Wild Suese On The Loose!

Suese

Git out yer shotgun, ’cause there’s a Wild Suese On The Loose at Ludum Dare 22.

That’s right,  the one and only Suese is competing in Ludum Dare 22 and he’s hoping to make you all regret it!

Good luck everyone, and may the best competitor ROCK!

For competition formality here is a list of tools Suese will be using, including personal libraries.

Suese will be using FlashDevelop and ActionScript 3, and ScITE to develop the code.  He may be using one or all of a few personal libraries created previous to the competition: AS3 ANSI Music Player (plays classic ANSI music),  AS3 FANSI Buffer (for classic ANSI graphics in AS3),  and QuickLINK (a multi-language data serialization, storage, manipulation and reporting library for interfacing with PHP and MySQL servers).  See  http://danmckinnon.net/ludum_dare_tools/ for the source code to those personal libraries.

Suese usually either uses GIMP or MushII to develop graphics.  He prefers run-time generated sound effects and music but may sometimes use Ubuntu Studio (a large suite of tools), his electronic drum kit, keyboard, and a combination therein to accomplish these goals.   Suese runs Ubuntu 10 and Windows XP inside a VirtualBox.  He’ll be recording his progress with GTK CamStudio.

Unless you are entering the jam, you will need to make your personal libraries accessible to other entrants.

Gettin’ Loose Like A Goose

Suese

The stage is set with 5 hours left and this Suese is already gettin’ loose like a Canadian goose.

Competition area is cleaned, sterilized, and good to go. This Suese is ready to operate. Time to get this man a patient!

Good luck everyone!

There's a good reason I enjoy these competitions.

Ideas and realizations

Suese

well, 24 hours has past and I haven’t put down one single line of code. Just a stack of paper with ideas that sucked. I wanted to make something that really used the theme in the most unique way. I’ve come up with something nobody has ever seen before that I can complete in 24 hours but unfortunately I may have some stupid obligatory christmas social gathering. Grr…

Suese Concedes!

Suese

This Suese concedes. Too many things went wrong related and un-related to the competition.
Sad Face :(

Platformer Games

HOLY PLATFORMERS BATMAN.

The next Ludum Dare should have not only a random theme but a random genre too.

Who else likes this?

Obsession with details

Sometimes my obsession with details has no limit. The font I chose to be an integral part of my game’s design for some reason lacked a Zero and a One character, so I had to design my own that fit into the font. Is this over-zealous or do you think it’s important too?

The font I selected lacked a 1 or a 0, so I added them...

It isn’t over-zealous at all! After all, 1’s and 0’s are the life blood of all computers 😉

@Debarra Pure Action Script 3 with Flash Develop. Did you want to know something specific about it? I’ll be happy to help

I am -joining-

Hello,

I am joining Ludum Dare 23.

I will be using Flash Develop and Flym. If networking is involved I will also be using some base-code I have dubbed ‘quick-link’ available at http://danmckinnon.net/quicklink/

Cheers.

W00t,  Can’t believe I finished my entry.   It’s a lot more complicated than I originally intended or imagined.   If I had more time I would have added on-screen tutorial and a way of browsing family trees and the history log.

Little round worlds

HATE ON LITTLE ROUND WORLDS

Until today I didn’t even know such a genre of game existed, little round planet games. Today I learned and at first I thought it was innovative… then I played 3,000 games about little round worlds. I wish I was in-the-know about the culture behind these themes.

Last competition platformers bit the big one, this one it’s little ROUND shooters.

Best feeling ever.

Really appreciate all the comments good and bad. Thank you everyone.

Tiny Civilization – Enhanced.

For those of you that were really big fans of Tiny Civilization I have made some updates and added some polish.  Most notably some colour, a tutorial and some hot-keys for speeding up and slowing down the simulation.   Read the tutorial for the new hot keys.    Also more skills have been added and displayed to add more depth to game-play.  Some other minor tweaks to gameplay and bug-fixes too.

Bronze Coolness Achieved!

My hats really go off to the people who are able to play and test 100 games.

I’m sure there are lots of folks that are trying to rate quickly, but as for me, I put a lot of effort into my game and I want everyone to take a few minutes with my game, so I’m putting a lot of time into everyone else’s games. 10 – 20 minutes each.

Rating 50 games was more challenging than making a game in 48 hours. It takes a lot of mental stamina to break down a game and critique it 100 times over. The first 25 were pretty easy, but after that each game seems to be a slug-fest to my brain.

Hats off to Gold Coolness.

Yeah know what you mean… it does take a while. Usually for me I put in as much effort playing a game as is directly proportional to how much effort was put into making the game. Good quality games that are deep and rewarding I play for longer.

So true, I am literally wiped out from all of the entries I’ve played / rated! I definitely try and get to the end of all the games I rate. Granted, this is easier to do on the games that are done really well!

Totally true, I played every evening since the compo and have only finished to rate like 40 games, :)

I’ve been playing a few games every day – I’m up to 25 or so. I figure if I keep doing 3 or 4 a night, I’ll get to 100 (don’t check the math on that though. I don’t think it works).

OUYA kicks $8,596,475

A new indy-friendly game console has been fully funded by over 8 times the original goal setting the stage for a new major industry upset to enter the TV console gaming market. Get excited my friends because YOU could be developing games for the TV in as little as 8 months!

