LD23 April 20–23, 2012

Warmup Done: ‘Lumberjack Jack’ Released

I feel pretty warmed up 😀  Check out Lumberjack Jack if you’re interested.

Just gonna try this out

Hello, first time for me participating in Ludum Dare.

I’m just gonna do this because I want to make something small and I’ve never participated in such a competition.

I’m gonna use Sublime Text 2 as editor, Lua as language, and LOVE as framework. Used all of these before, but for the art I’m gonna try out Pyxeledit because it looks very nice to me. Sound will be something difficult for me, might not gonna implement that. (Or is that required..? Hope not)

I’m definitely in!

#LD22 was my first time in Ludumdare. The experience was so great that I’m definitely in for #LD23. I’ll be using Flashpunk (as I did in #LD22), but this time I’m going to dedicate more time to art and music, since last time this was pretty much lacking in my game. I’m very excited for next weekend! See you there :)

I am sad

I’m unable to attend this months Ludum Dare due to having to worry about a thesis and recently getting a job. :(

The timing wouldnt have been worse for my thesis and job to get in the way of my attendance to the 10th year anniversary of Ludum Dare

Perhaps I’ll be able to attend the next.

Or Maybe, If id try VERY hard to get my thesis done this comming week :O i possibly could make it

Dude, concentrate on your thesis. There are lots of LDs to come,… All about setting right priorities, right?

I am in!

LD22 was my first attempt and I actually finished a game!  Was it a fun game?  That is up for debate but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  My goal for LD23 is to increase the fun level and increase my standing in the scoring.  I landed square in the middle of the pack  for  LD22.

Mantra: Keep it simple!  Focus on fun!

Time to gear up

Hello everybody. This is my first LD, and I’m looking forward to it.

I’ll be using C++ for this one, along with:

> SFML 1.6

> OpenGL (I use it’s textures to store sprites for various reasons)

> OpenAL (Sound backend)

> Switching from my wrapper to plain GME: http://www.slack.net/~ant/libs/audio.html

And that’s probably everything. Now I’m just waiting like everybody else.

Glest modding community are jamming!

Back in the January mini #31 we tried top prove that platform games don’t need to be made from 2D block tiles!

(Anyone wanting an OpenGLES 2 and file IO wrapper that compiles for Windows, Linux, Mac and runs natively in the in Chrome browser can feel free to use the scaffolding we made for mini #31 – barebones)

This time around we have an overall game concept that is entirely different, perhaps unique, and we’re super excited imagining how we might bend it to suit whatever the LD 23 theme will be!

We might try to make the game play two different ways – sort of almost two games in one.

Ludum Dare#23 Warmup

I’m working on a little platform game (or only menu, I have to see) for the warmup session. I have some problems with the collision matrix, I have to get rid of this in some hours.
By the way, I wil lenter the official Ludum Dare #23 in Jam, i will work with a friend of mine. He works with graphics so it should be cool to watch (I don’t know to play :D)

A little screenshot for the warmup session, graphic made by me!

First post from a first comp-er

Well here goes.

I first heard about Ludum Dare during the previous competition, LD #22. I thought it sounded like a great idea, and enjoyed watching a number of live streams over the weekend. Immediately, I decided that I was going to enter LD #23, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that it fell during a two-week break from university. But alas, a number of things have since transpired to ensure that my first Ludum Dare would be less than ideal, including:

  1. A large number of assignments which need to be completed over the break. One for each of my four courses, in fact. If I can’t get these finished in time, then there will be no entry from me this year. I really don’t want this to happen.
  2. The second round of the ANZAC League, the preliminary competition acting as qualifiers for the International Collegiate Programming Competition, is scheduled for Saturday, 20th of April. Including transport, this will take approximately the first seven hours out of Ludum Dare. Not only that, but the competition is mentally exhausting.
  3. Turns out the competition is on the last weekend of the uni break, and because of the time difference here in New Zealand, it doesn’t end till 1pm on the Monday. Unfortunately this means submitting my entry on Sunday night.

Combined with work commitments, my sleeping schedule, food intake requirements and A-League Grand Final watching, I’ll have a total of about… 15 hours to work on my entry. Regardless, I am determined to submit an entry for this competition. Due to my very limited time constraints, and the fact that it is my first attempt at the competition, my entry is probably going to be poor at best.

A few details about my entry:

  • I’ll be coding in Java – it’s my language of choice, and it’s nice and portable, so anyone which the JRE installed (that should be just about everyone these days!) will be able to play it.
  • I’m not an artist, so I’ll probably be knocking up some pretty “abstract” graphics in Paint and making them look a bit flashier in GIMP.
  • I’ll be using community-favourite sfxr for sound effects, and if I have time, I’ll be using FL Studio to make some music (and JLayer for Java mp3 support).
  • I’ll be making a timelapse using Chronolapse. They’re fantastic, I love watching them!
  • Unfortunately, because internet connections in New Zealand are poor (and my 20GB/month data cap – I know!) I won’t be live-streaming. I will be writing the occasional blog post here, however.

