First time!

I have heard of Ludum Dare, but never participated. This will be my first time. I will work on my own, with experience at Unity/C#/Blender ✌️

Too creative

Eventhoug I spend way too long on the design of the cards, (not an artist) I like it. Card game and FPS, btw.

Naamloos.png

Hearthstone was the inspiration, so a lot of the design was taken from there. Red blood drop diamond, displays they enemy's health Blue diamond, displays enemy's strength, or the weapon's attack damage.

Movement, picking up cards, attacking works fine.

To do: AI, UI, Terrain, Menu

Wish me luck for the next days, currently 4:30 am, time for sleepzzz

Day 2

Eventhough my normal life still goes on, I've managed to do some stuff again.

Naamloos2.png

Some fast art, fast AI, projectiles, functionality and UI work has been done today and it has been fun.

The UI consists out of the mana/diamonds in the top-left corner. Every tool card has a stone on it as well, it represents the amount of damage it deals, but also the mana needed to play the card. (playing a card is like a the gun) The cards on the buttom-left is your deck. Select the card you want to use and it will display on the card on your buttom-right. Left-clicking plays the card (use the feature, like shoot arrow) and right-clicking raises the card, so you can read what's on it.

Tomorrow will be mainly about AI and some terrain stuff. When that all is done, I can do the last features (main menu etc.) and work some of the bugs out. Wish me luck

Finished!

Eventhough I mostly worked from 7pm till 4am, I am glad the jam is over, so I can catch some sleep. ZZZzz

The game is finished! It does not contain the amount of sounds or a settings menu, but it is still something. Ofcourse everyone wants the game to be 110% complete, but in reality, a game jam game only contains 60% at most! Next time I need to schedule sounds, because it feels pretty dull with only 3 sound :P I only googled the 2d art, inside the card, nothing else. All of the art besides those is mine. As a programmer I am pretty happy with that :D

Hope to see you all next time! Here is some of my information if people want it!

Cool Responses

It is always great to show a game you have been working on and getting nice responses. When I showed the game to my friends, they giggled and liked the idea. Big cards chasing you and trying to headbutt you, so weird, so great. I got the feedback "Sound would make it better, it's a nice way to obtain feedback from your actions" from a lot of people. Good thing to keep in mind for the next Jam.

Please have a look at the game, play it and rate it. Feedback is always appreciated! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/everything-is-cards

Experimenting

update_1.png

Hello Everyone! Time for another Ludum Dare!

As soon as I read what the theme what, an idea popped in my mind. The idea is very small: You find a cube, you need to keep it alive. If his live depletes, you lose! When his live is restored, you win! Very simple to program.

For this jam, I wanted to focus more on art and experiment with Unity's HDRP. I tried for a day and have to say, I am really proud of the results. My nature is programming, so fancy shaders and post processing effects are kind of new to me. For the next day, I will focus on procedural clutter, like grass, bushes, rocks and stuff. The basic theme logic will also be implemented. Hold something with a depleting progress bar. with win and lose states. Then I can focus on sounds for the last day.

Here are some screenshots of what the game currently looks like. No theme gameplay has been implemented.

I hope you can provide with some feedback, that would be cool

Refining

update_3.png

Another day has part!

Today was a little more laid back. Spending some time away from screens was great. This meant that not all of the milestones have be reached. I wanted to add the logic for the theme: keep the cube alive, but that failed. I did finish the procedural foliage things. Got it all working now!

I have tweaked the colors used and also the color grading in the post processing. The terrain has now be put in chunks, instead of every pilar being processed individually. This means that the render distance has been increased, very nice. After all of the design on the ground was done, the sky felt very empty. So, I have added a cloud plane in the sky. It is far from perfect, but I like it.

Again, enjoy some more screenshots! you can leave comments below or send me a message via Twitter.

Ah yes, the main menu! One of the things I tend to forget during game jams. I just want to keep the simple white style, as it suits the style of the game.

A Video

banner.png I still love to get into a new world and just walk around, finding different views and be amazed by the procedural generation. I hope you will like it too. The page can ba found Here

I made a video showcasing the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSDPISzoBGM

If you have a cool game and want me to play it, leave your page in the comments of this post!

New Update

banner.png

An Update

After releasing the game on Ludum Dare page and my itch.io page, I realized the rocks were not spawning. This was a mistake on my part, as 1 line of code prevented them from spawning. The new version fixed this problem. It is not a major update to the game, so in my opinion it still counts as the game I made for the jam. I just didn't have enough time to properly test the game.

Testing your games

Please put your game's link in the comments of this post, so I can test and give feedback. I love to test as many as I can! There are a lot of awesome games I have played already, Can't wait to play more!

Behind the scenes

Do you care for some behind the scenes footage of my game The Cube? Do you like to see in-engine video on how games are made? Than this is the right video for you!

The game can be found here, on the ludum dare page. Please leave a rating and a comment on what you think about the game.

Experimenting on my experiment

I have just been experimenting with some weird terrain generation. Sometimes, blocks stick out of the ground.

What is one them? How did they form? What is inside?

We will never know!

Play the game (without this terrain gen structures) Here

What do you think?

A Game Jam Template!

I have created a game jam template for Unity users! Instead of worrying about a main menu, simple settings like volume or a pause menu, you can just work on your game!

