Abstract game called Abstrakt

In two sentences: “I’ve made an abstract game called Abstrakt. It was pretty weird.”

I must admit that this game is more focused on the meaning than it is on the actual “game” part. The mechanics is pretty simple: You spawn white minions to protect the cactus in first round and in the second round, you spawn black minions to destroy the cactus. Easy as that.

Except for it’s not easy at all, it’s a bit more complicated.

Actually a lot more complicated. It’s so compilcated, that I was kind of forced to do a playthrough video.

This game is designed to be played once as it is focused on it’s meaning. You can get it here. I highly recommend you to read the instructions as the game might be a bit harder to understand.

Also, here are few screenshots just to draw your attention to this post:

My biggest fear is that people will think that the “game” part is the only part that should be rated/judged and that they won’t even reach the end, which is vital for the game.

Thanks for reading this post and don’t forget to have a good time playing all the LD games :)

Abstrakt – Post Mortem

To understand this post, you should play the game first.

Screenshots for some context

LSD/acid graphics seems to fit to this abstract game and seemed like a good idea to my melted brain (from tiredness, not acid).

Initial idea

The first idea was that there will be a fixed area and goblins would come in and want to destroy the object in the middle. The object in the middle at first was supposed to be a shoe. Just for fun, i’ve made a video after about 5 hours of work. The final game looks quite different, but the idea hasn’t changed. I wanted to make a bit of an emotional game. I also don’t know how to write stories or how to make graphics, so I’ve decided for the “abstract” look. Naming the game Abstrakt was just a matter of 5 minutes.

What went (surprisingly) well

After about 36 hours, all the main features were finished. I devoted my time from that point to polish stuff. I was also a bit afraid, that people will try to play the game without even reading the text and that they’ll see some meaningless stuff going on and that they’ll post hate comments. That’s one of my worst nightmare. When I’ve started receiving first comments, it turned out that people quite understand it and like it :) (hurray!).

What went wrong (as expected)

I knew that the graphics might hurt someone eyes, but while having only about 2 hours to deadline, redesigning about 100 sprites seemed to be a wrong idea. Besides, the graphics should correspond to the title, right?

There is a longer description on the game page, there are some instructions, story, etc..

Also I’ve made a full walkthrough video in case someone won’t understand the game, but still want to see the game in action.

I hope you are all satisfied with your entries :) Once again, you can play this game here.

LD31

I belong to a set of programmers participating in LD31 (I’m in)

Don’t worry, I don’t speak that way, I just wated something more creative than “I’m in”. Anyway, I am very excited about this LD (new web, hurray!).

My -things- I am going to make a game with

Code: VilTAGE (my own web ASCII game framework), Dart language

Graphics: have you read the line above? It’s ASCII graphics!

Sound: I don’t know. Probably BFXR and some online piano sound player.

So.. that’s it. See ya in the TOP 100! :)

LD32

I’m in, for the 4th time!

I’m very excited about Ludum Dare (my 4th time). Not sure If I like most of the themes, but it’s not about liking the theme, it’s about making a game!

My weapons of choice are Unity (not sure whenever 2D or 3D), Adobe PS and probably something like BFXR and Audacity for audio.

That’s it. See ya in the TOP 100 :)

Ageless Machine: Cup of Tea Post Mortem (& shameless self promotion)

I’ve rated lot’s of games this LD. Maybe too much, but I had so much fun playing all those unfinished titles :)

The game I’ve made (Ageless Machine: Cup of Tea) was mostly misunderstood, as I’ve made the gameplay too long (20-30 minutes). If you haven’t played that game, it’s some sort of a pessimistic puzzle adventure about determinism. Many people stopped playing after 3 minutes and then accused me of not following the theme.

I followed the theme. Just finish the game.

The confusion is probably the worst thing on this game. Since I’m not a graphic designer, I made very  primitive graphics, that made the game even more confusing.

People complained it’s hard to distinguish what’s on the screen, etc.. They may be right. I do shitty graphics.

Lot’s of people got stuck on some particular puzzle. That forced me to make this walkthrough, which solves all the ‘riddles’:

Eventually, I even wrote this article to explain thoroughly the story. I hope that if someone is interested in the game, I made sufficent materials to make him happy :)

The game overall became way too ambitious (I found that after about 20 hrs of working), but there was no going back. Feel free to make your own opinion on the game and let me know :)

LD33

In for the 5th time!

As always, I’m super excited about LD and I look forward to playing so many awesome games (in addition to trying my own luck)!

LD participation

I'm going to participate. That means I'm going to make a game. With tools, such as my keyboard, my screen, my desk. I'm planning to get refreshed by water and food.
