LD26

We’re in too!

Me and one of my friends are going to Jam, unfortunately we’ll miss the first 5-6 hours because of school(we’re from Hungary).

I’ll be programming(java w/ eclipse) and doing music and effects(w/ sfxr and lmms) and my friends gonna’ draw the textures ! 😀

5 hours of work, this is how i am yet

Jam, but my buddy isn’t available today, only tomorrow, so I had to make art myself 😀
Will have minimalistic art.

An rpg game, map made so far 😀

Working w/ JAVA(using Eclipse) and Paint.net

Pretty good progress yet

screen_1367061782.49

Having some pretty good progress with Simple RPG, where your quest is to find your peace of mind.

My goals are to have VERY basic and minimal graphics, but normal rpg gameplay, not simple, but NOT complex

Got some nifty dialogs!

Dialogs in my game
I FINALLY have got some game kinda thing, with pickups, enemies, dialogs, menu, a character, “minimalistic(will be more minimalistic)” design and game mechanics working!
Gotta wait for graphics guy so I can make more progress…I can’t draw.

LD27

Yeah!

Woke up at 2 am… I miscounted the time, woke up 1 hour earlier…
Had 2 coffees, listened to some music and started working when the theme was announced.
My idea is to create a top-down view game with a story like Trine:
Basic concept is that you have this hero(who doesn’t have a name yet) and there are 2 people living inside him and every ten seconds they change.
There is a warrior who is strong but slow and a magician who can cast spells and is fast.
I am using JAVA(Eclipse IDE) with OpenGL(LWJGL) and OpenAL for sounds.
Using my own engine built from scratch, and I’m already done with a LOT of things:
Got a proper map editor working with tilemap collision detections and some render code.
Here’s a screenshot:
javaw 2013-08-24 06-23-38-78
Also this is how I load the maps using different color channels:
testMap

Have a nice day and good luck :)

And day 1 didn’t even end yet!

Got a LOT of progress on my game, working tile collision, mobs, weapons, particle systems.
I finished the map loader, now i only need new blocks.
Here is the hub, this is where you start, you go to missions from here:

Let’s go to sleep!

So it’s 0:40 here, and I have been up for the last 24 hours, I am probably sleeping till’ 6 or so so that I can continue work.
What is done so far:
-Render engine(OpenGL)
-Sound engine(OpenAL)
-Weapons that shoot projectiles
-Optimized map tile based collision and rendering
-Entities
-Basic mob
-Game HUB Map
-MapLoader
-lot of other things i forgot about

What is going to be done probably tomorrow:
-Lighting(if needed, I got a pretty nice algorythm for that)
-Maps and missions
-More tiles
-Detailed Story
-Moar stuff

What I can tell about the story so far:
It is a kind of “we are not alone” story placed in the distant future, when the aliens attack the earth, but two misterious men save the human empire, but the aliens are not happy, so they catch these two men and get their souls, then put the two souls into one body. This is their penalty. But the aliens made something bad, causing the souls change the “active soul” every 10 seconds.

Now I go to sleep, bye and keep on working! :)

We’re in!

So this is going to be our 3rd Ludum Dare, our best was 700/2300 in overall, we want to make it into 300 this time!
Me (jancsiba5, programmer) and my fella (graphics designer) are ColonierGames, and we’ve been preparing for LD the whole week! I wrote a little engine, so that I can start to code game right away! You can download it here. It is a 2D engine for top down view games OR platformers, featuring collision detection, per vertex lighting, Texture and Sound handling and some more stuff.
So the tools are the following:
For me: Eclipse(for JAVA), LWJGL, Slick, CEngine, Fruity Loops(for music), Audacity, sfxr
For graphics: Pickle, Paint.NET, Photoshop CS6(maybe? i dunno)
Hope all of you will have fun and make great games!
Good Luck!

MiniLD 50 progress

So I was bored this afternoon, and I read about MiniLD 50 a few days ago, so I decided “Why should I not participate?”. So I started coding and stuff, things came after things, and got a pretty cool idea and some pretty good code. I decided to create a Call of Duty game with the name of “COD 9000”. It is supposed to be a parody of the game, with VERY simple 3d graphics. I took a look into LWJGL’s 3D (for like the third time in my life) and started coding the game. I made a pretty unbelievable performance, I am finished with most engine things in like 4 hours(!!!). That includes lighting, models, collision detection, shaders, stuff like that. Now I’ll be headed to writing a story, than modelling.
Here are some pictures of my performance, although the map you’re seeing is just a test model, it is nothing like COD yet :( :)

LD29

We’re in!

