LD23 April 20–23, 2012

Debating about my “in” status.

The current college semester decided to throw a curveball at me at the just the right moment so I’m not exactly certain what this will do with my participation status.

Past experiences convince me that it will do absolutely nothing and I’ll still attempt to cobble together a silly game in 48 hours. It will be great fun! I doubt I’ll be doing warmup though, need to keep my coding motivation high. I’ve been hacking away at some of my smaller projects in the meantime, though.

And, hopefully this time around, people will take note of the fact that I mentioned that I’m kind of in a 48 hour game jam and not schedule critical events (not critical enough that they have to be done on said weekend, though) for the upcoming weekend. :/

And, also hopefully this time around, I won’t fall into a sudden TF2 addiction. heh

EDIT: since people enjoy talking about their tools, I’ll talk a bit about mine. Uh… I don’t know what tools I’m going to use yet! I’m barely resisting my urge to use the Descent graphics libraries (ported to modern operating systems via the DXX-Rebirth project in software mode) which are unfamiliar to me as a gimmick, because gimmicky side projects are what I thrive on. That’s pretty much an instant failure for me though, so I’m probably just going to stick to what I know (which means Java with LWJGL or C# with OpenTK). I should honestly look into some of the more popular game creation libraries for these languages, though. Unity sounds really nice. I’m kind of in a crunch right now about what my favorite graphic making software is, so I’ll probably ignore my debates entirely and pull out Paint.net again and make some silly graphics (actually in the four months I’ve improved a bit with my art). The sounds will be made via whatever sound generator happens to be popular at the time.

Web technologies are an unfamiliar territory for me, and I kind of want to fix that. It seems like the most accessible games are the one where you can click a url and you’re playing instantly, rather than having to dump an archive somewhere and run an executable, especially when other libraries are needed to make said executable run. (Then again most web environments need a plugin also from what I’ve seen).

For the game itself, I honestly want to try something 3D for a change, with procedurally generated levels based on basic models (probably made in Radiant or another quake map editor, for convenience), but collision and physics in 3d space is a mystery to me, so unless I can find a good library to simplify these things, it isn’t happening. Meh.

In

I’ll be using openframeworks w/ various addons + da GIMP

My (Our) first Ludum Dare

We (Myself and Nick Burris) Will be entering the Ludum Dare Jam. Probably using Python with the Pygame library. Might be using a library called mp3play for python. (I know this is a horrible thing to do, but it’s all we know well enough right now) Also using:

  • Paint.net
  • PyxelEdit (Maybe, looks awesome!)

Warmup update

Hallo,

it’s 5:05am here, I had a stupid problems with loading sounds in the game but now it’s fixed! YAY

A lot of code is ready for the JAM.

  • Map generator from easy editable image
  • Tiles moving for characters
  • Moving
  • button EXIT working

But I have to rebuild from scratch the collision system, I have make so many mistakes that is better start from zero.

I have prepared a “tech demo”. Music, character moving, basic gravity, basic map, special “collision” should work.

PS: Please, I need to know if you can run this test. If you have some problems please report it to me 😀

Yeah, not a lot but I hope to have a “game” ready for tomorrow.

My First LD!

I will be joining the Ludum Dare Jam! I’ve been working on learning 2D effects and ideas for this event, and feel very confident in my ability. I’m also lucky that the competition falls squarely in the middle of my Spring-Vacation :D.

I will be using Java with the standard library (No additions!). My graphics/drawing system will be Paint.Net (Not that bad, really!). I’m planning a 2D, Top-Down game/view. I’m not going to give too many details, but the idea is rather well thought out, I like to think.

I wish myself and all other members good luck and to have plenty of fun :D!

New challenger approaches!

I’m in! Have been following LudumDare livestreams, but this is the first time I’m actually going to partipicate. My weaknesses are lack of deadlines and laziness, so this could work out well. Also, I think I can promise moderately fun gameplay, at the cost of a bit less fun graphics. I’ll be using graphicsgale for visuals, but I’m not sure about code yet. See you in the competition! (Also, please let the theme be random generation!)

Count us in!