OUYA Video game console.

OUYA Video game console will be released in March 2013.

This Suese will be heading to L.A. for the Launch Party (in March tba?) as a game developer to promote my own games.

I am looking for some fellow game hackers who might want to join my team and make some smash retro-active titles to be marketed on the OUYA at launch.

Our games will have an honoured ‘Founder’ emblem in the market place, so this truly is an exciting opportunity to be a part of console gaming history.

I will never believe that “8 months” is realistic. Statistics even say, they higher funded a project is, the more it will overdraw its self-imposed deadline.

If you are searching for people to work with on any awesome pixel/retro games (my favourite), I would like to help! I have been trying to get more serious into game development, and Ludum Dare has helped me very much. Personally I don’t know many languages.

I call myself a pro with Lua (it’s very good for prototyping fast concepts with love2d) and have some experience in Python while I try to teach myself Java and make my first (hopefully) commercial game.

I create videos over at AtomicMonkeyPro (on YouTube) where you can find various 3d animations and live-action special effects I have done.

My skills are largely scripting in the mentioned languages above and Blender 3D, which I have been using for over 4 years, with some experience in creating pixel art (I’m trying to get my experience with this on my own project, especially animation of the pixels).

I think I have been writing this for too long so please contact me if you want to, and I would love to collaborate with you any time :)

If you’re going to be a “Founder” and make one of those first few games for the console, then it might be worth creating something that really stands out.

I agree with Sorceress’s advice. Make something amazing! From your past games, you seem to have a pretty good style going. Not too arcadish, more strategy, that’s pretty recognizable.

I’m an android dev capable of above average 3d/2d games who is considering joining a team of like-minded OUYA developers. I warmly encourage you to get in touch:

Retrocard is comming.

Remember the good ol’ days? When programming was so easy to get your hands onto that the average 5 year old could learn to program? What ever happened to that?
Now it seems every tool kit out there is designed to add more features and require over 100 lines of template or overhead code just to write a simple Hello World.
Well, I thought up a way to bring back the good ol’ days.

Introducing Retrocard.

Familiar toolboxes are designed to make Retrocard very approachable.

Retrocard is a computer constructor set for the web, designed to gently introduce newbies to programming in a creative and social environment.

Anyone with an internet connection and Adobe Flash can quickly create their own ‘cards’. Think of a card like a paint program with buttons and labels. With buttons you can make your card do a plethora of interesting different things from linking to a friends card to playing a musical tune you wrote. All of this with an approachable zero programming overhead. No templates. As for Hello world? Just double click on a button, click ‘edit script’, and write ‘ Say “Hello World” ‘

Making and sharing your own adventure game is quite a snap with Retrocard.

Will Retrocard be ready for Ludum Dare on Dec 14th? Well, I intend to have a beta release ready by Wedneday the 12th. Will that be good enough for Ludum Dare? Maybe. You will be welcome to try!

Look forward to an update on Wedneday the 12th

Thanks

I’m in

I should mention that I am in.    Tools:  As3, FlashDevelop, Gimp, and my Atari 2600 sound chip emulator located at:   http://danmckinnon.net/downloads/tia_sound.zip  If I do anything server-related it will be PHP w/ MySQL.  I almost forgot.   I may use Flod for music.  Cheers.

My computer crashed

Well..  this sucks.   My computer is crashing pretty hard-core.   I’ve isolated the problem to something fishy with my USB slots and now have everything plugged into the front of my computer.   I may have temporarily neutralized the problem,  but now I have a fresh desktop install with a new operating system and none of my dev tools installed.  Bah-hum-bug, this sucks.Crash

Without windows I cannot run the YM music tracker I was going to use called Arkos Tracker. I was using Flash Develop for pure AS3 programming. I am installing a virtual machine, but it is not capable of using the audio software I am used to in any acceptable manner.

Atari 2600 TIA Sound Chip for AS3 / Flash

I almost forgot to post this for people to use.

Want something different and more compact than SFXR for your AS3/Flash game?  Try my Atari 2600 TIA sound chip emulator.

This code was originally written by Ron Fries,  and ported from C to AS3 by me, The Suese.

It was very simple to port and I want everyone to be able to enjoy.

Oh yeah!  Don’t forget to let me know if you use the code in your game.

Enjoy!

Minimalistic and sentimental.

Despite some serious computer woes,  a sudden required OS change and a loss of my entire tool chain I’ve managed to get a few things back up and running before I head to bed.

No 10 monitor, 4-computer set-ups here.  Just an old junky computer made from various salvaged parts with broken USB; one very nice wide-screen hand-me-down monitor; an old PS-2 Keyboard I salvaged from a junk pile;  the cheapest mouse I could buy;  some hand-me-down speakers;  a pen and paper from the dollar store; some dice from the dollar store; some cards from the dollar store; some pizza money and a Ludum Dare T-Shirt with my name on it.   Even my desk and chair are hand-me-downs.

The Ludum Dare T-Shirt was the most expensive and highest quality thing here.

Yes that is a Ludum Dare T-Shirt with my name on the back.

Yes that is a Ludum Dare T-Shirt with my name on the back.

Last April, for Ludum Dare #23, I made Tiny Civilization with this very set-up.  I intend to make a great game that pushes my limits and places in the Top 10% again.

Good night and good luck.