This will be our forth Ludum Dare together with the artist, but this LD is going to be kind of special, because the whole ColonierGames development team will work.
First of all, we have our 3d artist, who used to do 2d art, but it turned out he can’t draw, so he’s going to make models. Then, there’s our texturer, who’s going to do some pixel art. Lastly there’ll be me and the other programmer(the web developer), we are going to make the programming parts, and we’re doing a fancy webpage for the submission.
My tools and languages(programmer, i don’t know what artists use):

Language: JAVA
IDE: Eclipse (newest version i guess)
Libraries: LWJGL and my own engine kind-of code I’ll be uploading next week
For music: Fl Studio OR Audacity if I do some recorded music
For some graphics art I do like wallpapers: Photoshop CS5

Language: PHP/HTML
IDE: Notepad++
Libraries: JQuery i guess
For graphics and art on website: Photoshop CS5

I’d like to wish good luck for everyone participating in LD 29!

Last thing, here’s a wallpaper I made for the dev team.

Sooo I’ve got this… But it’s not a game :/

Yo all, I’ve been working since the start of compo, and I’ve finally got something appealing. It’s looks very neat and all, but I’ve absolutely no idea what game I should create with it :( Can you tell me your opinion and ideas? Thanks :)java 2015-12-13 16-03-21-09

You can make it a clicking game, have not seen any around and I promise you I’ve looked att almost every LD34 upload. The tree will grow a littlebit for every click. Do it sound like an idea? 😀 would love to play it

One button grows a branch to the right. One button grows a branch to the left. (at a specified height on the screen)

The branches should be collecting something. Maybe little stars on the sides? The game constantly scrolls upward and the player tries to catch them.

Finally got an idea!

Yo guys, I posted a few hours ago about me not having an idea for my game. Now I have. LOOK AT THE DESTRUCTIONup

LD34 Postmortem

Hello everyone! This is my postmortem of the 34th Ludum Dare. I didn’t write the name of the game in the title, because it’s too long :)

So I was ready to create a game last weekend, and complete my 7th or 8th Ludum Dare (I can’t quite remember). I did have some appointments during the days, but thought that I could join and compete anyway. I wasn’t wrong, but wasn’t completely right either. I had my high school prom on Saturday, and I knew I was going to skip 8 or so hours from development, so I woke up early (because LD starts at 3 am in Hungary) to see the theme and start programming. I joined the IRC, waited for the theme announcement, and when I saw what the theme(s) was(were), I was quite happy, because I thought it was a good theme to work with. But I just couldn’t figure out a concept in like 5 hours, and I had to leave my computer because of the preparations of the prom. I was in town, when I finally got my idea, so after I went home, I worked straight for about 5 hours until I had to leave again. I had a great time at Saturday night, but I had to go to sleep, because I was awake for about 22 hours. When I started working on Sunday, everything was kind of in place in my head. I thought I might even finish for the Compo instead of the Jam. My game concept was that there’s a constantly growing tree, and you have to climb it. I didn’t quite have the concept for what you exactly have to do on the tree, I was thinking about something, but in the end it turned out to be something completely different. I spent the whole Sunday to do the tree generating and lighting for the game, tweaking it to almost perfection. Then I realized I can’t finish for the compo, so I went to sleep and started working on Monday again. When I started working, I figured out that I can’t do anything with climbing the tree, but I didn’t want to start a new game, because the tree was so beautiful :) . So I started experimenting with some destruction, because I was kind of bored. And then it occured to me: The branches’ fall looked so good, I new I had to make a tree chopping game. So I did it. I removed the climbing part, making it so the player only climbs the trunk, made a cutting animation, fixed some bugs that occured when you cut a branch, added explosions, some sense to gameplay, powerup, music, sound, some artwork and I was done. I finished 4 hours before deadline.

What went good:

  • I had a simple idea I knew I could do in 3 days
  • Making the music was very fluent, I finished in an hour with it
  • The tree looked just like I imagined it
  • libGDX behaved very nicely compared to my LDs before

What went wrong:

  • Time: Don’t do an LD if you have a prom at the weekend, two music contributions and a highway code test next week, because you’ll be tired AF during the whole week
  • My new computer I worked on didn’t have Photoshop and FL Studio installed, so I had to work with PDN and LMMS
  • Couldn’t figure out why, but I was not able to import my code into a new GDX project that had android and HTML5 support

In the end, I learned some lessons during the weekend, had a lot of fun, and last, but not least I finished a game! Check it out, leave a vote and a comment, and I’ll check out and vote for your game too :)
