must defend their farm from waves of attacking enemies, such as bandits and raiders, who are trying to steal their crops and supplies. They must build and upgrade defensive structures, such as walls and traps, to hold back the enemy and keep their farm safe.

"Harvest Heroes: Defense Edition": This is a spin-off of the "Harvest Heroes" RPG idea I mentioned earlier, but with a focus on base defense. Players must recruit and train a team of heroes to defend their farm from waves of enemies that are trying to steal their crops. They must also gather resources, craft items, and upgrade their heroes' abilities to help them in battle.

"Harvest Apocalypse": In this survival game, players must defend their farm from a mysterious, crop-wilting plague that is spreading across the land. They must build and upgrade defensive structures, such as walls and traps, to hold back the advancing horde of infected enemies and keep their farm safe.

"Harvest Showdown": In this competitive multiplayer game, players must defend their own farm from attacks by other players while also trying to steal crops from their opponents' farms. They must build and upgrade defensive structures and train troops to defend their farm and attack their enemies. The player with the most surviving crops at the end of the match is declared the winner.

Ho noooooo, I've asked ChatGPT...

OMG I went astray, I sold my soul to the devil, I asked ChatGPT what game I could do with this theme! Untitled.png And one of the answers was brilliant!!!!!!!

What makes a Harvest a Harvest?

I was not as big a fan of harvest because it felt kind of limited. It's not as broad as gathering, which could incorporate concepts such as a hidden object game gathering all the items you need for a trip. Or a story game about gathering your friends together for a party. So what's the difference between harvesting and gathering? In the most general sense, I think harvesting is gathering items for consumption directly from the source. Picking apples at an orchard would be harvesting, but buying them from the grocery store would not because they've already been harvested. There might be some exceptions to this, but it's the best rule of thumb I could think of.

In that vein, some possible things to harvest beyond crops could be minerals, souls or magic energy. Much as Harvest is more limited than some other themes, I think there are still a lot of unique possibilities.

Good luck to everyone in the jam!

I'm in

I was really on the fence about this weekend, as its a little too soon since the last LD. Usually I would take the Monday off work and enjoy a long weekend programming, but that's not possible so soon after x-mas/new years.

However, as I spent the last week trying to make my own physics engine, I kinda need something to test it out on ... : D

As usual, the themes seems a little .. meh, but I'm going to give it a shot..

Let's do it!

I haven't done a Ludum Dare since COVID for Ludum Dare #48. I figure it's about time to hop back on the wagon and start developing some games! I have a few ideas for the harvest theme, but don't want to divulge them all just yet ;) I'm going to try to make it in time for the compo but as i'm a little rusty might have to enter it for the jam instead. As usual, i'm going completely solo which means I have to do the art, the music/audio, and the programming. It's quite an undertaking, but always pays off. I wish everyone good luck this year, see you in 3 days!

I'm In... I think

I'm a first time participant and wonder, if there's more to it, to join, than just create a game.

I'm in!

It has been 4 years since my last ludum dare, feeling really pumped up about this one!
