Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Let's try this again

Last time I had poorly timed a LASIK surgery, didn't finish.

This time, I am doing EXTRA right out of the gate. With only 1-2 hours a day to work on this and a toddler running around, there is no way I can do Compo or Jam.

I have some non-farming ideas which I am still deciding about. I am also indecisive about tools. I recently got into using Crystal, and quite enjoying the programming language, but the tools are still not quite there. There is a SFML binding, and a Raylib binding, and an ECS tool, but other than that, I don't have many options. Might just use Unity or Ebiten this time around and do Crystal stuff next time.

My tentative setup: * Engine: Unity or Ebiten or CrSFML or Raylib-cr * Art: Asperite + Stable Diffusion/AI * Sound: BeepBox/SFXR/LMMS

Rogue Farmer

I've had the idea of crossing a roguelike with a farm sim for a while now. When I saw the theme, I knew it was time to finally make it. RogueFarmerTitle.gif

This time I can only make a really tiny game

I don't have much time nor energy for this Ludum Dare, so I'm gonna try to keep my game reeeally simple! :deciduous_tree: As always I'll be using Godot

Maybe I'm in

I don't know, I've harvested nine years since the last time I jammed, I might be a little rusty

Once more unto the breach

I start from scratch again.

This time I aim to finish in 24 hours, God willing.

Let's do it !

I finally had an idea. Will start it after some sleep. :-)

I'm in (Late)

Hi, you guys. I'm new to Ludum Dare. This will be my first JAM with you all. I honestly am not prepared as I just found out this JAM was happening a day or two ago. I just decided to give it a shot. Wish me luck!

My idea, quick mockup before sleepytime

Mockup.jpg

In this game, you walk around a planet growing and harvesting tetris pieces. At the north side of the planet there is a big pit you can throw them in. Your goal is to complete the tetris to collect points (the lore would call this, "OIL"). The bigger the pieces you throw in, the better quality your "OIL" will become, but the harder it gets.

ChatGPT Has Changed Creativity

My Prompt (after some previous prompts around themeing and goals and such):

Can you design 5 weapons with unique uses in this theme too?

It responded with:

``` Sure! Here are five potential weapons with unique uses that you could use in your dungeon crawler game:
"Venomous Dagger": This weapon is coated in a deadly poison that damages enemies over time.
"Frostbite Mace": This weapon is imbued with icy magic, causing it to freeze enemies on contact.
"Thunderous Spear": This weapon is infused with the power of lightning, causing it to shock enemies on impact.
"Blazing Sword": This weapon is imbued with fiery magic, causing it to set enemies ablaze on contact.
"Ethereal Bow": This weapon fires arrows made of pure energy, which pass through enemies and can damage multiple foes with a single shot. ```
... astonishing ...
game idea
okay so i will create a game about me harvesting wheat at my farm what do you think
Whiteboard
posting our team's whiteboard in case someone finds it helpful
We already settled on an idea (its not here), its nothing special but it should be small enough that we can finish on time hahaUntitled Diagram.jpg
Making some progress...
GIF showing a player mousing over cards GIF compression is not the nicest to text, of course, but I think you can tell what I am going for here. :wink:
(How, exactly, am I going to make a harvest related card game? Good question...)
I'm sorry but this theme is jarring
I hate to join the endless stream of hate this theme seems to be getting but I will anyways:
It makes me feel like when your mum asks you to do the washing when you were already just about to. I would happily make a game about farming or organ/soul harvesting and those have genuinely been ideas we had for previous Jam's themes. But having this theme just makes me not want to do those, it's somehow so limiting yet doesn't act as a good anchor point for inspiration.
Anyways I had to get this rant out, we did a decent amount of brainstorming but no finalised idea yet unfortunately, hopefully tomorrow will bring some new found enthusiasm. Good luck everyone!
I am in
Not many ideas with this theme so I will probably have some fun programming a boring 3D "working simulator" where you harvest a field with a sickle.
Probably i will add some written fact, poetry, or reflection on the side to make the game at least somewhat interesting.
Real time day night cycle? Maybe a reality mode where you can harvest the field only in real life June (or appropriate season for your latitude)
Yea... definitely non a fun game, but there is a little room for me to go back to my experimental side
:scream:
Wait, what?!
So like... apparently there's a Ludum Dare that's not in April or October? I didn't know, and I have plans for much of this Saturday. Oh dear. I'd say I am in, and I want to be--this would be my 17th consecutive Ludum Dare, I don't want to break my streak--but I'm not sure I have the time.
So I guess I will try, probably whipping up a small text game in Twine again, but there's a definite chance I will fail or end up with something woefully incomplete.
The theme has spawned some ideas, at least.
Quick lil' wallpaper
Tradition dictates, yadda yadda... There's a 4K and a HD variant.
:link: Here's a Zip file that contains both versions
In conclusion...
I'm just gonna go to bed and see if there's a game two days from now. Wish me luck!