Focus on your game, not the menus! It is completely free and you can change whatever you want!

https://hunterson-studio.itch.io/game-jam-template

With the main menu you can go directly go to your game, settings or quit the game. You can even change the credits, name and the link to your gam's page! main menu.png

The settings menu has some simple options like changing the fullscreen mode, resolution and volume. Everything is super simple and you can change the look and code however you want! settings.png

And in your game's scene, you can simply drag the pause menu prefab and you have a pause menu. The game will freeze and you can go back to the menu or quit the game completely. pause menu.png

Game Jam Template

For some, making a game is hard enough. Making sure you have a main menu and some simple settings might be a hard task to add as well.

If you want, you can use my Game jam Template: https://hunterson-studio.itch.io/game-jam-template

It has a main menu with simple buttons to start and quit your game. A settings menu with options for fullscreen mode, resolution and volume. And it has a pause menu prefab which you can just add to your game scene to have a simple pause menu.

The unitypackage is free for everyone to use and modify! LD's rules state that you are allowed to 'use assets that you have the legal right to' and with the template, you have!

I would still recommend creating your own menus but the asset is there for you to use.

Working on an awesome rythm game!

Hello everyone! This is my third time joining LD and for my other 2 teammembers it is the first time! We have GamesBySaul for the art and TKIMUSE for the music and I am the programmer!

Very quickly we came up with about 6 main ideas of which a rythm game came out victorious! It would strike the right balance for our team! Art, Music and implementation. The theme would be very obvious with: "Mining deeper and deeper into the mine" but the rythm aspect would make it unique again.

I have streamed most of our development on my YouTube channel Hunterson Studio I will link the 'before lunch stream' at the bottom.

To keep it short, here is a short update video about our first day. It is 2 minutes long, I hope you enjoy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0RdeuZQ8dE

A fun tip for people who want to add levels to their games. Simply use a texture and paint where you want people to walk and where they can find/do things. In our case, where they can find ore and break walls. (The ore pixels have a blue value of 248 and the breakable walls 255) levels.png

Mine the Beat

The jam is over and the game is complete!

You can now play the game in all of it's glory! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/mine-the-beat

Can you beat my highscore? highscore_pieter.png ezgif.com-gif-maker (8).gif

The theme 'deeper and deeper' can be seen in the game, since you go deeper and deeper into the cave system. What we did not expect was also making system where you can go deeper and deeper into customizing your dwarf. customisation gif.gif

Nice Comments!

Thank you guys for the nice comments!

Nice entry! I really like the mood, the graphics and the music in this game.

This was a really awesome and so glad to see customisation as a feature!

Really cool Crypt-of-the-necrodancer-like (is that a real genre?)

This game oozes style. One of my favourites of the jam so far

And the feedback that we've been getting are really helpful. We might give the game a minor update to implement all of the suggested fixes and features.

Walk/Mine/Attack to the beat of the music! That's what Mine the Beat is all about!

You can play in your browser: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/mine-the-beat

Suggest some of your own entries for me to play and I might! I will always leave a vote and a comment!

Thanks again all!

GF's Dwarf's Looks

I got my girlfriend to play our submission.

In our game, Mine the Beat, you can customize your character to some degree, change the beard, hair or helmet and change the colour of everything!

This is what her dwarf looked like. Let me know what your dwarf looks like in the comments! I will play the games of everyone who has beat her score! (although I will likely play everyone's games) gf.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/mine-the-beat

Making a commercial game from our entry

After the jam we've decided to dedicate our time to making a full game. Our entry Mine the Beat was awesome, but we couldn't implement a bunch of features due to time.

After getting a ton of feedback already, we felt like a full commercial game would be awesome to make. We can just implement the features we wanted, apply the feedback we have gotten and have a cool game for people to buy.

Here is the first devlog on our journey. Instead of having man-made levels, levels will be procedural:

Ludum Dare 49

I joined anyway!

As the day started, I forgot Ludum Dare started. I wasn't going to participate if I couldn't think of something small, fun and interesting. Luckily, I found a concept that might work.

It started off as this idea:

"You have an unstable laser. You can shoot it to kill enemies, but with more use comes more unstable-ness."

I was planning on making a platformer with a character walking around with a laser rifle. But that idea passed, since it would require me to create a lot of animations ... something I simply cannot do. It would take the full 72 hours for me to just make a character animation.

Luckily spaceships can have laser guns and those need little animations, like rotating and stretching. As you can see below, I have already made the laser, since this is the most important part of a game about a laser. Just adding a line renderer, particle effects and bloom and the result looks nice. Of course I will tweak some values tomorrow, but the result is pretty cool already.

2021-10-3emlaser/emopt.gif

The unstable part can be found in the actual laser. See, a laser is made with multiple different parts. It starts with an energy source which starts a beam. Magnetic coils make sure the beam is as straight as it can be. The first lens makes sure most of the energy is passed through the entire crystal, which will give it it's red color. The second lens then focusses the energy to a narrower spot, making it sure it deals as much damage as possible.

2021-10-3_Showcase.png

Unfortunately, things can go wrong and any component can shift which messes with the alignment. Luckily you have control over the rotation of the components, so you might be able to fix it. Or you can use the mistakes to your advantage ;)