We’re Cake & Code and this is going to be our first Ludum Dare jam. (Our = Zeik the programmer and Cake the artist) We’re currently working on a warmup game right now called Rainy Birthday and hopefully we can get some part of it done by Sunday/Monday. Our biggest obstacle right now for WW and LD later this week is finding a way to craft music into our games. (Neither of us are skilled musicians unfortunately.) Things will work out somehow……or so we’d like to hope.

Zeik will be using….

Flash CS5/AS3

Notepad++ (aww yiss, we fancy)

and Cake will rampage with….

Photoshop CS5

Illustrator CS5

Coffee + paper + brain

tag teaming with…

Audacity/SFXR/something that creates some sort of melodic tunes

I think you have to do everything by yourself, no teams…

As Tella said, be aware that the Compo is a 1-person event ONLY. If you still want to work as a team, you should enter the Jam.

We just didn’t want you to leave dissapointed, I never ment to be seemingly unfriendly!

My first LD48

Hi, this is my first LD and I’m not quite sure if I understand the rules. First off, do we need to film ourselves doing it? And second, can we use game engines (e.g. Unity3D)?

Tnx

Nope and yes.

I read they should be public. The point is you should start with (mostly) a blank canvas, or at least, the canvas you’re using should be available to all other contestants as well. This way, we all start with similar beginnings, which makes for a fair comparison.

Preparing for Ludum Dare

Hi everybody!!!! I’m making preparations to my 2nd Ludum Dare.

The first one is code. After finishing my first entry, for LD22, I started to write an engine, so yesterday I created a github account and uploaded that engine.

You can find it by the name of Antagonista! https://github.com/Atridas/Antagonista

I expect to familiarize myself with the use of git, as I never used it before (I was a mercurial user, for now I still believe it is “simpler”, but I just want to get used to git). I had a complex structure of branches and tags in hg, now triing to replicate it on git, wathever, as soon as I can, I will update the master branch with info avout how it all works.

PokeQuest

I finished my little warmup game!

As you can see, the graphics are from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon but everything else is made by me :-)

You can play it here.

Bee’s Knees Bees

Here’s my warm up entry Bee’s Knees Bees! Was quite fun to make and is weird to play. :) Help the bees collect nectar and make honey, watch out for the bear!

Play now: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23-warmup/?uid=608

Good luck and see you next weekend! 😀

Btw, my best is 873 honey. Can you beat that? 😉

I’m in.

First Ludum Dare for me, looking forward to it.

I’ll probably do a simple 2d game written in C++ with awesome programmer art done in Paint.NET  :-)

I’m in too

I’m in for the first time in LD48 now. I missed the warmup… thats bad… but I acctually already prepared for LD. I’ll join with standard Java lib and GIMP under archlinux. Target: Beat notch in one category, if he joins the competition too.

The submission is still open. Why not make a little game in some hours? Even if the submission for warmup games would not be open, there is no reason to do not a little game before next weekend :)

Beating notch is a nice goal, good luck with that 😉 Try some music, so you can beat him with that 😀

We’re in!

Were in for the third time and we’ll be using:

  • Gamemaker 8.1 to code
  • GIMP/Photoshop for the graphics
  • Sfxr for sound effects (maybe)

I am in (hopefully)!

This is my first Ludum Dare! I am pretty sure I will be able to participate and it should be fun. I have been watching Ludum Dares for the past 3 and I think it is time to do one.

Here is what I should be using:

Sounds: SFXR or BFXR

Scripting/Engine: Unity3D or Stencyl (depending on how much time I have)

Graphics: GIMP

Music: Aviary

See you all there! Can’t wait to play the games!

Warmup

For my warmup i decide to create a remake of my first game.
My first game was made 6 years ago with macromedia flash 8.
This time, i used FlashDevelop, Flixel, DAME for tilemaps and Bfxr for sounds.

I don’t know how many hours I spend on this game because I made it little by little and I wasn’t familiar with the tools.
But now I think I’m ready for the real LD.

I’m in

Fairly sure no-one has ever been disqualified for failing to post an ‘I’m in’ LD post, but WHY RISK BEING THE FIRST?

Not committing to any particular tools until I see the theme, but I’d suspect Unity is in with a strong chance.