After the competition ends, I’ll be cross-posting all the blog posts and the final game on my personal website (which I won’t plug here – it’s pretty bare at the moment!) for archival purposes.

Bring on next weekend!

I’m in!

After my (scandalously awful) LD#21 entry (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-21/?action=preview&uid=1561) and my (controversially awesome) LD#22 entry (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22/?action=preview&uid=1561), I’m in for LD#23

Please note that I promised a “Gameplay to the max” entry this time round (in this post http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2011/12/19/you-want-a-post-mortem-i-got-a-post-mortem-for-ya/), so keep your eyes peeled, and hold me to my promise.

My dad asked me to make sure that the atmosphere would still be there, so I hereby promise that I will not sacrifice atmosphere for gameplay.

So wish me luck, and a good luck to everybody else getting ready for this (hopefully epic) 10 year anniversary LD#23 extraordinaire!

Second Ludum Dare, Go!

Wow, next week already? Awesome.

To be quite honest, I mostly slacked since my last LD :-( I had these huge plans, see: improve my game, write a text window library, create a small “evolutionary garden”. And all of that got lost in the shuffle :-( That is what happens when you don’t have deadlines.

<3 LD48

Well, so for this LD I will try to get right what I got wrong last time. I will use Slick2D again, but now I won't have to learn the library from zero :-). I have written a small todo list, and tomorrow I will go through it for the warm-up, to make sure that all is working kinda all right for the dare.

Also, I am in a new apartment, and with a much improved setup if compared to last time:

My work setup for LD23

The down side is that now I’m on the GMT+9 timezone, which means the LD will start 10AM on saturday, and end on 10AM on sunday – so I won’t get much in term of last time additions… but at least I will begin with full speed on the first day.

Also, on LD22 I managed to get 10th place community due to my reviews. So I got a reputation to uphold!!! :-) It will be quite a bit harder this time, since now I got a full time job, so I won’t be able to dedicate entire days for reviewing, but I will see what I can do.

GL HF everyone!

I’m in!

Hi,

i’m french student enjoying indie game development. Until now, i wrote games for myself and never in a competition context. So, this is my first ludumdare and i hope i will not do too bad and be able to bring a fun entry. The ludumdare week-end is the exact week-end of the presidential elections in France. I have already done all the needed paperwork to let someone else vote for you and so i’m ready to spend my whole week-end doing this awesome competition!

Big thanks to the indie community and see you this week-end!

My first post…

Well this is may first post ever….

not much to say about that…

LOL

Im in!

I am definitely in for this one!

I will most likely be using LOVE2D or Stencyl, I haven’t really decided yet.

The graphics will be made in Photoshop, sounds in BFXR and music probably garage band or maybe LSDJ depends on what style it is.

LD23 Warmup Game – MayorVille

Hi Everyone,

I just finished my warmup game for LD23, and it’s called MayorVille. It’s a fairly basic town sim, where you have to balance unemployment, population growth and funds.

Check it out here.

Time For Warmup

Alright, I think it’s time I quit procrastinating by slaughtering themes and begin my warming up. I plan to spend some of today and tomorrow working on it, and then, seeing how I do, work on the areas my skills need improvement in until the event. I seriously have no idea if I’m ready for this, but we’ll see, I suppose. I’ve also decided to scrap Aseprite from my toolbox and replace it with PyxelEdit, due to the recent discovery that it is the most awesome pixel art editor I have seen in my life. We’ll see how it goes.

I’ll be using The Jahn’s game idea generator right now as I write this to decide my little warmup theme. Alright, here it goes. My warmup will be based around… *drumroll*

MUSICAL BEAT ‘EM UP GAME WITH A PSYCHEDELIC THEME

Uhm… I’ll count that as a trial run. The real one is:

15 MINUTE BEAT ‘EM UP GAME WITH A CYBERSPACE THEME

Much better. I’ll try and update my progress.

I’m In.

I’m in for Ludum Dare 23.

Last time round I had to move out of my house at Uni halfway through, and didn’t complete a game, this time, however, I should have plenty of time. I did pretty well the time before that with unrest, but I’m hoping to produce something more game-y this time.

I’m going to try using pyglet instead of SFML this time, as it’s a more mature library. It means I’ll be stuck with Python 2.x instead of 3.x, but I’ll live. Taking a look at the documentation, it looks really well designed, and very Pythonic, which is always a good thing.

My setup remains pretty much the same as last time, so I’ll shamelessly post the old picture:

My setup.

My setup - this is actually an old picture from last time, but it hasn't changed, so I figure it's fine.

As usual, I’ll provide something for Linux and Windows. It should also work on OS X, but I don’t have a Mac to build a version on, so anyone adventurous can give it a shot. Pyglet and Python will be my only dependencies, so it shouldn’t be hard.

I’m in! First game competiton :O

So I’m new to Ludum Dare. The twist? This will be my first game >:). I’ve just been working on the framework for games in general. I’m really excited for this compo though, I think I can handle it and it’ll be lots of fun! :)
