LD22

Indication of intent

I have decided that I’m in this time! Those you don’t mind the competition, wish me luck! Those who don’t, I love you anyway!

I’ll be getting a later start since being GMT+2 (sunny ZA, wooo!) places me into the 4am zone when LD48 22 starts.

My toolchain will include:

  1. Unity 3D 3.4 Pro – with my custom boilerplate code library
  2. My own pimped out version of Blender 2.6x
  3. Gimp 2.7.4
  4. TextureMaker 3.1
  5. bfxr
  6. Audacity 1.3.13
  7. Camtasia (for the obligatory time-lapse video, possibly with my lively mush on the side showing my concentrated face.)
  8. My HTC Desire for all my photo, video and sound recording needs
  9. My twitter account to tell everyone what I’m doing: @wahooney
  10. I can’t think of a 10th item, but I added one for the sake of symmetry
Happy Daring, everyone.

LD48 #22 – Abandoned Planet

I’m pretty certain that I’ve bitten off more than I can chew for my first LD project, but I’m glad to see how much progress I’ve made in about 35 hours of actual work.

Abandoned Planet

At the home base

My game can be found here: http://www.wahooney.net/ludum-dare-22-abandoned-planet/

I will be working on the game until the cutoff, but it is pretty playable as is.

Enjoy!

Ludum Dare 53

The Ten Commandments of Ludum Dare

Thou shalt not work on thy game before the Ludum Dare begins.

Thou shalt use the theme as thy inspiration.

Thou shalt not use pre-existing game assets, unless they be among the few exceptions.

Remember to submit thy game by the deadline.

Honor thy fellow jammers and their creations.

Thou shalt not cheat nor plagiarize.

Thou shalt give credit where credit is due.

Thou shalt not make offensive or discriminatory content.

Thou shalt test thy game for bugs and glitches.

Thou shalt have fun, for that is the ultimate goal of the Ludum Dare.

Proposal: Helper tools for future projects

Many projects often lack an options screen, which is understandable given the amount of work required for something that isn't part of the game itself. However, options screens are crucial for setting graphics quality, audio volumes, and other settings.

I propose a community-driven project to create open-source settings screens for future LDs (or any project). This system would handle screen setup, navigation from the main menu, and potentially even include a basic main menu. Each option on the screen could be an Unreal blueprint widget, a Unity prefab, or a similar component for GameMaker and Godot. Ideally, these widgets should be easy to customize, allowing for version updates while retaining customizations.

I'm willing to contribute by developing a plugin for Unreal to manage basic options. The project can be hosted on GITHub under a permissive license like MIT, making future projects more playable without burdening participants. This idea should comply with Compo rules, as it doesn't involve plug-and-play gameplay and is an open-source endeavor.

I plan to work on this during my spare time for my future LD projects either way and will share my efforts with everyone.

Any thoughts or feedback?

Event proposal: Pludum Dare!

I've been testing a lot of games and have had fun with most, but there are some that I would actually like to recreate with my own perspective. The second hardest part of making a game for LD is the idea, the hardest part is executing as much of that idea in the time allotted.

A (semi-)official event where we are given free rein to "plagarize" (hence the name) each other's game ideas could actually be fun, with all due credit to the originators of course.

Anyone else keen to give that a try?
